I much prefer cruising to any warm location. Choosing to go on an Alaska cruise was entirely my own mistake.. I know that most people think it's great.
Oh, got it. That makes sense. I’m doing a Mexican Riviera cruise on Discovery Princess later in the year. I’m guessing that is more your style. 😊🌴⛵️
August Norwegian
Perfect timing. You’ll have a great time!
Believe it or not, cruising Alaska in April and October can be beautiful. As with any time of the year in Alaska, the weather can be variable. Of course, if you’re a delicate hothouse flower, then don’t go during those seasons. One blessing is that in the spring and fall there are few children on the ship, which can make your cruise so much more enjoyable.
You’ve made some good points. As a Southern California native, I might just be a hothouse variety, but I plan to brave it next April.
I’ve been researching the Alaska cruise for a couple weeks. Your video is my favourite! Super informative and fun, most importantly, to the point.
Thank you!
Cap with the rain hood, brilliant!
I know, RIGHT? Thanks for watching and commenting.
I said the same thing 😊
Hi Kristie, I am going on the same Princess Cruise in Mid June. Vancouver North bound and up, Ketchikan just R&R, Skagway- White Pass railway, Juneau- Whale watching tour, and the Mendenhall Glacier, The dome train from Whittier to McKinley Also the 3 days and nights in McKinley/Denali, Flying over and all around Denali and glacier landing in a small 6 seater plane, then paddlewheel boat on up to Fairbanks to fly home. Thank you for you tips and sharing. You are so right about this being a bucket list vacation. Cheers to you Kristie
Oooo. You’ll be there a month ahead of me. I’m so excited for you. The flight seeing sounds AMAZING! And, the paddle boat. So cool. Enjoy and thanks for your lovely comment.
Thank you for including the links to the items that worked well for you!
Happy to help. Thanks for watching!
Cruises from Seattle will include Sitka instead of Skagway/Haines. Lots of history, scenery and EAGLES there, instead of the shops! I love Sitka! I found Vancouver to be more of a hassle than Seattle, but loved the beauty of the Inside Passage. I have done four Holland America cruises, including a one week long extension land tour and one two-week cruise across the Alaska Bay. Each one was beloved and different experience. And if you want adventure minus the luxury… take the Alaska Ferry through the Aleutians or go in the winter during the Iditarod!! My travel partner (husband) is gone now, so I may never go back, but my heart is in Alaska.
Sounds like you have wonderful memories of all your visits to Alaska. Sitka is not on our itinerary for this summer, but that gives us another reason to go back to Alaska. 😊. Thank you for watching and commenting. I love to hear about others experiences.
Excellent video! It was very comprehensive with practical tips. Thanks!
Thank you for watching and commenting! 😊
We have enjoyed several Alaska cruises, twice with land packages. I must state your video is one of the best we have seen. Your presentation is excellent, very informative.
Wow, thank you! So encouraging.
This is very practical information! Thank you. I’m going on my first cruise in September, cruising from Whittier to Vancouver.
Glad you enjoyed. Tune in the Friday at 6pm for a video on Alaskan excursions. Happy sailing!

Thanks for sharing, got a lot of idea what to pack, doing our alaska cruise this coming end of august

Great video. We do hate the Vancouver port. 2.5 hours to check in. They had us dump our water just before security. It was hot in there and several people had to get medical attention from all the heat and standing. It is such a mess.
We didn’t experience the need to empty our water bottles. That stinks. Definitely a place to come prepared with snacks.
Check out this video. I didn’t include Sitka this time, but next time I will. th-cam.com/video/Ww-JZIshmIw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=-sK8Zn4KEzRpooW8
This is an amazing video. I love how you presented the info. Thank you for sharing.
You are so kind. It was a fun one to research and make. I’m hoping that it helps people make the right choices on their Alaskan cruise. Happy sailing!

Great helpful video, thanks! Heading out on our first cruise to Alaska in 10 days. Didn't even think about mosquitoe repellent, thanks for the tip!
