Nurse Joy will try and heal 65,535 pokemon, essentially.
Before the game straight up crashes yep
ACTUALLY it’s 0 Pokémon which overflows to 65,535 Pokémon as far as I know (I watched like 2 TheZZaZZGlitch videos and barely understood them)
Hope she gets paid well
@@meticakolli1237government employee, she’s eating well
@@fuseegelee At least in Generation 1 and 2, and most likely Gen 3, if the game handles 0 of something as a high number, it's because the game decrements the value in the code, resulting in it underflowing to 255/65535, which is handled as 256/65536 (since the code's decrementing the number in its handling)
This can either be decrementing it in order to index a table (for example, in Gen 1, Rhydon is Index number #1 but the game's data is 0-based, so the game decrements its index number to get that data. This is why Missingno. duplicates the 6th item slot, because the game treats Pokedex 000 as Pokedex 256, leading to the game indexing a buffer out of bounds.)
Or because, as happens most often in the case of no Pokemon, the game does a decrementing loop and decrements the number before checking if that number is 0, leading to an underflow and the loop running 256/65536 times.
It can also be, though less likely so, due to the game ignoring the end terminator of your party for a similar reason to the former; the game starts looping and checks data afterwards. I do not know if this is the case anywhere, however.

I imagine Queen just sucker punching the trainers lmao
Have you ever tried to punch a bird? That's why fighting is weak to flying and Pidgey wins.
@@steinthorAre you saying because the bird will just fly away from it? Because that's what I always thought, that Fighting types are weak to Flying because their punches can't reach an opponent that's flying in the air.
@@JoshTrager-j9g I mean, yeah. It's an old meme from a comic someone made about type weaknesses. I can't recall the comic, but that's the justification.

Professor Oak: "Go fish."
I'm designing a game with an Easy Mode, which essentially just removes all battles. Scripted battles, such as bosses, function how they would here in Gen II Pokemon-less. I didn't know that was a thing, but it's funny lol
Easy mode I'm geussing for your game is just an exploration mode, you can explore the areas and don't have to deal with playing the game. An interesting choice in a "Easy Mode" titled experience, but I shall let you work on your own thing. It would be funny to have one of the most difficult fights be only accessible in Easy Mode as some sort of secret thing and a possible challenge for people who completed the normal and I geuss hard difficulty (if your planning on those difficulties), I feel like you should probably make a heads up about the thing or only make the boss fight area only accessible after beating the other modes. You don't have to listen to me, I'm just throwing out a random idea my brain thought would be funny.
@@IronPikachu724 I tried to reply to this like three times, but TH-cam keeps deleting it for some reason.
A battle exclusive to Easy Mode would be funny, but would probably be confusing for players who aren't prepared for it. I don't know how I'm going to design the final boss on Easy yet, though.
If you want to check out the game yourself, I have a demo you can reach though my video descriptions.
You should call it "game journalist mode"
@@Vexnatos I was debating calling it "Story Mode", but there's also a setting that removes most of the text in the game, so I just went with Easy lol
A wild Swadloon appeared!
"Cool, let me stare at it forever."
The “glitchy Slowpoke” is actually nicknamed by the fans as “Decamark”
i like to imagine that in gen 2 the protagonist just flexes in front of every opponent and defeats them with sheer magnificence
Mogging
Gen 9's one is funnier because you literally have 3 Pokémon following you. You'd think at least one would step in lol
Oh heck yeah, an OP Bulbasaur!

"Well nope"
Don't you need badges if you want pokemon above a certain level to obey?
It's weird how almost none of the games have an actual failsafe for this situation, like I know it's basically impossible to do this normally but still
Yeah, you would've thought that by now they would've added something, even if they're impossible it's still surprising how the games either spectacularly bug out or just crash, I wonder how hard it would be to add in some failsafe for that
The way the music distorts in b/w would have given me nightmares as a kid
Sick of Johto's level curve and never ending grinding? Just go around without Pokémon! Everyone will just pity you and declare you the winner! Speedrunners will be jealous!
just make sure you get repels asap and you're good
The trainer and Swadloon awkwardly staring at each other got me.
The're just like: "well, shit."

