Man, the 8-bit remix of “Goonies R Good Enough” is still one of my favorite pieces of game music. It’s absolutely brilliant. (And this game absolutely kicked my butt as a kid. I do remember beating it, but WOW was it tricky.)
Played this game a lot when I was a kid, and beat it with the help of the official Nintendo Players' Guide. This is possibly due to the fact that you don't obtain the transceiver until after you rescue him (assuming you do things in relative order) Andie (identified in the video as Steff) is in the 2nd Ice area (i.e. the one without the boomerang and glasses), as indicated by her message saying "This is Andie. I'm freezing to death"; as well as when you rescue her, she says "Thank you, Mikey. You're braver than Brand" (Brand and Andie were dating in the movie, so Steff saying either of those things doesn't make any sense given where you find her in the game, and her not dating Brand). Brand (correctly mentioned in the video) is in the Green caverns. I forget exactly what his message is, but I recall it making a vague mention of the raincoat that you acquire in that area. Data (identified as Mouth in the video) is the male Goony you save in the underwater area, as indicated by his message "This is Data. Fishman stole my secret weapons" (a reference to the Jump Shoes you get from Fish Man). Steff (identified as Andie in the video) is the female Goony you find in the underwater area, as indicated by her message "This is Steff. A shark is attacking me." Finally, Chunk (identified as Data in the video) is in the Fire Cavern as indicated by his message "This is Chunk. It's close to eruption" or something to that effect (I sadly don't remember the exact line on Chunk's either). I'm not pointing this out to be a jerk or a know-it-all. Just for the sake of accuracy. The 'normal' way to go after you get the spring shoes is that you're supposed to backtrack all the way to the purple caverns and use the spring shoes to make the large jump. But since you get the ladder and spring shoes roughly at the same time, it becomes a bit open-ended on what you're supposed to do next. 1:23 PlayChoice-10 machines! I remember these in our local arcade back around 1989 or 1990. I actually played The Goonies 1 game from a PlayChoice-10 before ever playing Goonies 2, and I didn't see the film until I was much older, so as a kid, Goonies 2 seemed like a natural progression to me with superior gameplay over Goonies 1.
Great mention of the PlayChoice-10! I played one at the movie theater when I was a kid and thought they were so awesome as a kid. I had an NES at home, but there was something magical about them. I purchased a broken one last year and got it working! It's a solid collector's item. Mine is the two-monitor one that had the same cabinet/setup at Punchout!.
My best friend and I beat this game with "The Official Nintendo Players Guide" so we had an edge in knowing that you had to beat a little old lady 5 times to take her candle. I am amazed you got through this one on your own, Nice work and always a nice video. Being hesitant to beat the hell out of old people for candles is a sign of good moral character. :P
Dunno if it was intentional, but I've always loved that they included the gushes of waterfall in the red caves, which is a nod to a cut scene from the film. When Mikey & Data are trying to cross the boat mast, the tide water rushes in and almost knocks them onto the spikes below. That bit was removed in the final film, and we only see the water gush over the Fratellis.
This Game is 1 of my Favorites. And the Nintendo 10 Cabinets are Straight up Coin Guzzling Machines, there were loads of those Down at the Jersey Shore Boardwalk back in the day.
This, not The Goonies film itself, was my first experience with the franchise, and I instantly fell in love with it (it made recognizing the tune from "Goonies R Good Enough" that much cooler when I did see the movie). I've played through and beaten it at least two or three times. For a movie-licensed NES game, it was pretty good-sized for the time and had some great tunes.
IIRC the broad-strokes of the story for Goonies 2 was based on a script for the unmade sequel to the Goonies movie, and that's where Annie the Mermaid came from.
Totally remember playing this at the arcade (the first one). I don't know why it was so fun playing it back then but I loved it. Nintendo should've had achievements. No kid would've figured this out for the most part. PS Chunk is a Hollywood lawyer now I believe 👍
The thing about this game is that I almost gave up on it: the rooms were tough for me, since I didn't see the point in them until I looked up info on them and hitting anything with everything. Then I learned to manage it. Finished this game to the point I could get all the Items, Goonies most of the Bombs and Molotov Cocktails (this game taught me what was a Molotov Cocktail, LOL) and rescue Annie in one go. 3 hours, give or take, if I remember correctlyy.
Not bad! I kinda wish the instruction manual gave some clues about how to navigate those rooms, I spent many hours punching the side walls for no reason!