We went on a nature walk in Ketchikan and the guide suggested to spray up. Better safe than sorry. One Alaskan viewer suggested that the mosquitos aren’t big, but the pack a punch! Have a great cruise? What ship?
Thank you for this video. Going to Alaska, August 30. Also doing the land tour. Excellent video!
Thank you for the kudos! Bringing cruise information in the most entertaining way possible is my goal. You will have a great time!
Excellent presentation, great job and thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Lots of great information. You are easy on the eyes as well.
Thanks for the compliment, you are too kind. Happy sailing!
So many good points. I look forward to the day with the free laundry perk. That would definitely help me cut down on how much clothing I pack. Thanks for watching and commenting 😊
Holland America has a laundry package for $59 for the week.
Good to know. That seems like a deal. 🧺
Love the foldable hat, I am definitely purchasing one.
Such a clever design. You’ll love it! Thanks for watching! 🍪
Thanks for the video. This is one of the best Alaska videos, I've seen. You just get right to the point - perfect.
I apppreciate your tips about clothing - just essentials, which are really needed. In other videos people show so much stuff regarding clothing for Alaska. I'm always thinking, why should I need so much things. I did not wear so much different casual clothes back home in Europe. Why 😮 should I do this on a casual cruise. It's all about combination and wearing things several times.
Your tip of wearing a cap with hoddie definitely works, even when it's raining cats and dogs - I know it from my own experience as a golf player in Europe over years.
And with just packing essentials I need (none things for just in case), I can fly with carry-on and personal item, 😁 as I have international flight to LAX with short time frame to connecting domestic flight to Seattle. Btw due to my loyalty status with Norwegian I'm lucky, I have free laundry. 🤩
So, I have already booked my 9 day Alaska cruise in October 2024. Okay, it's colder, but - and here it comes - in average of last years in October there are only 4 days of rain. And just to say, I sometimes simply miss colder days since we moved from Europe down to French-Polynesia, so cold temperatures do not bother me. And a comfortable side effect - cruising in Alaska in October is cheaper and less crowded. 😊
Greetings from Moorea (sister island of Tahiti) in French-Polynesia 🌴 🏖 😎 🇵🇫 🇫🇷 🇪🇺
I’m impressed you can travel carry on only. I need a suitcase just for lotions, potions, and makeup.
Just sailed 1st of season on Holland America Zaandam to Alaska, it was wonderful. BUT wish we had known: $17 USD per day Crew Appreciation NOT shared by ALL as bar server told me. Best to give directly, bring $1-2s per tab instead of signing tip on bill b/c 18% is added to room charge. Also, Guest Services do not share Crew Appreciation. Pop drinks not included but ice tea, lemonade, coffee is (not other specialty coffees). Otherwise fantastic food and service. Skagway White Pass train is a must even at $155 usd after watching free 20 min film in museum about Klondike Gold Rush. Ask questions - be informed. Rain, warm clothing is a no brainer. It's Alaska people!
Wow. This was great! Thanks for sharing your experience. Glad all went well. 😀
Very informative...a big time-saver...very good...TNX
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching and commenting! 😀
You are correct. I meant one end in Canada. Thanks for catching that. 😊
Great tips. I have been on a cruise 🛳 to Alaska twice . September will be my 3rd. I learned some really good practical tips from you.❤
Glad it was helpful! Have fun on your third go around. 😀🚢🛳️
Excellent video! I set sail on the Eurodam from Seattle to Alaska and back next week. Can’t wait!
Holland American does a great job in Alaska. Be sure to bring orange to wear at their orange party and check out this video where I talk about HAL. th-cam.com/video/fclkVdkWMH0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=XofBr1fQA1VMEj1Y

This for sure!

Flying back from Ankorage is a big pain with bad departure times. Better to fly there and sail back to Vancouver or Seattle
I found that to be the case. I wish I would have known. Our flight home from Fairbanks is 2:30 AM😢😮
I have sailed Alaska 8 times. I cannot get enough of Alaska. Princess sails to Sitka also, which is a fun port to get off the ship and trek to many sites.
