I had to turn in the maxed out 16" macbook pro I used for iOS/Android development when I got laid out, so I needed a decent temporary replacement below 2K to go freelance and training before getting into another corp again. The two options were M2 Air and the M2 Pro , both with the same price, same specs: 512 SSD, 8Gb ram, 10 GPU cores. I happily gave up the Pro´s "good speakers" and and went for the Air, and got a 1080p, 0.60 extra inches of screen, 200 grams less of weight in exchange. From my previous experience with Apple, it's always recommended to avoid 1st gen from a redesigned device, which applies to the new MacBook air M2 shape. I should get an old one for now.
Thanks for the clarification. This is one of the most hard decision making to purchase either M1 or M2 MacBook Air, especially the moment you love the new design, but there are points with you can't accept (especially the heat sink & SSD).
@@michaelsherman5678 They are bringing out a new one of those soon too. These computers are all way powerful enough already but avoiding upgradeitis is an always problem.
I bought the m1 MBA a month before the M2 came out and I remember just feeling gutted that I spent money on an older gen product but as I’m watching videos and reading articles, I see that my M1 MBA is still great value in 2022.
I think this is an issue of an Uber liberal company pandering to their sheep audience which will be forced to buy their pro pro machines and get in line. Internal retail associates are severely unhappy with company culture and also splintered between how they sell these devices. FYI
Glad I got the M1 MacBook Air last year. As much as the M2 MacBook Air design looks appealing, M1 MacBook Air provides so much power for the affordable price.
Yeah I'm in the same boat. The speakers on the M1 also surprised me the first time I heard them, because they're great. Too bad the M2 sounds a bit tinier.
Agree I think the M1 air was a real leap. The M2 is just a stopgap - I like the M2 design, but I also still love the M1 air. As the M1 is still for sale, I’d still consider it for the price as you can upgrade the M1 - plus the M1 throttles less. I think the next gen macs might get apple rethinking how it’s approaching things.
I'm now wondering - could Apple have done the same thing with the M1 Macbook Airs that are being manufactured now? If there is a shortage and they are using single high-density chips, it may be necessary to purchase and test a current Macbook Air M1 base spec to ensure that its higher performance is still the case. Most people are comparing their older M1s to the new M2, has anyone tested a more recently built M1?
Nope bought a m1 air in juli. MacBook was build in mai, and i have read and write speeds of over 2000 mb/s. Its definitely not because of a chip shortage.
I think it’s possible and sadly no one checks them. Video like that would be great. Many manufacturers of SSDs or cars used old technology instead of what was declared at first.
I think we need more TH-camrs like you, who give a complete frank overview of the product. I have been using a 2014 Macbook Pro since nearly 7 years & have been seriously considering upgrading to the M2 Macbook Air. This video has made me aware of what to consider & expect when I think of going for this machine. Thanks a ton for this.
@@dijahmedi4882I would also like to know. My GF's 2013 MacBook Pro has effectively died and she needs something new for school. I think she's going to need to get the 16gb 512ssd
After all this reviews, i came out with one conclusion, the M1 macbook air still the best value for the price. Apple failed to go with the MacBook air to the next level. Thanks max tech.
I think M1 lineup was so good because Apple gave their all in order to prove their new silicon's capitilities and convince the consumers. Now that their goals have been achieved, they're starting to backtrack by giving us the bare minimum specs all over again.
It actually doesnt. In Europe we show the end price (with tax). In America is the oposite. In EU we used to call companies scamaers when they did this ,but I think it was banned with EU directive. Also it could be something my country banned because everything marketed has to be with the end price in view (unless you qualify for some discount).
@@mowtow90 What you write is true. But I recently bought the M1 and it cost €1040 (tax included), but the M2 started selling for €1499. So the difference between these notebooks is approximately €500, which is quite a large amount. So, firstly, it is cheaper in the US (even if you add taxes) and secondly, the pricing policy is adapted to salaries in the US.
Having watched all your M2 MBA videos, the M1 seems like a smart buy. The 10-core issue is laughable. And the M1 is substantially cheaper with not much discernible real world performance loss. I don’t think the M2 sound was worse on the playback test - it sounded much smoother and richer to me.
