With only two seats and with the ability to carry large loads under the wings he should make some carbon fiber people carrying pods. Can use the excess electrical power for a heat pump to heat or cool the pod interior. They would easily double up as extra cargo carrying capacity for day to day or S&R usage. Bonus points for being able to air-drop cargo like life rafts with supplies or cases of beer for thirsty campers. Integrate the Garmin system to auto release when drop calculator indicates an on target landing.

I don't think we'll get a HH Scrappy. Mike out-engineered their whole team on this one, and they could never do it justice at a price point that would sell. I hate saying that, because I would love to park a Scrappy next to my Draco.
By the time the world realizes your engineering madness and capabilities, you will be rescuing and recovering lost satellites in space. You are great man, let nothing holds you down in being a blessing to humanity.

Mike you are truly one of the best guys I've ever witnessed in the field of aviation. You really seem like a wonderful person. I'd love to meet ya some day. I'm a disabled retired veteran with a big heart for helping other. That's why its easy for me to spot someone that has a big heart that cares of others around you. So happy I come across your page. Really enjoy the video's.
1: Oversized engine & prop capable of near VTOL thrust in still air. Check. 2: Wings able to hang ground search vehicles and don't know the word Stall. Check. 3: Suspension that can handle hard landings in rough terrain. Check. 4: Enough power to build a second plane in the middle of nowhere. Check. Master plan: Search and Rescue confirmed. Seeing all of the pieces over the build I can finally see the big picture, and it's very obvious once pointed out. Excellent work Mike and Co.
I'm surprised there is no carbon fiber shear wall spanning underneath those numerous solar slots. Like to see a Bend Test now. And a temp reading camera monitoring the inverters.
This has got to be the most capable Search and Rescue plane ever built! Absolutely incredible engineering and forethought for the mission! Thank you for sharing all your thinking and rationale as well as the execution of the build by you and your staff.
Agreed. Full redundancy, solar, equipment power, permanent emergency kit onboard, motorbikes on the wings, the list just never ends. Every time you think Mike's finished hes build something else that nobody would even have dreamed of. By this point Scrappy doesn't need a hanger, it's going to have to launch from underneath Mike's swimming pool to the Thunderbirds theme. This plane *IS* search and rescue.
Mike, you should take home lots of awards from ACCA this year. You out did yourself with designing, engineering and building Scrappy. And we got to come along for the entire process. Hope to see you in Illinois and Wisconsin. in a few days. I'm just blown away at what you can do.
Awwww man! That’s just cruel! I thought we were going to see the wings go on today. Mike, your innovation continues to blow my mind. Keep it up and back to work!
Wow! I can't wait for the Mike Patey new video series, "Scrappy's Back Country Adventures"! This is the best aviation and creativity channel of all TH-cam!
Wow, Mike, I didn't see solar panels coming! You have packed a whole bunch of capability into your baby. So cool and right. Scrappy is one of a kind, truly a world first. I can't wait to see it all come together and up there. Good luck we're all with you.
Just when you're convinced Mike has included everything possible on Scrappy; he introduces a complete solar system and a humongous double paint booth. Iove this guy. What a joy watching this process. Now how can I hitch a ride to air venture!!!!

