I think the point of episode 3 (Bill & Frank) is to prove Joel's statement at the beginning of episode 2 wrong. He says to Tess about Ellie: Stop talking about her as if she has some kind of life in front of her. Joel believes that all thats left in the world is suffering, and no one can have any kind of happy ending. Episode 3 proved this wrong, you can grow old with someone and have as close to a happy ending as possible. Ellie and Joel can have a future, a life, a friendship if thats what they choose for themselves.

Which, in the game, essentially shows Joel what he could be if he continues down this path and pushes him to be just the opposite. The show gives Joel a similar push, just in the positive. Others already commented about the meaning behind episode 3. With regards to the differences between the game though: the game uses Bill & Frank (who were in a relationship in both contexts) as a negative portrayal of love and human connection. Bill & Frank become estranged and bitter, Frank hangs himself, and Bill becomes deplorable to the point of earning the audience's pity and revulsion. In the game, Bill serves as a negative motivator, showcasing to Joel what he could DEVOLVE into if he continues on his current path of pushing people away from him. In the show, they decided to change things into a positive motivator via a positive portrayal of love and human connection. Bill & Frank have a long and happy life together, but tragically (or merrily?) die together, showcasing to Joel what he could EVOLVE into if he shifts away from his current path and begins to open up to other people. They discuss this in the HBO behind-the-scenes special for episode 3 where Neil Druckman (the director for the game) goes into these details and how he believes the show should only deviate from the game in scenarios where the resulting story comes out better than the story the game could tell (which is why he supported the changes).

@@nandoman4769 as I said, only see the surface...there are subtle moments when you can see that he didn't have to take Ellie with him.
Ep 3: Joel walked out with the letter and took a moment with it... (If he only needs the truck, he wouldn't even care about the content).
Ep 3: he established with Ellie the rules for sticking with him after the letter scene...when he could've done that much earlier...this shows he made up his mind after the letter.
      Ep 4:
Ellie: where would you be without me
Joel: right now, in Wyoming (he's aware that Ellie is a weight he must carry and made him at a disadvantage, yet he chose to carry her anyway).
Joel also started to warm up after the letter, you can see his interaction with her in the car about the song by Linda Ronstadt.
This all happened after the letter.
Yes, his mission is to find his brother, but he didn't have to take Ellie, because that means extra effort to protect...he could've just returned her to Boston after getting the truck then go to find Tommy.
You can argue that "well, they don't need to make the story that long and just showed the letter in the end" the story is to add the gravity of the letter. It enriches the content of the letter rather than just a note passed from one to another, it shows what happened behind it.

In the game, it was hinted that Bill and Frank were romantic partners, but they were too different for each other and they had a sad ending. I think the point of Bill, in the game, was to show Joel how he would end up if he kept pushing people away.
In the show they stay true to the differences between the two characters, but they gave them a happy ending instead of a sad one. Frank chose to stay with Bill in his hermit town and Bill allowed Frank to make some friends. In the end they made their own sacrifices and were happy with the life they lived. In the show, Bill teaches Joel that he has a purpose to keep going and to protect Ellie.
My guess, is they really wanted to keep Bill and Frank in the story because people really enjoyed Bills character (Frank was never in the game), but there wasn't enough substance or maybe they would've needed multiple episodes? I don't know. May be they wanted a happy story somewhere in the show and they were the perfect characters to do that with.

  • @TukaihaHithlec

Something about the game version that goes misunderstood is how Bill and Frank didn’t hate each other, they were just too different. Frank’s suicide note is worded harshly, but that’s because he cared about Bill. When you meet Bill he tells you that he had a partner but they weighed him down and were too much risk, so he kicked them out. When you find Frank’s body is becomes clear that Frank chose to leave and Bill just isn’t taking that well - he’s in denial, similar to how Joel handled Tess’ death. In this franchise, more characters die than survive, and Bill was a rare example specifically because he was paranoid and alone. Love and attachment get people killed, but it’s worth it.

*The significance of Bill's story in Ep3:* In the game, it's confirmed that Bill is gay (that same gay porn magazine scene is in the game) and that he and Frank were in a romantic relationship. But due to their different outlooks on life, Frank grew to resent Bill and tried to leave Bill's town before he got bit. Joel and Ellie essentially run around town looking for a car battery, but running around for supplies doesn't exactly contribute to the overall plot of the show in a meaningful way. Bill was essentially a bitter, lonely man, and he doesn't go through any sort of character arc.
Instead, the show expanded on Bill and Frank's relationship to show how Bill and Frank are parallels to Joel and Tess; Bill and Joel are the more stoic, pessimistic 'protectors' who see Frank/Tess as their 'protectees' who are more optimistic and friendly. This episode is a microcosm of the whole story- how a lone survivor had no other purpose to live until he connected to another human being and found a new purpose in protecting and loving them. Joel and Tess are alluded to being basically family, tho Tess likely wanted something more but respected that Joel didn't want to be too close to her bc of his trauma of losing Sarah. But Tess' death is a reminder to Joel that he's failed his purpose of being a protector for his family twice now, and by respecting Tess' last wish to protect Ellie until they reach the Fireflies, Joel is finding a new purpose in protecting someone again.
*Overall* : Bill in the game was a warning to Joel of how sad life would be without ppl to care for. But Bill in the show is the opposite and inspires Joel to not be like that, shifting Joel's perspective of Ellie in a way the show's audience can better understand through Bill's own character arc. Bill's letter impacts Joel, bc Joel knew that they were similar types of cynical survivors and that if Bill can change, he might too. Being a 'protector' of your family is a theme that's being emphasized 100x more in the show than in the game with every single side-character plotline. So the reason for Bill's flashback and letter is to culminate into the line "That's why men like you and me are here"- bc Bill's story speaks to Joel specifically bc he believes wholeheartedly. And now Joel feels responsible for protecting Ellie like family, not just cargo (tho he still lies to himself and Ellie that she's only 'cargo' bc he's still scared of getting too attached).

