I am T2D using a CGM to help control my BG readings. A dinner of steak and some red wine results in lowering my BS immediately and continues with ow overnight readings. I usually do 20 minutes on my spin bike late in the evening which can lower BS from dinner and keep the overnight readings low as well. Using a CGM allows for documenting diatery input thus developing knowledge of foods that keep BS readings low over time. Good episode.
A couple years ago my blood sugar, blood pressure, uric acid and cholesterol were skyrocketing. I did many things and none worked until I fasted. Fasting is the most effective for me.
Also type 1 (LADA). I used to eat high healthy carbs and low fat, but my weight and insulin resistance increased steadily over the last 5 years since diagnosed. I have now completely changed my macros - still low fat, but also low carb and high plant-based protein. This is a game changer! I have lost 10 kg in 3 months, blood sugar is low and extremely stable, decreased insulin by 70%. I also go for a 15 minute walk after lunch, I no longer need insulin for lunch.
How did you know, you have typ 1.5 diabetes (LADA). I have Typ 2 diabetes, but it seems nothingv really works for me. I eat so little portion (to small) and low carb, but still get high bloodsugar levels. I don't know why.
@@Judith-H7you can blood test for the GAD autoimmune marker and see if your immune system is attacking your beta cells and also for C-Peptide markers that are produced when insulin is made by your body. Ask your Medical Doctor for advice and to take these tested
@vicenteneto8430 my doctor told me, she testet it, and all 4 antibodies (I think it's so called) came back negativ. I've been diagnosed 1.5 years ago. I've one year without treatment. The treatment started in middle of may and nothing really helped. Since then I lost about 16kg cause of low calories per day (around 600) and low carbs (about 50-60 gramm a day) caused by trulicity. But still I eat small portions with low carbs my bloodsuger rise up to 200mg/dl. I still don't get it. The typical medication (metformin, Sitagliptin, steglujan) doesn't work, same with trulicity.
Found you last week and quickly realized that listening to just a couple of your videos one day makes me more conscious of my eating for the next several days! So, add this to your list of what lowers blood sugar! And, Thank You, from a grandparent with Type II.
I'm a non diabetic parent of a t1d, and that dose timing before meals really does seem to make a huge difference. If I can get a good idea of the carbs in the meal I'll have my kid dose a good 15-20 minutes prior to starting the meal. It also seems to make a difference in the food types as well, a meal with more fat or fiber content will change the blood sugar levels differently, and i sometimes will estimate slightly higher on the dose to accommodate those variances. Daily activity is very helpful in maintaining a more steady BG, and exercise has an impact even hours after the activity. I would absolutely agree with this list (except we don't know about the alcohol effect since our child is still a child). We are nearly a year into this and it seems like things are finally a little less daunting. Our t1d opted to do the omnipod and we are still waiting to jump back to the g7 now that it's compatible. We have found the pump to be more smooth in the ups and downs, and definitely spend more time "in range". One thing I will say is that the dietary recommendations for a pediatric t1d is really a good guideline for everyone. Nothing is off limits (in theory anyway), but it's more like being conscious of the balance between the food types and working any "treats" into life in a more healthful manner (instead of gorging on junk because it's a celebration). It's really a better approach to diet no matter who you are and sustainable because it's not super restrictive.
I am newly insulin resistance for 1st time since April 2024. I’m learning many things from u and other research. So far keeping it manageable. I hope to never need meds for it. Anyway….im grateful to learn how to better care for myself. I am 71. Ahna 🌺
I am a 70-year old female diabetic for 26 yrs, and my readings are mostly 8-15 mmol/l. I have learnt this .. before eating carbs, eat greens, proteins and fats (butter). The sugar won’t spike so high. Fasting works for me but this is miserable. My sugar spikes whenever I cheat, esp on noodles. My breakfasts are huge on vegetables. Then Nothing until the next morning’s bfast. If I get too hungry, I can sleep. So I scramble two eggs, add cheese, onions or tomatoes. Eat a grapefruit and chew a medium raw carrot. Next morning, the reading is mostly 7 -8 mmol/l. Been on metformin ( glucophage) and Diamicron glyciside (one each). No bp. No cholesterol. I walk daily 5k steps. Facing the ill effects of long -term diabetes .. fatigue, itchy bad skin. Numbness, hunger, gout, sometimes foamy urine, sometimes incontinence, poor eyesight, etc. oh dear ..
I would really love to see a video on treating lows-all the alternatives, pros & cons. Also would love a video on making your own glucose liquid shots at home.
Never realized how pre diabetic I was. Crazy. I've been doing more serious intermittent fasting and eating keto, carnivore, mixing it up and avoiding carbs like the plague. I have reversed so many of these! Thank you thank you!
Very interesting and a great reminder of some of the points for keeping Glucose levels acceptable. I personally disagree with the Alcohol intake, but that's only because I have an extreme addiction to Alcohol which I developed from one of you favorite sayings, Don't be so hard on yourself. Just means I'm now 45 years Alcohol free and have not missed it at all.
I like your videos except for one detail. In Canada, blood glucose is measured in mmol/L. It’s actually illegal for a manufacturer to display on their glucometres any other unit. Please add mmol/L when displaying quantities of blood glucose levels. Thanks and keep up the good work.