I think, unless you know that you can get the M2 with the higher performance, and you know you're going to use it, it's better to get the M1 Air, and even use the extra money to upgrade that if you need. M2 Air looks great but it's no match for the value of the M1 Air.
Thanks for the great video! I was debating waiting for the M2 Air to replace my older Air, but decided to go with the Macbook Pro 14 and couldn't be happier. Keep up the great work!
I’m actually hoping the M1 Pro 14 goes on sale to like $1500 at some point (Bestbuy has it at $1800) because I’m used to the iPad pro 12” mini-led display. It’s an amazing screen…which hogs a lot of battery (if you keep brightness up like I do). As much as I love my Vizio OLED the iPad is just so damn good. Add on top better speakers and GPU. I think that by the time you future proof the air at 16gb and 512gb (I mean 256gb is only decent on my iPhone) it’ll be over $1600. At that point the 14 is a Way better machine. And since I have the iPad Magic Keyboard I don’t really need a MacBook, I just want a MacOS computer to try stuff like the extended desktop. Yeah i really don’t need both though 😅
I knew the M2 wouldn't be able to live up to the hype based on how good the M1 was. Apple deliberately made the software worse but put some make-up on it to make it more appealing than the M1. If they didn't care about profits and listened to what people wanted, they would definitely beat out Microsoft in market share in the long run with apple silicon.
It’s hard for me to agree with everything you said, particularly about them caring about profits. I don’t know where you live but in our mostly capitalistic economy here in the United States that’s basically the sole existence of a company, to make profits. BUT I do believe they shouldn’t be misleading in their marketing as far as performance and such. People should know what they’re buying with their hard earned money.
I don't really know what people were expecting with the M2, it's got a solid 15% more power than the M1, that's good enough in my book. The problem is, this Macbook Air and the Pro 13 are poorly priced and designed. I mean, they're not terrible but it's obvious Apple designed them with 16/512 in mind, and the price isn't really fair.
@@sammyjammy6647 every company exists to make profit, that's obvious. But Apple always sell themselves as "good quality, top notch performance, etc etc" only to end up gimping these machines with slow SSD and in the case of the 13 Pro an outdated design. They live in this particular place where they create almost perfect products... but only once every three attempts.
Really shock with the amount of problems that the new MacBook Air has 😓. I still love the midnight color and the new design, but it seems that the better choice is a M1 MacBook Air or the 14 inch MacBook Pro.
"We're not trying to hate on this Macbook at all" ... goes on the point out all the flaws in multiple videos for the past week. 😂 There's no need to pull punches, if it isn't up to par then call Apple out on it.
This new MacBook air chassis was likely designed for the future 3nm chip and beyond. The thermals are too constrained for the overclocked and overpowered m2 chip
Perhaps Apple should have stayed with the M1 MacBook Air design for M2 for one more cycle to achieve proper cooling. Maybe M2 was supposed to be manufactured using a 3 nm process but that got delayed.
Thanks for keeping the consumers aware and informed. I find most the issues to not be a big deal besides the SSD but as stated each person has different needs and what may not be an issue for me could be a big deal for someone else.
Could we please have MBA M2 16/512 vs Mac Pro 14' performance comparison ? I feel like many people are wondering if the extra $150-200 are worth it for going with the Pro against speced up MBA M2.
Love that this video took a close look to little-looked aspects of the MBA such as the feel of the trackpad and keyboard in comparison to the M1 version. Nice attention to detail!
I really love how the m1 seemed like the perfect laptop because it stays cooler and had fast ssd speeds that made 8gigs of ram act like 16 gigs of ram. The m2 is certainly a step backwards because it did not really live up to why people loved the m1 so much but it certainly is still a powerful machine I just hoped that this issues did not happen because it could have been easily fixed by apple through adding a proper heat sink and including 2 ssd nand chips on the base model.
Whenever there’s a design upgrade, they almost ALWAYS have some or the other issue, which get resolved with internal upgrades over the years. I’m just very let down by all these problems cause, was really excited to get one of these.
just get one of these. I have the M1 MBA and now I have the M2 MBA, the MBA M2 performs faster than the M1 for sure. If you don't have the M1 and want to get a new MBA, just get the M2. you won't be disappointed.
