It's not about you (It kinda is), but we really like you. Lots of people doing the travel blog thing, but suck at being likable. You ARE the channel, and we're all here for it.
The last store you showed was built by my uncle for my grandmother. It was "mom's this and that shop". It was then bought and turned into the general store. It is a beautiful building. It makes me sad to see it in that state. But I'm not the person with money to be able to buy at the moment. Hope it finds a new caring person. I grew up in this town and love it immensely. Thank you for the video.
I lived in Stewart when I was 10 years old, my stepfather worked in the mine. I remember we went to Hyder for New Years and our can got stuck on the way and someone picked us up in a truck, and my Sfather left the pinto on the side of the road. The party at the bar was all families, and pretty drunk parents..lol. We were all stuck at the bar for the night. One guy had a heart attacked and died that night, and they propped him up in the phone booth (i think it was a coffin??). And everyone had a shot of hyderize to honour the man… then they wrapped him up and put him on the back porch… When we got out late in the afternoon the next day, we found our car destroyed, a huge bolder had came off the cliff above and lander right on the pinto! That spring, when the airport opened, my mom booked flight out for her and us kids, and told my stepdad, “you can stay or pack up the house and meet us back in Campbell River, but the kids and I are leaving!” I have always wanted to go back.. I remember snow being higher than the telephone poles? Just found some pictures the other day…
I've been to Hyder. It was the first time I had ever stepped into a bar. Might have been that bar? I was 7. It was 1977, and I guess the rules were pretty lax back then lol
A great adventure. I am 68 and no money to travel with, so I really enjoy traveling with you. You make great videos with good content. Keep up the good work.
I absolutely agree and if only I was younger I would hitch a ride with this handsome fella anywhere. He'd have to let me of course, cause I wouldn't take no. Not hardly any men like him
Probably just missed you! We left Stewart this morning to head home to Kamloops. Eating fudge from Caroline as I watch this episode!! We chatted with her for a bit while our kids stood there patiently. Then she gave my kids a couple souvenirs for being good kids. She felt it was important to reward good behaviour and wanted them to know that it wasn’t unnoticed. It was a great gesture
The Shasta pop can brought back memories. We used to drink their pop back in the early sixties in the Lower Mainland. Hasta, Hasta to be Shasta was the jingle on the TV.
I've lived in Alaska for the last 52 years, it takes a really special type of person and mindset to live in Alaska. The weather, lack of daylight during the winter season are the things that exclude most. I'd never live in this area because you can only access it by air or by coming through Canada which is expensive because of duty fees and limits and a pain in the ass.
@RussellBond-zh9qw yeah. You're right. It does take a tough person to live in Alaska. The lack of daylight might bother me, but I've been through tough conditions and would like to see it. The other thing is that I've lived in Nebraska all my life and, at my age, don't really have that much desire to pick up and leave. Too many connections here. But I sure would like to see Alaska.
Thanks for your videos Dustin, I spent a few years there as a child as my father worked for the Granduc Mining Company and unfortunately died on one of the Salmon glacier there while working there. As a kid it was a great place to grow up for some formative years.
I own the exact same dump/plow truck you saw on the American side. I’m completely serious. I bought it at an auction and I believe they said it was originally used by Canada. Fun to see something I own lying in the trees over there.
Caroline is an absolutely brilliant human being. I learned about her from this channel and I met her once. Super talented person and thankful to have her as my friend.
I stopped at her shop in the late Eighties and bought a sticker and some fudge. I came back last summer … and bought a sticker and some fudge. She was very friendly both times.
Always a great morning watching Destination Adventure! Re: the border cut/slash - it’s maintained by the international boundary commission, a joint Canada-US venture, and they maintain the slash and boundary monuments along the entire border. They use machines when they can, but otherwise, it’s by hand.
Welcome Emi! I have to say you are an amazing young woman, out on boats, hiking through forests, just love it. So thank you and welcome here, glad to know you. Dustin, thank you again for your films, we enjoy them immensely. We believe you show us what Canada looked like many, many years ago. Take care and stay away from stinging plants!
