    I've been a Samsung guy for a long time (but was all in with Apple from 2011 through 2018). I have to admit, when Apple decides on creating a quality product - which is very often - they do a fantastic job. I am very impressed by this demonstration. Thank you, DC Rainmaker!

      "When Apple decides on creating a quality product" Do you mean Designing? I thought Foxconn was the manufacturer who will undoubtedly hawk the designs to 3rd parties sooner than later.
      Garmin IMO will either have to Shat or get off of the Pot. If Samsung or Google feel like this market is lucrative enough, look for a Garmin takeover on the Horizon.

    Great review, as a diver I was surprised that decreasing the pressure so fast did not triggered any alarm, any dive computer will indicate if you are ascending too fast to prevent decompression sicknesses . The idea of trying it out in Vinkeveen is interesting but not so for filming as it can get pretty dark there after few meters. As regards the 40 meters limit, it is more than acceptable for the great majority of divers if you consider than an open water diver is allowed to dive up to 18 meters. It in an interesting gadget but I would not ditch my dive computer for an Apple Watch, not even as a back up, at least for now. Still, thanks so much for the review.

    A way to make your "pressure testing setup" last much longer, would be to actually pop that tablet open, get this old battery out, and attach some extension wires to the battery terminals (getting them out of the case). This way you could run the juice from a lab bench power supply to the expected amp/volts needs. This way at least from the POV of the tablet dying of battery - shouldn't be a problem any more.

      @@Dcrainmaker You need to spend a certain time below a certain depth to need a deco stop going up (has to do with how fast your blood and other liquids get saturated in dissolved N2 (mostly)). There are diving charts for that too. In practice divers take enough time to go down that they will always need a stop (or slow ascent) as soon as they go below a few meters. I assume the watch would give you those warnings if you had spent enough time down there. Besides that it's a fantastic video and great setup, you beat every other reviewer with this ! Thanks for you vids!

    Entertaining and fun. Great to see the depth animation, too. The concern I have is the aging of the seals, and Apple not stating a price, or even availability, for changing them past two-three years. My 20 year old Polar watch WR5 ATM was fine after a change of the seals, but the first sign something was wrong was a slight fogging. Amazingly they provided seals 17 years past purchase. No longer available. The Ultra is so impressive, a full smart watch with 100m WR and functioning microphones and speakers. First time I've ever wanted an Apple product.

    This test doesn't say much as it doesn't show the harsh effects of sea salt, bumping things while diving etc. Having your watch have scratches or smell, while at work isn't ideal. (dive computers smell, washed or not)
    No idea about the third party app but this one is completly useless as it doesn't show life critical stuff like ascending speed or time till decompression stop is required etc.

    Great video and very nice test of a product I'm quite interested buying. As a (currently inactive) dive instructor the behaviour of the watch below 40M worries me, it's unlike any other dive instrument I've ever used and thus may cause confusion or panic should a diver not anticipate it. I understand there are disclaimers and warnings not to exceed this depth however if a recreational diver finds them-self below 40M they may be in a duress situation with layers of problems building, such as narcosis, cold, low air, etc and for the instrument they may be relying on to stop providing depth information could make the situation worse. It doesn’t matter that they should have another depth gauge with them, if panic has started to set in, together with some narcosis, it's quite possible they won't think to look for it.

    • @eltonq

    1:32 Take a look at the manual of pretty much any current non-dive watch with a 50m or 100m rating and you will see that the manual states that they are not to be used for scuba diving. Manuals for non-diver Seiko watches rated to 100m (some even to 200m) state that the watches can be used for swimming and diving without tanks (skin diving), but not for scuba diving.
    Completely different story for divers watches which are dive rated for those same depths.

    • @ericpeterson9110
      @ericpeterson9110 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The reason non ISO certified divers will discourage diving is more to do with liability and it not meeting an appropriate standard of testing. A 50-100m watch will easily survive recreational diving, but because it isnt tested as throughly there is a greater chance of failure and doesnt meet the practical requirements.

    • @martinoneill3209
      @martinoneill3209 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Amazing technical work and thank you. Yes, I agree with USNOZZY, is there any chance you could do the test to 100m? Freedivers go well below 40 meters and it would be interesting to see if the watch will even log those depths (regardless of whether the Oceanic app only does SCUBA). Would be good to see what is technically possible and what the max depth is that gets logged in the health app.

    It's not JUST about pressure, it's about movement as well. I (stupidly) took my new iPhone and wanted to take some video of spawning salmon. However, back then, phones were "water resistant" and running water, GREATLY increases the risk of water ingress. Same thing with diving. The movement of your hands through the water increases risk. That's why although a watch it rates for 100m, it's not DESIGNED to be taken to 100m. It's the same EPA fuel economy ratings. They're rated for OPTIMAL conditions.

    Very cool review, thank you!
    Regarding compatibility of the old Windows app and the fragility of the tablet: have you tried using a Virtual Machine (e.g. with VMware Player) on your laptop? You could then run the appropriate Windows version inside the VM and pass the USB device through to the virtual machine. That might be a solution and you can do easier snapshots and backups of that dive software VM. Cheers!

    So, it's possible to start a dive and accidentally forget to start the right app first? 10-18m is one thing, but 25m+ you really start depending on your computer for NDC time. Dive computers have a whole lot of fail safes, and indicators on surfacing safely with safety stops.
    I'm all for more people getting into diving, but the idea of accidentally not starting an app, in the hands of someone that didn't want to spend money on a dive computer, in a dangerous environment (water is very unforgiving) does worry me somewhat.

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The app automatically starts as soon as you go underwater. However, because I couldn’t touch the buttons easily once u put it in, the display wouldn’t have shown ok for you to see. On a persons wrist that’s not an issue.

    • @BernardWalter
      @BernardWalter 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If by “right app” you mean oceanic instead of apple’s depth app, then I’d assume you can use action button to start it. Currently you can set action button to start apple’s depth app

      I have had dove computers not go into dove mode or be in the wrong gas but mostly because of operator error. They usually let you know. I have had a Several dove computers. Usually wear two and a watch as failure can and do happen. I do mostly deco dives and while I can do ratio calculations with just the watch prefer not to do so. Back in the early days there was so much variety of deco models one computer would clear and if you didn't want to bend the computer that had not cleared you tied a jump line to it and left it down while you took your gear off and put stuff away and reeled your computer back up.😅

    Actually really interesting. Certs have surely changed from when I was diving in the 1070s, when I had my Omega. And by the way, that multi thousand dollar watch back then (imagine the equivalent price today!) while stated to be either 300 or 1,000 meters, I forget which, also wasn’t warranted against water ingress. If it happened, Omega was the sole determinant party as to whether it was a factory defect or not. If they decided it wasn’t, you were out of luck.

    As you are compressing that tank using air, I would place a spaced cage around it, in the unlikely event it fails it will contain any flying parts. A hydraulic compression system would be much safer for use on a desk. Pneumatic compression vessels are normally used behind blast shields, for obvious safety reasons.
    This is exactly why they pump up lorry tyres in cages.

    • @DontScareTheFish

      So long as the water level is around what it was in this video, the amount of air going in is small though. Even at the stated 50m the 6x expansion of the air would be less than 1/2 of the tank