Some people say you were too hard on apple , but i think you were fair. The problem was your disapointed tone ... but you love Macs so i get it. 🙂 I've only just begun to be a mac user so i try to watch all your videos and i'm very pleased with the work you do here. Keep up the good work.
You should try to make a comparison of the base model 8/256 and 16/256 for those ones who own external SSDs to see a difference of power and speed. Apple experts say more ram can make SSD faster and improves the performance of the chip cuz of the unification. Just suggesting
But I don't think you should get 256 GB one if you are going with 16 GB ram because even if you use external SSD it's gonna store resources temporarily in the machine's SSD only which is slow and also it's very small for any professional use case. For normal case it's okay but normal case doesn't require 16 GB unified memory
you can put as much RAM as you want. You still have 1 NAND chip for storage and you lost the dual channel connection that you get from 512 on. There wont be a diff.
@@xeon2k8 that's simply not true, look up artisright's test. It should be his last video. He concluded the 16 gb upgrade is way more impactful than the 512. Maxtech had a decent test themselves but they tested base vs 16/512. He changed 2 variables so attributing any performance uplift to one of the variables is difficult
@@who_what Yojansel Cuevas said "Apple experts say more ram can make SSD faster" that's simply not true. Also check the video you mentioned, minute 14.05, he shows Photoshop with 56GB fie and the 512 version kills it, hence what i mentioned, on tasks that rely solely on the SSD you can throw as much RAM as you want, there wont be a diff.
Very much underwhelmed by the MBA M2. Have waited alot for the M2, I really like the new design and the fact they brought back magsafe, but the additional price hike make me regret my decision of not buying a M1 earlier and waiting for the upgrade. Am probably going to buy the M1 now😵
I really like the new M2 MacBook Air midnight color but if the color scratches easily, then that's just too disappointing. The baseline SSD speed on the baseline model is also disappointing too. Why Apple?
Same for mics array. I compared M2 Air recording to the one from iMac 5K and to the one from professional Rode microphone, and the M2 actually won. Which amazed me a lot.
It's so unfortunate to see all of these issues. This could've been one of the best and most praised laptops on the market just as the m1 air was. The form factor is so good but with those limitations, you better get an upgraded m1 air for the same price or even cheaper.
Thanks for the information! I think at this point everyone has managed to see the full and clear picture about the new MBA. For me personaly M1 Air is still the best machine money can buy at this price range and in most cases even beats the M2. Thanks for the honest review guys. Excellent job as always. Keep it up
Thank you for pointing out those problems and weaknesses. From my perspective, it seems like for most users, M1 would still be better for daily usage and multitasking on the go. M2 design is gorgeous, but it's probably the right choice only for those who prefer looks over performance. As someone else wrote there, maybe the internals is getting prepared for the m3 architecture, however, most of the problems seem like design flaws on purpose, specifically to push anyone who wants a high productivity machine to upsell for 14-inch pro.
Take a moment to apreciate this kind of work! Without reviews like this, we will be prone to mistakes, spending money on things without to know what we buy. They are probably the most meticulous reviewers with the most elaborate reviews on youtube right now. Thank you for helping us to save money, understand the technology better, to distinguish from many options, and choose the best!
I may be getting a new laptop for years 11 and 12, so hopefully the m3 air is out by then, and there aren’t many/any of these issues still floating around.
@@the_manchovie1795 Yeah, the GST, currency conversion and import tariffs make it quite a bit more expensive than prices people talk about in YT videos.
The price was also the same ($200 for RAM) until a couple days before July 15. Dont know why apple suddenly decided to give US customers a discount of $20.
i am a long term windows user, and i dont have any interest in macbook at all until apple decides to make their own chip, now i really wanted to try this out
Really unfortunate issues. This could have been a really special laptop. I can see this being an incredible laptop in a few years time when it becomes the entry level model. The form factor is something I really want but it’s probably too limiting for my needs.
I’m still inclined to choose the M2 over the M1 air because of the MagSafe charger. We get less and less ports nowadays that one extra USB C port becomes a huge deal 🥵
Exactly, ugh these manufacturers, purposely playing around with consumer feelings, lol. although M2 got great "new" features, but overheating is concerning point.