This man NEVER runs out of new and innovative ideas. He is building a UNIMOG expedition vehicle with wings, The baddest monster truck in the sky. I love the solar panels and pure sine wave inverter.
I can’t wait to see how many of these great ideas are going to find their way into Draco X. Imagine huge double a arm suspension on a Wilga. Say goodbye to Wilga wobble!
No one has seen the ducted fans that deploy out of the wings for VTOL yet…ha! Always enjoy watching engineering on the bleeding edge. Keep up the talents on loan from God! Can we get some bloopers, I know there has to be one somewhere like, oh crud I bolted that on upside down or humm I think that goes on the other wing!
I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of design he comes up with for the floats down the road. Also have you all heard about the Alphadan engine? It is expected to have PT6 power out of a light and cost-effective 4 cylinder. Loving the build! I hope the wing design makes it into GA and for other rescue and fire bombing aircraft. Congratulations to Mike achieving this milestone. Have fun at Oshkosh! Can’t wait to see this beast fly and see all that it can do!
Now don't forget to take the camera on your back country trips! Would love to see how far back into the woods you can get! I would watch every episode of a Camping with Scrappy vlog series.
Now it's starting to look GOOOOD. I am worried about a solar panel that acts as a lifting surface. With the weight of that plane, won't the panels be pulled off from low pressure? I thought this plane was crazy before. Now we're into insanity. Love it.
Looks like there is 25 bolts into rivnuts for each solar panel, plus the front edge tight slot. I'm more than sure this is over engineered, just like the rest of the plane.
Hey Mike, this is insanely awesome!! Next video, "alright guys, I flew Scrappy to Oshkosh!!!". You have no idea how much I enjoy these videos!! It's always been a dream of mine to build an airplane with my Dad. Might as well just do it thanks to you!! Have a safe flight to Osh 2021!!! One day I'll visit from South Africa!
Absolutely incredible the “Swiss Army knife” features you incorporated into Scrappy! Maybe you could get Victorinox to sponsor Scrappy, or at least make you a Scrappy centric version of one of their knives to go with the “kit”! Very awesome adding in the solar power capabilities.
Usually the last 10% takes 90% of the time, but it seems like you thought of literally everything and planned perfectly from the beginning so it's all coming together like a fine swiss watch at the end. This is truly amazing and inspiring to see.
Even with a socialist takeover around the corner (predicted over 50 years ago by Ezra Taft Benson), America is still the most free country in the world atm.
Mike, Scrappy is incredible, but what I love the most is you always are thinking of others and ways to help them in a bad situation. God Bless you and your family. Your inspiration is priceless!
Seems like Flight Chops let the cat out of the bag and Scrappy will be at Oshkosh which will be incredible! Mike, please hear me out on this, I came up to Airventure in 2019 and I was so pumped to see Draco fly, unfortunately, it sat in the Garmin booth the entire week. As a consumer, I totally get the need to support sponsorships but at the end of the day, I think it's only fair to show the fan base some love and put the airplane in the air during the event to showcase its flying qualities. Just throwing it out there. I appreciate what Garmin does for GA and it's the exact reason why we went with full Garmin G3X setups in our latest build, I just wish they would release the airplane for flight during the week...
Hey Mike I hope you know how much these videos mean to us! I can’t thank you enough, I have my PPL but haven’t been able to make the time to fly over the last few years and am no longer current. I love aviation and your videos are my main method of getting my fix! This week has been tough for me, last Sunday I had a Grand Mal Seizure, Im feeling fine now but we aren’t sure what caused it. I’m working with my neurologist and FAA medical examiner with hopes to retain my FAA medical. It will be an uphill battle but I’m hopefully I’ll be able to continue my passion of aviation, if not I’ll always have your videos! I actually live in Logan Utah so I love seeing Wasatch mountains in your videos! Thanks again for all you do for the aviation world! Can’t wait to see Scrappy get in the air!
Your level of engineering is absolutely mind blowing and your dedication is inspiring. Wish I could have had the opportunity to work for you and gain just a fraction of what goes thru your head. Keep up the amazing work.
Very cool, I certainly hope you have some rf chokes on the lines. Inverters tend to cause frequency within the battery circuit. It can build static electricity. Since it's right next to fuel I certainly hope you took precautions for shielding it. Other than that very cool
Oh my gosh your killing with the suspense. I want to see Scrappy fly so bad. when are you going to build the electric plane that will fly forever? is that next. You could call it Freedom. Hope you make an RC model of Scrappy. I'm already saving up for it now.
Yeah, I have those on my truck and they have a thick plastic back. I guess if you bend them to wing shape the become even more stiff. I think that's why he went with narrow 50w instead of 100watt panels.
I would not be surprised to see a video showing a wing attachment that operates as a solar grill! Mike is not going to be stranded in the boonies and not have a hot meal! Amazed to no end at his engineering prowess!

I don't think we'll get a HH Scrappy. Mike out-engineered their whole team on this one, and they could never do it justice at a price point that would sell. I hate saying that, because I would love to park a Scrappy next to my Draco.
@@citizenblue I've been thinking the same thing. Good luck horizon hobbies
@@citizenblue a model for flight sim would be a nice consolation prize.
Batmobile of the sky. Epic build Mike.
I've been watching the scrappy build from the start, and I'm just blown away every time.
Hello there 👋👋,how are you doing today?hope you had a nice day?GOD BLESS YOU!!
By the time the world realizes your engineering madness and capabilities, you will be rescuing and recovering lost satellites in space. You are great man, let nothing holds you down in being a blessing to humanity.
Hahahaha this was a great one. Mike is from out of this world
Are you building a plane or a flying off-road motorhome? Every time I think you're done, you do something else to put me in awe. Wow. Just wow.
@T.J. Kong So, you're saying he's building a Transformer. I'll endorse this. Would recommend.
I'm speechless....... If ever there was a way to time travel, I'd travel to July 24th, 2021 just for the next video. You never cease to amaze me, Mike.
That is pioneer day in Utah!
I mean, you CAN travel forward in time... just by existing 😂
it would be so sick to see draco and scrappy side by side flying but so stoked to see the wings almost finished cant wait to see scrappy in the backcountry flying
These have got to be the most complex wings ever designed and built.
I doubt it
@@IkeCoblentz 😀👍
For GA perhaps. AF (armed forces) has all the nutty folding wing and sweep wing designs plus whatever the heck is going on with the Osprey lol
This just gets more insane each part of the build. Cannot wait for some footage of places scrappy visits in the future
And now solar panels. This aircraft just keeps getting more and more amazing.
Mike, you should take home lots of awards from ACCA this year. You out did yourself with designing, engineering and building Scrappy. And we got to come along for the entire process. Hope to see you in Illinois and Wisconsin. in a few days. I'm just blown away at what you can do.
Having this guy as a dad must be awesome!
Awwww man! That’s just cruel! I thought we were going to see the wings go on today.
Mike, your innovation continues to blow my mind. Keep it up and back to work!
thx mike and ron and crew for my ear to ear grin as scrappy backed beetween those wings . what a moment!!! congratz guys
I can't stop thinking about the future aeronautical engineers Mike and his brother are inspiring. Someday, a pilot is going to say "yeah, I was in a jam, but the Patey device saved my hide."

