Fun fact: statistically, Ice and Ground do the most collective damage to every possible type combination in the game. Mamoswine has an argument for the best possible dual STAB.
That explains a lot. In fact, the combination of Ground and Ice can hit for supereffective damage to 9 types (Dragon, Electric, Fire, Flying, Grass, Ground, Poison, Rock and Steel), while only being resisted by bug/water (Golisopod/Araquanid) or bug/ice (Frosmoth), as well as steel (Bronzong), Water (Rotom-W), Fire (Rotom-H) and Ice (Rotom-F) types with levitate and bug types with thick fat, almost all of them weak to rock coverage. When coupled with a monstrous 130 base attack, usable 80 base speed, good 110/80/60 base bulk and Ice shard, Mamoswine is a fearsome threat and one of my 5 favourite pokemon. Galar-Darmanitan is in that sense just overall a better Mamoswine, with more speed, coverage and power, at the cost of defensive utility, Ice shard and STAB Earthquake.
In terms of super effective STABS, Ground + Ice is the best in that front. But if you're looking for best neutral STABS, then the attention gets turned to Marshadow, and that's because no pokemon can resist both of its STABS. Normal + Ghost is the only type combo that can resist both Fighting + Ghost, and that combo hasn't materialized. (EDIT: Yes, I'm aware that Hisuian Zorua/Zoroark exist now, but those pokemon were released long after this initial post was made.)
Fun fact: In gen 7 before Buzzwole was banned from UU, people used Peck for Mamoswine's fourth move. While it didn't outright KO Buzzwole from full health, people were willing to sacrifice a Z-crystal slot for him, upgrading Peck into a hilarious Supersonic Skystrike. The set disappeared after Buzzwole's ban, but seeing Mamoswine take flight is the funniest thing competitive Pokémon has ever seen.

