Owned a 1985 Audi 80 Sport in Mars Red with steel sunroof between 1987 and 1994 - Reg B133 NGW. Brilliant car - essentially a four door sleeper GTI with a boot - Happy Memories.
I had an '86 Jetta GT, which really was a Golf GTi with a boot.. (Only the badge was missing the I, the I was defiantly on the engine!) it was quicker than my mates black 80 Sport and even more of a sleeper
Old McDonald (Peter Jones) had a farm, and on that farm, he had Two Audi sports, Two Range Rovers and a Discovery. Another just brilliant barn find video, from the legend that is Jonny Smith. No better way to round off the week, thanks Jonny & Pete. 👍🙂👍
Thanks Johnny : your ch, has been keeping me going all week I haven’t been well all week & watching your show has kept me cool & going : lots of love keep up the great work x
Yes Johnny, just got home from an afternoon out with the grandson and what have I got? A barn find from you, having a beer too, loving your work, keep it up✌️
In 1996 I had a 1990 80 sport as a taxi in Newcastle. Same lump as an 8v golf gti and it was a beautiful pearlescent blue and came with the gauges in the centre console and split rim alloys the same as a Quattro. So smooth and quick. I loved it.
@@TheLateBrakeShow unfortunately not as it was crashed into not long after I got it and I was gutted,so it was de-taxied, repaired and sold on and replaced by a cavalier Gsi 16v (glacier white, lovely) which was even quicker, especially after I tweaked it a bit with a few mods 😉. That taxiied for 2 years, back when we could afford to run taxis on petrol.
Wow what a thing ! I remember being 14 and a family friend of my dad's pulled up in a grey one of these and we all thought it was such a piece of prestige sportiness at the time. Think about it everyone else's dad including mine were running cortinas, cavaliers, allegro 's etc... and then this pulls up! Thanks for keeping bringing that nostalgia back! Top episode.
Wow. One of the best cars I ever owned . Owned a red C plate Audi 80 sport in 1991 I think. As a young lad it was a seriously fast, smooth drive. I remember the gear change was so slick and it had a beautiful factory smell inside. The 3 gauges made it even more sporty . I recall it's had brown tweed cloth seats? Not sure now ... Either way I loved it and it made its mark as I've owned way too many cars that didn't. When it was jet washed ....just magic to watch!!!
Always liked the 80 Sport & that'll be lovely with a little recommissioning. Barn finds, can't beat them, pulses start racing when you're wearing the BFF in the intro. Well done Pete for putting it away properly
Hi Jonny, what a find, nice guy and brilliant cars, I have to say your brave cranking theses cars up with cambelts that haven't moved in 20 odd years. The Audi would be a cracking restoration car, cleaned up really well. Great video, really enjoyed it. Alex.
Loved this. Real trip down memory lane. I had TEH 457X, a 1981 quad headlight gun metal Coupe GT, followed by a 2.2 coupe ‘platinum blue’ double headlight D439 NBW like the 80 sport (which also had the internal audi coupe window stickers), and finally a red ur quattro 2.1 10v D279 RKJ with split rim gold BBS wheels, which had quattro in the rear windows. ❤ this episode
My late father and his business partner bought Audis each in 1984 the partner bought a similar sport yet my father opted for the SC I was gutted as a 12 year old. Thanks for the memories great barn find very personal and nostalgic for me
I had a Graphite Grey one in the early 90s, still remember the reg B393OBY , affectionately known as Boby ! It was a lovely car to own and drive, quick enough for a 20 year old at the time and a bit different to all my mates Golfs and 205s 😊 Thanks for the video and a trip down memory lane 👍🏻
What a car! I had a white one in the 80’s, loved it. A real wolf in sheeps clothing with that gti engine. A family friend saw it soon after i bought it and said, “when you want to sell it, let me know and i will pay whatever you want for it!” He bought it a few yews later and yes, he paid what I asked. I should have kept it!
I had a Y reg one of these from 95-2000 EVH849Y. Coupe cookie cutter alloys and no side rubbing strips. Model launched to celebrate Audis rallying success. 1.8dz engine code and only difference was a finned alloy sump instead of a steel one on the golf. I’d love another! Brilliant to see and good luck!
Great Jonny, fond memories came flooding back. I used to own an almost identical 80 sport on a C plate, mine had the tweet style cheque interior. A bit of a wolf in sheep’s clothing back in the day. Drop a cog on the bypass watch the front end lift like a speed boat. Wish I’d kept it happy days. Love the barn finds keep em coming.
Nice to see Shropshire on the Late Brake Show. We have a lot of hidden classics in this county for sure. Always worth rubber necking into open barns when out running / cycling through the countryside here. Nice.
Jeezos she cleaned up so beautifully! The whole audi 80 lineup is so close to my heart, absolutely loved every bit of this episode so huge thank yous! Grew up with a 91 model, such great cars.
