      MadMaster its actually not something to worry about, people aren’t actively searching for someone to bully, nobody wants to be there. If you have some bad outfits you might be teased by your friend but not likely to get bullied. (In my experience)

      I went to schools in sweden. I and others were bullied for what we could not afford to wear. Sports and ski strips was one of the worst moments. We even ran out of school sometimes to avoid the horrible clothing moments. And in the mornings it took a lot of time to pick clothes. My parents could never afford me to choose what to wear and the wealthy kids in school always gained more popularity from other kids and even adults. Also in sweden different schools have different status. I wish we could have school uniforms in sweden and uniforms for the teachers. Some teachers even dress very inappropriate, dragning teens attention to wrong things.

    • @Jo_Wardy
      @Jo_Wardy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Clothes judging is the stupidest excuse I've ever heard. We wore whatever shoes we wanted in my public school with our school shorts or black shorts or black.long pants and school polo and no one gave a shit if you had converse vans nikes addidas air jordans or Doc martens. No one cares. Schools should only have uniforms for formal ceremonies and sport

    • @macboerTV
      @macboerTV 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Problem is in countries with really diverse people and income. Think of students whose parent cant even afford shoes. Those students would wear the same clothes for two or three days.

    • @genmea
      @genmea 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Jo_Wardy hmm in another comment section you mentioned you went to a private school did you not.
      And if you can afford to wear Converse, Adidas, Nike or Docs you are rich and privileged no one will bully you. There are children who cannot afford those brands, or any brand for that matter and can only buy the cheapest shoes available in Asda that cost £10 it's those kids that get bullied. School uniforms take away that clear distinction in status because you all have to wear black shoes with no embellishments. Wheter you spend £10 or £100 on a pair of black shoes, it's a pair of black shoes, it won't stand out like a sore thumb.

    People who wear a uniform express themselves in every other way that isn’t what clothes are on their back! For example the backpack you have, and how you decorate it with pins if you choose so, stuff in your hair, decorating your planner. Also in all high schools that I have friends at, you need to bring your own trainers for PE, so there’s one way you can express yourself *cough *cough I mean flaunt your family’s wealth with the latest designer trainers

It doesn't stop you from expressing yourself. It doesn't make you a cookie-cutter human. The arguments I used to have, with my mother, about what I wanted to wear for school, disappeared at secondary school.
    The kids who had fewer clothes were noticeable in primary school, as were the rich kids. This 'classism' disappeared, too.
    Most schools have a uniform which can be picked up very cheaply, from a supermarket.
    Uniforms get you ready, psychologically, to work; they're cheap; no-one is judging you, for what you're wearing and they cause less friction between kids and parents.

My primary school (England) used to have just grey bottoms (practically anything, I just wore felt trousers!), now they have blue shirts that have the school name on the back (weird and ugly). The PE kit used to just be a blue polo and blue shorts now it’s special and only can be bought from an expensive uniform shop. My secondary school is private but the uniform is so expensive. Only from one shop and over £100 for just the blazer. It’s comfortable though. Pro-uniform though. It makes my life easier as I can just have a few shirts, a blazer and a skirt and 3 t-shirts, a few trousers and that be my wardrobe whereas if I had to wear non-uniform I would be so lost about what to wear.

      My four brothers shared 2 grey blazers and 2 black blazers, as they progressed through the school. My fourth brother looked like an ink-spotted rag-bag! Not that he cared one jot, bless him. So, I got new blazers (I'm the youngest). Only my oldest brother and I ever got anything new.

      Shoes cost money for everyone - even 'lesser mortals' attending comprehensive schools have feet - so, scratch that one from your total.
      If you're sending your child to a school where the uniform costs £250-£300, you're obviously wealthy and/or worried that your child isn't equipped to 'make it' in the comprehensive system.

When I taught at a charter school even the teachers had to wear a uniform on trip days... and I found it so uncomfortable. I was always tugging at it, and I honestly couldn't focus because of how uncomfortable I felt. I think the big difference between my early and later uniform experiences were the options. I agree with Luke, wearing a uniform it was great to not have to think about what to wear every day (apart from mufti day lol). Esp. being a girl (just speaking for myself, not generalising) it's harder to decide what to wear and have to wear something different every day. I hated wearing uniform at the time (mostly bc I had to iron it every single week and it took forever, and bc it wasn't the most attractive/comfortable) but looking back I'm glad it was that way.
    Also, once we get to sixth form we were allowed to wear whatever we wanted, so we still got a chance to 'express' ourselves, if that makes sense. And when I did go to 6th form it did take me slightly longer to get ready bc of deciding what to wear.
    :) - I love these british vs. american debates tho! keep 'em coming!

      I'm from Michigan, and I went to a public school which are schools that don't have uniforms. You could tell from the people who tried to look nice vs me (and other people) who didn't care what we wore. Like I dressed up every day of High School for my freshmen year (1st year of HS) and after the 1st semester I realized that I hated it. I just threw on whatever was clean after that. I wanted to feel comfy in the things I chose to ware. I never got bullied for it, I figured that after 4 more years of this BS I would never see the majority of the people I graduated with anyway. I disliked most of them and I haven't seen a lot of them around bc most of us went to different colleges. So why would I care what I looked like to people who I hope never to see again.

