I have a box of gun accessories that I regret purchasing and hopefully Jack’s insights will help the box stay the same size and not grow. Well done video.
For beginners like me and who this video is designed for, It would be very helpful for experts like yourselves to recommend specific brands (in all categories) and provide links to products so that many of these issues can be avoided
If you are a armed officer or new to ccw, carry, guns(personal defense) I say stick to the common main brands: S&W, Glock, SIG Sauer, HK, Walther. Get well made, quality holsters/gear: Safariland, Galco, Don Hume, 5.11.
@@DavidLLambertmobile I second all of that, and I’d add Beretta and CZ for pistols; ANR Design for holsters; and Surefire/Streamlight for pistol lights (although O-Light and InForce pistol lights have both worked for me); Trijicon and AimPoint for red dots (I’ve also never had an issue with my Burris dots or my Swampfox dots). For optics and flashlights, you should spend more on those two things than your pistol. I’d rather have a Glock 19 with a Trijicon and a Streamlight than a SIG Legion series P226 or P320 and an “Amazon special” $30 light and a $100 Bushnell red dot (or a Holosun).
@DavidLLambertmobile I would probably add Springfiekd Armory and FN to that list. Can't really go too wrong with any of those brands, so just try out different models and then get the one that works best with your hand, since everyone's hands are different.😊
@travisminton2141 I myself would NOT use FN America aka FNH. The firm has a few popular rifles & military 🪖 style weapons but pistols, police-ccw-defense? That's been hit & miss; 2010s 2020s. The FN line- FNS was so bad police depts, LE units quit using them. 🚫 . LAPD picked the MRD 509 9mm but a few had problems. Glocks were in use under Chief Bratton & very popular. Glock 21s, 22s, 17-34-19s.
These are absolutely the best videos. Just two knowledgeable dudes sitting around and shooting the "no bullshit". This conversation alone clarified about twenty things I'd been wondering about for some time. More, please.
Great video! Answered the questions I would have asked without getting too technical. The knowledge and info from Jack Daniel was clear cut and to the point, which I like. This definitely needs to be a series.
i'd actually be super interested to see actual failure rate stats from these classes. like "in classes this quarter we had 200 of this particular product and 8 of them failed" is much better data than "one broke every week." getting real failure rates from field use would be an incredible useful data point.
I've done many classes at other places and it seems that about 25-30% of the new people will have their gun go down, with another 25-30% of those having some kind of day-ending breakage. Fortunately, I bring a full tool kit, extra parts, and extra guns. Classes with people I know to have experience doing classes almost never have equipment problems. They're dialed in. Key lessons for gun class: 1) Running your equipment hard in class will reveal deficiencies. 2) Always, always take 2 or more guns. 3) Make sure you're not taking crappy guns to class. 4) Make sure ALL the guns you take to class are sighted in BEFORE you get there. 5) Take a cleaning kit, bore snake, cleaning rod, and lube. 6) Mags and ammo. Take lots of both. Show up with your mags already loaded. 7) Don't forget the other stuff: appropriate clothing, water, snackies, sunscreen, and a camp chair. 8) If you're going to take pictures, realize there are some of us there that don't want to be photographed, much less be on the internet with our guns. Call it paranoia. Bonus lesson: take your Taurus, modified Glock, or cheap AR-15. Throw it in a lake. Don't take them to class. That crap never runs right. I've seen it time and time again.
Sig, didn’t take care of the guy your buddy did. I’ve dealt with Sig and if you break it they won’t help you for free. And they definitely aren’t sending it next day air.
Sig has been in a decline for years. Despite what people claim there absolutely is a difference between Sig USA and the Swiss/German produced products. Take a look at the Swiss made 550s and the New Hampshire made 550s and it's apparent.
@@levistrauss5378 Almost like they realized they could stop trying when they realized they could jack the prices up on mediocre product and the government/idiots will gladly shell out for it because "premium!"

