    Dev Here.
    Wow! When I clicked on this video I was like "ready for the hurt" but really enjoyed the honest pro and con feedback!
    Fossilfuel was a passion project of mine and honestly, I probably should have waited until I had more developer experience under my belt before attempting to put together a game this size. At the time I hardly even knew how to use Animation Blueprints (The animations don't even blend).
    Fossilfuel was a game I've wanted to make ever since playing Turok, Resident Evil, and Half Life as a kid in the 90s. The inspirations in the game are fairly obvious.
    Reading the comments here and having made something that people have spent this much time playing and analysing really makes it all worth it! You all are awesome.
    Ps - I'll be sure to put motion blur options going forward ;-)

      I hope it can eventually become a successor to Dino Crisis (since Capcom clearly doesn't care about the series anymore) lol.

      Tryinna-be dev here.
      Im the flipside of the coin: i've been doing on and off projects without ever pubblishing a game at all because i can't find the "the perfect balance" for them or i feel i could be doing better.
      Maybe your game is not the best, but it's still something you've published and that's already a great accomplishment! Keep up the good work!

      @LOAN NGUYEN Dev here. Spot on. I simply don't have the time to model and animate every object myself. Buying assets is the only way to get a game done in a timely manner for me (it can take YEARS to make a game). I try to look at it like tools in a tool belt. The bought asset is the paint that I am using, but the actual painting is mine. My job is to make the best painting I can.
      I find that if the story and gameplay are fun enough, that is what matters.

    As someone who's used Unreal there is a way to disable motion blur in the project settings without it affecting other post-processing settings, its just something that not many developers know of or think about.
    Also there is a way to disable it from the config files but its a bit of a hassle.

  • @GODSPEEDseven
    @GODSPEEDseven 2 ปีที่แล้ว +99

    About Motion Blur;
    I've had the same issue with many games using Unreal Engine 4. It's usually coded into the engine and tied-in with the post-processing setting (from what I've gathered).
    I play many simulator-type games, and ALL the ones using UE4 have this EXTREMELY annoying motion blur crap cranked to 11.

      yeah, an asset flip is when someone just buys of bunch of assets, shoves them all in one game without optimizing and shoves it out the door. This dev clearly took the time to make the assets work together and give feel of having effort put behind it.

      If you did a dinosaur in a xenomorph like way, I could see it working, sort of. Tho xenomorphs have to specifically kill humans in order to survive. It's the only way they can breed. And dinosaurs are like birds. Unpredictable and threatening, but a little dumb. They are like any other wild animal. Humans would be hunting them, not dinosaurs hunting humans. They would need a reason to specifically hunt humans. Maybe if they were mutated or something then maybe.
      It would be cool to see a dinosaur game that has accurate appearance and sound. Imagine feathers on velocirapors. And the low pulsing bass of a T rex

    • @faceless2302
      @faceless2302 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ego6342 Animals hunt or otherwise attack humans all the time, they don't really need any deeper reason to do so. Tons of instances of lion and leopard attacks in video or history for example. Humans are usually on top of the whole avoiding predation thing because we're smart, but one little slip up and you're bleeding to death in something's jaws or having part of your body severed by a claw. This sort of dynamic is why Jurassic Park is such a good story, it feels real (minus the novel raptors that can chew through steel bars), and real life is scary. Dragons are purely fantastical in nature, but dinosaurs were the real apex creatures of their era for an unbelievably long time and must've been exceptionally capable animals.

    I've covered countless Unreal Engine games myself, and had the chance to speak to some of their devs. Unreal aggressively pre-packages a ton of unnecessary and frankly nauseating features that a developer must spend extra time disabling or giving a toggle to. And yet, I believe not even a basic options menu is a default feature. This must be enabled by the dev.

You buy and try out a huge selection of guns (no belt feds😞), customize them in almost anyway you want, and try your hand at a lot of different ranges. Your enemies include cardboard cutouts of different types: thugs, nazis, zombies, Nazi zombies. You even have access to a sandbox level where you try out just about all the guns (and a few other weapons), as well as shoot at props of different types. Later.

    The Call of Cthulhu game that works on the Unreal engine is also like that. Everything is tied to post-processing. Fuck Unreal honestly.

    Me too, i never understood motion blur. Another thing i never liked (it really kills immersion) is when they use lens flare in games - i mean, my "in game eyes" aren't camera lenses! Heh.
    P.S. - has anyone played "Kane and Lynch: Dog Days"? ... Mannnn, the "eye candy" effects in that game are like no other, yeehaw... You've got:
    Lens flare, MASSIVE motion blur, static noise, chromatic aberration, camera shakes when you move as if literally a cameraman is recording your movements, etc...

    • @wadelockard5592
      @wadelockard5592 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      you can at least turn off the camera shake. makes it a little bit better

    Using dinosaurs as a horror threat to him is just absurbed or weird, though I have yet to see someone use bears or wolves as horror monsters.
    Though when it comes to Turok, I hope Turok evolution comes to PC as that was my first exposure to turok, sure it wasn't perfect but I still had fun.

      @@Jarekthegamingdragon I’d love to see all the hate comments though directed towards this game. I mean imo the only thing bad about the multiplayer is that the gunsmith essentially makes every gun behave exactly like each other, which is something that I don’t think should happen.

    Not being able to turn off motion blur is actually *exactly* the way unreal is, which is one of the reasons i'm no longer using it. At least in ue4, there's a shitton of postprocessing effects, including very bad antialiasing and motion blur, which are all under a single option, no way to turn them off except for modifying the engine in visual c++. Yuck.

    • @eyedine
      @eyedine 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      ...you can change effects with console commands. Which I'm pretty sure you can call with basic blueprints.
      The default effect settings are just that, default settings.
      It's at the discretion of a developer to add those more in depth settings.

    • @anonymouseovermouse1960
      @anonymouseovermouse1960 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@eyedine Then it's really funny that despite browsing documentation relating to the postprocessing of UE4, despite googling for hours, despite going through official support channels, i have never come across the retarded idea that you have to play with console commands at runtime to affect postprocessing effects, despite there already being settings in UE4 related to the postprocessing effects - these settings themselves not having any of the functionality you purpoted console commands to have. Then again, the last time i used UE4 was 2 years ago, maybe the dumb fucks changed something since.

    Fossil fuel is a really good name for a dinosaur shooter honestly, and a T-rex would be really hard to get away from, even if you can move your legs faster its strides should out pace a person easily, very lame fight.