Say goodbye to Wilga wobble!
since Draco is designed for STOL Mike would have to shed weight somewhere else or need another powerful motor to get up to speed...
@@mastex5575 he has that turbine in the case
With every build exceeding the last , Draco X is going to be EPIC !
@@patricktennant1585 Yes he already stated that Draco X will have a more powerful turbine than the original
@@fredbugden3511 I think I can almost picture what Mike’s going to do, but he always surprises me.
What an unbelievable airplane design.......I think you set a new standard! Great work, fun to follow the Scrappy build.
Scrappy Is going to be able to make it to Mars at this rate!
They will use it on Mars for alien search and rescue.
But Mike, the atmosphere on Mars is too thin for effective STOL…
Mike: Unlesss…
@@ddrsteen Nailed it!
It’s already signed up in the next “Fast and Furious” movie. Scrappy pulls Earth out of the path of giant asteroid.
Now it's starting to look GOOOOD. I am worried about a solar panel that acts as a lifting surface. With the weight of that plane, won't the panels be pulled off from low pressure? I thought this plane was crazy before. Now we're into insanity. Love it.
Exactly my thought as well. The fact those appear to slide in and out so easy is scary on the upper surface of a wing.
Wondering the same. Mike clearly knows what he's doing though so it would be good to know why this isn't a problem.
It’s a little concerning having that many lithium batteries in the wings as well but I’m sure Mike has considered the potential dangers
@@professorvoluck9311 my concern as well! I have seen many lithium batteries explode!
Looks like there is 25 bolts into rivnuts for each solar panel, plus the front edge tight slot. I'm more than sure this is over engineered, just like the rest of the plane.
Aerodynamically shaped pods that could carry a multitude of specialty rescue equipment that mount to the motorcycle wing mounts might be useful.
I jokingly said it in the other video, but he's absolutely going to whip up a whole assortment of attachments for his powered "hard points".
I'm going to cry thanks for posting fast! Super excited to see the wings on!! All of us in Alaska can't wait!
Very awesome adding in the solar power capabilities.
but only the XXL would fit the theme 🤣
Wenger Giant is the world record multi tool, Victorinox wishes they could Wenger Giant.
@@RadDadisRad yes but Wenger is not producing knives anymore… they were bought by Victorinox few years ago…
Usually the last 10% takes 90% of the time, but it seems like you thought of literally everything and planned perfectly from the beginning so it's all coming together like a fine swiss watch at the end. This is truly amazing and inspiring to see.

It was great while it lasted.

Who needs stealth when you got scrappy

I very rarely post, but this just may be the greatest aircraft ever built. It's incredible. It's over engineered. It does too much. And I LOVE IT.
With all the planning, the wings came along very fast!!
Your level of engineering is absolutely mind blowing and your dedication is inspiring. Wish I could have had the opportunity to work for you and gain just a fraction of what goes thru your head. Keep up the amazing work.
I can't imagine messing up a high mountain camp site with a movie!!

@@amytaylor8487 You as well.
“But wait there’s more”, that’s what I think every new episode….. Great job, amazing airplane
Mike, are those solar panels sufficiently stiff that they won't flutter without being laminated to an aluminum or carbon fiber panel?
Yeah, I have those on my truck and they have a thick plastic back. I guess if you bend them to wing shape the become even more stiff. I think that's why he went with narrow 50w instead of 100watt panels.
If its the top surface of the wing which gives lift, how are these plastic sheets attached and going to contribute to the overall area?
And also, how are those panels secured so that they don’t blow out during flight?
Should be stronger than cloth fabric which has been used for decades.
🤔 yep
@@gvc76 the panels have several holes around the perimeter that screws go thru into nut plates. The panels are screwed down to the wing
Scrappy is the world's most expensive weldcing cart, I love it!
It just doesn't stop. You guys are true pioneers. Keep up the good work.
I would not be surprised to see a video showing a wing attachment that operates as a solar grill! Mike is not going to be stranded in the boonies and not have a hot meal! Amazed to no end at his engineering prowess!

There is military grade... then there is Patey grade! This airplane has redundancy to spare!
