I remember feeling disappointed after trying to mess with Dreams for a month. I really just wanted an animation app to practice animation on, but I spent more time fighting with the app itself to make things work. The missing select tool, no intuitive way to move multiple frames around, and the inconsistent undos really made it hard to enjoy this app.
I really did like the brushes and canvas though. I liked how detailed I could get with shots if I wanted to.
I ended up discovering Toon Squid about several months ago, and it's everything I wanted out of Dreams. A select tool, moving multiple frames around, an asset library to store frames/images if you want to repeat stuff, great feeling brushes, I was so happy to finally find a 2d animation app I liked. The only thing Dreams has over ToonSquid is its ability to have multiple apps open for references. The workaround in Toonsquid is just importing those images onto the canvas.
Anyways thanks for the great video, it's nice knowing I'm the only one that thinks Dreams HAS potential, but is lacking.

I would've like this too, but Procreate as a program cannot handle a timeline! There's a reason it has a layer limit. I understand why Savage did what they did, Dreams was built from the ground up which is why it's so buggy.

My main issue with Dreams is that, it felt like the Procreate team wanted to make a video editing app with the ability to animate tacked on to it. They didn't focus on making Dreams an intuitive and comprehensive animation app first. It's a similar problem with the animation feature in the original procreate: the animation functions feel like an after thought which makes the process of animation slower and even more tedious. I really feel like they missed the mark and really should have just focused on making an animation app for the ipad. They should've used programs like TVPaint and Toonboom as reference but simplified for the ipad hardware. The editing features and extra could've come later on, once people got a good impression of the program. Now, I think they have to do more work to make people actually like the app.

I agree so much procreate dreams slows me down so much. I just made my first short film and it was with procreate dreams, it took me a whole year and it coming out De 31. A huge problem I had with it is that once your file gets too big it starts rendering your drawings really blurry unless you zoom in really close.

PD is a beefy hunk of software and has SO much potential to change the animation game if it keeps getting updated, which I believe it will. However in its current state, I find myself fighting with the gesture controls so often it interrupts my workflow, and there are some things that are ESSENTIAL to the 2D animation process that the app straight up doesn’t tell you about. Maybe one day PD will be the anim app we all dreamed it would be, but for now, I think it’s a great app to play around with to get the feel of 2D anim for beginners, but pros will be looking elsewhere to make real production work. I hope one day that changes.

Hi Toniko. Love your work and channel here :-) Thank you for the mention in this video. Just wanted to give a small input on the timeline in Dreams. You can ripple edit and do more there when combining the "Timeline Edit" (multiselect) with holding 1 finger down and draging an edge of a drawing with the Pencil at the same time. It is not well known and very hard to figure out on your own. But there are some hidden features with holding 1 finger down and draging the edge of a frame(drawing) at the same time. Then you can push and pull with ripple-effect.

I use Dreams because I really, REALLY have found I'm unfortunately reliant on Procreate's brush engine, and I really enjoy having a backstage (smth Toonsquid doesn't have). I imported some brushes to Toonsquid that I've use in Photoshop and CSP but they don't look or feel the same. I do think they over-promised in its initial launch. If they had called the initial launch a beta I would have been more understanding.
That said it really sounds like they have taken the criticisms to heart and the next big update for it is going to address a majority of them, which I really hope changes the animation game big time. Once they fix a lot of the UI issues + the much needed lasso tool, I think it will already be a huge game changer, especially if they continue to update it.

Let's say I want someone to very slightly nod their head in time with music and then get more and more "animated" as the song gets more intense... The micro-noddings will just not be recorded. i'd still looking forward for the future updates, even though i had bad experiences animating with Dreams.
    - Most of the time I have to combine both Procreate and Dreams just to working on a single shot, and it's time consuming
    - the layer settings is not versatile compared to Procreate
    - the eyedropper tool gets different color results
    - the drawing frames could have been better (only the switch frames part)
    - occasionally crash
    - procreate tools that I expected to be included not here (color tool, copy layer, reference, combine down, etc)
and it's definitely not user-friendly for users who just want to buy Dreams app, even worse, CSP ipad seems more efficient than PDs. I still like it, and hoping that the dev team can improve those problems in the next update :))

