    For programmers. You will need 16GB of ram. I tried the 8GB version of M1 and thats not enough when you have tabs open and you want to use e.g. docker. Or even some Vscode and Terminal windows can eat up your memory, and the system starts to swap. But if you want the 16GB version, you will get much more if you buy the Macbook Pro 14.

    • @Kaugar
      @Kaugar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@carbocationful If you check it, with these specifications the price is way too high for a macbook air. If you give it 16gb/1Tb you are at the same price as the pro models. You should buy the 14" or 16" macbook pro. For running machine learning algorithms you will need more than 4 core performance. So you can wait for M2 Pro/Max or buy the current Pro laptops.

    Would love to see a video doing comparison between M2 MacBook Air vs M1 Max 14 inch MacBook Pro (purely based on price and keeping aside whether or not you are pro user). When you add some upgrades to base M2 Air, it quickly comes into the territory of 14inch pro. And at that point I want to understand if it makes sense to go with 14inch pro to get better screen, better transfer speeds, better ports, better performance etc.

    • @gs7828
      @gs7828 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would say that if you're going to spend the same and your objective is performance, choose the Pro. The M1 Pro is already more powerful than M2, so you've got that. The Air has no fan and will get hotter much quicker, even though that's not a daily issue.
      For light work, I would only care to get the 10-core M2 and that's it. Otherwise it would defeat the point of spending less for the Air compared to the Pro.

    Thanks for review. Looking forward to hands-on reviews. I see no reason to buy Apple power supplies - much better (and smaller) options out there. I have a MBP with M1 Max and have only ever used power supply that came with it once. At home office I use a powerbrick/hub (ADG) that supplies power and connectivity to extra display, external drive, network, etc so just plug in a single TB cable and am done. On road, I carry and INVZI 100W supply that is half the size of Apple supply AND has extra ports - and even then, the battery is so good I rarely need to pull it out whereas with my old Intel MBP, even for an hour meeting I would plug in so I didn’t deplete battery. Likewise I don’t care that it charges a bit slower than 140W as rarely tight on power. I could use MagSafe cable with it but since I carry TB cables anyway for various purposes, just one more cable to carry so I don’t bother (maybe if I only had two TB ports like on an Air or was back in classrooms where I was worried about tripping over cord, it might make a difference). Just my 2¢, but generally followed by everyone in my company. (Obviously if I ran laptop all out for hours and hours a day, that would be the one time I might need 140W and MagSafe). Thanks again.

    • @MaxTechOfficial
      @MaxTechOfficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Definitely expensive, but keep in mind that unified memory is way faster and way more efficient than RAM with intel machines, and of course, MacOS has gotten more efficient as well in the last few years. We compared 8GB M1 to 16GB intel-based Macs using the same latest OS, and the 8GB performed shockingly well in terms of stressing the RAM and how much it slowed down when RAM was full compared to original numbers. In post responsiveness and performance the 8GB performs like 16GB used to, and so on unless you have a specific task that has to keep things in the RAM as storage, but even then if it does slow down its still way faster than intel because of performance increases. Not saying that Apple shouldn't give us more, but Apple Silicon works great with less ram. It also has tile memory so a lot of graphics tasks don't hit the ram and stay there, and there is way less duplication of files in memory than before.

    Why isn't any TH-camr mentioning the obvious, that if you spec the new Air to the same ram and 512gb storage as the 14 inch (which in sure a lot of people will as 8gb and 256gb really doesn't cut it at this price point), there's a very little price difference for a lot more features in the 14 inch? You need to make a buyer's guide video comparing the Air to the 14 inch Pro because the price jump in the Air has made the 14 inch a lot more compelling, even for someone who isn't a video editor, because they both fall into similar price ranges if you spec the Air to any degree.
    You get a larger screen, far superior XDR display, far more ports that ends the dongle life, slightly thinner bezels, far more powerful chip that will ultimately give you more headroom into the future, better sustained performance, naming just a few improvements, all for just a little over 200 bucks of a difference which could be even less if you go to the Apple refurbished store or sales on Amazon (which we definitely should see in Amazon's Prime Day sales next month when the Air releases)

      maybe ur circumstance is special, but i think anyone whos going to upgrade a MBA should realise that the base model MBP might be better for them for a few more dollars

