Thanks for the video. The thing I don't understand is that the original wiring harness with original vw radio powered off with ignition. However harness I bought online has same problem ie aftermarket (atoto) stereo stats on. Surely there is ignition based power in existing wiring in dash?
Mk5 golfs run an older canbus system that doesn't fully recognise the head unit canbus system, because of this the radio canbus doesn't recognise ignition off. These vw specific units were designed around mk6 canbus
i tapped into fuse #5 (first row), which was empty originally. it made the stereo turn off when i turn off the car, which is great but the check engine light came on as well :( any idea why this happened?? i have a 2014 volkswagen passat
Nice informative video,i have one doubt my car is 2013 polo and i installed rcd330 stereo while it need to be off my pressing the radio rather than the ignition switch,if i wire from the cigarette lighter to the safe pin, will it solve the problem
Yes it's safe to wire to thr cig lighter....but an rcd330 should work off the ignition switch, if you are turning it off at the unit then it's not shutting down fully. My guess is it's a cheap Chinese copy of RCD330
Any car auto supplier will stock piggy back fuses, I just added a length of 20 gauge wire, again this will be available in auto parts shops. Go to top row of fuse 1-6 not 15 like I did in my video.
My Scirrocco is fitted with Eonon VWA12 but the radio will only work with ignition lights on if the engine is off. If I turn the key to where the ignition lights go off the radio mutes and will not come back on until I turn the radio off and back on. Any ideas?
is the yellow wire the only wire that needs cutting into i’ve ordered a piggy back fuse as my screen is always on even if the cars of and it’s draining my battery
Yes the yellow wire is 12v, that's the one you cut....check your wire harness for a small black plug connector between to wires, black and red, unplug it and it should turn off with the ignition.
hi mate i’ve got 2006 golf but not a gti and i don’t have the thick yellow wire on the original wiring harness so where should i splice the piggyback fuse into
Hello Dave mate quick question what other fuses in the mk5 golf is ignition live I’ve looked everywhere on google and can’t find a straightforward answer cheers
Hello I have polo 2007 model I tried to fit aftermarket stereo and adapter and I plugged in and it did not turn on and there was two wire red. And orange one side it was connected to adapter and another side I don’t know where to connect it says ignition on red wire so do I need to connect to fuse or ignition? Is that the problem?
Mate i have the same issue for my 2007 polo i brought a aftermarket double din brought a vw wiring harness and have a red and orange but mine turns on then off then on again ill also take the key out and the radio will still stay on playing music i can do most things but when it comes to wires im lost 😂😂

@@whatsdavedone104 Yes mate, used the same one as you did in the video. Car has had a parasitic draw since I bought it and I suspected it might have been the radio. Will have to wait and see and hope this has solved the issue. 🤞
I HAVE A 2013 POLO. AND BECAUSE MY WHEEL HAS NO BUTTONS. THE ANDROID I INSTALLED DOESN'T OPEN WITH THE KEY IGNITION, IT MAY BE FIXED FOR JUST ONE DAY BY ITSELF AND AFTER A FEW HOURS IT DOESN'T WORK. MAY THIS BE THE SOLUTION? THE ONE YOU POST. (POLO 2013)
Yes it could be the solution....sounds to me like you may have a sticking micro swith in your ignition barrel....squirt some silicone spray in the barrel and slide key in and out a few times
I plugged my radio in, and it turns on. The problem that i have is, that the radio turns of after 15 minutes and it wont turn on again. Also if i put my car in ignition, and i turn it of again, the radio wont turn on. Only if i wait for a few minutes, then the radio will turn on again but only for 15 min. Do you have a solution? Thanks
@MrEdgas10 if you hard wire you should still be able to have all the canbus information, you would just be moving the ignition live away from canbus system 😉

Hi Dave, great video exactly what I need! Just wondering where I can get the piggy back fuse that will be long enough? I’m based in Ireland.
Any car auto supplier will stock piggy back fuses, I just added a length of 20 gauge wire, again this will be available in auto parts shops. Go to top row of fuse 1-6 not 15 like I did in my video.
@@whatsdavedone104 Hi Dave, How do I know which fuse to take out and input to the piggy back fuse. Or should I just insert a new fuse to it??
@cathalpower4741 you need to fuses in the piggy back, one for the hardwire and 1 for the original you have removed to replace with the piggy back
@@whatsdavedone104 I’m unsure which one I need to remove as I don’t have a fuse box diagram
@cathalpower4741 any fuse on top row of fuses, they are all ignition live...I generally use fuse 4 as there is more space for the piggy back fuse

You don't splice the original harness, you spice the yellow wire that comes with the harness supplied with the head unit
thank you so much mate life saver
@@whatsdavedone104also what amp fuse did you use and also what size
10 amp micro fuse
Did you manage to get the ac controls working everthing else does but no ac controls mk5 gti same unit as urs in video tnx
AC controls don't work on these units in MK5 because they are designed around the MK6 canbus system.
Do you need to put a second fuse into the piggy back ?
Yes, one for piggy back and 1 for original fuse
Hey buddy do i need to cut the yellow on mine or the red
Do you have a link to the unit you are installing?
99% of units it's the yellow wire that is the 12v to the unit.

Go to fuse 4 on top row...I messed up in the video as at the time fuse 16 had no power.

20amp wire
