🎥 IN THIS EPISODE → We had a wonderful time on our 11 day Crown Princess Alaskan inside passage cruise (June 2023). But I have to say it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows! LITERALLY! We were so excited to experience Alaska. Needless to say it did not go exactly as planned!

We took an 11 day cruise to Alaska in 2005 and it just made us crave to see more of it. So in 2019 we drove! When we went, the roads were fine as we pulled our 5th wheel. We were in no hurry to get there and so we often said, “We’re just meandering our way to Alaska.” We saw so much wildlife along the Alaska Highway….bears, moose, eagles, mountain goats and bison. We LOVED Valdez and spent 2 weeks there! And then another 3 weeks in the Homer area. We took two nature cruises and saw orcas and humpback whales, seals, puffins and eagles.

This is exactly how it shouldn't be done! I grew up in Anchorage and just watching this reminded me how NOT to visit. As a teenager we always made fun of the tourists. LOL I love that cruises pump $ into the port economy, but it really isn't the best way to visit such a wonderful place.

Hello! A few weeks ago, I watched Chad n Tara's video on the cruise to Alaska and wanted to hear your take on it. I get the impression it was a bit of a disappointment for all but you made the absolute best of it. We lived in Alaska for seven years and will always treasure the memories💓🐳🐋🐻 🦅🐾🦔

We took a Holland America cruise on the Volendam out of Vancouver, B.C. to Alaska and back for our 35th anniversary in 2014. We splurged, upgrading to first class on United Airlines round trip from Tampa, and upgraded to the Neptune suites on the ship. We only had bad weather at one stop, in Ketchikan. Glacier Bay National Park was amazing.
The Neptune suites are amazing: twice the width of a normal veranda suite, with a double wide balcony, access to the Neptune lounge, private concierge, free laundry, all day coffee, tea, juice, fruits and cheeses, etc.
We arrived in Vancouver two days before the cruise and flew home two days afterwards. Stayed at the Pan Pacific Hotel.
    Great vacation.

Visiting Alaska is a good dose of reality, not always a bowl of cherries. I lived 10 years in Fairbanks and 5 in Anchorage, with many opportunities to charter out to the villages for work. It's an exceptionally beautiful state, with good people who will rescue you from a life-threatening situation in a heartbeat.

Road, train, small charters and planes into small places are a must do, once you've got the basics done.

An Alaskan cruise is all about timing. We did the Royal Caribbean Southbound itinerary in early August with friends and the weather was amazing! Only one day of rain the entire trip! No excursions were cancelled, we saw 27 whales in total, went right up the Hubbard Glacier, and the highlight for us was taking a beautiful train ride on the White Pass/Yukon Narrow Gauge Railway from Canada to Skagway, AK! This is not a flex, but it’s all about choosing the right dates for an Alaskan cruise, but course, there can never be a guarantee on the weather in Alaska…

As an Alaskan resident of 27 years, I’m always bummed when travelers here don’t get to experience the full extent of the wonders WE know are here.
Heck, I can see towering mountain peaks and ice fields by driving 10 minutes from home … but on a rainy day, I may as well live in MN. 🤷🏼‍♀️ But give it a few days (which you can do in your RV) and the view can switch dramatically!
Whether it’s the weather or marine/wildlife not cooperating; it’s truly sad when a once in a lifetime trip doesn’t perform as hoped.
Definitely come up in your RV! Plan plenty of time, and keep as much time as possible flexible. I love traveling all over AK by RV and, unless I’m heading to a specific event, I’ve been known to pack up, then check my weather app for a 5-10 day forecast before deciding whether I’m heading to Valdez, Seward, Homer or elsewhere. Follow the sunshine!
Airplane or helicopter flight-seeing trips are equally spectacular whether your take a Denali flight out of Talkeetna, a Glacier-viewing (with possible landings!) flight out of Valdez, or bear-viewing flights out of Homer.
Marine wildlife boat cruises are stellar out of Valdez and Seward, and the fishing is great just about anywhere along the Kenai Peninsula. Hope you come up soon - and be prepared to see the REAL Alaska. 🐋🦑🐬🦀🦅🫎🦦

Great video, guys. Got a two-fer, my favorite two channels together.
It's a shame you got rained out on your excursion, but that's Alaska.
That is one of my favorite places to go. No matter how many times you go, you can't wait to get back. If I'd known about Alaska 45 years ago, that's where I'd be now. Too old to move there, but i can travel there.
It seems like ya'll enjoyed yourselves anyway. Thanks so much for taking us along with you. Cant wait to see part two.
God bless ya'll and stay safe out there on your trip.

