    Any bad criticism that The Grudge 2 had is due to the American executives' meddling. They wanted to explain Kayako, they wanted her to have a sister and I believe they also wanted to have a way to stop it, all things that Shimizu didn't want to have. And eventually, when Shimizu couldn't take their bullshit anymore and left, it's exactly what did for The Grudge 3.

    • @TheKeyser94
      @TheKeyser94 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      The executives where idiots? They not even known about the myth surrounding the Onryo? The whole point of the revengeful spirits is that there is nothing that can stop them, there is resolution, no happy ending, if you enter their territory or touch their belonging you belong to them forever, and if you try to destroy their place where they die, you only would make things worst, what those executives wanted is do another milk toast western horror movie.

      @@VideoGuy232 It not scary when you known that every curse have a solution or a resolution, like most typical western movies. Why you would feel fear and dread when the protagonist would search the ghost past and then find the cause of the cours? Onryos and Oni not work like that, they have different rules, Onryos you have no escape, ones you wrong them being guilty or innocent, you are dead, Oni can be tame, barely, but if you miss a monthly or yearly ritual you and your village are curse.

    • @VideoGuy232
      @VideoGuy232 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@TheKeyser94 The curse didn’t have a resolution in the first two western movies though. And anyway, adding a little bit of hope to the proceedings didn’t take away anything, especially when it was snuffed out in the end.
      Also, the remakes were made for American audiences who aren’t familiar with Japanese folklore, so it makes sense they would change the rules to be more palatable for that group. Thing is though, exorcisms and rituals are a part of Shinto as well, and some are even incorporated into later films in the series. So it seems strange to target the American films for the potential to defeat the curse, when that’s considered a possibility in the subsequent Japanese films.

    • @TheKeyser94
      @TheKeyser94 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@VideoGuy232 I hear of the Shinto ritual to get ride of the an Onryo but it say that is so long, that is possible that the Onryo kill you first before the monk end the ritual, and in case of the Oni if you keep the rituals and offerings that keep him jailed, but if you fail ones or something beyond your control happen that you miss a ritual, you are screw, and of course typical solutions doesn't work, destroying the resting place of an Onryo only would spread the curse, all the Onryo stories in Japanese folklore and movies dating more and less fifty years ago, basically end with the perpetrator killed or the Onryo killing indiscriminately everything that get in her way.

    weirdly enough I think Takashi Shimizu deserves a video of his own. The man is an inspiration to me and many others. He’s created some of the most recognizable characters in the entire horror genre, I mean that with these characters are likely even more popular than Freddy or Jason

    I just saw the OG Grudge and the American remake last night back to back and they both felt like the same movie to me. I can't understand how anyone would say one is worse than the other. I can't understand how someone would hype one over the other either. They're basically the same movies apart from the effects and how the story is unfolded. The American version had better effects since it had a bigger budget and it had a more linear cohesive story too. But that's not to say Juon is worse because it's still the same movie. If that's a contradiction then oops.

    Ju-On series is my favorite horror franchise of all time. I came upon Asian horror late but in my opinion it is the best. Some entries do fall short, most specifically the American versions, but overall I still very much love this franchise. My favorite is the 2002 Ju-On: The Grudge. It was so creepy with a lot of now iconic scenes. I also like White Ghost better than Black Ghost, but I still thought they were both entertaining. I do hope there will be a 2nd series of Ju-On Origins, but I wonder if they have squeezed out every story line they can with this franchise to the point where they are just creating subpar content to keep the franchise profitable. In that case, they should probably let it be done. Thank you for your analysis and comprehensive deconstruction of the entire series. I really enjoyed it very much.

    The Grudge 2 was somewaht bland, I agree. But it has two very well mde scare scenes that I will never forget. First, when Allison is locked in the attic entrance, and when reporter is watching the tape with ghost appearing behind him. Masterful.

    I really wanted The Grudge 2020 to be good. The trailer looked promising and it had some real talent behind it, but it was so god damn boring it took my wife and I 3 days to finish it. We kept falling asleep. It could have been better if it actually developed some sort of atmosphere and had actual character development.

    Love Juon The Curse, The Curse 2, JuOn The Grudge, JuOn The Grudge 2, and The Grudge (2004). The Grudge 2 (2006) is good for me. The Grudge 3 was okay but still like. The reboot like the 1st reboot was good but not perfect but the final curse like I wish they should've done better with the tittle. Sadako vs Kayako was okay and disappointed since Kayako wasn't shown that much and they made her weak like she should've equal like Sadako. Not a fan of the tv series of JuOn Origin since it's not base on Kayako but base on the same curse and I hated. Also there are rumors I read in Wiki that there might be a reboot of Sadako vs Kayako but in a american version.

    I actually had no idea there were more Japanese movie beyond Ju-On 2 until the Arrow Video announcement with Black Ghost and White Ghost, with the exception of the Ring vs Ju-On movie. I actually found that film to be complete crap that completely disregarded the rules of the Ju-On house. But then again, Origins made a complete retcon by having the house be cursed BEFORE the Saeki family, which was kind of lame. Beyond that, I did enjoy a lot of the series, especially in teams of atmosphere and suspense. Most of the characters were awful people though, and got what they deserved.
    Anyway, I love the first theatrical film immensely and it is the whole reason I am importing that Arrow Video set from the UK. I wasn't big on the second film, but it had its moments. Never seen the tv movies that led to the theatrical film, so I am looking forward to seeing those.
    As for the American movies, they got progressively worse. The first one was a damn good movie and easily fit in with the Japanese films very well. I do wish it had the time loopy plotline from the Japanese one, but it's okay. The second one was almost as bad as Kayako vs Sadako while the third one was just dreadful. I didn't think it could get any worse than that until the 2020 movie happened. That was hands down the worst movie of 2020 as it was so lifeless. It was like someone wanted to show that you how to completely botch a J-Horror film in American hands even though it had already been done years prior with the likes of Rings and The Grudge 3.
    I am shocked to see that there were more movies after the two ghost films given they were not included in the Arrow Video set, but the same thing happend with Ring, so I guess I shouldn't be?

    I think a new good horror game based on grudge would be cool. I remember playing the old grudge game on Nintendo wii and it was good. They could do kind of an open world story based game, where you have different locations of where the curse has spread too (so you can explore side characters more) and it also goes into the origins of kayako and other spirits made from the curse.
    This would probably take time to make, but it would be a good way to bring the franchise some attention rather than throwing out yet another ju on movie.
