Great overview. I have both, and find Procreate Dreams’ design philosophy of hiding features makes it so much more frustrating to use. Toonsquid is full-featured and powerful. I will keep checking in with Procreate Dreams, but at least for now still find Toonsquid to be the superior app.

If Toon Squid is such a superior app, why can’t it play my 3 minute animated video without lagging and stopping? 🤷🏽‍♂️

    • @sfdex
      @sfdex 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@Tonabillity I haven’t had that issue, but I’m running it on a 6th gen iPad Pro 12.9” with a ton of ram. And maybe I haven’t taxed it as far as you have. That said, my opinion stands, for me, ToonSquid is a better app than Procreate Dreams. I expect that Dreams will improve over time, and who knows? Maybe it will get better, but I doubt they’ll change their design philosophy of hiding functionality.

@@sfdex I absolutely agree that if you haven’t had any issues with ToonSquid, then of course it’s the program for “you”. That’s only logical.
If ToonSquid worked for ME, I’d be using it as well.
No doubt Procreate Dreams will improve over time. I just hope that ToonSquid also improves over time for those with 5th gen iPads who find it unusable.
In the interim, I’ve seen a plethora of phenomenal PD animations crafted by amazing innovators, who have discovered brilliant workarounds!❤️‍🔥
In fact I’m currently experiencing breakthroughs in animation as well from an app that’s supposed to be “worse” than ToonSquid 🤷🏾
I have BOTH programs, and find that NOTHING beats PD’s UNPRECEDENTED Performance Mode!
However, I heartily agree that those who lack the capacity to comprehend hidden features should avoid Procreate Dreams at all cost!
But I feel like Tony Stark, zooming in and out of Procreate Dream’s hyper-fluid, next-level, nonlinear timeline!
If I’m not able to discover all of the hidden features of PD’s elegant design in this Information Age (of zillions of TH-cam videos), then I may as well crawl back to the 1980’s 😝😩
Enjoy ToonSquid’s antiquated interface. I’ve moved on to the Future 💫

the issue with procreate dreams is the missing tools needed for transforming and selecting objects in your animation. The lasso tool is the most important tool needed to fix your animation however it isnt available in dreams

      @@Op09687 I agree with you.
For anyone who needs vectors or rigging, no doubt TS is the appropriate platform at the moment.
It was sufficient for me while it lasted.
But for decades my industry pals and I, have been dreaming of a mobile app that focuses on traditional frame by frame animation and the craft of actually “drawing”.
I’m sure that eventually PD will adopt all of the expected tools used to enhance contemporary production pipelines - AND MORE.
In fact, I heard that procreate is already eagerly developing an Apple Vision Pro version of their platform!
In the interim, PD’s missing Lasso tool has been a bit of a blessing in disguise for me personally. It FORCES me to return to those basic, essential DRAWING skills that were diligently practiced before the Digital age emerged.
By the time they hammer out their upgrades, my drafting skills will be much stronger💪🏾
I sincerely hope that ToonSquid is working to improve their performance issues as well.

I own ToonSquid as well, but I’m currently hooked on Dreams!
I’m just now realizing that when most people speak of Animation, they are probably thinking of the “modern day” definition, i.e. motion graphics, rigging, etc.
So within that context, they no doubt have a legit point in finding Procreate Dreams useless.
And there are indeed a plethora of apps that out-perform PD in that regard.
However, I am only interested in ONE particular thing. Traditional (old-school) frame by frame Character Animation.
But that technique is so old-fashioned that one must have the capacity to draw EXTREMELY well, with or without contemporary lasso tools. So most users go into a rage whenever I acknowledge that PD forces me to practice drawing better, without the aid of Cut & Past tools that I usually rely on.
On the other hand, I find that PD’s navigation interface, so DYNAMIC and futuristic, that it simply cannot be beat, flaws and all!
I’m constantly amazed by how fluidly I can move frames around non-linearly, and on the fly.
I’m currently working on a dialogue scene, and my capacity to adjust frame lengths to work out timing (and acting) has been tremendously upgraded.
I can only equate it with freestyle rapping!
However, I’m highly aware that I’m in the minority of those who are hyper-focused on such ancient techniques.
ToonSquid fans usually fly into a rage whenever I praise the benefits of Procreate Dreams so enthusiastically. I’ve been accused of spamming, trolling, and everything else!
It’s very rare to see someone who appreciates the benefits of such a flawed program as much as I do, so thanks again for your unbiased input 👍🏽

I feel like trying to emphasize an intuitive and less-technically minded workflow works better in Procreate since it's okay for single illustrastions, but once you are working with frames and video encoding pipelines, the procreate approach is too fuddy duddy and it feels like Procreate Dreams doesn't really want to support granular and fine tuning with its lack of tools and precision.

Procreate Dreams is an animator and compositor that isn’t limited by linear processing like ToonSquid that’s a more traditional animator. Procreate and Procreate Dreams have the ability to paint and light 3D models and likely animate them in the near future. ToonSquid can’t just add these features with a “update”.
ToonSquid might not have the financial support to afford starting from scratch and programming/developing an application with the ability to do complex layering which requires a low-level API (Metal 3) for advanced real-time/parallel processing.
Yes, you can do what Procreate Dreams does on a compositing level but it requires third-party apps and clever work arounds on a more manual approach. But, that’s what’s great about ToonSquid :)

So get off your high horse and accept that unless its been actually presented with bones for rigging, always expect it wont have it. And that at the moment, the devs are either unable to make it or are still working on creating a fully rigging software for ipad and tablets out there. cuz the tech for tablets in general is kinda iffy. its getting better each year but some still are not powerful enough to handle such processing. If I recall, apple literally holds back their M1 and even M2 chips on purpose. idk why, but they are. So, stop being a baby and use what we have now or use your PC instead.
