This advice is excellent for people who don't even have chronic illness. Everyone can benefit from self care. Your family should understand.

I had the exact same thought. It's very hard to be good to ourselves sometimes. Thankfully, I managed to slowly improve my self care starting in my early twenties:-)👍 Awesome advice, Jacqui! :)

@@philima same, took me til early 20's...and had chronic illnesses since 13 or 14...when became apparent how sick I was. Gotta listen to the body & practice self-care. Also hard when have to ignore discomforts. Basically gotta know when to listen & when to somewhat ignore lol.

12 with a VERY bad case of Tourett's syndrome. not going to go into detail because the list of all my tics is looooong. but like some chronic illnesses it makes you very tired because tics are exhausting. and the more tired you get the worse the tics get. see, its an endless cycle.😴

It really p..... me off when family or when I hear of families not understanding or wanting to understand stuff like this. But I'm glad for you Jaquie that your family is trying to be understanding. Families should understand and should have your back not only in times like this, but have your back all the time..... ☮️

Happy Thanksgiving Jaquie to you and your family! A suggestion I have is to take breaks. Today I had a rough day, But I still was able to help my mom get dinner ready, and spend time with family but I also excused myself a few times to lay down in bed for a few minutes. Not all of my family is supportive and understanding of my health, But I'm thankful for the one's who are.

Managing the holidays is a nightmare when bedbound with severe malnutrition Gastroparesis flare for a year so weak at 22% weightloss in 5 mths and the UK NHS won’t help me.. I’ve also had to re-apply for disability so I have no finances at all this year and being a single mum my kids won’t be getting anything this year feel dreadful for them but nothing I can do.. sending you lots of love from the other side of the pond the UK 🇬🇧❤️❤️

I love spending Christmas and new years eve with my family.. Mostly I like spending new years eve with them cause we shoot up fireworks (don't live in U.S.) people will do that for 30 minutes to an hour or even longer! But my favourite Christmas was few years ago when I and my parents went on a two week vacation over Christmas, there were no cleaning, cooking (went out to eat 3 corse meal) and then just back to the hotel and relaxed :) Would love to do that agin but some family members got mad and upset that they where not invited on the vacation or that we didn't have Christmas together.....

So true to struggle trying to keep up, you are so right, reassessing for a real view on what to do.Naps are great. Great you have a loving family, praying for everyone to have those to help. You are right again, kind is good, when we start with ourselves we can then be kinder to others. We used to do Christmas Eve night too as well as on Christmas Day, so on the Eve we do it earlier like 4 in the afternoon and get to bed with movies and sleep. Then on the Day we wake up late and do something in the afternoon but also hang in the evening. Great tips so glad you share, makes me think too. Blessings to you all, stay strong as you can.

Baked a small turkey and tried to make this an easy meal for today but autoimmune fatigue and headache plus fighting sore throat...it has all caught up with me. Tomorrow to grocery store and cooking for our Saturday Thanksgiving get together with hubby's family. Just praying I can hold up thru it all. 😧

I took a big nap after Thanksgiving lunch/dinner for about three hours since I went home not feeling well and it helped so much. Honestly if I feel exhausted on Christmas I'll do the same thing and that helps when my POTS flares up.

    I have a HUGE tip!
So I send an email to all family members before the holidays, updating them on my health. I also add in the email that I can't wait to see them, but I would prefer not to talk about my health on the day because it's exhausting having to repeat and update everyone in person and individually. I add that I may need to rest, but that I will still check in and visit with loved ones.
I have a massive family, and although they are incredibly caring and have them best intentions, sometimes its just too exhausting and overwhelming to repeat and share constantly.
This works WONDERS and has massively improved my ability to get through the holidays! I am cheering for you all!

I’m actually spending thanksgiving with my fiancé’s family this year... they are very different from my family and do a day long thanksgiving and then the day after they go to a huge gym and play a bunch of sports together... I have both POTS and EDS so as you know it’s almost impossible to do a two day event let alone going to the gym. So I told him I could only go to one single event and take it easy. I hate not being able to do the things that I want. I also don’t want to be judged for not going. It’s a constant struggle. Plus I have Black Friday shopping to do so I’m really trying to figure out how I’m going to get through this without overdoing it. Chronic illness is such a constant fight

    Hi Jaquie,
I couldn’t of said it better myself about the part when dealing with positive and negative family members when it comes to someone’s chronic illness and or disability. We have to be kind to ourselves and we have to be understanding of ourselves, except ourselves in that moment in how we feel. Happy Thanksgiving to you, Judd, Harlow and Fam. Y’all been a great support to me thank you for making videos. I’m glad I’m not alone in the way I feel.

I always have an issue with my family not understanding and/or not willing to understand my chronic illnesses both mental and physical. All I’ve found I can really do after years of trying is to just do what I can, don’t do what I can’t, don’t try and push myself to please others (that’s really hard for me), and to just essentially not listen to or care about my families criticism 😅

Thanks for posting this, it's very encouraging. I've always loved this time of year and I've grown to enjoy Thanksgiving more and more as time has gone on...then I got sick. xD Most of my health problems are gastrointestinal so this time of year is murder on my gut. In general, I've formed a rule of 'one rich thing a day' if that depending on how I'm doing. Thanksgiving/Christmas day themselves are my exceptions and I generally feel pretty awful afterwards. It's just how it is, I can deal with it.
As for pacing myself? I have a hard time with that. |D I love baking/cooking/helping with making all the delicious foods that everyone can enjoy. My family are my biggest supporters and often are the ones helping me pace during this time, usually telling me I've done enough and to go sit down, even if I really want to keep going. I'm usually okay at pacing myself but this time of year makes it much, much harder 'cause I wanna help 'cause it's fun! They're really gracious and we can come up with compromises so I can keep helping without pushing too hard.

Was supposed to go to families on Tuesday for thanksgiving but messed up on upping my one med I did it too fast instead of adding one then in a couple of weeks adding the second so my body freaked out on me so I decided not to go and I’m kinda glad I did cause my mom said there was way to many people there. Today we are doing a small thanksgiving I’m feeling much better finally. Not sure about Christmas yet was supposed to go to Cali but didn’t realize I’d be on the road during finals so rescheduled that and now I’m taking a winter class that counts towards spring semester. I just wanna say I am thankful for your videos if it wasn’t for you I don’t think I would of become my own advocate and fought to get to Mayo Clinic it’s because of going there and changing things in my life that I am feeling better everyday and am able to be doing online classes and hopefully eventually be able to do classes on campus

That’s one of the hardest things to do as a chronic warrior - learning to let yourself do what you need to do to make yourself comfortable. Like making others aware of limitations or needs. Acknowledging we must consider our own needs or wants without feeling bad about it. And so on. But it’s the best way to make everything in your life more enjoyable.
I’ve been a chronic pain warrior since Christmas Eve 2000 when I was hit head on, on the highway, by a drunk driver. I’m happy to be alive and be here to see my family grow and succeed. Limitations and restrictions are a must for quality and quantity of good life!