As a retired weapons trainer for the largest sheriff’s department in America, this guy is absolutely correct about the importance of quality parts and what we have seen with failures and the crap that people want to hang on guns. Good video!
I've run Streamlights, Cloud Defensives, and Olights out of curiosity. The switches on my HLXs, three of them, have all died, but the clicky buttons work great. The Olights are somehow fine, the Javelot is weirdly brighter than my Rein 1.0 and 2.0 lights, but their mounts are just garbage. They're perfectly fine for indoor use, I haven't run them particularly hard. The Clouds are absolute tanks all around though- no regrets about those purchases even with how god awfully expensive WMLs can be and plus, they're an Indiana company. Gotta support the homestate.
I have half a dozen Olights on pistols, rifles, and shotguns. It's been about 5 years and I haven't had any failures. Lights, switches, batteries, mounts, etc all still just fine. Granted, I don't run them hard but I have a limited budget for accessories.
Growing up in a family of Georgia Tech-trained Engineers taught me that metallurgy matters. That knock-off aluminum adaptor plate for your Trijicon RMR will *not* hold up like the steel one from the factory, nor will it let you torque the fasteners properly. Like J.D. said, get the factory plate.
Sigs customer service is awful. You have a good friend who went out of his way to get you that optic overnight. They have told many of the customers that they are SOL or to cough up $$$ for a replacement of the same thing thats broken/dysfunctional.
They replaced my Romeo 4m that had an electronics issue. They sent me a Romeo 4t as a replacement as they had just discontinued the 4m line. All for free with an email and shipping label. Maybe I got lucky?
They fixed all my optics, relooked and torqued down my lt when the issue first arose even included torque specs that weren't in the instructions because they were printed too soon. Sent me 3 paper instructions when I said I hated pdf versions. Nothing but happy things with me and with the LT sent me an extra bolt assy and firing pin in my bcm grip.
Garbage company with, like, 2 good guns and no good optics. Imagine needing to send your optic in or get a replacement instead of just buying a Trijicon or an Aimpoint like an adult.
Please make more of these! Interview more trainers whobhave pics of weapon product failure so us regular people: 1. Know what potential failure points are products have and ar what rates. 2. Let us know what to change out or spare parts ro buy for preventative maintenance.
I just got my Ruger SFAR (first time rifle owner) and insights like these are very important to get things right the first time. I don't want to be working with my budget minded accessories and find I got what I paid for. Thanks for taking the time to share.
I can't say I've ever seen a more informational jam packed video with raw unfiltered experienced issues be it derogatory or positive praise given in less than 30 minutes. Damn that was good.
I've had 2 Holosun 507C's, both with zero issues over many thousands of rounds. Now using a Holosun EPS, had the battery tray back out and yeet battery tray screw into the ether. Bought replacement form TacRig which appears to be better quality, used Loctite to reinstall.
Big rookie mistake, new gun owner: buying off brands or lower end brand models then think 1000s of gear, holsters will fly out. Even well made lines like VP9s, PDPs often lack gear-holsters.
Too many people drop thousands on hardware and have almost no ammo on hand. What worries me isn't the guy who spent $4k each on 20 guns - what worries me is the guy who spent $400 on a "bad" gun and has since put several thousand rounds through it, making frequent range trips to stay in practice.
The takeaway I get from these types of video's is don't buy into the latest hype, and simple and rugged tends to stay that way longer than not. And I love at the beginning when he said everything breaks, so Very true. For the life of me I just don't understand the desire for cheap sights whether they're optic or 'irons'. Sights like the plastic backup sights by (Any Company Name Here) are just a big NO for me. My two favorites for flip ups / back ups have been Midwest Industries and A.R.M.S. , and for QR optic mounts I really like LaRue Tactical.
Went straight to the website and I " really NEED " to get my behind to the Ranch and get back into shooting medium/long range shooting. Love the easy course info on the site. Greetings from ICELAND 🇮🇸
Why does no one talk about EOTech anymore? I know there are a ton of Chinese counterfeit ones that people have done reviews on, blaming EOTech when it was never their product. I've had mine for 15 years, uses AA batteries, zero issues ever.
$500 pdw stock, $300 trigger, $200 buffer, $60 safety selector, $150 lpk, $400 lower plus im sure some sort of titanium go fast stuff all over and shipping of parts he's probably close to that much into the lower
@@stevem4783 I know that. What I’m saying is: Why would you spend $2000 on what looked like a regular lower with a weird buffer when the most advanced lower on the market that is incredibly light only costs $1500?
That’s the way to go after primary arms dropped the 🔥 prisms I’m not sure why anyone would buy anything else after that your failsafe is in the optic and there very solidly priced
Yes ! The place I work, we use a lot of small screws, (M3, M4 & M5). We easily go through a few hundred each week on our tooling. But then, someone in the front office got the bright idea of sourcing chinesium screws to lower the cost and the failure rate instantly exploded. We went back to our original supplier within a month. Cheap hardware makes expensive fails.
I like my Beretta 92F. It has target sites mounted and shoot very well. My opinion is that if I could afford to go to Thunder Ranch, I would bring it and the Glocks I own. Just a fun gun to shoot but it is heavy as hell.
in fairness to the Olight, if you don't lock the light or the tape switch cap, they will fall off. If you have people who can't even mount optics/back up sights on their gun right, it's not a stretch to imagine they would not know/think to secure their light. I have had Surefire scout light pressure pads come loose at the light just under recoil. It's actually pretty common and people just suggest spending another $100-200 on aftermarket stuff to fix it.. Same for Streamlights. The HL-X with the plugable pressure pad is TRASH.
I've been totally happy with my Olights. I'm not particularly hard on them and I have no doubt that extremely and sure fire are better... But there's a limited amount of cash that I'm willing to dole out for accessories.
I recently bought an olight to try it out, alternative to my sure fire only because battery on my sure fire is a bit lack luster. Im trying to see what’s wrong with olight? Lol

I thought this was gonna be a sucky video. But I was wrong, very good info and candid talk. And I had to replace the Glock factory plate due to screw sheering off.
I hate to say this, but I might be leaving the Glock gang for S&W for EDC. I’ve been so impressed with the ported S&W Performance Center M&P Shield M2.0 that my wife picked out for EDC and my S&W 5.7 that I’ve been plinking with that I’m strongly considering picking up one of the new Performance Center M&P 2.0s. Out of the box, I feel they are way better than my Glocks have been.
Living vicariously through you James as I can't afford the entry price for Thunder Ranch! But all things being equal I'm not a Lawyer either lol!! Love the fact that you share great stories and Ideas with us common folk!!

