  • This is the first in the series of my bikepacking adventure in Southern California. Almost 4 years after finishing the world bike trip, it feels brilliant to be back on the bike. Although it took some time to adjust to filming a trip again.

Blocked by the same fences you were. Then i thought will he be tempted by that sandy shortcut you took a few days later. I think Adam is running bigger tyres though? @Adam rreat video and the jet lag when you fly into LA is killer. Better than being in the UK with the rain beating against the windows!

Southern Californian here, I think when a lot of people think of California, they think it is just beaches and surf, but don’t realize it has a desert that is both beautiful and harsh at the same time. I could feel the struggle as you were dealing with jet lag. ✌️🇺🇸🇬🇧✌️🚴‍♂️

I had a similar experience in Australia. I consumed 6 liters of water by 3 pm, unable to understand why I was so thirsty when the Australian weather wasn't as hot as Vietnam, and I typically didn't drink that much water. No matter how much I drank, my thirst remained unquenched. It took me weeks to realize that cold water was the key; it satisfied my thirst, which was different from Vietnam where ice was readily available and inexpensive. In Australia, ice was scarce, often only found at gas stations. When I returned home, I switched to insulated bottles to ensure my ice-cold water would last for 24 hours. And didnt have carry so much water ..

I do think that would have helped. It’s also the acclimatisation I reckon. Landing in a new country from a cold UK in Oct and being straight in the heat is a lot for the body to process.

When I was cycling in Laos and Thailand last Dec I added a sachet of electrolytes into two bottles per day. Definitely helped!

Hi, Adam. I have been following you for a long time and I just want to say that I feel so happy to see you on the road again. You may read my comment, probably when you are on the road, or at a hotel or perhaps on your tent, and you know, may be you must going through something on your own, I don’t know, all I want to say is be grateful, no matter the situation, you are fortunate enough to ride, you are one of the few lucky ones. You inspire people, you let people experience the love of being on the road, I hope you be gentle with yourself and realize how you are bringing smiles to unknown people just by riding & sharing your experience. You are amazing. Take care. 💫

I've heard about those fences early in that ride. No bueno.
I'm in SoCal and will be taking the Amtrak up to Klamath Falls, Oregon, next spring to ride south back home on the US-395. That's been on my bucket list for a while now.

Aw mate this has sparked my wanderlust. The spot where you put your bike back together at LAX at the beginning looks like the exact spot that me and Tim reassembled ours in 2020 haha. Totally get why you were drawn back there, South-West US was my first bigger trip after the "big trip" as well, albeit unfortunately not a cycling one. Great video, looking forward to the rest of the series!