I watched a video this weekend about Sitka. We are sailing on Sapphire Princess this summer and unfortunately we aren't stopping at Sitka. Thanks for the information. I'm hoping to visit Alaska regularly and next time I'll look for an itinerary that includes that port. Happy sailing!
You might trying flying into Alaska and stay in a town and actually get to know Alaska and not just the tourist experience. An authentic experience in Alaska includes getting to know the locals.
@@tptteachplaytravel6196 I have flown in and enjoyed Alaska and the locals. My daughter-in-law is Aleut.
I just booked my 31st Alaska cruise. I have to say that you gave a great video for only going once. Most of it was spot on. I've seen more salmon in August and September. Glacier Bay is a must!! If you forget your binoculars, the photo gallery on Princess has the Vortex brand that are very competitive to Amazon. You will probably only see bears from the ship with binoculars. The "Alaska Cruise Companion" book is invaluable for first time cruisers. The whale locations aren't as random as you would think and it increases your chances of seeing them. I'm on the Grand Princess starting May 22 to June 5. I'll be the guy wearing shorts. :) I love your cookie theme!!
Thanks for the tip on the salmon runs. Thanks for commenting and sharing. 😊🚢😊
Thanks!
So helpful thank you so much
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching and commenting. 😀🚢🛳️😎
Went on Windstar it was great going on a Boutique line going into small ports not the huge ports with 6 ships in large ports. huge ships huge problems and crowds.
I can definitely see the advantage of a smaller ship and smaller ports. The cruising industry seems to be on the bigger the better kick, but I’m with you, smaller means less crowds. ❤. Thanks for watching and sharing.
Yes do video on Diy ports😊
Starting to work on it today. Thank you for watching and commenting. 😀🚢. Happy sailing.

I agree! For me cruising is a tasting and when I find something I like, I can go back and savor. You?
Thanks for the advice on how to dress in Alaska. Now all we have to do is to get some winter clothing.
Agree with the Vancouver port. It is by far the least convenient port to cruise from.
We are paying $760pp for a 14 day cruise (Vancouver - Seward) on HAL Nieuw Amsterdam in early September.
Dang! That is such a great deal. You can use your saving to buy a scarf, some gloves, and a warm hat. Have a great time and please report back how it went. 😊🚢🛳️
Our last HAL trip to Alaska had a stop in Victoria which we’ve enjoyed in past cruises. This time, we arrived a 8pm and left at 11:30. Not enough time to enjoy that city
We have a similar situation happening with our stop in Victoria. Originally it was supposed to arrive at 10 am and they switched it to 4 pm. No time to go to the gardens. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I like your energy . Liked and subscribed from Toronto. Going to Alaska on royal princess for two weeks in 3 weeks . Thank you for your tips .

You are so cute!! I love all the props!!! Thank you for the great information! We are going to Alaska, sailing out of San Francisco this September!!!! 118 days!
We are in San Francisco right now on our repositioning cruise on Celebrity Summit that is headed to Alaska for the Alaska season. What ship are you sailing on?
@@cruisingwithkristie We are on the Crown Princess. Enjoy your repositioning cruise. A repositioning cruise is on our list!
Looks like you were in Glacier Bay today. Lucky lady. We just got home from our repositioning cruise on the celebrity summit. Our first Celebrity cruise and the ship was great! The weather didn’t cooperate though with 50 mph winds and 20 foot swells. I now feel very confident that I don’t get seasick. Enjoy your last few days onboard. 😊. Let us know your thoughts on the Crown Princess. 🚢🛳️
10 days and counting Princess Discovery to Alaska 😀
Ooo. Lucky you. Are you doing a repositioning cruise and then Alaska?
Did this last year. Beautiful ship
I've been pricing and saw the cruisetours too. I thought it would be a good idea for a pretour because we usually get to the departure port city the day before...but like you said-it's super expensive and doesn't include most meals and excursions. Yikes! I thought maybe we would do a cruise starting in Seward so we can have a couple of days and make our own precruise tour.
That is what my brother is doing. I tried to rent a car for one day in Fairbanks but they were sold out. You may want to look into reserving soon.