In defence of the last episode "not advancing the plot" Bill and Frank are characters in game and there's things you have to do in the game with Bill so I think this was a good way to implement the two characters and give their backstories and it's certainly more cinematic than seeing Bill and Joel doing side quests like in the game.

The point of episode 3 is to show that no one can make it in this world alone. Joel and Bill both try to a valid attachment and survive, but it’s just surviving not living. Bill learns to live because of Frank and his value of enjoying life while we’re here. Joel is scared to open up after Sarah and that’s why his relationship with Tess was never official. Bill & Frank were also lovers in the game, we just don't see it explored like it is in the show. The way I view Episode 3, is that it shows us an alternative timeline to what Bill could've had with Frank if he wasn't stubborn and was willing to open up to try and have a life that didn't have to only apply on Bill's terms. In the game, Bill and Frank never worked things out like they did in the show and it is the more dark and tragic scenario in their relationship (Bill still lives, but now has no companionship and lives with the torment that Frank hated him) versus the show where they have their long and happy life and die together

It's implied they were in a relationship for a while but the deviation is that Frank got Bill to open his heart to actually living instead of just surviving in the show (as seen in the scene where they were arguing about fixing up the shops in the town with paint and stuff) but in the game Frank never got Bill to open his heart so they ended up clashing and Frank hated that Bill never got that in their situation it was ok to open up and live... So basically two different story lines, one where Bill is too stubborn and never actually lives (and all the negative outcomes that brings) and one where Frank did manage to get through to Bill and they live happily ever after lol

  • @BrianHeise1983

Bill and Frank were in a relationship in the game. There was some sort of falling out before Joel and Ellie show up. They eventually find the letter and then Frank's hanging body. Bill is visibly shaken, voice wavering and refers to Frank as his partner. It's pretty clear based on everything that happens and is discussed up to that point who they are in relation to one another. For the show, it also makes Frank storming out of the house during that argument before they reveal the year a bit of a fake out, at least for me, because it made as if we were going to see the argument that leads to the following events in the game, but then does a whole 180.

While it is similar to the main menu of the game its not the exact main menu. Also in the game Frank does leave a hateful letter to Bill. I think it was done intentionally by Frank because he knew it would get under Bill's skin and he didn't want to give Bill the satisfaction of him being right, but you can tell in the game Bill still loved him and I believed Frank did too.

I know this has already been commented on but I feel like the more it’s said the better the chance that you guys will see it, bill and Frank and 100% in a relationship in the game. This has been confirmed by the game’s creator.
Bill refers to frank as his partner multiple times in the game and in case that wasn’t enough because people will say partner can mean anything, Ellie finds the gay porn in Bills car in the game; that scene is almost word for word in the show and the game, which confirms that Bill is canonically gay in the games, with his partner Frank.
The game is essentially what would’ve happened had Bill not given Frank paint and gas for the lawn mowers so he could fix up the place and allowed him to invite Joel and Tess over.

+Studio Gek Bill and Frank were a gay couple in the game but you wouldn’t know that if you didn’t read all of the notes and pay attention to all of the details. They were having issues and got into a fight and Frank hung himself but you don’t know why or why they were fighting.
The scene at the beginning of this episode where Ellie find the gay porno magazine in the truck is a shot for shot word for word recreation of the game.
Also I recommend watching the directors and writers commentary on the behind the scenes footage from Episode 3 (the bill and Frank episode). You’d hear why the episode had an actual purpose in the story. Apparently and im just summing up what they said…the point of the last episode was basically a parallel of Frank and Bill with Joel and Tess as well as Joel and Ellie. Also it was pushing Joel to protect Ellie and see protecting her as his purpose now.

Here's how Kathleen came to lead them (you'll get a bit of this in the next episode): Their original leader, her brother, was killed. But her brother was a moral man, who fought with some chivalry. They all knew the only way to beat FEDRA was to become terrorists. But her brother AND they didn't want to do that. After he died, Kathleen's grief allowed her to gain their sympathy and step into a leadership role as they were freed to commit atrocities on _her behalf,_ because they loved her brother, which made her like a sister to them. And then it grew from there. Her rise to power came about because she was willing to take on the guilt and responsibility for the murder of women and children they took part in in order to overthrow FEDRA. She was the moral scapegoat. And the results of her merciless methods won their loyalty.

Hey guys! I'm loving your reactions!! I'll add my two cents re:ep 3. I ADORE the game but was totally cool with the Ep3 change. First, whoever told you Bill and Frank aren't together in the game was very obtuse -- Frank and Bill were DEFINITELY a romantic couple in the game... Frank left Bill because Bill was uncompromising and selfish. After he leaves, Frank ends up getting bit and hangs himself, leaving Bill a bitter, cruel suicide note to punish him. The change to the TV episode was much better than watching that tragedy play out, it would have been way too depressing and unrewarding. Just another sad episode among two previous sad episodes. AND the change benefits the overall story arc of Joel and Ellie imo. The Bill/Frank arc very closely resemble Joel/Ellie: the role of protector and how far you'll go for someone you love (a VERY important thread that runs through every episode of the game/show)
Also, Ellie's impact on Joel closely mirrors Frank's on Bill: surviving isn't actually living, etc.
Cheers! Can't wait for your reaction to the next episode!!! ❤