Mamoswine is one of the few pokemon in the game that can take its ice typing and turn it in to an advantage rather than a disadvantage, due to its monstrous attack, ice shard, and additional ground typing for a stealth rock neutrality. Ice shard is the reason mamo can work, because it allows mamo to hit so many pokemon with a powerful x4 priority move, and turns its ice typing from a defensive liability to an offensive strength.
@TheNintendoBustr abomasnow and glalie are still kinda bad in comparison to most megas, and the kyurem forms get by on their absurd stats. FSG made a joke about Swine Flu at the end of the video but now I’m starting to think he might have been onto something. I think the theme with Mamoswine is the changing time. Notice how Mamoswine’s Shiny has “Swine Flu” written all over it, and that was apparently before the incident even began. Come to think of it, the COVID situation is kinda similar. Gen 4: Swine Flu, Sinnoh games Gen 8: COVID-19, Sinnoh remakes
Can we talk about how cool it is to have a good ice type around? Goddamn, just imagine how empty the decent ice types would be if Mamoswine didnt exist. Right now, besides Kyurem-Black, Kyurem-White, and freaking Arceus-Ice, (and arguably weavile, but I'd say they are on the same level basically) there is no stronger ice-type pokemon. And that has basically been the case for years : Weavile and Piloswine were the only two non legendaries decent ice type pokemon. And while Weavile fitted the frail fast f**ker niche, Mamoswine was the hulking beast that everybody was scared of for a while. Kudos to Mamoswine for making a horribly typing somewhat relevant, otherwise we would have basically been stuck to systematically using ice moves on non-ice pokemon for years on end.
Fun fact ice and ground either neutrally or super effectively hit every single type in the game. When they gave it thick fat it became so nice. Even the buffed oblivious is fantastic.
Huh, I knew Mamoswine was useful, but I never realized how much of an anti meta machine it is. And anti meta is my favorite way to build a team. I need to train one of these things.
Mamoswine and his magnetic brethren instructed a select few species how to fight the onslaught of their draconian adversaries, and now these "Fairy types" gather at the same spot every December 25th to pay their utmost respect.
Mamoswine is awesome. It was the original dragonslayer before Fairy types came around. But it's still an dragonslayer all around and having it into my team was an blast.
@@felixlee9645 The Bug type was the least of its worries, honestly. It was the numerous other weaknesses that came with its type that it had to worry about. But even that didn't mean much for a sweeper, whose archetype usually gets done in by chip damage and priority moves. But once its checks were removed, that elf's smirk would be giving the Grinch a run for his money.
An perfect example that an Ice type Pokemon that can be good, just as long as it has the right combo typing, better stats, amazing movesets & good coverage. Mamoswine was great.
@@NerdX151 in gens 3-5 it's hard countered by sand stream (which was almost always present) in the other gens you still need 5 mons to support it. With the right team support you can make any mon work, but that still doesn't make it a good pokemon
Marc Liljeqvist it’s not in OU, it’s PU. In an ideal competitive scenario, Shedinja dies to virtually any entry hazard, status, and a ton of common coverage moves, like Hidden Power Fire. It’s not good.
Maybe they should stop making every Ice type be defensive or just plain suck. The only somewhat passible defensive Ice Type is Aavalug who has niche on stall in OU.
Good video, & Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays! Also, shoutouts to winning VGC without EVs. That's a good Mamoswine! But I am disappointed by the lack of commentary on Eviolite Piloswine.
Merry Christmas and thank you for showing some Pokémon in the competitive format. Although truth be told I'm a casual player however learning how the other side views some Pokémon is valuable so thank you.
Seldom is a mon so beastly looking, yet also somehow cuddly, but still totally wrecks all at the same time. Ugh I love Mamo so much it makes me want to cry.
I didnt see the typo the first time I saw this, but now that I do, I cant unsee it. I demand you fix the first "Piloswine" at once, please and thank you.
I'm interested to see how Mamoswine's future pans out since Gen8's change to Own Tempo, making Mamoswine now immune to Intimidate on top of Confusion! Obv it hasn't exactly taken Gen8 VGC by storm (yet??), but it really is a very dangerous, albiet, niche pick. Prankster Swagger from Thundurus-I and the even better Prankster Swagger AND Tailwind from Tornadus-I, can potentially make Mamoswine absolutely DEVISTATING vs a good amount of teams. With it's good match up vs VGC2020 staples like Togekiss (RIP) Incineroar, Lando-T, Regieleki, the new/old Kanto Legendary Bird forms, and (with the right support) even Mons it doesn't match up great against like Cinderace, Rillaboom, Tapu Fini, etc, I wouldn't be surprised to see Mamoswine rise in usage as the season goes on and even future seasons... Prob won't become a STAPLE by any means, but I could see it surpassing "niche" into a semi-regularly used Mon that teams need to be prepared for
HELL YEAH ITS MA BOI I've used Mamoswine in OU and VGC since 2014 and it is a monster. The best set I used was assault vest mamoswine which decimated unsuspecting teams as they were caught completely off guard by a mamoswine living special super effective moves quite well especially fire moves. I really do think it's an underrated pokemon and the fact that it frequently moved between OU and UU shows that.
I heavily underestimated Piloswine in Gen III, since it looked unimpressive in comparison to Pokémon that I liked (Feraligatr, Hariyama, Espeon and Umbreon being the ones I used the most in Colosseum). But boy, was I amazed when Mamoswine was revealed. Shame that I barely used it after evolving it in Platinum.

Gen 4: Swine Flu, Sinnoh games
Gen 8: COVID-19, Sinnoh remakes
It could learn Ancient Power in gen 2 as well, same with Likitung being able to learn Rollout in both gen 2 and gen 3.

I like how we have more Gen 4 picks then Gen 3 picks. RIP RSE
@@mohammedchowdhury4058 if you look closely most gen 4 pokes are continuations of evo lines started either in gen 1 or 2, thats why theres so many.
Magmorta? I think there's a letter missing my guy.
@@TerraTuso oh yeah my mistake i'll fix that
Edit: did it.
I think a really strong and fast special attacking ice type would actually be a huge splash in the meta.
Isn‘t Alolan-Vulnona pretty good?
Cloyster?
Cloyster used to be the only decent ice type before mamo arrived, weavile has its niche but it's just too frail.
@@Mangosjoraa pex beat's it
Fun fact ice and ground either neutrally or super effectively hit every single type in the game. When they gave it thick fat it became so nice. Even the buffed oblivious is fantastic.
Huh, I knew Mamoswine was useful, but I never realized how much of an anti meta machine it is. And anti meta is my favorite way to build a team. I need to train one of these things.
How good was Beedrill actually? (Why do I bother asking when someone else probably already has one hundred times)
I'll just tell you. Trash until ORAS
And at that point it crawled it's way up to UU.
How good was false Swipe gaming's Christmas actually????