FYI..Princess sails out of San Francisco for an Alaskan cruise. Awesome to sail under the Golden Gate Bridge! Thanks for the video! 😊
Now THAT would be a fun cruise? Is it a longer cruise then? Thanks for watching and commenting. Happy Sailing!😊
@@cruisingwithkristie Yes, 11 nights!
After thinking about your comment, I realized that we get to sail out of San Francisco in a couple of weeks since it is a stop on our repositioning cruise. I can’t wait!
You don’t have to rely on the cruiseline for the land portion. You can do it on your own. Consider doing it n an RV.
That is a great idea. Thanks for watching and commenting. 😊🚐
What a great video - what side of ship was your room-
Thank you for watching and commenting 0:02 Since we had an inside cabin, it didn’t really make a difference. And with a round trip, the side of the ship isn’t that important since if you doing see it one way, you will on the return. If I were sailing a one way, I’d want to be on the side that views land. 😊
We are sailing round trip out of San Francisco, I believe it’s a new alternative to Seattle or Vancouver
That’s awesome! How many days is your cruise?
Wife & I made our first cruise ever in September of 23, we enjoyed it so much we booked another cruise for September 25, on same ship line & ship. (Norwegian Encore) we only had 2 disappointments #1 due to high winds & saftey concerns, the captain elected not to dock in Skagway so we didn't get to travel the white pass. # 2, we took the " totem poles and lighthouse" tour. It was VERY disappointing. All we saw was a " reproduction " totem pole, NOT any of the real original ones. Aside from these minor disappointments it was a WONDERFUL cruise.
I'm glad you enjoyed your cruise overall! It's always a bummer when unexpected events like high winds impact the itinerary. Hopefully, your next cruise will be smooth sailing all the way!
Can you please make layering For July weather.
Will do. It will come out on May 17 if all goes as planned. Thank you for watching, and commenting. Happy sailing!
FWIW, if you want to see "real" glaciers and calving early in the season is best. Late in the year it's just not as impressive.
Want t-shirts, ball caps and other souvenirs? We were surprised that Juneau was equal to or less expensive than most other tourist destinations.
I had to look up FWIW (for what it’s worth 😂). I didn’t know about a difference in the year with calving. Even though we are heading to Alaska again in July, I’m already planning to go on one of the first sailings in April/May 2025. Thanks for the heads up!
How's is the weather in July? We are set to sail in July from Seattle and I want to be sure we dress appropriately.
The thing about Alaska is that one day can be in the high 70s like it is in Anchorage today, and 40 degrees the next. No need for a heavy parka, but a warm jacket with lots of layering options is a must. Check out this video where I share what I am packing. PACK for a 7 DAY ALASKA CRUISE: What you MUST know!
th-cam.com/video/aVAxFwI1iQA/w-d-xo.html
When are you sailing? We are doing one way out of Vancouver and Land Cruiser on sapphire princess in mid May.
You are beating us. I am a teacher and will finish out the school year. We sail in July. Look out for orcas from the ship. Thanks for watching and commenting.
That was us. We retired from teaching a year ago. Wishing you the best in these last 6-8 weeks.
NCL is stretching the shoulder times with early April and late October Alaskan cruises in 2024.
Are you sailing an extreme shoulder? I don’t think I would unless they practically gave it away.
Yes. In October. We will see how it goes.
For the most part, your video was very good and informative. However, you were misleading in one area. Princess does have land cruises that start in Anchorage. The land portion can be anywhere from 3 to 7 days.
My friend and I are booked for a land cruise this Summer (2024) during July and August. We will be flying to Anchorage 2 days early. Our land portion is 7 days, and we will visit Elias Wrangell National Park, Fairbanks, and Denali. We will travel by bus and railroad.
Then, we will board the Royal Princess in Whittier for a 7 day cruise ending in Vancouver, Canada. We will stay several days for sightseeing before flying home.
We were able to take advantage of a shore excursion sale, so we saved some money.
That sounds AMAZING! Thank you for the information. Sounds like a bucket list vacation! Have a great time. 😀🚢😊
You dont have to sail out of Seattle. You can go RT from San Francisco too...