Dustin I swear I love Saturday mornings more now then when I was a kid. Scooby doo has nothing on Destination Adventure 🤣 Thanks for making Saturdays great again 🤘
Used to be legendary fish and chips , and burgers , served out of an old bus in Hyder only a few years back. The Bear viewing walk is impressive and a 'must do' during the salmon runs.
We’ll be up there this fall and update you on your favourite boat project, Dustin. Thanks for another amazing video and tour of Stewart/Hyder. I was up there a little more than a decade ago, talking with the old owner of the bar, and that was the first year that Hyderizing was no longer done with locally brewed hooch. I don’t know what they’re using now, but he was using Everclear at the time, saying it was “almost as strong as the old stuff.” And the fish and chips bus… Can’t forget about that. It was an old transit bus that they had parked on their property about two blocks off of the main road. He would go out fishing and she would batter and cook it in there, selling to whomever came by. Last time I was there, he had caught a 400 lb halibut a day or two prior, so the pieces were big and fresh. She made the best fish and chips I have ever had. They were great to sit and eat with. It was the end of season and they weren’t very busy, so we had a nice visit. I was hoping they were still up there, but maybe not.
Not according to the fellow I spoke with. It was locally brewed and the closest he could find that was similar potency, easily accessible, and a reasonable price was Everclear. It was a bit less powerful though, from the description. Maybe it was just a story, but it was entertaining and believable, given their semi-isolation. Most of what Dustin showed in this video was still occupied at the time.
What a neat adventure of Hyder. All the old vehicles and equipment hidden in the bushes. I bet there is a lot of great stories of the history of the area. What a different border crossing . 😊
If you want to talk about old pieces of equipment you should have stopped in for a chat with my Dad. He is 83 born and raised in Stewart and worked his whole career as a mechanic and equipment operated in the area. He probably can tell you about most of the old trucks you found.
It's sad to see Hyder slowly decaying. My first trip there was years ago, and at that time there were still quite a few little shops open. There was a couple of local horses who wandered the town and would come up to you or your vehicle looking for a treat. We had one of them stick it's head right inside the truck window! The scenery is worth the trip over though!
I grew up in Hyder, I left in September of 2023. Lived there for 17 years. I met Dustin a couple years ago while he was launching to explore in the Portland canal. Love your adventures man, Keep it up!
Morning Dustin! Just when I thought I’ve seen all your videos I came across this one about the paddle wheelers! A sad grave yard of the old girls that plied the mighty water ways for thousands that seeked fortune, fame and despair , thank you once again and stay safe 👍🇨🇦

It boggles my mind how so many trucks, cars and equipment are left to erode. Makes me wonder why it couldn't have been sold off when not needed, had to be expensive at one time. Maybe just wasn't feasable. Having said that, what a great video, I really enjoyed that. Would love to see some more videos where you go into towns like this as I enjoy these types as much as the ones in the wilderness you do so well. Thank you again for a great video.
Imagine how expensive it was to get them up there when they were able to generate an income. Now the cost is much higher and they’re second grade rust buckets.
Hello again from the sunny south Okanagan where it's finally warming up. Thanks for taking us along on the tour of Hyder and allowing us to watch you and Emi get Hyderized. It's very cool that she's getting to see some of the less travelled areas of the north country. Safe travels you two.
Love these local exploration eps!... BTW... I do believe the super rad mini van truck was sporting the 'General Lee' 01on the door. gotta' appreciate that
Another amazing adventure! As many others have commented this is my Saturday morning ritual, I could spend a month there exploring. Thanks for sharing 👍
I worked near Stewart in 2013. That grocery store in Hyder was empty then. There were some beautiful old vacant buildings in Stewart as well. I ate at a newly renovated hotel and restaurant with a beautiful and friendly waitress that I still remember. Hope to return one day.
Aw yeah another ghost town. That old plow truck is super cool. What looks like either a 1987 Pontiac safari wagon or Chevy Caprice wagon just in the middle of the forest really makes you wonder about the history of the place too. As always, great work Dustin!