Pretty bad
Mamoswine, the true dragonslayer
Mamoswine and his magnetic brethren instructed a select few species how to fight the onslaught of their draconian adversaries, and now these "Fairy types" gather at the same spot every December 25th to pay their utmost respect.
@@gengarzilla1685 that sounds like a power ranger backstory
And weavile too
Makes a bit of sense. Mammoths came after the dinosaurs
Funnily enough now they're showing almost every common OU mon in Gen 8 Who's boss.
I love this thing. My Choice Band Mamoswine demolished everything in its path for a few local singles tournaments.
Mamoswine is awesome. It was the original dragonslayer before Fairy types came around. But it's still an dragonslayer all around and having it into my team was an blast.
Mamoswine can also slay the Dragon/Fire & Dragon/Steel dragons too. Unlike the Fairy-Types.

How good was Celebi ACTUALLY?
As much as I want Infernape, I'd be stoked with this. Celebi has always been one of my favorites.
But dat 4x weakness to bug doh
@@felixlee9645 The Bug type was the least of its worries, honestly. It was the numerous other weaknesses that came with its type that it had to worry about. But even that didn't mean much for a sweeper, whose archetype usually gets done in by chip damage and priority moves. But once its checks were removed, that elf's smirk would be giving the Grinch a run for his money.
I've been requesting 2nd this for MONTHS.

Celebi is an uber spirit in smash ultimate, does that count?
love how solid mamoswine is throughout the games
An perfect example that an Ice type Pokemon that can be good, just as long as it has the right combo typing, better stats, amazing movesets & good coverage. Mamoswine was great.
Just be a offensively good ice type.
I just realized how much we need a mega-Mamoswine.
how GOOD was shedinja ACTUALLY
It's not
@@590488 It is in the OU tier, and if you make use of the Wonder Guard ability, it can be a beast.
@@NerdX151 its TRASH
Mamoswine and Weavile prove that Ice Types can still be very good and the type doesn’t need a buff.
They just need to be better designed.
How dare you insult mamoswine
Maybe they should stop making every Ice type be defensive or just plain suck. The only somewhat passible defensive Ice Type is Aavalug who has niche on stall in OU.

“Shaymin sky was eventually banned because it was over powered”
After showing it being one shot by mamoswine
I mean...By that point in video the fact that Mamo was the op wrecker was established.
Remember, just because a powerful Pokemon has a check doesn't make it balanced.
Not like Mamo can switch in on it at all. Skymin OHKOes it with Seed Flare
This is why we call Mamoswine "The OP Slayer."
Mamoswine is so good, that it even managed to cross the Galar Border!

How GOOD were Murkrow and Honchkrow ACTUALLY?
It has always bothered me how low mamoswine’s tusks are on its face
Ah! Why would you say that! Now that bothers me and I can't unsee it 😅

Fun Fact: Swinub are used for finding hot springs
funny how for years I thought this line was pretty much ass turned out to be a pretty good one in fact
If fairy types didn’t become a thing I think Mamoswine would’ve been OU in Gen 6; maybe not Gen 7 or 8 but surely 6
if the icetype werent such a hinderance in defense mamoswine would be a better hippowdon
No sand stream or reliable recovery :(
@@jerry3115 still, natural bulk and priority move in ice shard AND way better attack.
Mamo is great, but hippowdon is used for bulk and sand, mamo is used to shred teams. Not really comparable tbh

I didnt see the typo the first time I saw this, but now that I do, I cant unsee it. I demand you fix the first "Piloswine" at once, please and thank you.
I kind of like Piloswine more than Mamoswine, and i loved Swinub's animation in pokemon go when it runs around... xD
Wonderful Pokemon, one of the best bulldozers in the game.
Prob won't become a STAPLE by any means, but I could see it surpassing "niche" into a semi-regularly used Mon that teams need to be prepared for
HELL YEAH ITS MA BOI
I've used Mamoswine in OU and VGC since 2014 and it is a monster.
The best set I used was assault vest mamoswine which decimated unsuspecting teams as they were caught completely off guard by a mamoswine living special super effective moves quite well especially fire moves.
I really do think it's an underrated pokemon and the fact that it frequently moved between OU and UU shows that.
Merry Christmas man! Great work as always