That is good to know especially if you live in that area. Thanks for the 411. If you are like me you still know 411 means information. 😂😊. Thanks for watching and commenting. Happy sailing!
I want to try The smaller boats like UNcruise or National Geographic Venture.
I’m with you. Smaller cruise lines are definitely on my bucket list for the future especially for certain destinations , but since I love production shows, I wonder if I would miss them. 🤔🎭
@@cruisingwithkristie Only one way to find out 😉
Agreed. Give it a go and report back. 😊
Definitely do small ship cruising in Alaska. Leave the floating cities for ocean crossing cruises.
Ours ends at Seward
I forgot to include Stewart as a northern port. Thank you for catching that and sharing. Thank you for watching and sharing. Happy sailing!
We love HAL, but the last year their website is screwed up. I get a lot of “oops” screens when trying to book dining or excursions. By the time I get it to work, the better excursions are filled, speciality dining all booked.. Sailing HAL to Hawaii in Jan 2025, and a lot of excursions are off the books or wait listed. Crazy! HAL needs to notify customers when excursions and dining open up for booking. Otherwise you’re checking daily to find out. Thanks for sharing
That stinks. Hopefully they will figure the app out soon. I’m sure they are aware of the urgency of the situation. Anymore we can’t sail without it. Happy sailing and thanks for commenting.
I'm spending my wad in each port. Going buck wild with excursions 😅
OMG 😂. You are hilarious. I’m thinking for future videos to add a Kristieisms to the screen for things like spending the wad. Going buck wild will definitely make the cut. Thank you for watching and commenting. Happy sailing and excursioning!!!

All one-way Alaska cruises have to have one end at Vancouver. There are no one-way cruises that begin or end in Seattle. Open-loop cruises between 2 US ports must visit a port outside of North America and the Caribbean. It's why most Panama Canal cruises visit Cartagena, Colombia.
I didn't realize that all one ways go out of Vancouver. So interesting and good to know. I appreciate the fact check. Please keep watching and commenting when I miss that mark. I do my best to bring accurate information every time, but I sure don't know everything! Happy Sailing!
Mostly true, but there are a few Seattle-Sitka and Seattle-Juneau one-way cruises offered through Lindblad/National Geographic.
Cruis ship tax purposes 🙃🙃
Vancouver BC is in North America. I believe you meant a non US port.
I am a tour bus driver in Victoria, B.C. and cruise patrons get here and don't believe how large we are!!!!
I guessing you mean the city not the people. 😂🤣😊. Thanks for watching. We visited last fall when we did a repositioning cruise out of Vancouver. Your city has a ton of great chocolatiers. We tried 6 of them. What’s your favorite? 🍫
@@cruisingwithkristie I am one of the Hop On tour as well as the Butchart's Garden tour bus drivers from the Empress.
I bet you meet lots of interesting people. What is the best time of year to visit?
@@cruisingwithkristie Between middle of April until September. The usual months. If you want to see Tulips and Daffodils at Butchart's I would say April and May. For the Roses would be the 3rd week in June. Don't forget the Fireworks to Music display at Butchart's on Saturday nights, July & August.
Thanks for the tips. I wish we could have gone to the gardens earlier this month on our sailing. Oh well a reason to return to Victoria. I think next time I’ll leave the ship at home and fly in.
Ugh... we aren't going to Skagway...
Just a reason to go back to Alaska on another cruise. 😀
Thank you so much for vídeo. I will go alaska next august. I will do inside passage. I will go for seattle. So...your video was very good for me.
I'm glad that you have found the video helpful. Alaska is a great experience. Don't miss the Klondike Doughboy in Skagway. Delish!
Where is the Bald Eagle zoo
I’ll be going alone maybe this summer
If you are willing, you will meet tons of people be willing to join teams at the games and trivia. We befriended a woman last year and sat with her at the games and the theater.
@@cruisingwithkristie do they play mahjong
I have seen groups playing. I think it is popular on cruises.
Are those cookies fresh made?
Depends on the day. Some come out of our over and others out of Costco's oven. Thanks for watching!
