    Good luck with earning your degree! You can do it. :)
    It was nice to hear someone acknowledge how hard it can be to be sick and in college. I have severe depression and anxiety, so going to college was quite difficult. I wish my college had been more helpful to students with mental health disorders.

    I love how you said it’s not slower or faster but your pace and it helped you not be so frustrated. I have a master teaching certificate in early childhood education and because of some learning disability and chronic illness I have it took me 5-6 years instead of the normal 3 but that’s okay! Sadly I can’t currently use my degree because working with children is too risky to my immune system but I hope to someday go back to it or maybe tutor online

    Hey Jaquie! My name is Bridgette Flannery and I am part of the Western Wayne Marching Band in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Our marching band is going down to Disney World in Orlando, Florida from January 30th to February 2nd. We will be marching down Main Street, USA on February 1st with the parade. I know of many people in the band who would LOVE to meet you, including myself. A friend of mine and I have been watching you for years and are inspired by your story. We are so happy with the recent progress you have made and we would love to congratulate you in person. I know you and Judd have been looking for a house and your medical problems spike at random times, but I am taking the one in a million chance that you will read this and possible meet us at Disney😊

    I'm looking at 5 yrs for my degree instead of the "normal" 4 yrs. It's so important to remember that everyone is on their own schedule and that everyone is going through their own challenges. Unfortunately, I've had situations where professors present bias towards students with a disability (particularly invisible illness) and that's taken an emotional toll. You're such an inspiration and thanks Jaquie for sharing your experience, you're killing it! :)

    • @ashleywinter6217
      @ashleywinter6217 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@katebruce3328 thanks for sharing! if your college has a disability resource center and someone to advocate for you, I would highly suggest speaking with them and having them speak with the professors. Sometimes all it takes is one letter or phone call about what constitutes policies surrounding disability/the law and they will abide by school policy, which I would assume isn't requiring a person with a disability to provide a doctor's note. It can be overwhelming trying to figure everything out on your own, especially when it's the professor creating a problem. Sending love!

    • @ashleywinter6217
      @ashleywinter6217 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@analarson2920 thanks ana! you are totally right. It can be exhausting having to go through the wringer (almost) every time to reinforce disability policies with each new professor, especially regarding invisible illnesses and them feeling entitled to knowing information surrounding disability (which is illegal btw). Fortunately, I'm so thankful that I know have a professional disability advocate on campus that is helping me with all of this now, but you are so right that we as students are paying their salary and that we can demand for what's right.

    I'm a professor and I commend you, Jacquie, for being proactive with your online instructors about your health and needed accomodatations. You are a great self-advocate! Thank you for this video. It makes me think about each individual student with a disability that I've had in class and the students I will have in the future. And how to better welcome them and reach out to talk individually about accomodations.

    Yay Jacquie! I'm so happy for you! We got this!
    I left university to go to be closer to family. After my health began to improve, I started community college classes (about the same time as you). I started at 5 credits, then 7 credits and this semester I'm taking 11 credits! They're all online and I try to attend one in person once a week. I'm kind of nervous but love seeing that you're in the same boat and don't let health challenges hold you back from your educational aspirations. Thanks for the motivation!

    When I started my current degree I was undiagnosed and struggling a lot with my health, and I started out taking only 1 or 2 classes per semester. Even with relatively few academic responsibilities I had to fight my way through tooth and nail and those early semesters while very symptomatic were the hardest. Now after 6 long years I'm doing much better, have been taking classes full-time for quite awhile, and am scheduled to graduate in May!! At the beginning I almost couldn't imagine getting to this point. If you're struggling don't give up hope that it will get better, and remember that any progress moves you forward--keep pushing on and you'll eventually get somewhere. I'm rooting for Jaquie and everyone else as they achieve their dreams at the pace that is right for them. You can do it!!!

    It doesn’t matter how long it takes to get a degree so long as you work on getting there and finishing. It took me 6 years to complete a 2 year degree due to financial reasons but I did it. I had started on my bachelors degree and it’s been 10 years but plan on going back in the fall full time fingers crossed in a year and a half should be finished.

    Hi Jacquie, I’m a senior communication major (health sciences concentration, Administration of Justice minor) at the University of Pittsburgh (last semester, woohoo!). We share so many diagnoses, it’s pretty incredible. My 30+ chronic conditions have made my degree take 5 years to earn (and at times, I never thought I’d get to this point), but I did get to do some pretty incredible research on rare diseases. I’m almost at the finish line ready to graduate Summa Cum Laude after 60+ hospitalizations lasting a week or more. My philosophy has always been it doesn’t matter how slow I go, as long as I’m putting my health first. I’ve managed to take at least 7 credits every semester, but that was HUGE for me when I was sicker than I am now. I’m so thankful that I’ve made it this far and I’m excited to finish. Cheering you on from Pitt!!! 💙💛💙💛

    Congratulations! I only have 8 classes left to finish my BA. School is rocky for me at the best of times, but then three years ago my mental health took a huge downturn and I had to drop out. Soon after I was diagnosed with autism, which has helped me understand myself better. Now when I go back to school I will be able to have some accommodations. I don't know when that will be because I've started a business, which I'm also struggling with. But I'm trying really hard to push myself, I just need to take it slow. Like you said, different does not mean worse.