That was the only way I managed to beat this game- literally hitting EVERYTHING in the rooms. (Including the people lol. I totally screwed myself out of KonamiMan’s assistance though!) I remember drawing a map for this one too… AHHH. Such nostalgia.
If you look at the deleted scenes on the movie, it had an octopus in the cave and I think they were trying to introduce the water/mermaid scenario but it all got scraped
Your video helped me complete this game for the first time. I was five years old when I was lucky enough to get this on the NES. My oldest son is now five, so maybe it'll be another 35 years before he beats it 😀 All the best, and thanks for such a great video!
My name is Josh I love your TH-cam channel I watch it every morning please keep up the good work I love your I'm a retro gamer too so I can use all the help I can get beaten NES games thank you
Thank you so much for the kind words. I definitely agree about there being so many great games to play! I really like some newer games, especially ones that are made to appeal to fans of the older stuff like Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon, but in the end, I don't have a lot of time to play them all.
This video made me sub! Legendary quality to your work! I grew up with the Goonies 2, loved it, still love it, and even programmed a TAS for it. Currently looking for what to binge next of yours! 😁👍👍

Remember playing this game when I was a kid, could never find the last of the Goonies to set free. Oddly enough at the time I actually though that this game was for a real Goonies 2.
First game I've got with my NES (except for Mario/Duck Hunt of course! Took me over a year to actually finish it... Like going through a couple games like Zelda I & II, Metroid, Simon's Quest, etc to harden me up as a gamer before going back to it... English not being my first language didn't help either hahah! I remember having my mom calling up a bunch of theaters to figure out what was up with the Goonies II movie,... Was it released? Did we miss it? I guess it created more confusion than anything else for these theaters' service folks hahhha! Good times in the 80's :P
Idk if Rygar came out before or after this game, but I’m pretty sure it was in 87’ and you technically use a yo-yo in that game. Definitely I remember a game that was in arcades called The Electric Yo-yo and I’m pretty sure it came out around 82’ so there’s at least one definite game with a yo-yo weapon before The Goonies 2 if you don’t count Rygar! :D
I played Goonies II a long time ago on the famicom so it's in japanese. Managed to finish it even though I don't know japanese. That's how much I love this game. Now I can finally read the english version.
When I played this I always thought there was a goonies movie sequel I never knew about. I wasn't a big movie person so I never put two and two together or made an effort to ask, I just assumed there was a second movie that I never heard about.
This is one of those games I never played back in the day, and got to play it after the emulation era. Always wanted to play it but couldn’t find it on rental stores and never met someone who had the game. I had the Goonies 1 though, it was included in my pirate nes clone console that had hundreds of game in memory (including contra, Antarctic adventure, etc), but my first encounter with the franchise was with the movie, which I love!!! Watched it in the cinema back in the day, and was amazed with the Atari 800 game of the Goonies. Although the Atari game is very short, a video around that game would be very fun to watch with your style. Great content!!
Hey Man you are doing great work. I use to play all these games when I was a kid. Even if I beat the game I learn something new and learn the history of the game. You explain what you’re doing so well I don’t even have to play the game😂 I wish you only success.
My brother and I played the heck out of this game. We spent too many days replaying it trying to find the stupid candle, despite having beaten the game numerous times just guessing around in the dark rooms. As an adult seeing the solution to the hidden candle, I feel like a pretty pissed off six year old all over again.
I used to rent this game from the local video store. I thought Japan may have been ahead of us in movies. The soundtrack has been in my head since 1990 but could never get far till I was in my 20s. I actually beat it for the first time when I was 30. I enjoy your material.
Another handy tip for this game in the icy areas if you duck you stop yourself immediately and lock your position, handy for spots you might get surprised on.
Well done sir! And thank you for asking why we never got a proper Goonies 1 port here in the states! I always felt this sequel was slightly inferior to the original, albeit not by much. I will always have fond memories of this one, the only game ever where you smacked an old woman for a candle.
I bought this at a Child World back when it was first released. You had to ask for the game at the electronics counter/window to purchase the games. The very snarky worker who seemed very happy talking down to children informed me when I asked for "Goonies 2" that it was just "the Goonies". I insisted that it was Goonies 2 because there was a roman numeral 2 right in the title. He said they were just bones and it couldn't be "Goonies 2" since there was no Goonies 1 game and there is no Goonies 2 film. I mean he was kid of right but my notion of how kids can be smarter than adults sometimes started with that exchange.
