a sign of great intelligence is the ability to explain complex theories and ideas in a manner than anyone can understand, that is the first thing that drew me to watching your show and also the attention to detail and work you put into what you do is inspirational

3 people influenced me to want to learn to fly, at 61 years old. Trent, Cory and Mike. Bought my RV-12, going to get flying lessons in my own plane, once it gets ferried back to me. It's the places you go, and how beautiful they look from above, in the air. That's what makes me want to get my license. It's my start.

Best mum and dad ever having allowed their kids to develop and follow their own interests. Tools and materials plus adventures from when they are very young doth create resilient and creative adults. Well done Mike on your youngest. He's going to be a fantastically successful adult. We definitely need more of that in this world.

The enthusiasm to build this airplane is contagious, sets a person on fire to do something constructive, give me a hammer so I can get started doing anything.

Indeed! He's literally inspired me to make my own design that I recently started on. We definitely need more of his optimism and enthusiasm in this world, especially in these times. I just can't get enough of how positive the dude is.

'...give me a hammer so I can get started doing anything."

People like Patey don't understand this concept, he basically won the lottery and thinks that anyone can be successful in the same way that he was.

The enthusiasm is definitely contagious, but what I love the best (I love it all) is the interaction with his son. I am a expat living in the Philippines, 72 years old with a six year old son. Most people would say that does not work, too much difference in age, but they would be wrong. My son helps me do everything from trimming the weeds to fixing the motorcycle, to cooking to washing the dishes, I never had that and am glad he does. Mike has been an example that I try to follow. Ive got over 50 years in aviation so I really enjoy everything on this channel but the greatest enjoyment I get is the example Mike sets in life, just in that he is giving the world a blessing.

I'd like to hear the comments from the guys who designed the original "Carbon Cub." They've got to be scratching their heads going, "... what the hell is he doing????" It's not nearly finished and it's already waaaaay beyond any other Carbon Cub on the planet!
A lot of people are having a hard time maintaining patience waiting for the first flight.

I've got to say, this series is totally addictive. Mike the whole mad scientist thing is totally working for you, the more I watch, the more enthusiastic I get about getting back into flying, after having been away since 1992. Keep it going, I love it!

Rob, Get back into it if at all possible, That is what I am doing. I shopped around until I found a deal I could not pass up. I bought a 1961 Aircoupe that was sitting in a T-hangar, collecting dust, for less than $5,000.00. I drove over 1200 miles each way with a trailer and took the wings off and hauled it from South Texas to East Georgia. I am weeks from finishing it and my son has helped me rework everything. He is excited about flying as I am. Good luck and God bless!

Just a plug for the Best Tug. I needed a new tug for a new plane. I also wanted an auxiliary power supply for doing avionics updates. A Best Tug was more expensive than a normal gas powered tug, but the ability to act as an auxiliary power supply made it less than the cost of a gas tug and a power supply. Love my Best Tug (I have the Bravo). No oil. No gas. No pulling start cords. Moves my plane quickly and easily. No problem in Michigan winter. Appreciate Mike and Mark offering one in a contest. They have always been generous.

I have taught my son this with wrecked, and broken down cars, and now we are reworking the Aircoupe/Ercoupe together. He is learning how to fix aircraft just like I am. Very cool!

Driving my wife crazy telling her about your videos, but she watched a couple and can see why I find them so entertaining. I’m not an aviation guy, but I AM a machine guy. I just love things that work and move. I got the aviation bug from my wife’s cousin, who built a plane in his garage (Murphy Rebel), then decided he wanted an upgrade and built himself an RV-8A. His Rebel got the tandem rudder pedal kit installed and became a flight trainer, a very noble occupation for a well-crafted home built. I just lived all of the interesting gear needed to put a plane together, all things I’d never seen before. I bucked a bunch of rivets in the RV’s main spar, so I guess I helped build a plane. In short, I get to live vicariously through TH-cam. Thanks for what you do.😬

That being said, this comment is actually great - use of zip ties in BDSM is really frowned upon these days because if you get them too tight you cant get them off, and they cut off blood circulation (everyone got very angry when the 50 shades of grey movies used tons of zip ties in unsafe manners). The rubber lining would be nicer on your lady, but the main appeal is that i'm pretty sure Mike mentioned in a previous video that Grip Lock Ties can be undone/released, really mitigating the danger of over-tightening then not being able to cut them loose.

Well Mike I'm living in the Uk and I've only ever come across one man like you who's brain is working way ahead of what he is working on and building. I spent half of my working life working underwater where there was nothing ever built for what you needed. I used to surface sit down and have a beer with this guy and tell him the problem I had underwater. The next day I would come to work and he would say try this and he never let me down it would work. You could tell him a problem and he would think about it and sure it would be fixed the next day. Your in the same mold your brain is way ahead of what you are building the only difference is you have the ability and skill to do it yourself, wonderful to watch and I can't wait to see Scrappy built Good Luck.

Good for Dex! I did the exact same thing with jet skis at his age and made a nice chunk of change doing it. Most of all, it set me up really well for engineering school. It might seem like just a "greasy parts changing" hobby but there is a TON to learn from it that I'm still leaning on today as both a hobbyist and military pilot. Keep it up!

Mike, I always wanted to fly in the military. As a USAF brat I watched F4s fly out of Elmendorf AB then I found out I can't tell the difference between red and green. My love over flight never waned. My first RC Model since 1989 is the Draco. I have almost one-hour full flight time. The 3D model acts up in ground air as the Full scale did. I LOVE IT! I didn't fly in 25mph winds in Ok. today.

Greetings from Spain! I am currently doing my bachelor´s thesis on buckling of aerospace structures. Keep up the great content :)

Well if he is doing only static load deformation, even with huge meshes it might be quite straigthforward and not take ages but who knows, maybeMike did also built a custom made supercalculator during his free time :P
He could also have recreated the geometry only using thrusses and thus having 1D element to speed up, but you know once the cad is done, and you have plenty of work to do, you can launch the simulation and come back one week after to see the results, it won't stop you from working !!

If Mike provides us with a 3d model or at least blueprints, you could definitely build it out of foam or balsa or even completely out of carbon (hard to do). If you'd build it out of foam with a wingspan of around 35-40 inches (1m) the cost would be something like 150$ for the electronics, remote and materials. If you never built anything before i'd use foam board. Easy to cut and shape and you glue it with hot glue!

    • @g6rcteam81
      @g6rcteam81 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@linecraftman3907 To small I only build super scale giant 1/3scale 155inch wingspan or bigger. Small stuff outta foam that gets dented & paint wont stick to for very long is great for A toy.... Balsa wood and play and wrap the fuse in carbon. Also I draw my own plans from pictures and specs. I can build one for about 5,000 but that would be without making A dime and I only build for cash/ ready to fly 8,000. Im thinking about converting A balsa usa Super cub I built and flew in TOPGUN its1/3 scale into A scrappy. It had an off runway event that caused some small damage and needs to be recovered anyways its 80cc gas.
