As someone who owns black DLC coated titanium pocket knives I can tell you this….the reason why you can rub off the marks is because what you’re rubbing off is the element of the surface the watch has come into contact with. So what you’re essentially doing is rubbing off the concrete or rock off the watch. DLC is the best finish you can get on titanium and stands for diamond like coating for a reason. It increases the hardness of the titanium. Hope this helps.

After 2 years of usage, including moving to a new house, diving, regular laps in the local club pool, working on my bikes and car (including a rage episode where I could not connect my watch to my AirPods - which I throw my watch away).... no big scratches on the metal and zero on the glass.

As a watch guy, I can tell you that buying the black ultra for "scratch resistance" is the big mistake. Yes, the DLC coating is more durable than bare titanium but it's only a mater of time before you hit it or scrape it hard enough to penetrate the coating and reveal the bare titanium underneath which will cause the mark to show far than it would on the bare titanium model. The bare titanium model will age far better than the black variant. Apple uses grade 5 ti so it's durable enough on its own. Buy the black ultra 2 because you like the look or else you will be dissapointed if you are expecting something that will not show wear.

After 1 year + of wearing Apple watch ultra 1 I can tell you that it's durable. I have no cover and did a lot of activities and never took it off from my wrist. So I was swimming in a sea for a month and no harm happened. Only salt deposits on the device was annoying. Old watch 4 was much better due to curve shape. On Apple watch ultra salt is everywhere on the screen rants(titanium case is a little higher than the screen) and it looks very bad. You need to keep in mind to always clean it afterwards. So far this is the best disadvantage of Ultra design. Have no screen scars and only one small one on titanium frame(made by spigen case which I immediately threw away).

The question is not how durable the coating is, but rather how durable the material underneath the coating is. If the material underneath is significantly softer, as is the case with titanium, the coating above will "break" like a hard eggshell when it is subjected to stress at certain points. This is why we talk about the eggshell effect. Some manufacturers of high-quality watches therefore coat the stainless steel before coating it (ice hardening, for example). These watches are then almost indestructible. The Ultra 2 will scratch very quickly and you will see the silver titanium underneath. My own Ultra 2 in Black scratched after the first 12 hours.

I've got an ultra 2 and definitely put it through its paces. What I've noticed about the finish is that the titanium is very strong but the textured finish will mark. Scratches don't penetrate but they do blemish the texture. I figure the black will be similar unless you really bang it or drag it across a sharp object. I bet if you take the black ultra 2 and drag it across rough natural granite it will destroy it. Rock Climbing, Mountaineering, Scrambles any sport wear your using your hands against real rock you will have a problem. Drop test is one thing but accidentally sliding the finish against something like a cliff or if you fall while hiking and it hits a rock while you save your face from the same fate. I highly doubt it'll hold up to that.

Fantastic video, and I was hoping to see some real life testing of the black Ultra 2. Nice as the black is, my thoughts would be that when you do majorly ding it/scratch it, and remove the black coating and reveal the natural titanium below, the scratch/ding is going to be WAY MORE noticeable, and this video proves my thoughts correct. Admittedly your high quality camera and macro will make the scratches look worse than they are. Definitely think I will be sticking with the natural titanium for this reason and also, I just find that the natural titanium colour looks more premium in my opinion. It's great that we now have more than one colour choice for the Ultra.

It would be interesting to see if the new Milanese band scratches the DLC coating of the watch. That has been a problem in the past.

I have the Apple Watch Ultra 2 titanium. I had it since it came out last year. I guess I’m lucky as my watch looks like it’s brand new. Thanks for your review.

i have a series 6 since 2021 and it's still in great conditions. the screen has some deep scratches from a fall during downhill riding but nothing serious. the chassis doesn't have one single scratch (i sleep with it, i workout with it, i swim with it, i do downhill riding, i've hit so many rocks but it's still in great conditions)

I was planning to keep my series 7 until they released the ultra 3, but I believe it was stolen from my job or I lost it. I preordered the black ultra 2, but after seeing damage report posts on Reddit I decided to wait and see. Although the wear these simple tests did were very minimal, you can tell this watch will not look good 4 years down the road. I understand the argument of it being a sports watch, which I will use for as well, but I also want to use it in a casual setting like dates or hanging out with friends. The damage each watch receives should be the same, but it’s a coating and it will come off and be more apparent. Besides that, I liked the aesthetics of the natural titanium after a few days seeing pictures of both with different watch bands. Thanks for this video boss. It helped me solidify my choice.

Upgraded from a natural titanium Ultra which looks practically new following daily wear for over a year to the satin black Ultra 2. After a week I’ve already got two scratches: one and the same location from your drop and one on the side. Don’t even know how they got there. Will be returning the black and going back to titanium.

But I mean it still scratched. That scuff would drive me nuts. Sticking with my ultra 2 regular titanium

    • @ChaseTheSummit
      @ChaseTheSummit  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

It did, but it was pretty minor. Realistically anything with a finish is going to scratch including the Garmin in this video.

First ultra, bought pretty much at launch day, some very very minor scratches on the edges of the bezel. Other than that? Nothing.
Normal day to day use, gym, running, biking, off-roading, hiking. Even got to smash it a few times on hard surfaces, by accident of course.
    Impressive indeed.

The treatment impregnates the color into the surface the metal. That’s why it doesn’t scratch like you would think.

очень ждал тестов с ударами о трубы и ручки дверей, перила на лестнице, эти удары куда более часты и при этом довольно сильные, мои обычные apple watch 7 уже получили пару сколов на корпусе

I actually find it funny that all those with natural titanium ultra 1’s and 2’s are stating they hit it on things and there isn’t one single mark on it. Stating it looks brand new. It in fact does take on scratches and blemishes, not major but it does. And jerryrigeverything was able to easily scratch right through the dlc coating with a box cutter blade. Point is, buy the damn watch you like and use it for what it’s meant for. Enjoy the wear and tear you put on it. Makes it yours.
I do have an ultra 2 for a year now, it does have small blemishes and it has not taken falls or been in any extreme environments.

I got the Ultra in black three days ago. Yesterday i recognized that the black coating went off on one corner. I did not have any impact on the watch or anything rubbing on the frame. Today I returned it to Apple. I think that should not happen..not to something that‘s so expensive. Poor quality!