Think this might be the oldest game with a yoyo weapon. The only other game featuring a Yoyo I can think of older is a 1982 arcade game called Electric Yoyo but you are the Yoyo in that game.
Thanks for making this play through video. It brought back a lot of childhood memories. This game was a classic example of games of its time when there were so many hidden items and passage ways that would have been impossible to find or figure out if it were not for Nintendo Power. The only way I got through this game was with the help of NP. I found that once I finished the game for the first time, I never cared to play it through again. It didn't have enough replay value for me then and it doesn't now. One of the most frustrating parts about the game was just dealing with all the enemies on the screen. The weapons were often inadequate to handle many of the enemies. As a kid, we would always try to defeat all enemies in our way. But as an adult, we can see that it's just easier to take the hit and keep on moving. When I first played Ninja Gaiden for the NES, it really reminded me of Goonies II in the sense that all these enemies would suddenly appear and your character was ill-equipped to handle all of them. I also never had the patience when in the rooms to be hitting every wall, floor, or celing with the fist or hammer, then also trying out the goggles just to locate hidden items or doorways. I remember that I only bought this game because it was made by Konami, which had made some fantastic games earlier that I really enjoyed like Gradius and Castlevania. I recall that I regretted buying it and felt disappointed in Konami. It was nice to watch the play through, especially when I didn't have to do any of the work. :) But I won't be rushing out to dust off my old NES and popping this game in.
I beat this game 1.5 times previously... ...I went to Annie without all 6 Goonies and uh... yeah, the game will not let you through. ...I also didn't have most of the items; just the ones needed minimally to get there and it was not easy. Either way, this one is a secret gem for me to play. EDIT: No, I did NOT ever use a guide for this game. Yes, I didn't know about the candle. I just got into the habit of rooms where I'd test everything, even when I couldn't see anything.
I definitely got pretty deep into the game as a kid without the candle, but its so easy to get lost without knowing where the doors are. At least they didn't hide something completely mandatory that way.
I got this game when it was still in stores back in the day. Took me forever to beat it, given the only hints at the time were in Nintendo Power magazine.
Totally called Nintendo Power. They told me the reason I couldn't play Iron Tank with 2 players was because the box art and instructions were misprints. My parents never let me call again.
You know what? I don't even question why a mermaid. Mermaids on NES games were always so dang cute for some reason. The screenshot of the one in this game was almost reason enough to get me to buy this game as a kid lel
IIRC, the Eskimo was based on a Japanese joke from Hitoshi Ueki in the 1960s. "You didn't call for me? Oops! My mistake!" Basically, he walked onto stage for a joke at the wrong time, realized that he had messed up, went "Oh, you didn't call for me? Oops. My mistake!" and ran off. The audience laughed so much that it became a running joke from then on. Yes, EXACTLY like Bart Simpson's "I didn't do it!"
My 7 year old self has an appreciation/jealous streak for you, These are some of the hardest video games I never could finish! Thank you for "The Goonies II" as well as "Metal Gear" "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" and all of these other great games you've helped me to learn to beat, FINALLY after all these years! Super appreciation! Been subbed for a bit, wish I could sub twice or like all the vids twice. (So well done, even considering putting you on a white-list for the ads so you can get some revenue. I don't HAVE a whitelist, so you'd be the first [and only] one on it.) Keep going through all the retro video games and just play throughout all the games and show us how to beat them all. I love the fact you take damage, you're not a BOT but you are that good. Kudos! Take care and please CONTINUE!
My understanding was that there was a Goonies 2 movie in production at the time, and Konami, having the rights, started making the game for the sequel, hoping to release it at the same time as the movie- according to what I read, some of the elements of the game were based on early drafts of the script. However, the movie ended up in development hell and went nowhere, and Konami, about to lose the license due to time limits, published the game anyways.
Pretty sure it was a deal to help promote the PC-10 system, with the first one. I remember playing it a lot back then. I'm pretty sure that the 2nd one was already developed and released in Japan by that time, and that's why they chose to release that one and skip over the original. Happened a lot back then, as US releases were frequently years behind the Japanese releases until you got to the 16-bit era.
I found an older game where you fight with a yo-yo, it's a 1984 BBC Micro game called Frak. I was very surprised to discover it, not only because it's a very early game with a yo-yo weapon, it's also a cartoony two-way scrolling platformer that's even older than Pac-Land.