    I always consult TH-cam reviews before I buy any apple products. A few years ago I bought the MacBook Air (2020) and it got as hot as max said and the battery drained insanely fast like he warned it would. I ended up returning it and got the 4 Thunderbolt port pro instead and it’s been going strong for going on 3 years now! Keep in mind, I only use it for school, writing lots and lots of essays; but, the upgraded ram keeps my computer running smoothly and it was 100% worth it. I made the mistake of not upgrading it once years ago and I said I never would again. In my opinion it’s valuable no matter what because it makes your computer run smoothly all the time.

    I have no experience with the M1 MacBook Air. How does it compare in weight to the MacBook Pro 14"? It's hard to imagine how much difference .7 or .8 lbs makes in regular use, movement and transport. And at the Apple store, they don't really let you hold a MacBook Air without being tethered (antitheft). So I can't get a gauge of how it really feels compared to the 14".

    • @ridar4407
      @ridar4407 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It feels significantly lighter. The Pro 14 isn't bulky, by any means, but as a smaller person it definitely felt substantial to me. I exclusively used 14 inch windows computers before I picked up a Macbook Pro 14 for work and it feels heavier/more bulky than the other ultrabooks I've owned. It's not cumbersome but it is noticeable.
      The Air feels like, well, air. It's so light that it feels like some of the tablets I own. For a while, I was worried about the build quality and performance because of how darn light it was. It performs well from what I've noticed, though.
      So while on paper, it's not a big difference, you can definitely tell, especially if you're a smaller person. Neither is going to be a problem in transport/daily use; I only really notice it while I'm carrying my laptop around with one hand

    Many comments here and TH-cam review videos keep repeating the same issue: "for $100, you can get the next better version, and for $200 you can get the best 14" option available so no one should get the 24gb RAM version".
    Yes, majority of buyers care a lot about total costs and compare it to the next best option, but there are also those that want the lightest laptop they can have (2.7 lbs) in the smallest size factor (13.6”) with a powerful 24gb RAM and 2 tb of memory, eve if they are now into near M1 Max territory.
    Some people just want to buy what they want (lightest laptop available) with maybe some future proofing (24gb RAM instead of 16gb RAM) regardless of costs as it is a type of investment for their own joy. Some people do not want to lug around a 16” heavy laptop or may not care about a micro-LED screen or even extra ports.

    I love my 16” MBP M1 Pro but I’m considering the M2 MBA. Watching the video comparing the M1 Pro to the M2 it seems to be a slight difference as far as performance. I don’t push my MBP at all, but got it due to the buttery life, smooth 120hz refresh rate, port options, and the beautiful screen.
    Only cons with the MBP in my opinion though is that it’s heavy as hell when handling it after some time and that two pound difference next to the MBA is significant.

      @@definingslawek4731 It will be faster because of better thermals. Wattage is a good indicator under similar architectures. MacBook Pro 14 is 96W while M2 MacBook Air is 67W at max (not sure about this since the default option is only 35W for dual ports).

      @@momoware are you comparing charger wattage? Real TDP might be better. Chargers could be heavily over specced just for fast charging, and also as the battery gets larger and larger you need more watts just to charge at 'normal' speed.

      @@definingslawek4731 I'm using charger wattage because it's related to real TDP and M2 MacBook Air doesn't have TDP info out yet... By the looks of it its operating TDP might be around 35W because of the default dual port charger.

    Good info. I would add a couple of considerations. A big Excel model Can eat on your memory so 16 Gb ram is my sugestión if you are heavy on excel modeling.
    About the storage I prefer to pay additional internal storage to avoid having to plug external drives on planes or airports. If you are a mobile professional (a consultant) an additional device to carry and plug is an inconvenience that you don’t want

    For music production that has lots VST's, 16Gb memory with 1TB model should be enough to be used for the next 6 years.