I want one. The only thing I’d wish is the better screen from the 14” and that the notch disappeared, I’d be more than happy to completely ditch the camera.
The new upgrades to the m2 air are honestly impressive even though the base models are messed up but the way they degraded the ssds worries me if apple will keep on degrading everything thats not on paper [like they did with ports and butterfly keyboard} every year so that people will consider upgrading to the next to be released macs
I feel that most of these are "things to consider" rather than problems. It's just a pitty that in order for someone to get the right version of their new M2 Air for their type of laptop use they will need to do so many hours of research online (hopefully on this channel!) and not trust what they might hear in the Apple store.
Thank you for making this video that is really detailed oriented and informative. In my opinion, I thought M2 would be much better, but i guess it seems like they are cutting cost to make it more profitable.
Apart from the SSD slower speeds on the base model I think that the rest of the problems are non existent. We are pushing the MacBook Air to the limit and just expecting that it performs as another more powerful model just because it has an amazing chip. This laptop is aimed to be slim, portable and silent and it’s amazing that amount of power we can get from it. Instead of putting a slower chip they went full power and just let the thermals decide the limitations. This is going to be a terrific machine for most users. Amazing product.
My 2010 laptop took a whole night to transfer a 20 GB folder , and MBA M2 does 114 gb in 6 minutes instead of 2 minutes, so it is not a big deal to me , i will be buying this M2 MacBook.
Thermal throttling is still an issue with the M2 having no heatsink/worse cooling solution than M1 version. The is even worse with the 10 core GPU version
@@evokaiyo 100% but we have seen the 16gb model does not make thermal throttling go up, it simply increases the snappiness of the device. Thermal throttling is a whole separate issue that needs to be solved but one of the issues is low ram for ability to cache, the other major one is ssd speeds. Increasing ram did in fact boost performance if you watched previous videos, and so did ssd speeds, and although performance can get even better with fixing thermal throttling, upgrading these two things alone already boosts the device to a whole new tier
I have an iPad pro 2018 needed a laptop ,have a fully specked desktop , but could not justify the price of buying a MacBook Air. I instead went for an Asus ZenBook 14. Every MacBook has its pros and cons but here the cons or problems of the M2 MacBook Air are mush more noticeable that makes it quite disappointing than what we’ve thought 💭 after the M1 MacBook launch. Thanks Max for letting us know about what’s going on with the new M2 MacBook Air.
I expected that a next gen SOC (M2) would improve significantly the performance of a computer but it seems it is not. I can't understand why Apple has built a base model with M2 that performs worse than the previous one.
Thank you for highlighting all the issues with the M2 MBA. It seems like even after paying more to upgrade to the higher options, some of the basic design issues (eg. heat, speakers etc) will still be quite disappointing.
Thank you. That was extremely helpful. Although a number of the disappointments you listed on the new Macbook Air M2 are hard to look past, the thermal issue was the deal breaker for me. I appreciate you guys being there.
The 128 gb base variant gives almost half the ssd performance (read/write speed) than 256gb/512gb/1tb variant. It uses single ssd, rather than two present in the higher variants. If you really want to buy the M2, definitely would recommend you not to go for the base variant. Instead shell some extra and go for 256 gb at least. Edit: Base storage is 256 gb, somehow i got confused, but the issue still persists.

Totally agree. We remember what happened to the iPhone X as well
Thanks for the clarification. This is one of the most hard decision making to purchase either M1 or M2 MacBook Air, especially the moment you love the new design, but there are points with you can't accept (especially the heat sink & SSD).
The 16GB and 512GB is definitely the way to go on the M2 Air, but at the price point it’s hard to justify going with Air over the 14”
Just picked up a 14” pro from Best Buy on sale for $1700. Only $100 more than the spec you reference. Check for deals on the pro. They’re out there!
That’s apple’s marketing

@@michaelsherman5678 They are bringing out a new one of those soon too. These computers are all way powerful enough already but avoiding upgradeitis is an always problem.
Just got a 10gpu, 24Gb, 1TB air. Costs $100 more than the base 14" M1. lol but I chose it for ultra portability while still having power.
Apple's marketing and reality have always been two very different things.
