Great video! poor product. Mini USB...why? micro USB connectors are cheap. 2 wires...why? Use a dummy cell and solder one wire from the unit to the battery contact, then there are no wires dangling from the shell begging to pull off a solder pad. Or use two cells in parallel as other comments have described for better capacity. This whole kit just seems poorly thought out. Plain old rechargeable batteries seem like a better option. Finally, I guess I'll say it. If there really is demand for this, I'll wait for BennVenn to come up with something better. Keep up the good work. This was a very good looking and informative video!
All of my micro USB ports and cables don't have much grip to hold them in place anymore; but my couple USB mini ports and cables still have good traction. A USB C that you could plug in upside down would be better though.
I've done this, it works well. I get a ton of play time with a backlit screen too, i havent run tests but id guess around 12-14 hours before i have to charge
First! Sorry missed the last two videos. Busy bringing new baby into the world! Cool MOD.. Would be nice to have the charger indicater light hooked to the power on led! Keep the MODs coming!
Super neat mod! If you modified the terminals accordingly, do you think you could fill both battery bays and run two 14500s *in parallel* for more runtime?
Seems like it would only take slightly more work to make it so the battery compartment would be wired to take two rechargeable batteries in parallel and as far as battery indicator you could find and incorporate one but finding one small enough would be a challenge, I do like this mod it reminds me of some of the kits for converting a original GBA to be rechargeable
I agree, it totally does! I think it is possible to add another battery in parallel, I'm just not knowledgeable enough to figure out how. Hopefully an updated kit will include that feature! Adding an LED is also very doable and I am planning to make a video on it! Cheers buddy!
Why not rig it up in series to run two batteries, as the GBC was always intended? Running only one battery seems to me to only be giving you half of the overall run time otherwise possible.
Next project suggestion: Rechargeable Battery mod. Install a Lithium Ion battery pack to make it like the GBA SP. Capable of being rechargeable without AA batteries
Your modification is really great. Thanks for your demonstration. But there is still a question that the voltage of 14500 lithium battery should be 3.6V. Will it damage the machine as the voltage is over charged? I have concern about that. Also is regular AA battery allowed to use after the modification? Thanks for your reply in advance.
Just stumbled on this channel recently and your videos are great man! How do you embed your timestamps within the video player like that? I've never seen that before.
Thank man! I really appreciate that! It's really simple just copy my time stamps and paste them into your description. The formatting is important. TH-cam takes care of the rest. You just need to change the timestamps for your video. Example, 5 minutes 10 seconds is written 5:10. Let me know if you have issues. Cheers!
What about rechargeable batteries, it only trades being set up free for having to restart the console to swap out batteries. And it's cheaper. Some would argue this is better, because you don't actually have to recharge the console you can just carry around extra batteries.
Alright. Cool video, but I gotta ask if anyone has done experiments using two batteries to increase the battery capacity, adding an LED indicator or adding quick-charging or auto-shutoff capabilities to the mod?
Hi, I don't know if you'll see this, but I have suggestions on how this mod can be improved. 1] The positive terminal is removed entirely, making an entire battery compartment useless. This really bothers me for some reason. My suggestion in this case is to trim the terminal, and then solder a wire from it to the one right next to it. Then you can place it back into the shell (with maybe some kapton tape to prevent it from bridging with the contact on the board) and you can now use the second battery compartment to put in a second battery (in the same orientation as the other one) and this would double the capacity as the batteries are now in parallel. 2] That chip on the board is a charge controller. If you look up the board number, it should have a pin diagram that tells you which is for the charging indicator LEDs. If you find it, you can then probably wire it up to the GBC LED (or an additional one) to provide insight into battery/charging status. In my opinion, these are two really simple ways and effective ways to improve and perhaps even complete this mod.
Those are fantastic ideas! I'm a little nervous about adding an extra battery, however, I do plan on making a follow up video if I can figure out how to add an LED or somehow tap into the GBC's LED like you suggested! Thank you again for the comment and suggestions! Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions No problem! I can understand being nervous about the second battery (because if you put it in series instead of in parallel, you will absolutely blow the fuse), but so long as it's parallel it'll be safe. Good luck with the LED!
Batteries in parallel SHOULD work, however, I'd be concerned with parasitic draw (I think that's the correct term). Both batteries will have slightly different capacities and could result in one battery charging the other when the console is shut down. 2 batteries in a closed circuit-- could be bad news. This can be fixed by adding a couple diodes.
@@rc_matic Dropping diodes in that circuit would prevent the charger from charging the batteries, wouldn't it? Further, while the parasitic draw would have one battery charge the other, it shouldn't be a problem so long as the two batteries are the same chemistry and voltage - ie, two of the same battery.
PS3 uses them as well, and all its accessories, like the move controllers which are still used with the PS VR. Mini USB has some advantages in comparison to Micro USB, as it is rated for more insertions ... so it shouldn't wear out as fast, which is nice if you charge the GBC often
@@MrBunt if I'm charging my game boy more often than I'm charging my phone then holy crap and my phone still works perfectly fine for years later (2017 to 2021) my phone uses micro USB.
