Wales! Bikepacking on a Brompton - empty roads, empty hills - snow, rain, sun, hail, happiness!

- In early March, I decided it was time to see some proper hills again, so I took my Brompton and my tent, and cycled through North Wales. I aimed for a mix of wild camping, campsites and a YHA hostel over the 4 days. Not everything went to plan.... The weather was wild! I was very glad I had my rock-solid Hilleberg tent - and earplugs. But the reward for battling the weather was being out there, alone in the empty, wintry, lonely hills and lanes. It was fantastic.
This bikepacking trip was the hardest I've done since having chemotherapy for breast cancer, which unfortunately came back last year. I've been building myself up since finishing chemo, just with frequent snippets of exercise every day, nothing crazy, just lots of little bits of plain nice old walking, running, cycling and some strength training. This ride was a bit of a test to see how well it's working...
The goal of the ride was to go and see family in Anglesey. All the cancer treatment etc meant that last year I didn't see much of my family and friends. I thought it would be brilliant to cycle & camp my way to see everyone now. Thank you to my sister-in-law! who welcomed me when I arrived at their house, quite bedraggled - but very happy.

That was epic, Susannah - more so for the personal health journey you've experienced. You have such an ability to make cosy in the most inclement conditions, and find joy in the most modest of things - a gift we could all learn from I suspect! I too had cancer, 6 weeks radiotherapy, 3 courses of chemo, and touch wood, it's gone.So to see these great adventures is inspirational, I have never been a big cyclist, and used to find a 13 mile commute hard, but I enjoy watching your adventures 👍

Taking on Snowdonia on a Brompton! That’s strength and very admirable. Well done. If you can beat Wales on a Brompton, you can beat anything.

OMG Susanna!!!! As a recovering breast cancer patient myself I ride my Brompton around where I live (Miami-Fort Lauderdale area in South Florida the US) but YOU have blown me away with this journey!! Your 'snippets' of exercise would make most very healthy people pass out! I have downloaded this video to watch again and again, and to show to friends and family! You are AMAZING!!!! I am trying to get my head around the fact that you rode all the way from Stafford to Wales before even beginning your tour of Wales!! You did have me going for a minute at the very start of the video when it said you were riding in London and I thought, "Is she riding to Wales from London?!?!?" But after watching this I have no doubt you could have ridden from London to Wales, because I just had a peek at your other videos and Ooohhhh... I am so impressed I have goose bumps on my arms just typing this. Cycling through Holland? Sweden? Hong Kong??? 😲 I have subscribed, and as it's raining out I am going to spend the evening on my stationary bike in front of the TV watching your other videos. I'm sure l will download a lot of those too, so I will have a library of inspiration at my fingertips even if our Internet goes down (we do get hurricanes here, but I have generator power so even without Internet I can still watch downloaded videos on my TV because the computer is connected to it)! OK... getting on my exercise bike now to spend the evening with you... 😊 🚴 🏰⛩⛲🌁🏙🌇🌉❤❤❤❤❤ !!!!!

Yeh on this Wales ride I had thought of riding from London like you say, cos I thought that would be nice, riding door to door is always kind of satisfying. But it was really snowy with Met Office warnings and everything, so I shortened the trip, and booked a train ticket, cos I saw that the snow was going to melt so the roads would be clear, but still be snowy on the hills and look fantastic. I really wanted to see that. And as you saw it was a bit wet and cold and windy! But it all worked out great. Aw sorry to hear about your cancer. Hello! oh that's great that you got the bike! And the bags too sounds like. Maybe one day just pack your stove etc, and do a day ride and cook a nice lunch.... You prob do that already! But if not then doing a "cooking ride" like that will mean you got one big part of doing an adventure nicely under your belt, so when you do head out on an overnight trip, you know you can easily rustle up a lovely meal... Kind of get experience chunk by chunk. So it all feels doable... If you know what I mean. Anyway! bla bla! my two pence worth! Thanks for watching and for writing! Happy cycling!

