Having landed going backwards over the ground in rapidly changing very bad conditions with steady wind 70% above stall and gusting well above that, on my 3rd landing attempt when a gust came around my left side and blew me 30' off the runway, entered a 30 degree bank trying to recover when the gust continued to come around behind and stalled me at 8' AGL. I can tell you that the wings provide a parachute effect. Mike's 30+ inches in a dead drop without wings is HUGE. The impact energy goes up nearly as the square of the height, so twice the FAA requirement is about 4 X the loading! BTW: wind did more damage to my plane getting it back in the hanger than the landing did....took 4 full days to replace bent and broken parts and back flying.

@@tomcoryell NO BS... I had 3 windows blown out last Saturday and damage to my T hanger door latches with 70+mph wind gusts. High plains hurricanes?
The 8 foot drop landing described above was in 2008 but I have flown backwards in high winds within the last 2 weeks. I fly from my 1800' grass strip on my ranch here in Wyoming in an ultralight plane with a stall speed below 20mph. A fairly high percentage of landings are with winds >50% of my stall speed. Landings in winds up to my ground effect stall speed are no problem but require some special technics.

After what Mike did on Draco's wings, I can't wait for the wing build. That's gonna be a multi-part vid series.

you and your family doesn't know the meaning of the word "stock" do you? lol. in the slow mo you can see the engine twist some. i'm sure it is within the tolerance you made it. i just wanted to say something incase you had heart filled eyes and didn't notice it lol. it would be cool if you had a copy of Scrappy for an R&D series of drops. if the motor mounts could take it i bet you could double the height . oh well though. good vid

@Justin.S - You beat me to it. I was definitely concentrating on the engine mounts during the drop tests as that huge heavy engine and massive prop hanging out there on the end of a small-diameter-tubing braced cantilever structure seems to me to be the area most susceptible to being overstressed. This includes the possibility of at least a bit of permanent deformation. I'm sure 'eagle eyes' Mike will inspect it properly as nothing gets by him, but WOW that waay over the top max-height drop test was a HUGE pucker factor!

maybe for testing/checking purposes, you should try to record the drop with some piezoelectric microphones through all the air frame, and then analyze it and look for cracks, pops, etc.
