  • Michael Jai White has made two interviews where he spreads a lot of misinformation about the Shaolin temple and Shaolin Culture. It's very unfortunate to see somebody with his name recognition and his martial arts background talk about Shaolin in this way. I dont want these videos to flaot around TH-cam, without someone setting the record straight. Enjoy and Share!

Whatever it is you missed the whole point, you got mad before it even started, obviously clouding your judgement. You sound more hurt about him telling the actor to not talk about it because it's not related to you, than listening to the whole point of the video.
But I bet you would be more verbal if it's related to misinformation about your culture.
Hey, if MJW, was an expert in Chinese Culture, for sure bud. But he ain't. He has a lot of clout, people will believe what he say.
If we have an Asian or White man who is just as famous, saying shit like this too about your culture, you'd try to correct them too, and say something like that too, that they need to chill and stop acting like they're some expert, especially when they're an actor who will influence others for sure, thus some form of misinformation will spread.

@@jasonroberts6155 oh so because he put it in his bio, that makes it true? Look he may not like it but facts are facts and as previously pointed out he agrees with MJW. What he is mad at is that MJW is calling out the facts. So I can decide to be an Aztec Jaguar warrior? I personally know history professors. I can piece together history, religious beliefs and traditions. I am even the correct heritage and can easily find a correct name to adopt. It is all there to be RESURRECTED right now. If I go train with Nahuatl speaking people for 3 years, I am an Aztec Jaguar Warrior? Or as what happens with most existing religions, we, I would be a modern tribute of my ancestral traditions. Or should we allow the cartel guys who are ripping out a man's heart live peacefully because they are Aztec priest practicing their religious beliefs? I have no doubt this guy is Buddhist, have no doubt he studied at a temple that was built to an amazing degree of accuracy based on known Shaolin beliefs. But the fact is, the original temple was destroyed and he studied at a RESURRECTED temple. No matter how hard we want, how historically accurate, we can no longer become Knights Templars or Viking Berserkers or Jaguar Warriors. We would be students of history and can be based on them, but we can no longer be them.

German knights would for instance learn Ringen, very usefull to know how to grapple and wrestle so they could throw the fully armored opponent to the ground, control his limbs and maybe try to stab him with their dagger in the weaker points of the armor.
It really covers a lot of ground and i don't want to confuse you nor poison you with bad information because of my own ignorance, so if it interests you i'd advice you to look for HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) on Wikipedia.
If you want in depth historical information, you should go to the specialized Wiki on the subject, the Wiktenauer.
And of course, you always have TH-cam, but take anything you find on YT with a grain of salt because it's not very reliable, as is usually the case with easily digested information.
As you will see, there is a practitioner perspective and an academic perspective to HEMA, with a whole spectrum in between.

I do not really have a command on this specific subject but Mr. White clearly is repeating a common mistake about cultural originality. Originality doesn't mean uniqueness, it means "belonging to the origin"... when we are talking about cultures ofcourse. Apparently that snippet of culture is still alive so wherever the carriers of that culture deems the "Shaolin Temple" is, that is the original. Cultures are subject to evolution just like biology is. They adapt, get selected and even drift along. So today's temple is without doubt different from the past centuries. This does not mean it is fake. And all the political interferences must have happened in the past too.(As you have said) This culture apparently survived that too. "Purism" is a very wrong way to look at human cultures.

I think that's what MJW is referring to. The temple burning down 400 years ago is actually MJW conflating 2 periods in shaolin history. The burning of the temple in 1928, but also the attack on the temple during the Ming dynasty which was almost 400 years ago. MJW definitely has a skewed view of shaolin, but he's not factually wrong.

MJW have huge respect for Bruce. And people who knew him said he was good in street fights as well. But you really just got to read all the stuff he wrote about martial arts to understand that he most likely was an amazing fighter, not just an "actor". The guy invented Jeet Kune Do and the whole idea about MMA. He was the first who understood you need to learn the best techniques from other styles and adapt techniques into real fighting. This was a guy that was 100% devoted to master martial arts.
But what MJW was saying is that MJW is over 100kg, Bruce was 58kg. Thats a massive difference if anyone of you have been fighting. I can feel a massive advantage when im just 10kg over the opponent. The power difference is huge.

The point about townsfolk dressing up as Shaolin monks is probably true. And that's true for many temples. I went to Singapore a couple of decades ago and in their temples they had monks selling souvenirs to raise funds. They said they were helping out the temple and putting on the monk attire for the benefit of the tourists and photos etc. We nicknamed them 'business monks'. ^_^

MJW always says about how he could have gone into ufc, and how he taught ufc fichters some moves. He even said that he could beat ufc fighters (mike perry). According to him, the only reason he didnt go into ufc is bcoz the fighters are physically broken after their career and not wealthy enough.
Mjw also said he couldnt get into the police force coz he broke all kind of exam records and he had a really high iq. He claims Bruce Lee cant really fight coz he is an actor n has no real fighting experience, n yet goes on to say that he (mjw) is legit despite he himself is an actor n has never entered any real fights. He goes on to say, that he taught kimbo mma moves n regularly spars with dc n jones😒
In summary, he is just another Seagal. He carries himself n believes as though he is great n humble. His superiority complex is off the charts. Sad, coz he is already 50 years old. Usually we see these kind of behaviour in teenagers. The only thing fake here is MJW

    • @FalconWindblader
      @FalconWindblader 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

If you bother watching MJW talk about Bruce Lee, you'd know that he DIDN'T say Bruce Lee can't fight. the one thing he claims over Bruce Lee was that he could beat Bruce Lee, which ironically, would probably be true due to reasons that have to do with plain old physics more than anything else. whatever his attitude may be, you CAN'T discredit the fact that MJW is a legit martial artist. while he's clearly wonky in the head just from what we could see here alone, he's no fake when it comes to his capacity at fighting.