Played this a lot when I was kid 😊 I remember once when I killed a penguin in the ice world I got an extra life (1-up). Never managed to repeat that feat. Did some searching online about this and found a guide where it says that the 1-up in the game is a rare item that can only appear 1 time - ever
Wow, that's impressive! I remember the day the Children's Palace in my area went out of business. Games were like 40% off, and I had to get surgery that was going to have me out of school for a few days, so my mom said I could get one. I had really wanted Dragon Warrior 3, but it was extra expensive (like $60) so normally there was no way I was getting it, but at 40% off, it was approved!
I loved children's palace so much.still to this day it was my favorite place on earth.I didnt know children's palace was a nation wide toy store.I thought it was just a local toy store here in Memphis. The old building is still here but its a tire shop now but u can still see the original design of the castle
As I recall, you don’t need to find any secret doors to beat the game. There are two types, those that are invisible and those that are revealed with bombs. The invisible ones generally have Konami Man and his energy refill. The bombable ones have a character that give extra lives, with the major exception being early hyper-shoes at the suspension bridge but man early hyper-shoes are so worth it.
I find myself watching whole videos even if I never played the particular game. That my friend is good work. We need to blow up your subs.

If anyone is able to slip "Encino Man" into a video game review, it's you.
Well done.
🤣 I was pretty surprised by how many of the Goonies are in Encino Man!
I totally screwed myself out of KonamiMan’s assistance though!)
I remember drawing a map for this one too… AHHH. Such nostalgia.
If you look at the deleted scenes on the movie, it had an octopus in the cave and I think they were trying to introduce the water/mermaid scenario but it all got scraped
From what I see Annie is to pay tribute to mama Fratelli, interesting
This game scared me as a kid, particularly the first person views when you enter a room.
I beat this as an 8 year old. My sister's intuition helped finding hidden doors, though. Proud of myself.
Sending good vibe comments to help with the algorithm. Keep up the great work!
Your video helped me complete this game for the first time. I was five years old when I was lucky enough to get this on the NES. My oldest son is now five, so maybe it'll be another 35 years before he beats it 😀 All the best, and thanks for such a great video!
My name is Josh I love your TH-cam channel I watch it every morning please keep up the good work I love your I'm a retro gamer too so I can use all the help I can get beaten NES games thank you
Good to read such a great actor! But I have to say that Mickey is braver than you 😢
Love this game and think I have 2 of them. So many games in the world and so little time to play them. I do love a challenge tho. Great video!
Thank you so much for the kind words. I definitely agree about there being so many great games to play! I really like some newer games, especially ones that are made to appeal to fans of the older stuff like Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon, but in the end, I don't have a lot of time to play them all.
Love to see your # of subs keep increasing. I rarely subscribe to channels but I was happy to add your channel to my list!
Thank you for your tutorial. Your directions are simple and concise. You Rock!!!
This video made me sub! Legendary quality to your work! I grew up with the Goonies 2, loved it, still love it, and even programmed a TAS for it. Currently looking for what to binge next of yours!
😁👍👍
This brought back a lot of good memories. This was my favorite game when I was a kid
This game will always mean so much. i just realized this goonies was the game my mom and i played all day together when i was at home sick back in 88... i swear im not a soft guy, but it brings tears to my eyes cause it means so much now that my mom would do that with me...thanks, mom i love you always.. it took he 48 min .. when u dont know anything but gotta somehow find it out youll be playing hours and hours
Remember playing this game when I was a kid, could never find the last of the Goonies to set free. Oddly enough at the time I actually though that this game was for a real Goonies 2.
Still have my original nes cartridge of goonies 2..one my personal top 20 all time Nes games. Fantastic walk through 👌
First game I've got with my NES (except for Mario/Duck Hunt of course!
18:43 I used to call that the lima bean cave when I would play this as a youth.
I played Goonies II a long time ago on the famicom so it's in japanese. Managed to finish it even though I don't know japanese. That's how much I love this game. Now I can finally read the english version.
I enjoyed this game immensely as a child! Nice to see a great walkthrough for it
I really enjoyed watching this. G2 was one of my favorite games as a kid
Thanks so much, Max! I always hope to show some fun and interesting stuff - glad you're enjoying it!
I remember passing the game at the age of 9 at 1997. >:) I still playing it and i love the sound track.
Did you know that level 1 theme song is a Cyndi Lauper song called Good Enough?
My brother and I played the heck out of this game. We spent too many days replaying it trying to find the stupid candle, despite having beaten the game numerous times just guessing around in the dark rooms. As an adult seeing the solution to the hidden candle, I feel like a pretty pissed off six year old all over again.