This episode is doing what I love! Exploring old buildings, townsites, and areas around. As always, another great video. Thank you for the adventure ❣️
Thanks Dustin, what an amazing place to see. The views of the mountains are incredible. IF you get up to Watson lake, there is a WW2 Bomber that ditched but was pulled out to the south side I believe opposite the airport.
Yet again another stellar video! The cinematography, and sound is a cut above the rest. And to top the experience a very likable host with a wonderful attitude towards everything! We should all be so lucky. Well done again my friend! Absolutely enjoy each and every video.
I love this channel, and being able to see the beauty of all the places you go. I also had a laugh at the idea of the dustination adventures haha, as my hubby is named Dustin he laughed too. Thanx for the experiences, love it!
As always a great video when I got stationed in Fairbanks AK at FT Wainwright I drove through there I believe it was 1993 and it did look a bit different with more of the businesses were open . I actually fueled up there
I love your vids as I've said many times but at the same time as loving the exploration of ghost towns, it makes me sad to see the town "ghosted". Thanks for another enjoyable Saturday view.
Much more alive when I was there in the 1990's. Makes me sad to see that things are not going good for them. Hope you had bearspray with you. Thanks for the tour.
Thank you for another excellent episode. I was in Hyder in 2007 and it looks like there is a tad more happening there now than back then. One thing I recall vividly is a house where an elderly lady (very disabled) was selling photographs of the area that she had taken herself when she was younger and fitter. She said that she had moved to Hyder from San Francisco. I guess that she has passed now, but I'd love to hear from anyone who knows anything about her story?
@TheWatcher111 Thank you. I bought a few of her photos and still have them somewhere. I was on my way up the Cassiar and onwards to the Dempster, but I wish I had stayed to chat with her for longer.
Back in 2008, my mom and I went to visit some friends who lived in Terrace, B.C. Canada. While we were there, they took us to Hyder and Salmon Glacer. However, since it was a one long day trip from Terrace and back, we did not get to explore that much of Hyder. So, needless to say, it was nice to see more of Hyder in your video. Thank you for this adventure.
Being a dual citizen, towns like this are really appealing to me. I checked the Hyder market on Zillow - 2 listings and none of them are commercial at the moment (didn't even see the general store).
I watch you every chance I get I watchbyou every Saturday and Sunday morning waking up having my coffee your show is perfect the way it is and your double that comes on now and then ha is he your Stunt double.do you pay him in food or just stick him in the space below lol lol
Mother nature seems to work fast trying to reclaim our human footprint up in the pacific northwest, but thank you for searching out what she is trying to hide. I get why you like seeing all that old iron, now knowing you once were an operator. Seeing Hyder today sure gets you thinking about what it must have been like back in the day trying to carve out a living in a remote area, and how ruggedly beautiful that area is. Thanks Dustin for bringing us along with you once again on another adventure! see you on the next one!
Hey Dustin. That whole town is there because of the mine that you drive by when you go to the glacier. It’s ascot mine now. I was working there until December so your bringing back the memories haha but ya most of that gear was most likely used at the mine and or for the route to the mine! Though I’d share that with you. If you havnt already passed the mine you should do some video of it! I was building the tailings pond dam. Sadly I never got to go to the glacier because I was the guy that was always busy running excavator lol say hi to my son mylo if you can he loves watching with me and I keep telling him that’s where I was for work

Belle petite ville comme je les aimes , belle découverte , good job

Sadly I never got to go to the glacier because I was the guy that was always busy running excavator lol say hi to my son mylo if you can he loves watching with me and I keep telling him that’s where I was for work
Thanks for the amazingly beautiful video coverage. It’s so clear and well done that I am actually travelling with you.
I stayed at the Alaska Inn back in 2018 while on a motorcycle ride from GA to AK. It was a neat town to visit.
Absolutely love to watch your videos. Always informative, interesting and respectful. You’re a fabulous person!
I found this town fascinating! Thank you for sharing!