As it stands - if you know what you’re doing with keyboard shortcuts and customising the interface (which is complex and generally offputting to most) CSP is a terrific and very powerful tool. If I could pinch and zoom and then export that exact specific piece that would have been amazing. I think it's an excuse to say Dreams is not trying to be like other animation apps. While yes, their UI is definitely unique, the workflow is nothing like the others, looks interesting and to an extent can be fun to animate on because of the new interface. Procreate devs have no excuse to not include the standard tools for drawing/animations apps such as the lasso. It lacks elements on what makes a digital art software a digital art software. Basically 'early access' without them explicitly labeling it as one and it feels too incomplete and unfinished.
I don't see trying to make the app work for you as a good thing. There's no doubt that the end goal will be reached eventually after struggling with a relatively lengthy workflow. You can have fun trying to problem solve on Dreams, but other apps can provide a much better experience that doesn't have this issue in the first place.
** This is a very important point that should not be dismissed: It's been more than a year and the app is simply lacking as clearly expressed in the video. Toonsquid has one developer who's made a great animation app, while Procreate has a team of 100+ that can't even release standard digital tools. Toonsquid also has an upcoming V2 that will include a lot of new features that Procreate is only considering. That says something.
For the pro animators who claim this is their number one animation app, they were commissioned/paid by Procreate. It's an advertisement by influencers at that point. The app is incomplete and makes the workflow more of a struggle when animation is already a highly time consuming task, and nothing a pro animator can say will change that fact.
I wanted to like Dreams as I enjoyed using Procreate in general. I'm one of the artists who was excited about having a new animation app for iPad specially when it's coming from Procreate, but this is far too incomplete.
I understandable for them to release it in this state to try and gain income as they develop the app -- but this is the result of doing so and it shouldn't be normalized.
There are expectations that Dreams will become a very fun animation app and a great way for aspiring animators to start on. I agree. However, at its current state, I'm not touching this app until it catches up to with the better apps.

I honestly don’t get the hate about procreate dreams… I’ve managed to make some really cool animations that I’m proud of with it and I’ve seen many others make some you guys need to stop arguing over a app that only just came out a year ago in fact if you’ve been paying attention to procreates youtube they have mentioned that the lasso tool is coming to procreate dreams and a brand new frame by frame system so basically they just redoing the app. They have listened to your disappointments and they are working on it but they busy doing quality over quantity and making sure its a really good update. You know writing this down has made me realise the only problem is you guys are just afraid of change and this is very similar to why people who animate in myer don’t wanna switch to blender.
So I’m excited for procreate dreams future and I’m gonna keep learning how to make better animations on it and I hope you guys just wake up and stop making these dumb urgh procreate dreams sucks now vids

Dreams was confusing to use when I first used it, but I think the Procreate team will listen to the feedback and improve it.

Hey, if i correctly remember, you can actually ripple move frames by pressing down with two fingers on a track, and moving the needed frame with a pen!
It may be kinda uncomfortable, because you'll need to precisely pull the edge of the frame, and not the neighbouring frame, but it can be fixed just by zooming into the track where needed frame is placed!
    Hope that helps :D

the worst pat about the app is that it calls clips "content"... like i thought this company cared about the work that artists do and they relegate everything to that damn word 😭

If you press one finger somewhere on the timeline you can actualy make the single frames longer and the other frames will moove with it. Took me a while to find it out. But it works. THE APP IS GOD TIER!!! DON’T PLAY AROUND AND GRAB IT!!!
    - CAN MOVE FLAT IMAGES AS IF THEY WERE 3D
    - FRAME BY FRAME ANIMATION IS PERFECT THE WAY YOU CAN PLAN IN ADVANCE AND GRAW GESTURE LINE ON *DIFFERENT LAYERS*
-MOLD IMAGES (such as clothing) IN LAYERS TO HAVE THEM ANIMATE AT DIFFERENT TIMES, IMITATING REALISM
    - SPECIAL EFFECTS AND SOUNDS ARE EASY TO IMPORT
-YOU CAN ANIMATE FRAME BY FRAME OVER A MUSIC VIDEO
    - THE MORE LOGISTICS YOU KNOW, THE EASIER AND MORE INTUITIVE THE APP BECOMES

there was also an app called rough animator that i found to be a lot more intuitive than procreate dreams (more advanced than flipaclip) procreate dreams is definitely the prettiest app tho, and the brush engine is the best in procreate and procreate dreams.

@@ezrelab6637 flipaclip just always crashed for me and i got ADS EVERY MINUTE I WAS ON THE APP! also the brushes suck and everything is very pixely. now every flipaclip user i see are complaining about how strict and inflated it's becoming. i don't understand why people hate procreate dreams, it runs better than flipaclip 100% and sure you might need tutorials, but you learn how to use the app and theres plently of helpful tutorials on yt. i understand about the lasso tool situation but my gosh, its in beta. it'll take lots of time to make an update ESPECIALLY on a animation program. also, people just complain about not having the lasso tool too much and thats what gives it a bad reputation.. i feel bad for the creators, it seems like an amazing app but it's still in beta and some people do not know it's not finished. i am using it for storyboarding currently but not finished projects until it has those tools i need. i am keeping up on the procreate's annoucement of these updates, they are really working hard. the remade flipbook tool and lasso tool will come out shortly. for now, we have to be patient and use the time on making messy work rather than clean.