Now I'm wondering if there's a way to get the second battery terminal working with this mod for double the capacity. If that would be possible, this might be a real winner.
Hello Tito I love your videos, I'm also starting some mods ... I have a question, wouldn't you be able to use two batteries in parallel, so you have more "juice" and thus have more mAh?
Hello ifix gadget! I think it should be possible. I opted to follow the instructions per McWill just to make sure nothing went wrong for the video. I’m hoping he updates the mod to utilize both compartments and maybe update to usb c. That would be awesome! Thank you for the comment!
Thanks Jacob! Unfortunately, this mod is not compatible with the Pocket. Both the dimensions and the battery requirement I believe does not permit this kit to be installed. Would be great if McWill makes one! Cheers
Do they offer type-C or micro-B? No one uses mini-B cables anymore. And no LED?!? Great video, but as you said the cons outweigh the pro. Easier just to get some IKEA LADDA 2550 mAh batteries.
Unfortunately at the moment Mini is the only interface available. I actually did a video on adding an LED indicator to let you know when it’s done charging, I think you may like it, check it out: th-cam.com/video/J3_Fp6V8M2c/w-d-xo.html. I’m hoping McWill does and update to the design to account for these issues. Cheers buddy!
just remove the unused battery terminals in the case. and slap another rechargable battery in there.. when one runs out you can just swap it out for a charged one
I've been recently getting back into retro gaming and starting with the snes, I'm running into cartridges with aging old batteries. While the mods I've been looking up like this one are super cheap, there is also the investment into tools. Not that I'm complaining because, this might be a fun hobby to get into that could lead into a career path depending on how much I enjoy this. I went into computer repair right after High School but, I wasn't ready for college. I was a terrible student and didn't want to learn, I just wanted to live a life my way. I've always liked this kind of stuff. Now I want to ask, is there a resource I can do to do fun projects once I get all these tools? I just feel like as a guy just starting out, there's got to be other uses for all these tools.
Hey Sephiroth (great name)! This is indeed a great hobby and yes, there are other uses for these tools! I frequently use some of them, for electrical repairs on my car. Also great for computer component repairs/mods. These tools are essential if you really want to get into modding/repairing. Let me know if you have any other questions and best of luck! Cheers!
Curious with a TP4056 Board Could I charge Li-Ion AA batteries safely? Got some AA steady 1.5V batteries I want to be able to continue using as they last awhile. But also charge and play at the same time.
If you were to clip the battery terminal so it doesn't solder to the board and bridged the traditional positive and negative, could you use two of thos batteries in parallel increasing amps instead of volts for longer play time?
Is the Mcwill LCD kit required for the recharge mod to work? I'm going to be getting a Laminated Q5 screen and want to get a rechargeable battery for it. Thanks!
This is what I hate about this. Affordable, if you live in the US. In the UK it's gonna cost at least 3x more because of shipping fees, that's not even factoring in customs fees which I've had cost me £15 for a metal cartridge.
I’m having a really hard time finding a 14500 lithium polymer battery all I see is ion is that the same thing? If not where can I find one I didn’t see any even on eBay
I did this mod but my device randomly shuts off , I can’t seem to get more than an hour out of a charge and the indicator light turns on and off intermittently when it’s charging?
I go through 2 batteries every day with my BennVenn Freckleshack backlight. Would this be a good alternative instead of using batteries? Would it even work?
Yes, this mod will work with the BennVenn backlight kit! As for it being worth it, it depends on the LiPo battery you end up using. In my install I used a 680 mAH battery and only got 2 hours of playtime. I think you can get a 1300 mAH battery and that should last roughly double that. For now, I would suggest using a pair rechargeable NiMH batteries instead since you can swap them out on the fly and wait for a new kit from McWill to come out. Hope this helps. Cheers!
What voltage was the 14500 battery? And could you use two 1.5V LiPo batteries to allow for a higher capacity while still keeping it able to charge? I would assume yes as long as the batteries allow for 5V charging right? Mostly i'm curious about the voltage more than anything on the 14500 though
I believe it is 3.7v. The instructions for the kit specified the use of a 3.7 volt battery so I can’t speak to using 2 1.5v batteries. Sorry I wasn’t more helpful. Cheers!
Great question! Unfortunately, by removing the battery terminals and how the kit was designed, installing batteries in parallel was not possible. Hopefully an updated version of the kit will address this in the future! Thanks for the comment! Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions I haven't done the mod yet, but it's something I'm concerned about. I'm also considering Eneloop NiMH, but it looks like the mod is designed for a LiPo pack. Do you think Eneloop would work safely?
It's possible. I have a lab and i replaced the old port of my ds lite with a USB-c, so it will use the same charger of my galaxy s9. If you want i can sell you a pre-made motherboard with USB-c so you have only to install on you'r ds lite by replacing with you old motherboard

Thanks Princess Peach! So glad you enjoyed the video! I haven’t noticed it getting to hot, maybe just a little warm. I hope that helps! Cheers!