It's a peculiar thing, wherein your lack of real life exposure to people with dyed hair just makes you feel pretty indifferent, and honestly I don't think me, or my friends, have ever really complained. I went to an American public school system in a city that required uniforms. That extended to piercings, hair, etc.
    I hated it. On top of having regular clothes already, you'd have to buy additional uniforms every year as the colors required would change and so where you used to just have a shirt that might fit for two years, you had to buy two separate shirts. You'd also have to buy a new belt if you grew as they were also required.
    My family didn't have much money, so I always wished we were allowed to wear regular clothes. Of course, you could still wear the uniform polo and pants if you wanted, but having the freedom to wear regular clothes would've saved a lot of money. Not to mention time. We'd always go out a few times before school started to hunt for uniform approved clothes in the right colors, style, and fit for various sized kids in the family. Spending money on clothes we would only wear in school before changing into regular clothes at home.
    People bullied people for other things. Getting rid of bullying over clothes doesn't do much but cause bullies to find other reasons to pick on people.
    In college, I find it pretty simple to throw on clothes in the morning and it's a much faster process than the uniform because the uniform required extra parts that aren't required for college lile belts, tucking the shirt in, etc.
    We also couldn't wear most common types of warmer clothes in the winter, so people would be written up all the time for having a hoodie or the wrong pockets or a logo that was too big when they're just wearing what they had available.
    Plus, the school's very few uniforms for accidents and such were not guaranteed to even fit you.
    It's so much simpler and cheaper now, going to college and wearing anything I want. I don't have to buy new clothes every year, I can wear most things within reason that I want, and nobody thinks you're about to shoot up the school for wearing a hoodie in the middle of winter.

At least we were actually wearing the same outfit, at the end of the day. I would have hated it if there was more difference between us because they were wearing fashionable designer outfits. They would have been unbearable and those people weren't even that bad at my second school (it would have been horrendous at my first) but the social divide would have been. I think that having a uniform is good but that students who do have a uniform should be given more freedom and choice when it comes to their uniform. For example, at my school, you can get detention for forgetting your tie or having the wrong coloured socks, which, in my opinion is more distracting because teachers are constantly having to check whether students are following the rules and students are often worried about accidentally breaking them and ending up in detention.

Same goes with school - we don't have school uniforms, but are buying "nicer clothes" for it, because you're supposed to dress appropriately for it is an official institution. But then again, you can kinda wear whatever you want - school doesn't dictate what is and isn't okay, it's you or your parents who decide.

If we want the local government to decide on a uniform, we might want to know.. Today, my daughters school decided to start enforcing dress code/school uniform. Why now? Why weren't we better informed? Now I have to go buy additional clothes? The original policy was vague. The new policy while clearer, totally caught me off guard. When did you decide this? Why weren't we notified in writing with a signature requirement earlier than today?

    I think people who haven't grown up with school uniforms, they picture that they'll feel like their freedom is taken away... but seriously, i never felt like that, never even thought about it ~ you get used to it. and especially if every school around you has the same idea.
    Plus i don't have to plan an outfit everyday xD gosh if i had to think of an outfit every single day, i would dress like a blob.

      Shynell Vaux I live in England so obviously I have and currently wear school uniform since I was idk, 4 or 5 and I've just come to love school uniform probably because I'm fashionable in the slightest and I don't have to plan what I'm wearing for five consecutive days.
      And funnily (yet weirdly enough for a bunch of 13 year olds) I've had the 'school vs non uniform' debate at school and a 'makeup vs no makeup' debate with friends (I go to an all-girls school and people still wear makeup) and have basically covered almost all the points spoken in the video (none of us knew the existence of this video though) and both sides seem valid in certain aspects. Although in hindsight, I think it's just issues with self-esteem/consciousness or simply culture affect your opinion.

      From my point of view, and I agree its depending on how your school and other schools around you dress as well, but I *never* plan out what I'm going to wear. I just look whats in my dresser and plop random things on and just wear a big sweatshirt over it. I'd like to try a uniform someday so I can experience the other side of the argument but as of now, of course I am biased but I think its nice to hear what other people have to say! :)

    (Floridian) In our school we have a uniform but class systems are determined by what brand your polo is, I love Hollister and Abercrombie if you wear those brands it still put you in a higher class than if you weren't to have a logo. So the uniforms goal to make the class system less obvious (in our school at least) makes it more prevalent.

Or if you can fit a coat on top, by the time you’ve walked to school you are sweaty and feel gross af. It’s a struggle.

      Kelli oh god the rain! You’re especially screwed when the rain is paired with a strong wind that your umbrella is not able to withstand. As an American who has gone to schools with a range of uniforms and dress codes I personally agree with uniforms being easier and an overall better experience. We were still able to accessorise for the most part although no hats was a big rule at all schools. And there’s always the worry with wearing jewellery in gym/PE because things get caught or puncture and make you bleed and that’s not fun.
    One thing I did like from certain uniform rules was when it was simply a polo shirt/button up/whatever of a certain colour and skirt/shorts/trousers of a certain style/colour because then you could just shop from a brand that you like or can afford’s uniform section.

    There are actually some public school districts here in the U.S. that require uniform. Mine did (for elementary and middle school). It wasn't a blazer or anything, it was just a polo shirt (red, white, or any shade of blue [though some schools also had green and/or black as an option]) and pants, shorts, or a skirt (khaki or navy blue). We would have dress down day once a month

  • @sandalaris

    I had both, went to a school with uniforms until I was 11 (sixth grade) and then went to a different one without after. There wasn't that much difference at the end of the day. The pros and cons of each were pretty minimal. With a uniform I didn't have to think about what I was going to wear, but it also didn't cut back on bullying or anything because people would just focus on your shoes or your backpack or your lunch. No uniform meant I didn't have to buy the expensive uniforms and I got to wear what I liked, but it also meant I had to think about what I was wearing beforehand and what you picked played in a role in how other students and teachers saw you. But all those things were fairly small annoyances/benefits.
