Thank you, Ted, for this wonderful video. I own a 1979 240d with over 526,000 original miles and it is still going strong. I just love these cars and will always cherish them. You take care of them and they will take care of you.
Just landed a 77 240 that's been in storage since 1986, only 80k miles. 3rd one we've owned and this one's actually nice lol. In 40 years I hope to be making the same comment!!
In 1979 I drove from UK to northern Germany to visit family stationed there in the army. Every other car on the autobahns seemed to be a W123. They were so popular over there.
Here in the uk,i was a fool to let go of my 300D, i had for 13 years,an engine i had looked after with many, many oil changes, now running a 200D,will continue to look for a 300,a real robust motor, and in Europe more choice because of the left hand drive,a little harder here.a good video. Dank u vell.
The car is all about engineering quality. They were very well made but we must acknowledge that the purchase price reflected the quality. You gt what you paid for back then. By the way your hydrangea look fantastic - such a well engineered plant as well! they withstand just about any amount of frost but do keep them watered
Best vehicle review that I have heard. I learnt a lot. Thank you. In so many ways better than my present 2014 C220 AMG Sport. I owned a W123 280 TE for eight years in the 80s. Beautiful vehicle. So solid. So well made. It felt Indestructible and I felt that if I were to have an accident this was the car to be in. My W204 feels frail by comparison. Built down to a price I guess.
@@stephenfoxall9655 Thank you. 😊 I easily get carried away by focusing on minute technical details. Cost engineering meaning as taking ratio of consumer value to carried cost has been driving industries ever since the 90’s - for a reason, but not for all consumers as some appreciate more solidness and durability 😉
@@tedppp I agree with what you say. The general trend is towards the fat cats getting fatter at the expense of the person in the street. Thing is money means for me that when I replace a vehicle I’m looking at 10 year olds but of course what you say is also true for cars of that age. Why oh why did I sell my W123 2.8TE and W124 2l petrol. Well I moved abroad is the answer but wrongly we moved back to UK a few years ago. Would swop my W204 220 AMGSport anytime but unfortunately I would have to part with a load of cash as well. 😢
I forgot to add that mine is pastel grey with the blue mbtext interior, looks almost white on the outside. Sunny California has left mine virtually rust free which is nice. I use to own a 1982 300d turbo and regret selling it but hoping to find another
Yes, this is typical especially when ATF is hot. I deliberately adjusted to get my gearbox more shifting later and consequently have 1st gear always engaging when stopping; this gives more dynamic take off, especially in modern traffic.
Built when Mercedes experts engineered the car, and told the accountants how much it costs, sadly like everything else these days, built down to a price point ❤
I really like much more round front reflectors. Besides those reflectors are steel wheels with color fitting rim covers are original to the specification of my car.
Greetings from the US! Nice reveiw. What year is your 123? And, since it is not a turbo-powered model, do you find it is too slow for you to get up to speed? Love the dog in the rear shelf!
These headlight always confuses me, I know they are European but are they offered as an option or are they model year specific for the W123? .. I remember back in the early eighties were our streets were full of them, except a blue W123 belongs to our neighbour with these strange headlamps, I'm confused since then!
The turbo 300d does it perfectly fine, although revs quite high. non-turbo 300d will eventually get there, while 240d need a bit of a tailwind or decline for those speeds :)
@@tolly-m I haven’t tried, but suppose it would run. As long as diesel fuel has sufficient lubrication and cetane number, I don’t see objections to make the old diesel lower CO2 emission.

Finding a good one 300d is super difficult, also here on the continent. These engines were the working horses and not many survived.
Nice interior color. Same interior as mine W123 CD.

Loads of them here in Thailand, great upload. My girlfriend's parents have a W123 and a W124
Best car ever built
Classic unmistakable car getting rare in Britain.
White with blue is a great colour
Congrats on your 123 Mercedes. My auto gearbox starts off in 2 nd gear and shifts up to 3 and 4 gears. 1 st gear is not selected unless in L mode .!

1980, it is most pleasurable for driving on A and B roads; 80km/h is ideal and acceleration till that speed is sufficient.

Ja, klopt. Het werkt zoals een beetje gas pedal indrukken dus stationair toerental verhogen en makkelijk opstarten.

Do you think that your car will be able to cruise comfortably at 120 kmph on the highway in my country ?