Amazing video as always!
Do you know if this mod is compatible with the Game Boy Pocket?
Great "hack", amazing for real!!
But me doing that wouldn't end up well haha so it's best to buy a device to charge rechargeable batteries 😋
just remove the unused battery terminals in the case. and slap another rechargable battery in there.. when one runs out you can just swap it out for a charged one
Que buen video muy entretenido felicitaciones al tío tito que es un crack :3
Gracias kenny!
Thanks!
Would it be easier to solder the wires before the board is put in place?
This is what I hate about this. Affordable, if you live in the US.
In the UK it's gonna cost at least 3x more because of shipping fees, that's not even factoring in customs fees which I've had cost me £15 for a metal cartridge.
Would it be possible, I imagine with a different wiring setup, to use both battery slots and increase the amount of play time?
gotta fix the white noise but great tutorial
Thank you John! I’ll look into the white noise. Cheers buddy!
Thank you I love it so much and if You can know how to show the battery usage
Yes, I am planning to do another mod that will show how much battery is left! Stay tuned! Cheers!
Um why is that a mini usb connector? In the thumbnail I thought that was a USBC where you didn't cut the plastic very well.
modern charging? ths is a usb standard from 15 years ago,. usb mini? i dont even have devices that use USB Micro anymore..
This is a mod for a console at least 23 years old that run on AA batteries. I think any rechargeable battery is a modern improvement
Couldn't you make it rechargeable by keeping the original AC plug? And just solder some cables on the motherboard?
You can use the empty battery slot to house a spare battery in
That’s a great idea! You absolutely can! Cheers buddy! Happy holidays!
Could this same kit work for the gbp? This is amazing.
Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions Thank you! This helped out a lot!
I think I will look for rechargeable battery pack :)
Hopefully we one, one day. That would be awesome! Cheers!
If there was a charge light indicator and it was usb c then yes!
What was the box that had the wires in it that you used?
2020, Why dont use 1.5V Li-ion recheargable batteries ?
put two batteries in parallel and double the amp/hrs
What voltage was the 14500 battery? And could you use two 1.5V LiPo batteries to allow for a higher capacity while still keeping it able to charge? I would assume yes as long as the batteries allow for 5V charging right? Mostly i'm curious about the voltage more than anything on the 14500 though
I believe it is 3.7v. The instructions for the kit specified the use of a 3.7 volt battery so I can’t speak to using 2 1.5v batteries. Sorry I wasn’t more helpful. Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions That kinda makes sense. These units run on 2.4-3V so there must be a regulator in that little charging circuit. Thanks!
You can put a spare battery in the top slot and have 2x capacity.
Haha that’s so true! I haven’t thought of that! Very neat idea, thank you dude!! Cheers Anthony!!
Have you seen a similar mod for the Gameboy Pocket?
i'd de-solder the mini and put in a micro usb, and put in more battery .
why didnt you put two batteries in parallel
Great question! Unfortunately, by removing the battery terminals and how the kit was designed, installing batteries in parallel was not possible. Hopefully an updated version of the kit will address this in the future! Thanks for the comment! Cheers!
I can't find the intro music on the linked channel. Could you please name it?
Does the McWill mod heat up when charging or if using the CGB while charging?
I think it might warm up a little. It wasn’t too noticeable to me. Is yours getting very hot?
@@MachoNachoProductions I haven't done the mod yet, but it's something I'm concerned about. I'm also considering Eneloop NiMH, but it looks like the mod is designed for a LiPo pack. Do you think Eneloop would work safely?
@@Albylion great question! Unfortunately this will not work with NiMH batteries. This mod is only for LiPo batteries. Cheers!
was wondering wouls the mcwill kit work with the battery from boxy?
Does this have over charge protection?
Hello Tito
Do you know if this kit work with a gameboy pocket?
Is it possible to replace the DS Lite's charging port with a regular micro USB or USB type c port?
I think it may be possible. I should definitely look into that. It would be cool to swap out the original charging port with a USB type c! Cheers!
It's possible. I have a lab and i replaced the old port of my ds lite with a USB-c, so it will use the same charger of my galaxy s9. If you want i can sell you a pre-made motherboard with USB-c so you have only to install on you'r ds lite by replacing with you old motherboard
Isn't that dangerous if it uses the wrong power standard?
@@axelkusanagi4139 all ds use very close to 5 volts, i've been using a homemade usb to ds cable for years.
@@axelkusanagi4139 yeah, there's potential hazard. Which is why I'm hoping some knowledgeable ones to shed some light on total beginners like me to do so.
Is it possible to add bluetooth support in the empty battery space.
Have your tried the wow stick electric screwdriver it's on Ebay for 20 dollars it helps out a ton
I actually never tried it before. I've seen a lot of modders use it. I should check it out, it could help save some time removing al those screws, haha! Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions I got it just to try it out and its amazing I used it to change some of my PC parts and change my gba macro btw the second speaker did work but it was a tight fit
Thanks