Having been to Alaska twice, driving both times, there truly is SO much more to inland to see, albeit having been to Skagway, Valdez, Anchorage, Fairbanks, Homer and more, along with having your own bed with you each night, some of the sights are phenomenal. Seaward, when we where there, was the first time I've felt an earthquake, as we got a good shake...and it was all over, and the glaciers around the area are just so wonderful to see, and walk up to. Chena Hot Springs is worth the drive, as all electrical/heat is from Geothermal, and all the meat for their restaurant they harvest from the animals around the site. I still remember tomato plants with limbs the size of a mans arm, going straight to the roof of the greenhouses, and the hot-springs aren't bad either, nor the campsite there.

I went on an Alaska cruise at the beginning of October. It was AMAZING. But our day in Glacier bay looked like your day in Juneau- all day freezing rain, crazy wind, and tons of fog. So the park was not as beautiful as it could have been. I had two different Mendenhall Glacier excursions cancelled, one just a bus tour, the other a canoe tour. Finally I just walked off the ship and booked whale watching, it was more expensive, but it was a nice day out AND we saw the glacier! Our whether in Ketchikan couldn't have been better, and our weather in Skagway was drizzly but nice. We had one day of really really rough seas, and a lot of sick people on the boat, but I love the days where the ship is tossing. Because of the season, we didn't see much wildlife (no bears, only a few whales, only 1 eagle all week; did see a fox), but I expected that. I would go again in October just because it cost half of the summer!

I lived in Haines, Alaska for many years and have been up and down the inside passage more times than I can count. Depending on the time of year, on some trips you see whales (mostly humpbacks and some orcas) at almost every turn. At other times of the year you will see nothing from Seattle to Skagway. One thing you can always count on, is rain, rain, and more rain. I always look at it like this: If it didn’t rain so much, it wouldn’t be all green and pretty, right? It’s all part of the experience. So, the next time you go, the clouds will be covering (and uncovering) new things that you didn’t see on your last trip. So, you now have something to look forward to! Here’s two Alaskan facts that nobody ever considers before heading up there: #1 - Ketchikan receives on average between 140 and 160 inches of rain per year. And, #2 - Only about 10% of tourists that visit Mt. McKinley are actually able to see it. So, don’t feel bad - Just keep coming back! 😉

Tip: Get a cabin at the back of the ship, it's a sun trap. We sat in shorts and tee-shirts as we sailed up Glacier Bay while everyone on the top deck was wrapped up for the chilling wind that blows down the bay.

We really enjoyed your video of your Alaska cruise. We just got back from a 85 day RV trip there with two other couples. You guys should really take your RV there. You can see so much more and take your time. It was the most incredible trip we have ever taken. It was neat seeing some of the places that we have just been. We actually had a different view from what you had. We would enjoy a cruise as well, but watching your video we realized how blessed we were to have more time in each town and to see it when there weren’t as many people around. Several of the towns we visited we saw cruise ships come in and people getting off. We actually stayed at campgrounds in several towns where we could watch the cruise ships. Again, I’d like to say you guys really should do an RV trip there. You not regret it! 😊

Love Alaska. When I was a teenager I would ride the ferry to Juneau to stay with my dad for the summer. No going to tell those stories on here anyway.
My wife and I took a Cruise from Vancouver up to Glacier Bay and back. That was a great trip. We usually fly up now. To Anchorage then take off from there. Either North for a week or south for a week depends on what we are doing.
Lately though we have been in Italy for the past year traveling around Europe. Just made it back from a Cruise from Bari North to Venice then south to Crete. Was a good time but I would rather go to Alaska.

Just got off Holland Westerdam, had an amazing time. Ship not as big or pretty as Princess yet we enjoyed small ship & traditional cruising. MDR food was terrific & loved our room. The highlight was off our balcony on last day sailing from Ketchikan to Victoria BC saw too many to count whales! One came up close to us and rolled over! It was for us a cruise of a lifetime!

You just never know about the weather. We cruised Alaska several years ago in mid August - had gorgeous weather. We cruised Alaska again in mid-August 2023 and had 10 days of rain and fog! We still had a great time. We took our good raincoats and just got out there. The fog is always moving, lifting then dropping down again. You have to make up your mind to enjoy yourselves 😊 We saw lots of whales from Icy Straight Point and had good weather for our train trip from Skagway to the Yukon - best excursion of our whole trip. Great celebration of 45 years of marriage. We were actually on the same ship - lots of fun!

I was on that train and it had very steep banks beside it. I gave my seat (close to the edge) over to a couple who were avid photographers.