I decided to buy the M1 MBA when they announced that M2 Air starts at $1200. Well, now it looks like the perfect decision.
Never trust marketing, always watch a few reviews to get the full picture. That problem with the 10 core GPU is especially egregious.
Yes. Agreed.
There's no difference between marketing and "reviews".
@@derJackistweg exactly, i always watch 15-20 reviews minimum.
True💯💯💯
I never would have guessed the midnight color would have so many issues before watching. I really liked the look
I bought the m1 MBA a month before the M2 came out and I remember just feeling gutted that I spent money on an older gen product but as I’m watching videos and reading articles, I see that my M1 MBA is still great value in 2022.
I appreciate the honesty. The sound quality was quite different between the M1 and M2
Apple should’ve added a similar heatsink and the same nand storage to the M2 Air and it would’ve been praised just as much as the M1 Air.
apple is trash, their hobby is to foolish people with their marketing to get a huge profit
Also making ram upgrade cheaper would be nice. 8gb for $200 is basically robbery
I think this is an issue of an Uber liberal company pandering to their sheep audience which will be forced to buy their pro pro machines and get in line. Internal retail associates are severely unhappy with company culture and also splintered between how they sell these devices. FYI
Exactly...they're doing this shit on purpose it's insane..
Hey! Did you get the MacBook Air? If yes, how are you liking it?
I’m finally upgrading from a surface pro 3 and shopping around
@@dijahmedi4882I would also like to know. My GF's 2013 MacBook Pro has effectively died and she needs something new for school. I think she's going to need to get the 16gb 512ssd
I miss the times when we could do a lot of upgrades, such as SSD, RAM.
After all this reviews, i came out with one conclusion, the M1 macbook air still the best value for the price.
Apple failed to go with the MacBook air to the next level.
Thanks max tech.
true. m1 itself was a major leap. and now with that price diff….
Absolutely! Hard to justify the price difference in the face of some of these issues but all told it is still a great laptop.
I think M1 lineup was so good because Apple gave their all in order to prove their new silicon's capitilities and convince the consumers. Now that their goals have been achieved, they're starting to backtrack by giving us the bare minimum specs all over again.
😂😂😂
No matter what, me needing to upgrade from my macbook pro 2013 is a real problem. Having a device like the this macbook air m2 is a god send
I was deciding between M1 and M2, but after watching this video, I am sure that I did well with M1. Moreover, when the M2 cost €500 more in Europe.
True, just ordered mine M1 now.
I paid $960 for my m2 air.
@@alexsoe9955 how??
That heatsink/thermal pad mod actually has the potential to damage the battery due to the excess heat. I suspect that's why Apple didn't go that way.
Not at all. It's something spoken a lot in many forums.
If they didn't care about profits and listened to what people wanted, they would definitely beat out Microsoft in market share in the long run with apple silicon.
and we might have seen M2 Macs with removable RAM, storage and wireless card. And it allows to run Windows 10/11 ARM right when M1 released

I've been thinking of getting the M2 Macbook Air because of the design and new colour. But this review makes me want to try it even more. 😭
I second that. This guy obviously bought an M1 and now he is justifying it in his mind. I disagree with probably half of his conclusions.
m1 has a good price now, I have tried my brother's air m1 and it's still fast. Thank you guys
Really shock with the amount of problems that the new MacBook Air has 😓. I still love the midnight color and the new design, but it seems that the better choice is a M1 MacBook Air or the 14 inch MacBook Pro.
Kind of underwhelmed by the m2 air so far. But I really like the new design and the fact they brought back magsafe🤔
Honestly, if I had the money I would buy it. As a college student I should be fine with the M2 Air coming from a base model 2018 MacBook Air 128GB
"We're not trying to hate on this Macbook at all" ... goes on the point out all the flaws in multiple videos for the past week. 😂
There's no need to pull punches, if it isn't up to par then call Apple out on it.
Wow, after watching this video, I don’t think I’m going to buy the MacBook Air m2 anymore! Thank you for the informative video.
Excellent coverage on the transformation from M1 Air to M2. Still can't figure out why the engineering is missing performance.