Hi Miriam!! aw yes already getting over the Berwyns day 2 was such a good feeling, like yay, I can! the next day the wind was just terrible and that was quite scary actually, but then day four when I was riding past that gorgeous lake on the way to the last pass, I felt soooo good, and so chuffed that - four days in - I felt so strong... Cos then I knew it was all gonna be OK, and I just loved it all, the climbing and everything. Love the feeling of being strong enough to deal with whatever comes, what a joy. Doing this ride has encouraged me a lot. Feels like all the little bits of going up the stairs and never taking the lift and the walking and running etc etc is working!!!! I am so grateful that I am able to do it all. You write such lovely things, thank you!! Best wishes from here in London where I am being quite lazy today better get up and go to the shops actually

I'm always impressed by your positivity in the face of adversity, Susanna but I'm amazed at how you manage to produce incredible meals whilst bike packing. On my trips I mostly subsist on a diet of flapjack and dodgy sausage rolls...
haha oh I think that sounds pretty good, love flapjacks and sausage rolls too haha. And a flask of tea to wash them down, just the ticket!

Hi Steve! thanks for writing! ah nice, a road cyclist! Actually when I was young, here in England, there wasn't much crossover between touring and racing. Very few people did what I did, which was come to cycle racing from touring. Two kind of separate worlds, for some reason. Wonder if it was the same there in Australia. I love both. Anyway! Hi Susanna, wow! I stumbled across your channel on my feed, I am a pretty experienced bikepacker and my feed has lots of bikepacking stuff I watch, so no surprise. The Bikepacking on a Brompton caught my eye and intrigued me. I loved this video and have now subscribed and will be going back through your catalogue Sweden, Hong Kong and the shorter stuff, mind blown, love your philosophy and hardcore attitude. The weather looked miserable in lots of this video but you kept on going and smiled. It exemplifies the quote I have tattoed on my forearm "Attitude is the difference between an ordeal and an adventure", something I try to live by. That was Fantastic Susanna. I've never cycled in Wales but done plenty on my motorbike. You get to see so much more on a bicycle though and you experience more too.

You are an inspiration to me Susana, keep on Brompton bikepacking ! I’m in chemo with a GI tumour and I followed you for several years, way before my diagnosis feb 23. I had a Brompton but regretfully sold it . I aim to buy another after surgery for just short rides . I could never do what you do but I can get on my bike and ride slowly taking everything in. Thanks for continuing to offer your experiences, they are treasured. Danny K
Hi Danny! thanks for the lovely message. So sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I hope you are having a good day... It sounds like a nice idea to get a bike, ready and waiting for you. Bravo you actually. For me, tbh after I was diagnosed this time I couldn't bear to look at my bike, cos it reminded me of everything that I wanted to do, but couldnt.... And after surgery I was stuck for quite long while I healed, longer than I expected, and meanwhile more tests and waiting for results etc, but eventually I got to feel like yeh I can look at my bike again, cos I began to believe that I would get out and ride it again, and I began to walk round the house and just touch the handlebar occasionally... And now I feel so lucky - hills snow rain cold, who cares - none of that is hard! Getting through everything cancer throws at me, that is hard!! The cycling is the fun part! Riding slowly and taking it all in, yeh that's exactly what I enjoy. I love it. More than ever. Anyway. Bla bla. Long reply. Sending you best wishes! and yeh hoping you are having a good day there x

I live in Ruthin, North Wales and last August cycled from there to Cornwall and back to visit my family and friends.
That was on a gravel bike with a bivvy. I did camp but needed to stay in the odd hotel / B&B. No cooking equipment taken.
What you have done, camping, cooking and with such challenging weather, simply amazing. Lovely filming sequences as well. 😊

Wow! What stunning ride. The Llanberris pass is almost mythical, and so much climbing is involved yet you did it on the Brompton! I think my new hill climbing mantra will be, ‘if Susanna can do it so can I ‘ 😁

I watched it myself again last night and boogied to the music haha 🤣 Yep re hills and everything I was surprised myself that the exercise I have been doing was enough to manage stuff like that, cos I am not doing much just teeny slow jogs, and walking etc just sticking at it every day. I am so grateful and glad that I can do all this! basically that is it, that's my mantra! not really a mantra but you know what I mean

Yeh was brilliant doing that descent haha. Lovely that there was so little traffic too. I think it prob gets busy in the summer time on nice days etc