    I'm currently in my second semester of my freshman year of college. I always dreamed of going out of state for school, but ended up staying and home and going to the local state university bc of money, so hearing you talk about how things may not always go how you planned and how that's okay really resonated with me. I'm also double majoring (political science and international studies!!) with a goal to graduate in 4 years, while also dealing with an anxiety disorder and various things relating to that and being out and proud to be transgender without my old support network of friends, so sometimes school can be tough, but I really enjoyed what you said in this. Its helping me accept that sometimes things dont go the way you planned or you have to go at a different pace than others and that's okay. My issues are minimal compared to a lot of people here, but I just wanted to thank you for this video.

    Hey Jaquie. First... I am so excited for you in your college and work endeavors. A little bit about my journey is that I have been dealing with chronic pain basically my entire life so school was always difficult for me to accomplish, but I do love learning. This semester is officially my first semester back from me having to take a whole year off on medical leave from school and work. I am studying biomedical science and I am doing it online at my own pace. I have been through lots of depression from never being able to go to school "normally" and feeling like a failure. Your videos help me out so much to give me encouragement and to let me and many others know that it does not matter what journey you are on, as long as you are moving forward at your own pace and taking care of yourself, then you are doing awesome. Love you and your whole family. You go girl!!!!

In the past month I've had bronchitis and now really bad acid reflux, just got diagnosed with asthma yesterday on top of clinical depression and anxiety, can't imagine what it's like with a chronic illness. Set to graduate with a degree in 3.5 years from now instead of 2 because I have to work almost full-time but that's okay!

    My daughter, who has CVID and is a senior in college, learned through trial and error that she could only manage four courses each semester. She has also interrupted college twice - once by not enrolling one semester, and once by withdrawing part of the way through a semester when things became overwhelming. She was lucky that she had a nice cushion of AP credits from high school, and other credits from a semester abroad, so ultimately she will be graduating only one semester after her high school cohort. This has been and will be quite a significant financial burden on us because she goes to a very expensive private college and her younger brother is also in university, but her father and I understand that if she tried to take a heavier load in order to graduate on time, it could affect her physical health, from exhaustion, and her mental health, from the stress. I guess I might suggest that students struggling with chronic illness/es should consider attending community colleges and in-state universities where the tuition is affordable, in case it takes an extra year or two or more to finish their degree. I think living at home (as my daughter does) and commuting is also worth considering, as a way to save money on room and board. If you lived in a dorm and had to withdraw more than half way through the semester, most schools would not refund your tuition or room and board. It’s important to be aware of such things. Jacquie, do you have any further thoughts on that?

    Hi Jaquie, I’m at USF as well and I’m also set up with SDS. They’ve been so helpful, and also very accommodating to the fact that I have a service dog and I have Rheumatoid arthritis. It can be very hard at times and I am still working on coping with the fatigue and pain but I am pushing through (or getting pulled through) lol my major is health sciences and I am taking 11 credits all online this semester and you just inspire me and show me that it can be done no matter the pace you do it at. I love your videos and I even started a TH-cam channel but have yet to open up about my disability and my service dog, the service dog community is scary, that’s all I have to say. I’d love to hear back from you❤️❤️❤️

    I finished a bachelors last year. At first I felt like a failure because I graduated last out of my friends who were also doing the same thing because I couldn’t cope with a full time load and went part time. I really like and resonate with the way you talked about how it wasn’t going at a slower pace, but my pace because.

  • @needtoknow1989
    @needtoknow1989 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I graduated high school in 2 years and then spent 4 years completing my associate and another 3 years for my Bachelors.
    You see people graduating and think wow I’m slow. But bigger picture I worked so I didn’t need to take loans.
    I was also able to get a job with the “community college” associates that helped fund my B.A. Once I received it I had a promotion waiting for me. I wasn’t just starting the job search.
    Focusing on school is good. But you have to start your mark before. Because when you graduate your 1 of many with that same degree. So it isn’t how long it takes, but what you do during that journey to set yourself apart.

      How do you keep your hair so clean and pretty with a port in? I struggle to properly get my hair clean because I’m accessed 24/7 and they won’t let me access myself

      Freedom, lol... There are so many days where my hair is really dirty/oily. That is when I use dry shampoo, head bands and braids! I wash my hair by flipping it over the tub and using a shower hose, so the only thing getting wet it my hair. Usually Judd or my mom helps with this! I will have a towel around my shoulders to shield my port from getting accidentally sprayed.

