      Just how important are insulin coolers? Can insulin not be kept at room temp for several days? Does it really affect it that much?

    I bought the refrigerated cooler for my European backpacking trip. 40 days and 40 nights during the infamous European heatwave that grounded some planes and halted travel. The cooler performed admirably. People that are complaining about these being unnecessary obviously don't travel

    Great video. I'm new to using insulin and hadn't considered that keeping it cool on certain trips, even day trips, might be necessary. I will definitely check these out if the need arises. Thanks for all of the great information you provide in your videos!

    I recently traveled from Texas to Hawaii - long flights and also hot days when traveling on the island. I have the refrigerated cooler, but the insert kept everything cool during the entire trip (refrozen nightly in the hotel refrigerator) - I was still glad to have the option in case the hotel was not equipped for me to refreeze the insert each night.

    How long does the refridgeration unit keep the insulin cool when it is unplugged (without swapping for the ice pack)? I'm looking for something I can do a multiday hike with and plug in at night at my stops in between.

    How loud is the cooling lid when running? When using the cooling lid do you also use the gel pack? Also, can I leave it plugged in USB continuously for weeks maybe months?

    • @TypeOneTalks
      @TypeOneTalks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not loud at all. You can hear it but it's not disturbing or anything like that. I don't see why you would not be able to keep it plugged non-stop. I had it plugged for a week and no issues.

    I bought this cooler. however my testing revealed that the USB cooler attachment never went below 12 deg.C. That is well short of the 2 - 8 deg C. needed. I returned the unit disapointed.

    I found the All4Family mini-frig indispensable during a motorcycle camping trip across west Texas to Mexico during the summer of 2022. Sure, if you are in a climate-controlled environment during short travels or in a moderate temperature area and only need room temperature for your medications, you might not need this at all. But, if you are on a long trip and taking along unused insulin that needs to stay refrigerated, their mini-frig is the only product with this capacity. And, it isn’t just for multi-day outdoor trips. It is also needed if you are traveling across continents, sending children to summer camp or to spend a month with relatives, or if you are retired and taking a month long trip. In those situations you have to take extra insulin pens that need to be kept refrigerated during the trip (and while at summer camp).
    My motorcycle trip was a multi-day trip and of course was without air conditioning. Temperatures were 100+ F during the day. I had to decide between having my in-use insulin too hot or keeping it refrigerated, which I generally don’t do. I concluded that keeping it refrigerated was far better than excessive heat multiple days in a row. And, since this was a long trip, I also took a backup insulin pen that I hadn’t started using yet. So, it “needed” to be refrigerated. I use both short-acting and long-acting insulin pens daily. I could not find any other mini-frig on the market that could hold 3 or more pens. Since I was camping, I could not re-freeze a bio gel pack at night. So, I bought the mini-frig. I ran it off the USB plug on my motorcycle during the day and a battery pack at the campsites at night. I charged the battery pack during the day on the motorcycle. (During a canoe camping trip last year, I ran the mini-frig off a large battery pack during the day and charged a spare battery with a solar charger. But the temperatures weren’t as extreme.)
    I have also used Frio bags and they work fine for a few hours of moderately warm temperatures. But, before my motorcycle camping trip, while testing the All4Family mini-frig on my back porch in Texas, I tested the Frio bag. The Frio bag could not keep the insulin below 86 degrees F during hot temperatures. And, Frio bags certainly don't work for insulin pens that need to be refrigerated. Living in Texas and motorcycling during the summer, I also use the VIVI Cap Insulin Temperature Shield. It is great for day trips with a single insulin pen and I prefer it over the All4Family products for that usage, just due to the small size.
    As you noted Tom, it is VERY important to keep any insulin cooler out of direct sun light. During testing on my back porch, the mini-frig could not keep insulin at “refrigerated” temperature when it was in direct sun light, but it worked perfectly when shaded. Keeping it shaded was a bit tricky on a motorcycle, as you have to place it where there is adequate air flow (not buried in a stuffed saddle bag).
    I became a strong advocate for the All4Family mini-frig last summer. It really fills a void that no other product fills. And, the All4Family company has top notch service. I had a minor issue with one of their coolers I bought. They took care of it quickly without any hassle!! The downside is the mini-frig is not cheap. But, it is top quality, durable, and has solid customer support if it should be needed.

    Is the display not in Celsius? And I just place the meds in the middle of the fridge lid?

    hi i hope you are doing super well! the first, small All4Family rambler one got too cold and ruined a cartridge of my novolog on a trip. it was really stressful. i messaged them and they said to leave it out for 10 minutes before putting it in the cooler. i tried that and put the dison thermometer top on to check the temp and it was still O degrees celsius. they then told me to run in under warm water for 2 or 3 minutes before putting it in the cooler. just a warning to anyone who wants to use it! question- have you used an inPen in any of these? i'm worried about the moisture messing up the electronic element.

    We are traveling to carribean on cruise. They do not have a fridge in the stateroom. Also planning to take insulin vial on the port. Which one do you think is the best? We will not have cold or ice cubes available all the time.

    Why buy an extra cooling system when you already have a normal thermos flask? I don't understand that! And have you ever heard of evaporative cooling?

    I have a 30 hour trip from INDIA to US next month and need to carry Forteo (the osteoporosis injection) at 2-8C. Is it better to get the Explorer vs the Nomad version since it has a USB cooling lid and a temperature display too?

    The FRÍO ® insulin cooler keeps in-use insulin and other temperature sensitive-medications cool and safe, within safe temperatures of 18-26°C (64.4-78.8°F) for a minimum of 45 hours, even in a constant environmental temperature of 37.8°C (100°F). Lasting up to 5 times longer than ice packs, make FRÍO ® part of your every day life - no more bulky, inconvenient packs or vacuum flasks needed ever again!

    Which of these products do you typically use, Tom, on long travel days that include air travel? I am considering the medium Nomad. Do the frozen bio gel packs ever cause issues at airport security? Thanks.

      Out of these I prefer the minifridge for performance (in extreme heat) and the optional cable and the soft case for comfort when I'm not in exteremely hot climate. The soft case is easier to handle in most cases and squeeze in a bag:)

    I dont understand why you need this device for a day trip. Your insulin would be fine for that. For taking extra whilst traveling on an holiday to store in luggage whilst flying this might be worth it.

    • @TypeOneTalks
      @TypeOneTalks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for sharing. I agree for a day trip it might not be necessary but it really depends on the conditions. When it gets very hot and you are exposed to lots of sun then it is very helpful to keep the insulin cool.

    Ffs insulin doesn't need to be refrigerated, a bottle can be kept at room temp for up to a month

    • @TypeOneTalks
      @TypeOneTalks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. That is true. For 28 days at room temperature. In many destinations the air is much much warner than what we consider a room temperature. That's when this is needed.

    Not good! You should have measured it with a proper data logger. For example by using a thermochron device. Relying on text on paper is perhaps a starting point. But for a review you should have measured it.

    • @TypeOneTalks

      Thanks for the feedback. I tested the coolers in real life but I do not own such a device to measure the temperature inside. I relied more on my subjective impressions.
