  • This is the proper way of replacing a cracked LCD screen and/or LVDS Cable on a Macbook Pro A1278. This video is long, but outlines all of the steps you need to take to make this replacement. This job will take about an hour to do completely from start to finish, and it does require some patience and finesse.

    I made a stupid mistake trying to sort out my hinges. I broke the LVDS cable. What to do?? Used screens in decent nick with an attached cable are indecently expensive. And yet I was really bummed at the thought of installing a new cable. After watching your video, I ordered a new cable (and some new hinges). I just hope that I can be good enough not to bust the glass. This is a good, well-modulated instructional. I'm so glad that you did not clutter it with all the chit-chat, rubbish and drool that so many presenters indulge in on TH-cam. Thanks!

    computer turns on, chimes, reset PRAM and SMC did not work. Black screen but backlit still. Took back off and where logic board and LVDS cable plugs in just wiped it with my fingers and re-assembled, BAM! Screen started working again. Saved me mega-bucks on a replacement screen. 2015 macbook "12, 1" by the way

  • @chuffpup

    A simple fix for the backlight problem, if your fuse is blown, is to first test the fuse with the battery unplugged(it's the tiny thing with a p on top, next to the monitor plug) you will need a magnifying glass for this job. If it's testing as dead, no power going through, you can very carefully solder a tiny little strand of wire and I mean tiny, across the fuse, you can solder it on as a long piece and snip it later. This is a bodgy repair, but may save you needing to buy a fuse. If it doesn't work don't blame me. It worked for me.

    Thank you for this in depth video! I do have a question.. if anybody could help with an answer. So the laptop I’m fixing got hit by a car. the outer glass is cracked (a lot), and I am pretty sure the LDVS cable is damaged. But how could I tell if the inner LCD screen should be replaced as well? the computer still turns on. the only display problem has been the backlight flickering in and out, and of course all the cracks on the outer screen. I ask so I can buy all the parts needed in one go. Thanks again!

      Screen won't survive that at all. U may have to buy the whole display assembly and it might work if you are not too screwed

    Hi my friend, is this MacBook Pro A1278 the same as a MacBook Pro 13 inch mid 2012?
    My LVDS is broken and a store wants to charge me over $200 for the fix by using a heat gun to take off the screen...it looks like by your video you just unscrew a few screws and it comes off easily and then you can attach the new LVDS cable. By the looks of your video it seems I could do the fix myself by purchasing a LVDS online and replacing it myself. I’ve fixed things in my macbook before so I have an idea of how to do it.
    Hope to hear from you.

      He skipped showing the difficult part...you first have to remove the glass (which he says he always cracks in the process), then you have to do all of the steps in this video. If you can remove the glass, do what is in this video, then replace the glass, you can replace the cable.

      If you are replacing the LVDS cable only, is the adhesive from the original screen enough to keep it glued together? Or do I need to apply a new adhesive or use VHB tape?

    Thanks for this video; I would warn people that are not computer technicians to place safe, specially on minute 4, 10 secs, he said that there is this connector that is tricky and he advises to use two screw drivers and to wiggle it; I spent about 45 min trying to figure out how to disconnect and I still could not figure it out; the video does not show how he disconnects it because his fingers get in the middle; it would help a lot to have a close up of the disconnected “plug” and a close up of the motherboard to better understand how this is plugged into the mother board. My advise is don’t mess too much w it because this connectors are supper delicate and you can easily damage the connector and/or the mother board w the two small screwdrivers. At this point it would be better to pay for the replacement by a experienced technician.

      Lol there are 2 cables there one you just straight out, and one you pull upwards. Yes knowing how which wires come off is a puzzle that only the guys at apple would know why they did it but once you know it it's fine.

      @nickgameplyr2613 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh man, I feel like an idiot now! Wish I'd read this first! I did it with a AutoZone rewards card and hair dryer. No cracks no trouble. Just never ever put any kind of lever against the screen though.
      To use WD-40 you would first disconnect the battery, and then spray WD-40 so it seeps under the bezel and gets at the adhesive. Tilt it so it gets all up in there. It should come apart pretty easy once the glue gets a bit oily. Then before reassembly, clean the surfaces with alcohol wipes, or alcohol and a paper towel, until it's not slippery.

    Does anyone know if you have to remove the glass in order to replace the motherboard/screen cable? There is nothing wrong with my screen/glass but it flickers when opening the lid so I'm pretty sure it is a cable problem. Based on the video it appears that you have to remove the glass, and likely it will break.

      @@rajanikantmetri423 I managed to replace the cable without breaking the glass and put it back together and it seems to have fixed the problem. Honestly I don’t remember a lot of other details but I still have the computer and it works just fine now. You might consider buying the glass and a cable if it’s not a lot of money and replacing all of it at the same time.

    Bro, i dont usually leave bad comments on videos, especially helpful ones like these. BUT, if you "highly recommend" that we should disconnect the battery first , why did you wait so long into the process to tell us that?! You could have easily edited that part of the video and put it right before the part where we started messing around with all the wires and stuff. Now my backlight is out on my screen and im assuming that ive shorted a fuse just like you did in this video. Where is the video of where you explain how to fix the backlight issue, you should have linked that in the description.