It’s always great to hear from the guys at Thunder ranch. They run their guns hard so it’s nice of them to provide insight on their experiences on the range with guns & firearm accessories. Can’t wait for Vol 2
I wish i could make every person that argues about cost and quality sit down and watch this video. I expected another video with the same stuff everyone talks about. You guys got REALLY in depth on failure points and equipment failures that not alot of people talk about, or experience until they RUN their gear. I dont get to train as hard or as often as id like, but i still chose quality equipment that has been vetted and proven by users such as yourself, who have hands on experience with common, and not so common failures.
A Fix-It Stick* and a paint pen solve a lot of problems. Proper install is key to making sure parts and accessories stay on. *or your personal preference. I like the Fix-It Stick but other quality torque wrenches are available

@@wheelguns4wheelmen802 For holsters, I'd add in JM Custom Kydex, Dark Star Gear, Tenicor, Phlster, and Henry Holsters. Lots of solid options.
@DavidLLambertmobile
I would probably add Springfiekd Armory and FN to that list.
Superb. Really appreciate seeing honest, unfiltered views from people who have seen a ton of gear come through.

Bob Gaudio, dudes!
Every class that I've seen a Kel Tec KSG, they had some kind of issue. I've seen the single tube version that ran smoothly. That's all the info I got.
If only they cared enough to keep track of such things but they're forced to carry about what makes them the most money instead ...
Key lessons for gun class:
1) Running your equipment hard in class will reveal deficiencies.
I must say, this is one of the best videos I've seen this year. A very candid and straightforward video. No jaded marketing BS. Keep'm coming!
Sig, didn’t take care of the guy your buddy did. I’ve dealt with Sig and if you break it they won’t help you for free. And they definitely aren’t sending it next day air.
Yeah, sig is dogshit.
100% this. Sig doesn't help you with shit if you're just a regular dude.
Sig is horrible. QC has taken a back seat thanks to those fat daddy warbux contracts
Really good interview. Appreciated the no bs.
Absolutely solid, and please do follow-up (pt2, 3...) videos. This was killer info. Thank you for the invite (felt like we were there with you). God bless and happy Easter.
As a retired weapons trainer for the largest sheriff’s department in America, this guy is absolutely correct about the importance of quality parts and what we have seen with failures and the crap that people want to hang on guns. Good video!
That noveske forward assist fail was HILARIOUS to me 😂😂😂😂. How does a $2000+ rifles sh*t just fall off?

@DigitalApex Where was the device made that you’re typing on?
Growing up in a family of Georgia Tech-trained Engineers taught me that metallurgy matters. That knock-off aluminum adaptor plate for your Trijicon RMR will *not* hold up like the steel one from the factory, nor will it let you torque the fasteners properly. Like J.D. said, get the factory plate.
Trijicon is God tier.
@@dogevanzandt2889 Exactly. Don’t use a US$8.99 Amazon adaptor plate for it on your CZ Shadow 2 Optic Ready. Just wait until CZ restocks.

@@spec8473humans love to focus on the negative my friend
@@spec8473 hm, that's good to hear.
Great stuff. Love the no bs takes from someone who knows what works and what don’t.

I truly appreciate your candidness and telling it like it is. This is refreshing in this day and age of videos. Thank you!
Great conversation and info !
Always appreciate Jack’s insight, his sample size of seeing real issues is what makes me truly listen and take heed.
This was awesome, looking forward to round two.
But I have no idea how to buy a quality set of screws for the various bits I tack onto a firearm
I've had 2 Holosun 507C's, both with zero issues over many thousands of rounds. Now using a Holosun EPS, had the battery tray back out and yeet battery tray screw into the ether. Bought replacement form TacRig which appears to be better quality, used Loctite to reinstall.
Biggest mistake as a gun owner: not training with your weapon.
Big rookie mistake, new gun owner: buying off brands or lower end brand models then think 1000s of gear, holsters will fly out. Even well made lines like VP9s, PDPs often lack gear-holsters.
@@DavidLLambertmobile 80% of my reason for owning a boring ass glock is that anything worth using is made for a glock
Word!!

Great content and excellent advise.
I've had TWO Streamlights fail to work properly straight out of the box. That was in a 5 year period.
Lol