"Errr, nice day huh?"
“Have you seen my Pokemon anywhere?”
You know what's funny? Bulbasaur's name at 8:03, ピカチュウ: it literally means "Pikachu" lol
That bulbasaur is a spy
I like to call it Bulbachu or something like that to make fun of the fact the Bulbasaur is name Pikachu.

don’t know if anyone else pointed this out, but the shiny bulbasaur’s name in the gen 6 games is the japanese name of pikachu
Who knew that the key to the strongest Pokemon team was having no Pokemon at all.
That's probably the reason nobody allows you to leave your home town without a Pokemon.
You would be too powerful.
(At least in Gen 2)
Fun Fact: One of the main reasons that Gens 1 and 2 are so “glitch-prone” as to speak is because of their code and the hardware they use. The Gameboy and Gameboy Color processors (Sharp SM83) are a mix of the 8080 and Z80 architectures. Z80 and 8080 assembly language relies a lot on memory, as “computer storage” wasn’t exactly popular in the 70’s. It was more of a niche add-on. A good example for this would be the Altair 8800 machine, which didn’t originally come with a means of storage. Since the Gameboy’s architecture was heavily dependent on memory, code could be easily manipulated… Or, think about it this way. Since the Gameboy is so heavily dependent on memory, rewriting a certain variable is like deleting an important file. Edit: This was a hypothetical question and it isn’t true. I thought so, but Ig I was going on a wild goose chase.
Every Gameboy game has an arbitrary code execution glitch somewhere. You just have to know where to look for them. And many have yet to be found.
not really. rewriting variables on a z80 is just that: rewriting variables. the equivalent of the game files can't be rewritten. modern hardware probably also crashes if the entire memory is overwritten, it just doesn't let that happen. the game boy pokemon games are buggy because of a combination of no error checking and straight-up bad code. of course, code-data seperation helps avoid a lot of bugs, but lacking it doesn't cause bugs unless your code is doing something wrong. saying they're buggy because of a reliance on memory is just not quite correct.
🤓
@@wildreamer2508 youre just embarassing yourself right now.
@@lucasgreer1736”the equivalent of the game files can’t be rewritten”, because it’s ROM. You could probably make an entirely different game in memory though and run it.
Okay, but now I really want to see a NoPokemon% speedrun of G/S/C
I feel like gen 2 had the most elegant solution to this dilemma lol
Nah ColoXD do
I find it funny how in xd despite having no pokemon the shadow radar will still pop.
It's like "oh hey a pokemon to use wait what are you doing STOP"
Gen 3 Nurse Joy: I can heal that Glitch Slowpoke! Wait, hold up, something isn't right.
In the Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Demo versions, if you use the walk thru walls cheat code and find a Pokémon center, deposit your Roselia in a PC, come back to Rowan and he will evolve the first Pokémon in your party to a --. If you open up your Pokémon menu the game crashes. But if you battle with that Pokémon only in your party the game breaks.
When you defeat pokemon without pokemon in Yellow, you'll be teleported to black void with some creepy stuff (broken sprites, talking pikachu or nurse joy who will send you back home). It doesn't happens everytime but this is possible.
In gen 3 if you pick up an egg and go to the battle without pokemon but only egg (wild pokemon or trainer), you will send wynaut with an egg palette.
One thing I noticed in the Dppt games, is Missigno's name seems to be composed of the last character on the previous text box, repeated as many times as possible
8:03 no, it’s so strong it vaporizes both you and the opponent at the same time, hence why you *Black out*
If the Swadloon is female, Nate and Swadloon can marry. Also, Gen 5 and gen 9 got awkward and funny stares.
I want to make a game were you travel linearly without a party at first and the option to make it all the way to the end as well. Like the Oregon trail. You can catch some, but you would have to do that voluntarily.

Team rocket: wow 😃, infinite Pokémon, let's do this glitch now
3:04 did it just… play the shiny animation?
I think so
A ton of generations with Missingno. play the shiny animation.
That's because an empty slot is all zeros. 0000 PID and 0000 OTID means the pokemon will be shiny
Wait a moment, she made her Drifblim use explosion inside the Pokémon Center!?
Yeah... kinda

Would be funny if we could just casually empty our party and get a special pokemon that way.