This video reminded me of my Grandfather who bought a brand new, brown Audi Fox in 1978. This thing was like a spaceship to 11 year old me having grown up being carted around in 1970s American behemoths. The trunk (boot) of his car was full of spares and, most importantly, the Audi factory shop manual. 500 pages of glorious black and white exploded views of every single bit of the car. I would spend hours poring over this tome every time he and my Grandmother would visit from the City. A couple of years later, we picked up a '78 Ford Fiesta (my first car, after the '75 Impala I learned to drive in hung up its spurs), inspired, no doubt by Granpar's Audi. Thanks for this video!
Had one of these (same Zeimat Silver, decals and Ronals) back in the day, it’s still on the DVLA but no MOT history, so must also be in a barn somewhere. fabulous vehicle. Thanks Johnny, great memories..!
This was an interesting watch. I had 2 new Golf Turbo Diesels, one in 86 the 2nd in 87. In 88 when our 3rd child came along I decided I couldn’t afford to run a new car any more. The diesel Golf was so popular that the VW dealership bought it back off me for a good price. While I tried to find a decent used car they loaned me a red one of those 80s. It was a lovely thing to drive, but in the end I chose practicality & went for a Passat estate. I can still remember the smile that resulted from touring around in that Audi. 👍
29:11 The moment all the Car Perverts were waiting for 😂 That car cleaned up sooo nice! The owner was clearly a good custodian, and Audi seems to have made a solid car given the resources they had compared to peers at the time. #teamfootpump
That VW/Audi 1.8L 8v is bulletproof. I have my original 1986 Scirocco with 350k miles and I’ll I’ve ever had to do was to change the timing belt and water pump.
I loved this one. i had an 80SC from the same year in metallic green and put about 250,000 miles on it before she was finally scrapped at 350,000 miles. It was probably the most reliable car I have ever owned and I can only remember replacing one light switch. Other than that it was unbreakable and served me so well. I do remember that the headlights were really dim so I can understand why the spots were fitted.
After hitting my head numerous times on a partially open garage door I winced everytime you passed under it! Another great vid of a car I wished I'd bought.
I owned a 80 sport of the same year back in the early 90s. In red which, I think, was the most popular colour at that time but used to go a bit flat over the years. Galvanised, which was a big plus-point. That lovely long-stroke GTi engine was a joy. I'd have one now as a daily driver.
Had the same in red, i was hoping the donor car would get uncovered, 94 to around 96 before she rusted out, great memories driving to France for holidays, thanks Jonny and Pete....
For a few years from about ‘98-03 I had a 1983 80 Quattro…what is referred to as the KK engined car, with the 5 cylinder 2144cc engine…what a fantastic car to drive. Same colour as the car in this video. I really wish I hadn’t got rid of it….so rare now.
I remember my brother had a blue 85 when I had my 84 m5. That Audi was a great machine. That one got me into Audi. I still have a few, my b8.5 s4 and my b7 rs4, b8 a4. I’ve had more then 250 different Audi over the years, the b7 has been the longest owned.
I had a car wash round when I was a kid and I used to wash one of these. That and a lovely black Scirocco both on the same street were my favourites. I used to dream about owning them, never did sadly.
We had these in the States but they were 4000s - my father in law had a 1986 4000S Quattro Sedan, in line 5 cylinder engine, locking diffs and 5 speed manual, fully optioned in dark graphite over black leather. FANTASTIC car, virtually unstoppable in any road conditions or inclement weather. And yes, they are now very rare. LOVE these cars!
These Barn finds never fail, to have me with tears in eyes seeing this lovely Audi sport come out of its sleeping shelter and be once again shown a little love and tender care I always had a soft spot for classic Audi would love a 80 Quattro but only got a original factory jacket from the team Great video Jonny 😊
Had two 4000S Quattro's. Oh, the memories. Test drove the keeper, once owned by the regional rep for Audi USA. BBS wheels, 5 speed manual Black with tan interior. Got out on I-85 in Atlanta to 2-285... no brakes. Nothing. I said not a word. Drove back in the rain. $1000 for the car became $400. I drove it home to the mountains of NC and fixed it over the weekend. I kept a box of door handle kits in the trunk. I could fix them pdq.
Don't forget to thank Tony for how happy we are to enjoy his VEHICLE SAVINGS... ALL REALLY GOOD FINDS 🎉😂 and of course, thanks again for a fun presentation 😊
This was one of the first cars I ever drove back in 84. Very underrated when everyone was going for Cavalier SRis. Apart from the engine, what made this car was the relatively low ratio gearbox which allowed it to make the most of the modest power available.
Thank you, Jonny, for this easy and unruffled re-animation of this Giugiaro-designed classic. The four-door model and Coupe are the essence of Rallying in the mid 1980s and here in North America sales reflected their popularity/practicality. I was surprised to read the seemingly modest horsepower figures on the screen, but as I recall, 110-130 horsepower was typical for cars in this era. This one stands out in all its stickered and bespoilered glory. Love the Ronal wheels and Rally lights, too!