This new MacBook air chassis was likely designed for the future 3nm chip and beyond. The thermals are too constrained for the overclocked and overpowered m2 chip
That's very interesting.. I didn't consider that.
That actually makes a lot of sense. It could explain why apple seems to be 'intentionally' restricting if perfomance
M2 is a placeholder unit. M3 is the jump from M1.
@@NorCal-refrigeration yes those were the rumors even before the release of the m2
Internal.. software or hardware?
just get one of these. I have the M1 MBA and now I have the M2 MBA, the MBA M2 performs faster than the M1 for sure. If you don't have the M1 and want to get a new MBA, just get the M2. you won't be disappointed.

I've only just begun to be a mac user so i try to watch all your videos and i'm very pleased with the work you do here. Keep up the good work.
You should try to make a comparison of the base model 8/256 and 16/256 for those ones who own external SSDs to see a difference of power and speed. Apple experts say more ram can make SSD faster and improves the performance of the chip cuz of the unification. Just suggesting
I agree
@@who_what
Yojansel Cuevas said "Apple experts say more ram can make SSD faster" that's simply not true.
I think I could live with all of these issues if it replaced my 2010 MPB; it really is starting to show its age.
Totally!
Just avoid the 256Gb base model if you can
Thanks for the information! I think at this point everyone has managed to see the full and clear picture about the new MBA. For me personaly M1 Air is still the best machine money can buy at this price range and in most cases even beats the M2. Thanks for the honest review guys. Excellent job as always. Keep it up
Quite glad to see the M1 isn’t just instantly left behind by the M2 and still is a very great bang for buck 💪🏼

I'm glad the M1 MBA is still a great machine. The M2 MBA design looks stunning!
I like the wedge shape much better. But OTOH, I want MagSafe.
Glad to see that my M1 mac from last year is still holding strong against the newest gen

Lol
Exactly, ugh these manufacturers, purposely playing around with consumer feelings, lol. although M2 got great "new" features, but overheating is concerning point.
It's sad that the M2 Air has turned out to be not as valuable as the M1. On the brighter side, I feel like my brother's M1 is less obsolete now.
I want one. The only thing I’d wish is the better screen from the 14” and that the notch disappeared, I’d be more than happy to completely ditch the camera.
Well, even the base model works for my use case. However, 16/512 GB is the best combination.
Really confused whether to upgrade or not..guess have to go with the cheaper M1 if performance is not as big...
U can buy higher ram or ssd varient instead of. Buying m2
The M1 is still the best for money. But the design M2 is amazing!
But everyone says that m1 model has a better keyboard
I've decided to take a chance on the Midnight Blue. Fingers crossed I don't regret it.
Do you regret it
I wonder if the advantages of a beautiful design are enough to convince customers to buy a more expensive basic version than the m1 🧐
Convinced me unfortunately. Now I regret it lmao
It’s hard to justify the price of the M2 when knowing how good the M1 was
WAS? its still there....its probably one of the most revolutionary laptops ever made.
I guess the main issues are the heat, SSD speed and of course the price on the M2 vs M1 macbook air!
I really wish they put the vent back, it would make it a great buy for much more people including myself
My 2010 laptop took a whole night to transfer a 20 GB folder , and MBA M2 does 114 gb in 6 minutes instead of 2 minutes, so it is not a big deal to me , i will be buying this M2 MacBook.
After watching this review, no one will go for the M2 MacBook air anymore just to have some single-core performance boost.
They should start offering 16gb as the base model! It would make the M2 clearly better than the M1
I can’t wait for mine to show up so I can see how well it performs for my daily tasks!
Thank you for highlighting all the issues with the M2 MBA. It seems like even after paying more to upgrade to the higher options, some of the basic design issues (eg. heat, speakers etc) will still be quite disappointing.
The lack of a proper heat sink on the M2 MBA crippled its capabilities. Well, that is intentional. Thanks Apple.
100 % agree. The M1 model was too good. Don’t make upgrades to the higher model, degrade the base model instead.
You should compare 8/512 and 16/256 gb model to see what is the difference between them
It doesn’t come with 128.
Although it does have some downsides, I would still love one of those new MBA! Keep up the great work guys!
I think that the M1 is still an amazing value laptop without most of the compromises the M2 has