I guess the op shiny bulbasaur was for testing
I’m I the only one who wants MissingNo to be canon some how?
We need a 3d missingno that isn't a flat piece of paper
I remember people wanting Porygon-Z to get a Mega that was essentially Missingno. The Mega Evolution would completely corrupt its code and would appear as the glitchy mess.
For the gen three one it's more of a bulbasaur than slowpoke since it learns bulba moves and is a bulba in contests
6:42 Wait… Isn’t your pokemon still in the healing station a.k.a Nurse Joy just robbed you of your precious pokemon.
I like how in gen 3 theres just a ton of pokeballs as if youre handing nurse joy a bunch of empty unused ones while looking for the one that actually contains a pokemon. "Its gotta be in here somewhere" and nurse joy is testing all of them
I also like in gen 7 how its like shes playing pretend with a small child.
Trainer mimes handing over pokeball
Nurse joy mimes putting it in the machine then handing it back
"There you go lil guy, your pokemon is all healed up"
I LOVE POKÉMON! THX FOR MAKING THIS VID!!!

3:31 🤣🤣🤣 Pokeballs Cloning everywhere!!
8:00 Shiny mega Bulbasaur!!!
8:03, this "ピカチュウ" is literally pikachu in japanese writing lol
Im geussing X/Y and (S/M)/(US/UM) utalize the placeholder that Im geussing they use to help out with informational UI and send out animations for these 2 games. The only reason I'm geussing this is the fact that they have the level at a 3 digit number, the health at a 3 digit number, a slightly space-taking name, the Pokémon being shiny to test the shiny animation playing (I geuss they have 2 versions of this, but this one is used as the placeholder), and in Kalos's case, the Mega Evolved symbol on the UI. With that given evidence for visual looks, it seems it is just to act as a reference for their UI, especially when going from 2D to 3D
Professor Oak was right. Don’t go into the Grass without a Pokémon
Gen 1 also does the same thing as gen 3 when healing Pokémon but with glitchy tiles, because you don't actually have 0 Pokémon. You are under the minimum of Pokémon you're supposed to have, so you came back full circle and have 255 glitchy Pokémon, and the Pokémon Center adds a Poké Ball for every Pokémon.
5:45
SHINYYYYYY!!!
It's ridicule Game Freak didn't add team checks in gen8 and 9 games to prevent crashes.
8bit game GSC has them, but today's Switch games just crash.
Kind of a lame way to handle it tbh, except for the Bulbasaur which is cool I guess, but I would have at least named it “EMERGENCY BACKUP BULBASAUR” or something funny. Whenever I write code and I’m coding a scenario that should never happen I always make it print something like “great, you broke it”
Been waiting for this one
Dude gen 3 music is always awesome
I think the pokemon centers that just keep going are being told to count up to the number of pokemon you have then stop at that number and play the healing animation but since you start at zero pokemon when you count up it never hit the flag that all pokemon are put in the machine so it just keep counting up most likely until it hits integer overflow
"Wild ︎ ︎ ︎ ︎ ︎ ︎

Nurse Joy in gen 7 does the equivalent of pretending to go check in the back if they have it.

This is so cool, thx for this experiment and video
Excellent video
I love how they at first didn't handle any issues and game just reads garbage it has at designated memory address, hence glitching. Then they went to having all errors and exceptions handled somehow. And at some point latter they just gave up on handling those errors, except programing language got more sophisticated and old shenanigans are no go anymore, so they crash with unhandled error. And for old shenanigans that were ok and aren't now, best example is how old DRM used to work, which was that it literally worked the same way as hacking and injecting code into separate processes, which is bit like what malware would do. But because security in 90s was kind of at the end of 459th page of priorities, that was fine. Today this is huge no go, hence why some old games won't run because security in Windows will be just like "no". But old stuff will be more akin to just executing whatever or just making sense of whatever nonsense it finds. Like if you try saving one type of data as wrong type, new programing languages will complain about type mismatch. Old ones will just do the conversion, no matter if it is right, wrong or whatever. It probably won't do what you want it, but compiler will see no issue, it will be like "not my job, I found way to compile it". :-D

Honestly a force crash could be intended to prevent autosave saving you in with an empty party in swsh. Not sure why they didn't do that in sv too though
I wonder if there is any glitches to have 0 pokemon in your party in gen 2. Although a credits warp already exists so it wouldn’t be much use in a speed run
