Here's How The 2021 Toyota Sienna Beats All Other Minivans - Limited Hybrid AWD Review

  • The 2021 Toyota Sienna is all new. The exterior has received a bold new design while the interior looks a lot more like their other cars and SUVs. The powertrain is also new in that it is only offered in a hybrid powertrain. The example I reviewed is the Limited AWD trim, so it also has an extra electric motor that drives the rear axle. Overall, the redesigned Toyota Sienna is an impressive package, and is worth to be on your test drive list, considering it has a very good mileage rating.

You're the only Sienna reviewer that mentioned the hybrid PSD (power split device) instead of calling it a CVT. I think a lot of people associate CVTs with the traditional belt-driven system, so thank you for being accurate.

Great review. My only negative is that the middle seats are not removable. I once owned a Mazda MPV and removed the middle seat to fit my flat bottom boat in it. More than half would fit in with the rest sticking out back. I just tied it down and put all camping gear to weight it down to keep it stable. Any way, with this Sienna, the middle seat is not removable. But the van might be long enough still with the middle seat pushed as far forward to fit the boat.

That's great car but I don't understand this lost space between the front seats.... wouldn't it be better to leave a space between and install swivel front seats? then it would be better access to children from behind or just a better weekend car where you could comfortably move around inside during a stop. Another thing I don't understand is low vehicle suspension why ?? it is AWD! So in my opinion the car should be suspended higher to make it more functional and give the opportunity for weekend trips on gravel or forest roads

I think it's just how the calculate it depending on where the second row sits. they'll say second have lots of leg room, but then that would mean it was pushed back and therefore have less space behind it. The second row seats on the sienna are also huge compared to the pacifica, so it takes up more space.

We fine the front seats to be poor at best. I know some others have past on the 2021 Sienna because they hated the front seats. Basically, the seats are no where near what one would like to see in a $50k vehicle. They go back and forth, up and down and the seat back tilts. No tipping the front down or lifting rear of the seat up without lift the whole seat.

    • @randomnessoftheunassuming
      @randomnessoftheunassuming 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Even my 2005 Nissan Sentra has seats that tilt. 😳 That's a pity, I've been really considering this van as my next vehicle, and as someone who's short, the seat tilt can make such a difference.

Have had my XLE for a week now. Love the vehicle. My wife and I have handicap accessibility needs and the lower platform makes it very easy to get in and out of as well as put in walkers and wheelchair. It drives great and electronic gizmos work well and provide lots of convenience. One of the biggest complaints here is that if you want a spare tire it is an "option". It is rather hard to find a unit with the spare "option". My vehicle does not have the spare built in and so far the only solution (according to my local Toyota dealer) is to purchase a tire and rim (for a full spare the cost would be a mere $750+ (lol) and somehow put it into the back or some how MacGyver it with bungie cords ...not much of an option. No retrofit kit yet but I am going to bet some inventive person will come up with an aftermarket solution to get a tire in there. The salesperson explained all of the "important and practical reasons" the spare is being eliminated (or made optional) from several Toyota models, but they all sounded like rationalizations to me! I think in a few years - after folks start complaining about problems with the vaulted "Roadside Assistance" and the need to shell out a mess of money on the spot during a flat to purchase a new tire and rim (if you can find one at 1:30AM in the dead of winter in the middle of no-where) or when "they got ya in a bad spot" and the "mere $750" price tag goes up substantially just-because your desperate - the engineer suits at Toyota will realize they creased an Edselesque feature and figure out how to get the spare in there as a needed and essential part of a car.

Toyota really needs to offer a plug-in hybrid version, ie, “Sienna Prime”. With the larger battery and more power it would be quicker, quieter (since the gas engine does not have to run as much), and get even better MPG. I would wait for a Prime version.

Regarding power, one shouldn't look at the peak horsepower to make a judgment on how responsive the acceleration will be in everyday driving. The 2.5 liter Toyota hybrids have great acceleration in the 1500 rpm to 4000 rpm range whereas the other minivans you need to rev up to over 6000 rpm to tap their full power, and how often do most minivans drivers do that? Also other minivans take a while to drop 2 gears before charging forward, by then it's often too late.

Also, the interior materials felt cheap even though I test drove the limited version. I have owned 2000, 2007, 2008 & 2011 and now I went with a suv because I was so disappointed with the driving experience with this one. Why get rid of the V6 when it was such a good engine?!

This hybrid’s AWD system is going to be limited to what the rear electric motor can do, so a Subaru’s symmetrical awd system is going to be a lot better, if the road surfaces are awful, like a beach. For wet roads and the occasional snow, the Toyota’s Hybrid awd is gonna be just fine.

Second row seats are not removable. Deal killer! The utility of this van is gone when you can't haul a 4x8 sheet of plywood or drywall. Get rid of that center console and follow Kia's lead with a design like they have for a third seat in the 1st row. Now that's a useful feature.

Why i bought Mercedes Metris over Sienna:
    1) Sienna has one of the worst seat and I get backache after 3 hours. Mercedes has the best seat comfort for long drives
    2) Sienna front seats don't swivel.
    3) Metris is a much safer car.
    4) Easy to convert Metris to mini camper.
    5) You can't remove the Siennas middle seats, if you do, Toyota voids your entire warranty. You can on older Siennas up to 2020 model years.
