Finding South - New Zealand | An Off-Road Journey Through The South Island's Backcountry

  • We have always wanted to freely tour the beautiful, but harsh South Island of New Zealand, and after plenty of smaller trips it was time to experience a more extended journey.
Our aim was to make no plan, explore the less explored and drift with the weather throughout the Island, all while trying to experience as much as possible off the tar seal.
Join us for this 20-minute film following the highs and lows we encounter on the adventure.
Shot and Edited by Joel McDowell & Andrew Lewthwaite.

Beautiful filming! I recognised some of the spots, like the Hakataramea Pass and Waimak Valley. This South Islander, stuck in Oz, just got a little more homesick.

Thanks Nick. There are so many stunning and very quiet parts of the South Island - we only scratched the surface really. West coast would be a dream!

Excellent storytelling, actually something of the best I've seen. Very good balance between the more expedition-oriented stuff on one side, and the more personal thoughts and experiences on the other. A pleasure to watch!

I been doing it for 7 years we head south every February a lot of these places down there have big winds your better off taking out back seats and making a bed that way if it’s raining or windy as you just jump in the back and bed is ready none of us use roof tents or swags been there done that

This video put a big smile on my face! I very much enjoyed the slow pace and incredible scenery. Back in 2011, I had the luck to live and travel around New Zealand for 10 months. And despite exploring almost all corners of the country, I never knew that New Zealand was home to so many incredible offroad trails. I seriously cannot wait to come back and get out there to explore this amazing country once again.

We didn't put too much planning into the trip as we wanted to remain as flexible as possible, chasing the good weather around. However, we all are reasonably familiar with the Island and knew of some spots we wanted to visit. We definitely spent more time rushing around to make sure we had everything we needed before leaving

Great stuff. To answer your final question. A more detailed look. You did a brief scan. I suggest you dig deeper on each route, check those graves stones and see the stories of those before us. Why does this road exist, how was it made, when, who kept it going, which town did it go to, why is no one there now. The real stories are fascinating

We did a back country trip like this back in 2014 in the central high country from station to station through Canterbury and Central Otago, recognised some of your locations too. Was epic, your video brought lots of memories back and a desire to head south again. Our biggest issue was getting permission to get onto the land, how did you get this? We went following paper roads so many times only to find chains across the road or gates padlocked.

I love how a mild gravel road seems a challenge to you guys. What I see as another day, is an adventure and the story you tell .. showing that adventure is bloody brilliant. I would hire you on the spot to tell our story if I could afford you. I'm glad you had a wicked time down south, its a beautiful place, one i probably take for granted. You are welcome back anytime and hell, even hit me up. More than happy to show you the rougher side. Although i don't think it will tell the romantic side of the south your story told but... I know a few spots. lets see what i can come up with.
