    The Gen 1 Pokemon sort of make sense because they were hella cutting corners due to space constraints. It's part of the reason those games are such spaghetti under the hood. Some of the glitch Pokemon also have plagiarized cries, though they're often modulated in such a way that it's not as easy to tell.
    Later gens don't have that excuse. Well, maybe except for Gen 2, though I don't think it was nearly as bad for them. But all the ones from Gen 3 on...dang. They learned how to spread 'em apart for the most part, most of those copies are from Pokemon from different gens.

      Here's the thing. Cries are generated in a list which the game references. This list uses a base noise, pitch, and length as a way to make different cries. All Pokemon are listed on the list, including Missingnos.
      It wasn't really space constraints. It really was just laziness.

    • @dchill784
      @dchill784 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I don’t think it’s because they were cutting corners (not saying they don’t cut corners, just not on the cries). I’m sure original hardware had very poor quality speakers and as a result they were limited to simple “electronic” sounds and a limited amount of notes/tones. Probably hard to make 151 cries out of a limited section of electronic notes, and still have the result be decent

    I know why the crys were reused!
    For all the Gen 1-2 Pokémon, it was to save storage. The games came out on the Game Boy and Game Boy Color, both had to be compact in order to remain portable. Because of this, there is less space than a home console. Reusing cries with little to no change frees up more of that space so it can be used for other purposes.
    For later generations, this could likely just be a coincidence. After all, the later consoles allowed for more space.
    For Mew and Mewtwo, it could also be because Mewtwo shares genes with Mew, giving them similar cries.

    • @Dolthra
      @Dolthra 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      There could be some more in depth decision making to them as well. Like Fenniken and Zoroa having the same cry could be intentional due to their similar design aesthetics/zoroa's propensity for copying things. Likewise, Archops and Yvetal's similar cries could be intended to establish a thematic connection between the two. Similar things could be said about Magmortor and Volcanion or Noivern and Salazzle.

    I guess since the first released on GameBoy, they decided to go about programming the cries using a limited set of “segments”, which every cry used parts of with alterations in pitch, sample speed and noise level. This was understandable since the GameBoy had a very limited sound chip and storage space was expensive. Though, future games for the GBA would incorporate a similar sound design.
    It wasn't until the DS games that Pokemon started sounding more unique (Glameow and Starly actually sounded like a cat and bird respectively), but many would still use same set of segments, just sightly higher quality.

    If I remember from Pokered. Gen 1 creates their Cries by just modifying the length and pitches of one of a bunch of base noises.
    It's not memory constraints that stopped them from making unique noises for the Pokemon. Like Charizard and Rhyhorn. It was just laziness. As all pokemon in the game, even Missingno are listed in the Cries list.
