Great video, thank you so much for sharing! I installed both the charging mod and the LED at the same time. Since the case I used is transparent, I placed the LED between the headphone jack and charging port and then cut a 90 degree elbow from a water jug lid. I then placed it in the space over the LED to act as a sort of light pipe. It diffuses the light really well and looks natural!
So excited!! Just got my freckleshack screen and installed it! All seems to be working fine and it looks great although the wait was pretty disappointing the screen was worth it!
I did the usb charging mod over the summer. The unit will no longer charge so I need to take it apart and check all the wiring to fix it. Since I'll have it apart I will definitely be adding this LED indicator.
I would desolder the USB mini and replace it with a USB C port with resistors to comply with the USB PD standard. Then add a second battery cell in the second AA slot wired in parallel with the first battery you installed. I really like your LED mod though!
Good location for the charging LED. You could probably place it near the power LED and it would cast enough light to be visible through hole in the the glass lens for the power LED.
Thank you Stephen! You read my mind! That was actually the other place I was thinking of putting it. I ended up with the speaker grill since it seemed a bit easier. Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions Ahem. I wish TH-cam notified me in a way I knew how to see.. It went pretty well, I popped the power LED off the board, and used some breadboard to make a common ground rail for the three LED'S - GB power, charging, and charged LED's and then ran the wiring up there. I did have to add some diffusing material, though, as the SMD LED's were considerably brighter than the factory LED. I've since moved over to a Boxypixel alu shell, though, so it wasn't as necessary. I did a similar mod on the GBP I put a rechargeable battery in though.
I question the people who actually want this, holding the system with a cable attached and a hefty one like a VGA would make it uncomfortable. Your just butchering the case for something that people will basically never use plus after all these upgrades it's you could go for a SNES and Gameboy player 2 for cheaper and you get controller functionality...
That was one of the locations I was contemplating, but for ease of installation I went with the speaker grill. Totally agree that aesthetically it would look way better behind the lens. Cheers!
One of the best retro modding channels out there! Period! Keep up the great videos, Tito. If I may, Id recommend that you do a video covering the GBAccelerator. Theres very few videos on it and I think a video covering features and installation would be a great resource for the community. Cheers!
Thank you Mityman64! I really appreciate that! I will definitely add that to my list of videos to do. Can't guarantee it'll be anytime soon but I do see the merit of making a video on it! Thanks for the suggestion dude! Cheers bud!
The only shame is that it uses the old mini USB, but for the price is definitely worth it, and it provides a more than decent playing time! PS. I discovered today your channel and your videos are outstanding. So clean and calm, you definitely have a new subscriber!
How about this?... the Battery mod uses a single 1.5V battery but ramps the voltage up to 3V in order to get it to the GBC Motherboard. Using 2 batteries In Parallel (instead of in Series) should double the Battery Capacity while keeping the voltage to 1.5V. Modding the contact springs to face the same way at both battery bays. Maybe cutting them and resoldering in the appropriate layout can take care of this, with little to none shell trimming.
Or you can buy any micro USB/ USB type C to any lithium battery charger board with led indicator already built in for 1-2$ a piece I bought 5 of them for $4 USD.
I've always liked your production values of these videos. What's your camera setup like? I've been wanting to set up a similar hobby type room and am trying to price things out.
Hey Yellow Jacket Guy! I have a pretty simple set up that took me several years to accumulate and get just right. I mostly use Sony cameras and glass. The A6500 and an older A7S. I am thinking of doing a tour of my mini studio as a video sometime in the future. Feel free to ask any questions about the setup. Cheers!
Their should also be different colors for the different charging levels id like to see that maybe like a 10 dollar mod kit where this is all available or an option
I've done this mod and it's a little confusing, with or without the battery inside the led light will power on when a USB is connected, I noticed if you put the battery in while the cable is already connected the led lights gets brighter, no indicator on when it's full as the led light won't turn off unless USB is disconnected.
Is it possible (in theory) to replace the mini USB port with a USB-C one, leaving everything else on the board unchanged? Or would further modifications be needed for it to work correctly?
I think I’m theory it could be possible, however it would not be straight forward since the pin out of the usb c is most likely different from the usb mini.
Hey Macho, Any reason why the led would be faintly turning on? Like it takes a second to get power from my guess, Not to familiar with whats happening here. My other mods on the gameboy are a TFT backlit display and a CleanAmp.
im thinking about a wireless rechargeable mod for my backlit gba.have you tried one of these days? another great video Tito,i was a bit late to the party but im like 49!
I’m wondering if you’ve seen the retrosix battery mods for the dmg. They have them on handheldlegend. I just got mine in the mail today and I’m excited to get it installed. I’ve heard they’re working on similar mods for the other game boys as well
Yes! The retrosix/handheldlegend battery for the DMG looks awesome! I cant wait to get my hands on one to test out! That would be really cool if they are working on some mods like this for other Game Boys! Thanks for the heads up Brian! Cheers!

@@MachoNachoProductions Yes it does, thanks! I tried to start the gameboy without a battery, because shipping takes a while. your heatshrink tube can just go right over the resistor too :)

For 840mah at 1a the battery shouldve charged in like 45-50 min which tells me the recharge board cuts the amps to 500ma while charging.

Tito! I like it man so simple and inexpensive yet improves funtionality. Is that a chip rgb led or a two color red and green one?
Thank you! It’s a super small smd led that just red in color. It works well cause it so small you could put it just about anywhere. Cheers buddy!
Oh I see. I thought I saw it turn green when it fully charged probably just my imagination👍 Good episode man!

Hello, I just did this mod and its great. I was wondering if a normal led may be used with the 1000 Ohm resistor. Its what I have.
now that there is a led charging indicator light is it possible to do something similar that the GBA does for low battery etc ?

would the same leads be soldered for this to work with the usb c kit
Can u also do a upgrade so both battery slots can be used?
I’m hoping McWill upgrades this kit so that will use both slots and maybe usb c. Fingers crossed. Cheers buddy!
I feel like a revision is needed for an LED indicator!
I am really hoping that the new revision has an LED indicator, and USB C. That would make this mod really great! Cheers!

Wow, I need to learn how to do this.

Macho Nacho Productions No worries my dude and thank you!
I wonder if there is a way to wire into the power LED, and use that to indicate when charging has completed

@@MachoNachoProductionsusing the power LED, USB C, and your mention of using both battery bays would be perfection!
Hey man, couldn't you soldering the two parts of batteries, but in parallel, sou the amperage would make it last double time?
Thank you!
That’s a great question! I’m not 100% sure. It would be great to have 2 batteries in there though. Cheers George!
Could you somehow replace the power LED with the charging LED?
I think it’s definitely possible. That would be a really cool way to show charging! Cheers!
Why didn't you just trim out the excess wires?
Would it be possible to use the motherboard's power LED instead of a installing a separate LED for charging?
That would be so awesome! I am not sure if it's possible. If it is, that would be the ultimate way to have an LED indicator. Cheers!
Did you consider modding the original charging mod to use two batteries in parallel to double runtime?
I did! I think that would be cool! I’m hoping McWill updates his kit so it can run 2 batteries in parallel so I don’t have to, haha! Cheers!
Off topic here. Are dmg battery packs repairable? I have one that wont hold a charge, can the batteries inside be replaced?
I’m almost certain it can be, although I am not 100% sure how to do it. It would make for a cool mod/restoration project! Cheers Joey!
