I think the barrels thing may have been a reference to pewdiepie because his old amnesia the dark descent had him antagonizing barrels ... something of the sort.
Personally I really enjoyed having to basically play little bits of Super Mario Bros 3 to unlock each skill, but I can definitely see how they could very easily wear thin for many.
I got it in early access, largely thanks to Civvie and it's a gem. I restarted since it's fully released and even with over 80 hours before hand, I'm still finding new stuff! It's great fun and finding crazy stuff like burst fire bazookas or automatic swords, just makes the chaotic fun even better!
I've been meaning to go back to this game, I stopped playing on a boss level and its a bit of a pain to come back to a boss without the momentum after not playing for months... official release looks like a good excuse to restart from the beginning and getting all the new weapons :D
There are also random events. Gravity turns off and you travel with the help of recoil and kicks, or you are attacked by your own flying, disembodied head. (Yeah I stole examples from Civvie because I haven't played for a while)
And the worst thing is when one of those random events happens in my case it was the infinitely spawn exploding orbs event but the orb you have to destroy to stop it was at the top of an elevator so i died having to sit srill in an elevator while tons of explosives went off
The reason the lighting is so striking is because they made normal maps for the pixel art. Normal map comes from the term surface normals, which is essentially the angle light hits the surface at. Normal maps allow the surfaces to have extra detail, it's commonly used for everything from the indentations in brick walls to the small details on 3d characters skin like veins and knuckle folds In skin.
I love the easter eggs and references. I think the "pokemon" in the jade tree called FISHID is a reference to MISSINGNO in Pokemon Red for Gameboy Color. Remember the rare candy cheat?
Always have a Soft spot for Indie games that has a plectra of Easter Eggs and Secrets. and If i am right...That Barrel "Easter egg" you come across is probably an homage to Pewdiepie cus of how he once made a big old classic meme out of it during his Amnesia playthrough days.. P.S Would love to hear your thoughts about the Pokémon games,Perhaps a Retrospective of the franchise though it's gonna cost you a lot of work and pressure.

I'll admit the art style gives me some cause for concern, not because of the retro pixel-art exactly, but because it looks a lot like Project Warlock, a game which I couldn't finish because the lack of contrast between enemy sprites and the environment made it physically painful for me to look at. This doesn't look quite that bad, probably down to those lighting effects, but the experience still made me leery. I like the idea of having to pick a weapon to keep between sections, that seems like it would encourage the sort of cunning strategy and forethought which always makes these sorts of games more fun. And I like the idea of a dreamscape where weapon and enemy designs can just be fun without needing to follow any logical sense. I think I'll buy it when I've got some serious time to sink in to it right away, so I can refund it if it starts giving me migraines.

I really dig the weird visuals. While most retro shooter these days are either polished to a shine, or made intentionally ugly in a very calculated fashion, this one just feels like someone found assets from an unfinished Wolfenstein engine game and made a crazy-ass mod with them.
i think everyone that found that skull on the trumpet has spammed that thing at least 50 times when they encounter it. idk what it is, something about out-of-key trumpet playing in this game is too satisfying.
It's nice to see more rouge likes... Lites... Whatever. Are getting more diverse in their formula since they were so focused on replayability. This one does it in a way that the set back is so minor that some people wouldn't even say its a rouge like cause "I should be starting over with no items and skills that I have to luck myself way back to the top." So happy to see devs willing to try new things despite risks and all that.

What funny is a lot of the graphic snobs dont even have strong enough system to run whatever they think is great. That's why they shit on indie game like this, they cant spend time with their boring AAA eye candy. Or even worse, they play on console.
you should check out cruelty squad. it came out last year and id say it fits in the boomer shooter revival but it takes more inspiration from immersive sims and games like Hitman
Hey if you like pokemon games, try Monster Sanctuary. It's like pokemon team battles, platforming world, but gets REALLY strategically deep and very difficult.
Having melee weapons doesn't make something not a shooter and it definitely doesn't make it an rpg. This absolutely is a shooter. Most of the weapons are guns.
I'm easily entertained so....I kinda like the mini games x_x But yeah I can see how people wouldn't because it feels like it's interrupting the game flow

My average when I stream is roughly 70 viewers. When I streamed pokemon it was less than 20. So yea my viewers just don't care about pokemon. They subscribe for fps.

i think later is an upgrade in the skill tree where you can keep more than one weapon or lvl 2 weapons.

You can still unlock skills, upgrades, etc through the usual menus, you just don't have to play the mini-games any more.