      Chronically Jaquie I see that’s pretty much what I have to do too and the top of my hair is always greasy! Gotta find a good dry shampoo. Thanks for the advice! I’m new to a port and still trying to figure it out

    Congratulations!! I hope the classes go well!! My university has 12 credits to be full time and they encourage 15 which I think is insane. I'm currently taking 14 credits 0.0 but it's my last semester.

    It is so good to see you brimming over with excitement about taking 3 courses. I am concerned that this is a lot, given that you just came off of a year of major hospitalizations. Yes, those helped set you up for a much improved outlook, but you are also planning to buy your first home. That process and move will take a lot of energy, even if you are not physically doing the move yourself. Why not just do the internship, since you've already launched that via your volunteer work? And you also have your new social media job as well as your ongoing TH-cam channel. I get your excitement, since you have not felt this well for quite some time. But I am concerned.

    I began studying at the Danish Technical University this summer doing "full time" and in the beginning I quickly realized that even though I was in a good period I could feel that I was overloading myself and I would not be able to continue doing it. I talked to the disability advisers and they recommended to drop a 5 ECTS course (5 ECTS=2.5 American credits) and do it later so I would only be doing a 3 week 5 ECTS course and a 13 week 20 ECTS course this semester. It was really hard for me to do that because I want to be able to do the same as everybody else. And because even just doing 20 ECTS has been really hard for me I might have to take even less in the following semesters which seem a bit scary to me. I have been thinking about it as I will have to be 2-3 semesters slower than others so the quote about not going at a slower pace but just my pace really connected to me and my situation and I feel better about it

    I got a BS in anthropology and then kept getting more and more sick. I developed POTS because my doctors didn't intervene with my MCAD enough so now I can't do anything out in the field. I can't stand hot or cold and am unable to stand up for more than a few minutes at a time. So being a globe-trotting shovel bum is out. I am looking into maybe volunteering at a local museum but I can't till my heath evens out. On CDI but because of insurance I don't get my meds on time every time. So I keep relapsing. When I am able to get steady medication I was improving a little bit.

    I just finished my first week of college. I’m also taking 9 credits this semester! Luckily I only have to go a little over an hour a day plus some online but I have Friday-Sunday free to do it. I’m scared I’m going to get exhausted and my pains going to go crazy. I’m going to make it work though and I’m so exhausted. I’m going for medical assistant at the moment but my end goal is to be a physician Assistant.

I recently found out that I have adrenal insufficiency and abnormal thyroid levels in addition to dysautonomia and ehlers-danlos syndrome and while I hope someday to go back to school it's just not feasible at this point. By the way, since I found your channel I look forward to your videos every day and hope next month to become a patreon subscriber if the $50 level is still available. Thanks for all you do spreading awareness and sharing your positivity with us! It's infectious!!

    I’m taking 21 credit hours and will be finished after this semester. You’ll get through these 9 credits. You can do it. We can struggle together through these long hours together. It’s taken me 6-7 years and I’m so ready to be done. I’m a psychology major and it’s been a rough road. My mental health got the better of me and caused delay. I took a year off for financial reason and then had to take another semester off financially and I’m so ready to have my degree in hand! I’m so close. 23 years old and will be almost 24 when i graduate in May! May 4th to be exact and will be 24 May 30th!

    When I first attended college, I had no idea I had a chronic illness. All of the symptoms I had first time around I thought had to do with stress and lack of sleep from school 😂 But now I know what my chronic illness is and how to manage it a bit better, I HOPE to be able to go back to school and get a second degree in English ❤️ I’m incredibly excited for you to be able to chase your dreams, keep moving forward!!! 😂😍

    I am a senior in high school applying to colleges this year. My goal career is to work in a lab on psych meds, but pharmacy is my back up and I am also going to minor in French for a double backup/side job of translating documents. I'm really nervous for college because I will live on campus and although I have lived in a dorm before I am worried about getting to and from classes which was hard enough on my body at my old school that only had one dorm and one academic building.

    I am going into my third year at Liberty University (online). Ideally I was supposed to be done last year, but I’ve had to go at a slow pace, 1 class every 8 weeks. It’s at times discouraging that I can’t do more. But, as you said the pace I’m at is what I can do now.
    Question: does anyone out there know of a good psychology internship that I could look into? I would appreciate the input.
    Jaquie best of luck on your next endeavor in school, you got this! ❤️

    Recently I graduated from College and it was a big struggle because of my vision problems and other medical problems. One of my medical problems is called irritable bowel syndrome and that was caused due to a whole lot of stress in my college days. There was an also an issue of test timing and other issues but the college I went to was very helpful. My degree that I earned is in business marketing management this is a bachelors degree. I am hoping to work for the federal government because of my disability.

    It's better to do what's going to work for you than overload and fail classes and throw a wrench into your health progress! That's great that you could work out such a good internship and get credit for it! The way the internship works sounds kind of like when I did student teaching. You have a "class," but you don't really attend class. You go to work! Online classes are not a good option for me, but it sounds perfect for you! I am considering going back to college to become a lab tech.