A friend won an Alaskan cruise and invited me. I had only done eastern and western Caribbean cruises up until then. When you get on the boat in Miami there is an awesome vibe. When you get on the boat in Seattle it's like walking into a funeral or wake. Zero energy. Also, the excursions are at least triple the cost of the ones in the Caribbean. The views are beautiful, but I'd rather look at a picture of the mountains while on a warm water cruise.

1st welcome to Bring Cash and a lot of it. That's what us who live in B C call it. If you went on the train in Skagway, you got there early and sat on the left side looking forward. With us living near Vancouver it's a quick somewhat cheap week if you don't go nuts. Our first trip was 20 years ago. When looking at Hubbard, the left it closes off and builds water behind until the pressure is to much and blows a huge piece of Hubbard into the bay.

We did a Holand America 18 day sea and land trip out of Vancouver this summer. It was fantastic with great weather, awesome animal sightings, epic experiences. 7 night cruise out of Vancouver to Whittier then train to Anchorage, train to Denali, bus to Fairbanks, charter plane to Dawson City, charter plane to Whitehorse and plane to Vancouver. A whole bunch of exertions along the way. We would recommend any Holand America Alaska trip. This was our second, and the next trip to Alaska will be in our motorhome.

Wow! Can I ask who you booked this through? Were the accommodations good at every city? Was the train safe and fast? Did you experience this trip as novices or have you broken trips into legs like this before? Would you recommend for first time cruisers? And a couple looking for the trip of a 50 year lifetime together?

So beautiful. I’ll be on the Discovery Princess at the end of May 2024. Unfortunately we have to go in May as my two college kids are going, and that’s the only time they can go due to both taking summer school classes next summer. I already know it’s going to be cold and rainy in Alaska but that’s okay. I’m sure we’ll enjoy the experience regardless, and I’m taking my mother-in-law along for the adventure as well. She’s never been on a cruise and is so excited to go with us. Great video.

I was in Alaska late Aug/early Sept this year, I went on my own, not on a cruise. Quick tip, if you have a day in Juneau and want to go to Mendenhall Glacier, taking the City Bus is what I did. Walk to the left up the pier and the Juneau City Bus is a bit up the way, not too far. The buses leave very regularly - its $2 cash each way ($4 r/t) to get to Mendenhall Glacier. it drops you off a mile and a half from the visitor center site, but it's a nice, paved walkway. You can take your time at the glacier and the falls, walk back the path to the bus stop and get back to town. Easy peasy.

As someone who has lived in Alaska for over 20 years and currently full time RVing next time take the cruise that takes you to Seward or Whittier. Then either rent a RV or do a rail tour and go south and north. Halibut fishing in Homer, Matanuska Glacier is accessible by car near Palmer. Go to Talkeetna and get an air charter to land on Denali. Take the bus tour though Denali. Get to Fairbanks and North Pole. Get a copy of "The Milepost."

Our Alaskan cruise was a lot like yours, however the weather was not our issue. We were on the 7/6-7/16 Ruby Princess sailing where the Bar Pilot smashed into the pier in San Francisco on embarkation day, causing a 2 foot hole in the stern. We were docked in SF for 3 nights while they fixed it. (We live in the area, so....yeah.) Our 10 day cruise turned into a 7 day-er. We had to miss Sitka, Glacier Bay, Juneau, (and the helicopter/glacier landing - that's why we booked the cruise as well). We did dock in Ketchikan and Prince Rupert, BC. The weather was great at both ports! I even got to rock my today is someday t-shirt without having to wear a jacket!! We then set sail back to SF. Luckily we all received a little compensation, so we were able to book a re-do cruise next July. We made the best of what we had and had a great time! It definitely is beautiful up there and we can't wait to see what we missed.

We went on our first Alaskan C ruise this June on the Majestic Princess and loved it, and we had perfect weather the whole time. We had friends that were there the week before, and friends there the week after, and they both had mostly rain, you just can never tell in Alaska. We just went the one-way cruise from Anchorage to Vancouver , we got to see Mendenhall, we went to the botanical garden, but our cruise did not go to Skagway, which we were sorry, but that will be next time. We only saw whales far off the ship doing their big splashes , we really just saw the splashes lol! Next time!

Next time going to AK, fly to Fairbanks and do the land tour then cruise back down. We did that last time but went to Fairbanks 2 days early rented a car and toured on our own. We even got to see Santa at the north pole.

You should have seen after I got to my first duty station in SC I am a little HM just a postage stamp for hospital corpsman and I was trying to figure out where to put my plate of dishes and asked and used the navy term for it and the officer knew what I was talking about, the enlisted person said wow I haven't heard that term in a long time.