We cruised to Alaska recently ... it was boring, boring, boring and very expensive.
That is too bad that you had such a boring experience. What type of cruise do you find exciting? I’d love to give it a try.
Oh my goodness ! I swear this is the absolute first time I have ever heard anyone say an Alaska cruise was boring or that they didn’t like it.
like
only those looking for a carnival sail away party and twerk contests.
There is no such thing as the right itinerary, you do you and choose yourself. Also go go isn’t needed on vacation
So true. Everyone has their own idea of what makes a vacation great. Alaska tends to be excursion intensive. But, of course, you do you. Happy sailing and thanks for watching and commenting. 😊
@@cruisingwithkristie actually it is not, mostly only afternoon or before noon so only half days
Mid-April to mid October. Not only is it colder, the days are shorter too. You have way over simplified your "facts" about animals. Alaska is not Disney land; you can predict when and what you will see animals.
Well…Maybe a little. But my mother in law did just come back and saw orcas off the ship, coyotes and moose and bear. I’d never have a chance to see these animals in the wild in Southern California. So at least the are in Alaska and I might see them.
I did Alaska cruise in 2022 and was so disappointed. One thing that I noticed is going in September is a big mistake. We had nothing but fog and rain with exception of glacier bay, which was spectacular. However, Alaska cannot hold a candle to Norway. Having just completed Norway the year before, Alaska was a big disappointment. Norway is absolutely magnificent. I have no interest in going back to Alaska. Neither my wife or I. Alaska is not all that in a bag of chips, if you have to spend hundreds of dollars at every port to see wildlife to me that is a big disappointment. The cost of seeing wildlife and excursions in Norway is far less expensive with far greater beauty.
That does sound disappointing and it makes me want to book a cruise to Norway, which is already on my list. I went in July and have another scheduled for this July. We lucked out with the weather, ironically our Glacier Bay day was our only really rainy day. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Try Norway in June & be ready to wear blackout mask. You’ll find your watching tv or hanging out & it’s 1 AM! Bright as day 😁our curtains aboard Princess didn’t do the trick, happy travels.
You didn’t go to Alaska. You went on a cruise to Alaska. If you wanted to go to Alaska, you would have. Seven days, on a cruise, is an odd way to see a territory as large as Alaska. 😂😂😂😂😂
@@GhettoGirlTravels I did a cruise to Norway. I did a cruise to Alaska. Norway blew the pants off of Alaska! Just saying……😂😂😂😂😂
You are so right. I think that the cruise was a sampler that makes me want to return, rent a car, and stay for a while. Cruising is a great way to try things out. And see Glacier Bay and fjords from the water. Thanks for watching and sharing. 😊
Do all cruise vloggers live in Florida and assume "all" cruises are simply paddling around the shallows from Florida? 🙄
Cruising is a world-wide method of travel, acting "surprised" that weather exists (ZOMG, panic!) when travelling is utterly *ridiculous* and ignorant.
Who are these people who don't know how to dress for rain?
As if Florida doesn't get rain...?
Also, I am so sick & tired of American bigotry against anything not almighty 'Merica.
The Vancouver port is just GORGEOUS, CLEAN, SAFE and DECENT, unlike MANY US ports, especially the horrendous ports in Florida and Texas.
Pretending those horrendous ports are "superior" is ridiculously skewed and bigoted.
We've never had to wait in Vancouver. Ever.
In fact the only people with "problems" at the Vancouver port were those who showed up igmorant & arrogant - like the line of 300 people DEMANDING to be wheeled on board by port staff, when they were not disabled folk, they WALKED IN, and then plunked down and sulked.
Genuinely disabled folks, like ME, bring our own equipment and don't DEMAND "servants" eheel us on board. The "problem" on that day WAS NOT THE PORT, it was ignorant, entitled, lazy people who behaved in repulsive ways.
I am glad that you have had such great experiences in Vancouver. Maybe it was just that I went at the busiest time of year. I definitely found Vancouver lovely and the people very helpful.
Id love to see a video on how to do the ports for cheap