More sleep sounds great. However, it is often interrupted by blood sugar problems. If less sleep causes blood sugar problems that is a hard one to fix.
Just a tip I discovered after watching your 'best bread' video: I noticed that many of the zero gluten breads ('free from') have great carbs to fibre ratios, 3 or less. And compared to normal white bread where I just have sandwiches for a meal, using these prevents next day numbness/tingling in my feet. Anyway thanks Tom for being a diabetic trailblazer!
Adam Brown wrote a book “Bright Spots and Landmines…” that I read when newly diagnosed. It helped start a healthy relationship with my T1D. I highly recommend the book.
Yes, eating late is one of my biggest problems. I am on (T2D) Ozempic so I often I just don't get the hunger prompt until very late in the night like 9-10 pm. It's definitely problematic for the night values.
2.time of day. I think this one depends on what time you take your long acting insulin as I used to take it at night and I would often have hypo in the middle of the night but now that I take it in the morning it helped stabilize my sugars more during the day.
Note: alcohol consumed while taking metformin can contribute to a buildup of lactic acid, potentially leading to lactic acidosis. For that reason, the medicine label should have a warning to limit alcohol use to no more than 2 units per day. I've personally found that taking l-carnosine can help offset this to an extent. Regardless, suffice it to say that caution is advised.
In 33 years I’ve never done the final thing. I always jab & eat. I’m on novorapid or actrapid as it used to be called & now with a CGM my sugars always go up after a meal & come back down over the next few hours. Thanks for the tip I will try this

How was the insulin resistance calculated on the low carb diet? My total insulin requirements for meals decreased considerably after going low carb, so I don't recognize your observations. In my opinion insulin resistance should be assessed by looking at the insulin to calorie ratio, to remove any bias towards either carbs or protein.
What is the little digital readout thing in the background on the shelf that is showing your BG level? Can someone tell me the name of it so I can look it up?
I lived a lot of my life in Arizona, not there now. I remember that when it was hot outside, salads for dinner were very popular and more desired than heavier meals. Perhaps this accounts to lower blood sugar when it's hot out.
Number 6 - cold temperature and then you talked about how some people prefer being in the sun with warm temperature to lower the numbers. Personally, I like cryotherapy. And I find that it is very helpful. For some people, that might be a bit too much but I think it’s very helpful for myself as well as lowering inflammation with other issues that I have. Sauna is also very good. So if you did a sauna at 12 noon and then you did cryotherapy at 4 PM, you’d probably be doing miraculous things for your body.
Talk to your doctor about using a different statin? Or, maybe use a lower dose? Both my wife and I get good results taking 1.5mg of Rosuvastatin daily, which is 1/2 the smallest dose available.
Mine breaks all the rules none of the above does it. Exercise in the morning is the only thing that keeps it low for the whole day ( I even have to jab an hour beforehand most days and my sugars stay up for about five hours before coming down..lol my endro doc will finally believe me when I show her the CGM figures. (Alcohol sends my sugars soaring btw). Another btw is carbs and starches are very different...I try to avoid starches ( potatoes/rice/pasta/bread/quinona/couscous/oats) they shoot my sugars to the moon... Black coffee also increases sugars because it increases adrenalin). Fruit actually spikes quicker but lowers sugars quicker than normal 5 hours it takes....
Not only alcohol lowers blood sugar, but according to my own personal experience cannabis also lowers blood sugar, I'm not telling you to start smoking cannabis either, but for me cannabis works.
Yes it seems to do that. But doesn't it create a spike? I don't use cannabis but my friends who do experience pretty high sugar cravings after smoking it

Low carbs diet is difficult for someone who is diabetic and still needs to work. The pancreas of diabetics person is week and can easily damage by alcohol , it will make diabetes worst, the this base on my experience.
My DR says don't worry about prediabetes... "If it goes HIGHER, I can always can get you some metformin" I lost 15 lbs. It did nothing. The only thing that moved me out of prediabetes was the carnivore diet, and time restricted eating. True story...
Interesting about him and you needing more insulin when eating a high fat meal, because fat is not supposed to raise blood glucose, and protein only raises it a bit. Everything I read says this. Keeping carbs low means you can start burning stored fat instead of the quick glucose from what you just ate. I wonder if this differs if you are at an optimal body weight, like you are.
Drinking alcohol to lower blood sugar when you already have underlying conditions like diabetes is such a terrible idea..actually just drinking alcohol to lower blood sugar is a terrible idea. This is why you always take those TH-camrs with a grain of salt…..nuts
I have been counting carbs and using the Ominpod 5, my gosh it really helps my blood sugar stay between 85-180. I’m still working on it plus I have sleeping better too. I gave up alcohol and use coconut sugar to replace sugar for coffee and tea.
@sunshinebeauty56 Sugar is sugar is sugar... Coconut sugar is still sugar. Monk fruit, Stevie and other plant based, no calorie sweeteners will help you transition to using less sweeteners overall. Coconut sugar has the same number of carbs and calories as table sugar and honey. It's a learning process...

Drinking green tea with a little cinnamon will help reduce blood sugar (I am applying this recipe).

Carbs don’t really work for some of T2 folks, even the “Good Carbs”. Ultra low carb works best if you have fallen off the cliff.
Yep. I'm pre-diabetic. "Good" carbs drop-kick me through the high blood glucose window. Quinoa, unless I drench it in fats, sends me over 200.

I have best experience with moringa and spirulina.

My DR says don't worry about prediabetes... "If it goes HIGHER, I can always can get you some metformin" I lost 15 lbs. It did nothing. The only thing that moved me out of prediabetes was the carnivore diet, and time restricted eating. True story...

Interesting about him and you needing more insulin when eating a high fat meal, because fat is not supposed to raise blood glucose, and protein only raises it a bit. Everything I read says this. Keeping carbs low means you can start burning stored fat instead of the quick glucose from what you just ate. I wonder if this differs if you are at an optimal body weight, like you are.

I have been counting carbs and using the Ominpod 5, my gosh it really helps my blood sugar stay between 85-180. I’m still working on it plus I have sleeping better too. I gave up alcohol and use coconut sugar to replace sugar for coffee and tea.
