How to turn hand lettering into hand embroidery

- Turning your hand lettering, or cursive, into hand embroidery is easier than you think! In this tutorial video, I’ll demonstrate with the word, “hello.” My top three tips for doing this are:
1. Choose a stitch that follows a curve well. There are so many options for you to choose from, including back, stem, outline, chain, and split back stitches (I’m using split back stitch here).
2. Adjust the length of your stitches depending on how tight your curves are - it’s easier to follow a tighter curve with shorter stitches.
3. Stitch like you write - if, when you’re writing, you overlap a line, that means you’ll do the same thing while you’re stitching. This is the best way to ensure your final product looks like actual writing.

I’m stitching on two layers of linen using all six strands of cotton embroidery floss; this is the Sonata Seat Stand from Hawthorn Handmade; and I’m writing on my fabric with a blue water-erasable fabric pen.

WOW! This is exactly what I was looking for! I just finished my first baby quilt and wanted to embroider the baby's name and birthdate on the front of the quilt but did not want the embroidery to stand out from the overall appearance of the quilt. I wanted to keep it simple and this is exactly what I will do tomorrow to finish the quilt. I cannot thank you enough for this very helpful video!
This was very helpful, thank you. Your style of speaking and teaching is clear and soothing. After watching your video, I feel more confident to try doing embroidery.
Well done tutorial, and great music.
Thank you for your easy-to-follow tutorial. I have a custom junk journal order with a request to embroider a name on the denim cover. I haven't done any embroidery for years and years. This technique is perfect! Your video was the first I looked at, too. xo
Amazing! Very helpful, thank you
How do you finish the stitch?? Like how do you tie it up on the backside
If I had to guess I say the same way you would tie a knot after regular stitching
thank youuuuu!!!! thank u so so much omg
Nice work, thank you!
nice music! this video was calming and informative
Thank you this is so helpful!
If you were doing this on a piece of clothing, what would you put behind it to avoid skin irritation from the stitching?
You can use fusible iron on stabilizers like Sulky Tender Touch Stabilizer and iron it onto the back when you’re done with the piece.
Iam your new subscriber nice video ❤
How do you know how long of thread you will need. Can you maybe show how you thread your needle?
Normally, I just guess. It would be good to know any tricks, so I will stay here in case someone responds something more useful 😊
what kind of needle would you use to go through a basket
Can I use this tutorial on a Tshirt?
Thx
What kind of thread do you use
Helpful thank you
Could you change the color of the thread for each letter?
would this type of stitching work the same if you are doing gothic lettering
What kind of pen/ marker do you use to write?
Sveiki, noriu išsiuvinėti savo merginos vardą ant skarelės, gal turite pamokėlę?
What do you use to write the word? Is it a special marker?
Same query hope we can get an answer from here...
It looks like a Dritz brand dual-purpose marking pen. One end of the pen has ink that disappears after some time, then other end has ink that washes out with water. You can find them at Joann or any other sewing supply store :)
Yes dritz water soluble ink pen
Does anyone know what type of thread this is? Thickness, etc.? Going to try this for the first time. Thanks!
I believe it’s embroidery thread but using several strands for a thick look.
@Alexa Buffington • Everything you asked for is in the description box, accessible via the drop down arrow under the video. The description box also has a link to a blogpost.
What pen did you use?
Dritz water soluble ink pen
what if you dont have good handwriting?
There is a product "sulky stick and stitch" that is like sticker paper that washes off in water. You can practice/write/draw on that, and when you have one you like you can cut it out and stick it directly to fabric and stitch over it. When you're done stitching you wash it off in warm water and the thread remains.
