    Some 10 years ago I lived and trained in a little martial arts school up in Wudang, and I can totally relate with what you say. I stayed for a shorter period, just six months, but since the school was so small (only chinese disciples there, and nobody speaking english - me neither at the time!) the experience was really immersive. All the relationships, the simplicity of life, the food and the dogs (plenty of semi-wild dogs :) )...those I still miss dearly.

Felt like I was someone, I had responsibilities, helped people, had time to study scriptures, exercise, serve and teach. I miss the mission friends I made and hardly am able to keep in touch with them now. I am grateful like your journey I met my wife on my mission. You are inspiring and thanks for the videos man. Bro, you should definitely visit Shaolin Temple whenever you can, at least once a year if possible. That's your family too, you can't just cut them off after returning to Germany.
    And please do teach in Germany. You are somebody even there, but you're hiding your potential because of some reason that Germans wouldn't approve of the harsh training. Do it anyway. Those who wish to be properly trained will flock to you.

    • @vannah_04
      @vannah_04 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well it's not that simple. The temple is biased against teaching anyone outside China especially Westerners. While it's not nearly as bad as a few decades ago they still disapprove of it. But yeah I do see what you mean.

    "I felt like I was somebody, but back here I am just another citizen." this is human tribalism. after a certain amount of people, you just feel like 'another number', and every face is just some other citizen, not another human. but in a close knit community like a shaolin temple, you have more reason to be someone to everyone else in it. responsibility, I believe, is a side effect of that, not a cause.

      It's just as much a commentary on how social human nature is and how alienation in modern globalized societies is making people sick. Ponder the studies that found that schizophrenics in developing countries living with a communitarian mindset are on average not at all as paranoid and unhappy as schizophrenics from modernized countries. Paranoia is a sideffect of a mind with a tendency towards psychosis dealing with a modernized and alienating lifestyle. I had a psych counselor tell me that back in her day growing up in a small town in northern europe you knew that there was some weird people around and when you saw them doing weird stuff you accepted that its just how they are. If someone is autistic for example. People just accepted that they were a little strange or eccentric. But now everyone is afraid of getting judged by complete strangers. And you might become afraid of what people say behind your back or about what happens on the internet. I met a girl who's dad became a full blown schizophrenic after his identity was stolen online. He didn't know who knew what about him. And what other people can know about him. And who stole his identity. It's a sideffect of how alienated people are just as a member of the industrialized global community. But tribalism has to many negative connotations with chauvinism and bigotry. Call it a communitarian spirit or something instead.

    My questions, please:
    How did you “apply” to be a student in that Shaolin temple? Is it easy for a non-chinese guy to apply to study and train there for 2-5 years? Thank you

    So can you air bend now or what? Kidding.
    I've watched all of your Shaolin videos, and honestly, from the way you speak, it sounds like you are truly fulfilled when you are at the temple when contrasted with being in Germany. Just an outside perspective, I hope you're happy in whatever you do. :)

    Im a martial arts teacher and I very much enjoyed these videos about Shaolin. Thank you for posting them :)
    If I can make a suggestion about teaching the Chinese way in Germany. Teach what you feel. If its harsh for most it doesn't matter it only matters for the few that want to learn.
    Sharing the way is always the right way.

    Although my kung-fu training did not come from the Shaolin Temple like yours, it was Shaolin in origin, taught by the late Sifu Paul Eng, back in the '70's, of the Tai Mantis Kung-Fu Association. But I do know what you mean, about the energy of the training. There is a kind of, I can only describe it as "joy", one feels, practicing with one's fellow students. It is a feeling unlike any other. I'm really enjoying your channel.

    Kann man zeitweilig in einem Shaolin Tempel leben und trainieren ohne die Absicht langfristig zu bleiben, oder fällt man dann denen zur Last, die wirklich Shaolin-Mönch werden wollen?
    Du wolltest doch auch nicht in den Tempel um dort für immer zu bleiben? Ist sowas üblich?

Feels like something worthful as ive allways had a connection to meditation and Buddha ever since i was a kid. Awesome video and love the channel!! Youre amazing