This is cool to see since i own a 80 2L B4 1995. Tho mine was a shelf before my ownership(alot of scratches and dings but low milage and not mutch rust on it) but its great fun to drive you really feel the car not like todays modern cars. Fun to see a car from 83 in this great shape.
As a VW/Audi fan a great barn find, as always epic work Jonny always enjoy, keep it up every barn find upload is great fully appreciate the effort involved 👍
Love this episode It brought back memories of my first Audi 80 in the early 90,s I loved that car but did trade up to the newer shape eventually One is for certain I miss cars like this that you could actually work on without too much fuss Beautiful
Great video! Great cars! Ran one of these, a 1983 80 Sport / GTE in Alpine white for several years and over 100,000 miles in the early 90s - commuting back and forth daily from Bracknell to Cheltenham and then weekly to Bourne in Lincolnshire, as well as towing a race car all around the country. First job I did to it was the strip off those cheesy Audi Sport stripes! Fitted Konis, MXV2s and Ur quattro wishbones and front anti-roll bar, also 256mm front disc upgrade. Ran in Sprint at GTI International and track days at Curborough. Traded it in for a 1983 80 quattro... Fond memories!
Love it. I had the same shape 80 Quattro back in the late 90s when i was a student. Bought for £350! Such a good car, never went wrong. Can you imagine an 18 year old student getting insurance on an equivalent model Audi now?! 😂
Lovely find Jonny. I think the glass sunroof is aftermarket. I had a 1983 Audi Coupe GT, they had a steel moon roof as did the 80 CD, don't think Sport got a sunroof until the facelift model a year, or two later.
Back in the 80’s when I was in high school my Grade 10 Economics teacher had an Audi 4000 Quattro which is what this car was sold as here in Canada. It was a gorgeous deep blue with silver alloys and I lusted after that car. Haven’t seen any around here in decades so this was a fun video to remember Mr. Msi’s car. And he was a truly great teacher so that made it even better 😊
Humbled by the lovely comments and thanks to Jonny and team for a fantastic day - and yes - Jonny genuinely as nice off screen as on !!!

These Barn finds never fail, to have me with tears in eyes seeing this lovely Audi sport come out of its sleeping shelter and be once again shown a little love and tender care
I always had a soft spot for classic Audi would love a 80 Quattro but only got a original factory jacket from the team
Great video Jonny 😊
Had two 4000S Quattro's. Oh, the memories. Test drove the keeper, once owned by the regional rep for Audi USA. BBS wheels, 5 speed manual Black with tan interior. Got out on I-85 in Atlanta to 2-285... no brakes. Nothing. I said not a word. Drove back in the rain. $1000 for the car became $400. I drove it home to the mountains of NC and fixed it over the weekend. I kept a box of door handle kits in the trunk. I could fix them pdq.
Sounds like a mega car for the money
Wonderful car and so good to see it out in the sunlight. Hope he gets it back o the road.
A friend of mine had an 80 sport which he called the ‘silver bullet’ loved that car !!
Had an '85 Audi 90 for a while, essentially the same car but with the wonderful 2.2l 5-cylinder unit. It was a delight.
Love my old 80 Sport - 1986 C31HOF in white. Had it for years and did my mate after me
Thank you, Jonny, for this easy and unruffled re-animation of this Giugiaro-designed classic.
I really do enjoy your barn finds (and all your other content). Jonny, one of the greatest motoring journalists in my opinion 👍🏼
Such a good looking car. Often i'm not a fan of Decals but they really work so well on this.
As a VW/Audi fan a great barn find, as always epic work Jonny always enjoy, keep it up every barn find upload is great fully appreciate the effort involved 👍
My old boss in 1988 had an Audi 80 Sport ... loved it
My dad had an Audi 80 in the early 70's, CTJ 617E can always remember the number plate.
Love this episode
It brought back memories of my first Audi 80 in the early 90,s
I loved that car but did trade up to the newer shape eventually
One is for certain I miss cars like this that you could actually work on without too much fuss
Beautiful
First one I've enjoyed in quite a while. Well done Jonny (and gracious owner). 👍
A forgotten classic, I remember one locally and completely forgot the existence of such a beauty. 👍
I'd forgotten what a good looking car the 80 Sprt was. Great vid and I hope the car is sympathetically restored to origional spec.
I knew it was an 80 sport from the quick glimpse through the side of the garage, liked the look of these more than the coupe
What a really nice guy... and well done Jonny.
Great watch this, and what a nice bloke Pete is. Some real classics.
I used to own a blue one of these in the 90's and loved it, wish I could of held on to it!
One of the local farmers had a white one with white wheels I recall back in the eighties. Brilliant car