That candle thing is ridiculous. Why, Konami?!?
Thanks for watching!
I used to rent this game from the local video store. I thought Japan may have been ahead of us in movies. The soundtrack has been in my head since 1990 but could never get far till I was in my 20s. I actually beat it for the first time when I was 30. I enjoy your material.
If I ever need a candle I know exactly what to do!
Just followed along and beat the game, first time in 20+ years! Such fun, thanks!
Love the content! Glad to have finally found ya!
Thanks! I'm glad you found me, too!
This is by far my new favorite channel. Keep 'em coming.
Another handy tip for this game in the icy areas if you duck you stop yourself immediately and lock your position, handy for spots you might get surprised on.
That's actually a really good tip! Thanks!
Didn't notice this before, but one of the BGMs was a midi version of Cyndi Lauper's "The Goonies R Good Enough", which premiered in the movie.
8 year old me had zero chance of beating this game. So many unfair hidden items and pathways. Had a blast watching you play though bud!
Epilogue: the goonies paid their rent debt by selling Annie to a tuna fish company. HAPPY END! THANK YOU FOR PLAYING!
The NES game Star trumpets had a yo-yo for a weapon this josh
I just finished this game thanks to you. I tried to make it through this game when I was a kid but never made it. Thank you!
You already said thank you once. Don't jinx it, man.
Well said! 👍
I found it at a garage sale and it took me and my brother two weeks to beat. I enjoyed most of that time.
It has its flaws, but overall all its a pretty good one! Thanks for watching!
I love your Golden ❤️ as much or more than the actual videos!
My parents never let me call again.
lol aw man, double bummer
I did not know iron tank had a misprint 😅
You know what? I don't even question why a mermaid. Mermaids on NES games were always so dang cute for some reason. The screenshot of the one in this game was almost reason enough to get me to buy this game as a kid lel
True story, that mermaid is really cute.
Thank You for this, I've always wanted to beat this game!!!!
Also, could you do a video on Ultima: Quest Of The Avatar and Dragon Warrior?
IIRC, the Eskimo was based on a Japanese joke from Hitoshi Ueki in the 1960s. "You didn't call for me? Oops! My mistake!" Basically, he walked onto stage for a joke at the wrong time, realized that he had messed up, went "Oh, you didn't call for me? Oops. My mistake!" and ran off. The audience laughed so much that it became a running joke from then on.
Yes, EXACTLY like Bart Simpson's "I didn't do it!"
I owned this game and played through it many times. And I never knew you could down or angle-throw the boomerang like that
My 7 year old self has an appreciation/jealous streak for you, These are some of the hardest video games I never could finish!
Amazing video and amazing game !!
Okay this one has me wanting to ask for a Dr Chaos video ;) the room searching reminded me of it.
Love the raising hope reference! Love love love that show
I knew there had to be some other Raising Hope fans out there!
I was never able to beat this game way back when I was a kid, it was a lot of fun though
I remember playing this game as a kid, I could not figure out how to play it. I gave up on it.
This is honestly one of my favorite adventure games on the NES, love the music alone :P
This game always looked so cool but I didn't have it and it seems to have a learning curve to get started
I found an older game where you fight with a yo-yo, it's a 1984 BBC Micro game called Frak. I was very surprised to discover it, not only because it's a very early game with a yo-yo weapon, it's also a cartoony two-way scrolling platformer that's even older than Pac-Land.
Great guide! I played this game a lot as a kid and I kinda enjoyed it, but some of the more obscure puzzles left me unable to finish it all.
You need 100,000 more subs. Such a great channel.
I didnt even know this game existed! I gotta find this on my emulator. Great video!
Thanks! Shouldnt be too hard to find a ROM for this
@@UCanBeatVideoGames but you said in the video I can only play it if I found an original cart!
@@leonidas6682 🤣 That's the only way to play an official version, but of course there are other ways
You forgot to mention "Yo Noid!". The Noid himself attacks with a yo yo.
He totally does!
Played this a lot when I was kid 😊 I remember once when I killed a penguin in the ice world I got an extra life (1-up). Never managed to repeat that feat. Did some searching online about this and found a guide where it says that the 1-up in the game is a rare item that can only appear 1 time - ever
Its good to see someone complete a game i totally sucked at as a child 😆. Well explained walkthrough
Saved my $, bought this from children’s palace, popped it in and used my Nintendo power and beat it in 24 hours. Great memories !
