As a sound engineer, I can tell you the speakers sound much better. It's not about how loud a speaker sounds but the balance among low, mid, and high frequencies. Sadly not many people appreciate (or notice) this, but the engineering behind these speakers is insane!

No kidding. I bought a brand new 16/512/7c M1 Air in April for €1300 and I felt kinda bad knowing a new version would be out soon. But in retrospect it was the best possible option. This new device is gimped in every single aspect compared to the previous version. I can't believe that they have the audacity to ask for so much money for a series of gimped laptops that will most likely start dying in the next couple of years due to extreme thermal stress on the CPU.

Just as a warning, applying thermal pads will decrease cpu temps but will increase battery temps due to the case transferring some of that extra heat to the battery. This could and most likely will lead to faster battery degradation so apply at your own risk. If you absolutely need that bit of extra performance you probably should look into a pro. But for most everyday tasks the fanless m2 air will be completely fine

I had to turn in the maxed out 16" macbook pro I used for iOS/Android development when I got laid out, so I needed a decent temporary replacement below 2K to go freelance and training before getting into another corp again.
The two options were M2 Air and the M2 Pro , both with the same price, same specs: 512 SSD, 8Gb ram, 10 GPU cores.
I happily gave up the Pro´s "good speakers" and and went for the Air, and got a 1080p, 0.60 extra inches of screen, 200 grams less of weight in exchange. I don't care about the fan because I have a fan pad at home, and I don't care about fancy speakers because I pair the same Sennnheiser earbuds I use with my phone, and a Creative sound bar covers up at home.
M2 Air battery life is insane, tempereature is always cool, and it has the cool Midnight looks, no regrets.

The m2 is certainly a step backwards because it did not really live up to why people loved the m1 so much but it certainly is still a powerful machine I just hoped that this issues did not happen because it could have been easily fixed by apple through adding a proper heat sink and including 2 ssd nand chips on the base model.
