    Great vid Lars.
    I love idea of a 'general chat' UHF channel. A bit of banter with passing / following 4x4s on long drives would be crack up.

      I was driving to work this morning at 5am in Sydney and Channel 40 was going off on the main motorway west. Great banter. The channel can be very helpful, very funny or just downright abusive. Still great to have though as you can find out about Police radars or why the traffic is slowing. It seems it is channel 40 most places (in NSW at least) but Channel 28 or 29 (I can't remember) on the the main motorway north towards Brisbane.

      Great to hear mate, Best thing you can do. Start small and find out what type of 4wding, Touring, Overlanding. You are into. Then start building your car from there.
      First things you should get is some recovery gear. Shovel, snatch strap and shackle. An air compressor is also great early purchase.
      Other than that enjoy.

    My first time watching your site, very nice to watch as mostly only watch foreign sites, I was caught in a blizzard on the turkino road back in 1986 in my land Rover thankfully able to dig myself out in time as had a full young family on board, especially like this series because I live in Taupo since 1978 and traveled around the district in the land Rover and my fleet truck, your gas cooker is the same as I am using for 20 year's, I definitely will be watching you from now on, 👍👍👍👍.

There ARE NO dangerous animals n things (just some rotten humans) so lucky to just have to contend with mossie's n sandfly's. Travel well cheers. Hey I watched to the end and YUSS! Frost at night is NOT evidence of sub zero air temperatures. It may have been zero or under but frost is a sign of a differential between radiant heat of objects and radiant heat recieved by them and typically/only happens on clear nights with no cloud cover to reflect the radiated warmth back down again.

    Hey mate, hope your keeping safe. Tukino is on my must do list. As for uhf, there are repeaters around the north island, but they are mostly privately run and not advertised for what channel is for what area. Here in Auckland we have channel 5 as a repeater. But it doesn't really work north of hellensville or south of Drury. I think it's a great idea. Id fully support it.

    • @4WDNewZealand

      Tires and suspension should be first on your mods list. A good snorkel should also be a priority especially if you are planning on doing any off-roading in the south island. Make sure its properly sealed and allows enough air flow for your engine to breath. their are way to may snorkels that restrict airflow. Its one fo the may reason we run a Safari snorkel. A set of diff breathers go hand and hand with a snorkel.

    Nice vid Lars, we are planning to explore this area over the xmas new year time. Honest review of the Garmin Overlander? Is it worth the money for NZ? Im sick of using my phone for maps, would be great to start using something like the overlander. Cheers.

      Thanks mate. Great place to explore and take in the sights.
      Running a designated GPS is awesome. The Overlander is the most user friendly one i've had so far. The it does a lot more than just mapping, and being able to link it to the inReach is great. It means I don't need to use my phone.
      However it does not run NZ Top 50 which is a bit of a shame as for NZ the are the best. It runs Garmin's Version of NZ Topo Maps which are good but don't have quite as much detail. This is one suggestion I have passed on to Garmin as they did send me to Overlander for RnD.

      In really cold weather yes you do. This wasn't considered that cold, for the most part the temp was above 0. So short answer is no there was noting I had to do for this trip.

    Hey Lars, great area to explore , i did a video on the same area around the Desert Road and just keep wanting to go back ,
    The idea of a UHF channel dedicated to the likes of ourselves and other Overlanders and travellers would be a great idea , if they do the repeater up on Tukino Road area that could easily save lives in the future . I also use the Garmen Inreach system as a safety device and a communicator with home its as much piece of mind for myself as it is for my family to be able to track me
    Hopefully people will get on board with the UHF channel idea , count me in for sure

      Thanks for you feedback mate. I did actually come across your video whilst doing the research for this Ep. Keep it up mate, it's good to see others out exploring.
      Will definitely start promoting a UHF channel, like CH 40 from now on.
      How good is the inReach, I take it everywhere now. Great for peace of mind and for about the same cost as a PLB its great.

    Hi Lars. How are you finding the 76 with differing axel widths on those tracks ?

    • @4WDNewZealand
      @4WDNewZealand  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be honest it hasn't been a big issue yet, on these tracks it hardly noticeable. Its not until you get into soft sand/ Deep snow where your rear wheels cant decide with wheel track to follow.
      Definitely something we'd like to correct in future, but not a show stopper. Getting content out is the main goal now.

      @@4WDNewZealand Thanks Lars. I'm glad to hear it. Same with the low-slung alternator on those creek crossings? No issues so far?

    • @4WDNewZealand
      @4WDNewZealand  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is also something I'm keeping in mind, the research I've done says its more in thick mud rather than water crossings. Still not an idea place for it.
      So far I haven't had any issues with the alternator, but I also drive with a bit of mechanical sympathy :) The next option is to move to a fully sealed unit. Terrain tamer makes a nice looking sealed air cooled one.
      Heading down to the south island soon which will be a good test for it, will make a point to comment on how it goes in one of the videos.

    • @joshinthecity
      @joshinthecity 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@4WDNewZealand That would be fantastic. Looking forward to the new content and the update. I'm looking at a sealed option too. I just don't want to always be worried about it.. Big $ though, and I'm also a little concerned about the added heat from the alternator into the trucks cooling system. Everything's a bloody compromise.
