I know nothing about Duramax...much less any diesel truck. I would like to find something within my "old man, retired, and poor" budget to pull my 5th wheel with. I currently have a 6.0 GMC that will do the job on the flats but when into any hills, she will grunt. (the Alison trans is a good option too) I definitely need to watch more of your videos to understand what LGBTQ, LLY, BMT, XYZ, and all the other Duramax acronyms mean.
Honest dealer. Thanks guys for the information to us guys out here. I’m a fleet mechanic got my experience on duramax since the whole fleet are the 6.6L. I’m thinking of getting one for myself, feels good to see that there are honest dealers out there.
FYI:: They are right and wrong about the smoke! White means your burning coolant (bad headgasket). Blue haze means your burning oil (bad rings). Black means your burning access fuel (bad injectors). The darker it is the worse it is. Hope that help someone with their diagnoses.
@@VincentoftheRolleri most likely they tampered the odo, no lbz with that much miles will ever go for anything under 35k. I’ve seen that plenty of times. A buddy of mine got a smoking deal like that and turned out it was indeed to good to be true
Collapsed upper radiator hose most of the time is a coolant tank cap getting gummed up with crusty dexcool. Soak it in hot soapy water for a while and rinse with hot water then blow it off with some compressed air. Happend to me in my LLY and LB7 this fixed the problem. Definitely could be other problems also stated in the video but always start with the easy stuff first👍🏼
I am an owner of a LLY Chevy 2500 HD 2005 Silverado Duramax, almost like what you own and last but not least, Thank you my fellow comrade for your service, Corporal E-4, 2nd platoon, Bravo Battery, 3/5 Air defense Artillery Regiment, 2nd Battalion, Third armored Division, US Army Germany. 1985-1990...."HUUAAH!!
Just got an 07 LBZ. Verified VIN engine code. It's a crew cab with a long bed. All stock minus CAT. 240K miles. Checks out fine, just a few interior discrepancies I'll have to fix. Got it for 10K with a trade in. Edit: Live in Bama and bought in Bama. No rust.
One more thought, the transfer cases on some trucks have a pump rub issue, this will shut you down in a hurry! If it leaks, or you get a strange oil splatter on your tailgate take preemptive action before the internals self destruct!
I bought a super clean 1 owner 07 crew cab lbz fully loaded with 76000 miles on it about 2 months ago for $15000. I'm absolutely loving it. Feel like I got a great deal on it.
Additional considerations: #1 check the title and find out where it was prior to the respective lot you are browsing... many trucks get shipped around the country, flood vehicles are everywhere! #2 don't drive anything off a lot with promises, even if put in writing, ensure the issues are corrected prior to accepting any vehicle. #3 blistered paint usually means body rot, rust and blistered paint is a definite sign of serious body issues - it's often cheaper to replace the entire bed of a truck VS repairing a portion of the bed. #4 being many folks don't have personal diagnostic systems... take a test drive and stop by an auto-parts place that does free scanning, have them plug it in. And...don't purchase a used Duramax from Byers Chevrolet in Columbus Ohio. I invested $35,000.00 in a Chevy 2500 HD with 98000 miles and a clean interior... in less than a year, by their estimate, $9900.00 in needed body repair for what they cited as surface rust on the bed, rockers, and corners, in addition to numerous electrical issues, issues they claimed didn't exist at the time of purchase.
I realize this is an older video, 4 years at this point, but A LOT of great information. I just recently purchased a 2019 2500 HD L5P crew cab, and man do I love this vehicle. I bought an 05 GMC Sierra 3500, crewca long bed WT, 158k miles for 18k with the iffy aftermarket warranties. Truck was 14,999 beforehand. I checked as much as I could before I bought, excepted there to be a wee bit of work as it was used and came off a ranch. Ran great, drove great checked exhaust etc, as mentioned for color and all. After 4 months the injection pump completely took a crap. Luckily the iffy aftermarket warranty will cover it, but nothing else. So still looking at 5k out of pocket. It is my first personal Diesel, so not super stoked but staying positive.
Cool video for the sales guy to be pointing out his truck flaws and telling people what to look for. I should call him as im new to wanting a diesel and would have alot of questions.
The weep hole is intended to allow extra lubricant from the pump bearings to drip out of the water pump housing. Without this hole, the oil would be forced past the water pump seal and get into the engine coolant.
My dad almost bought an lb7 Sierra it was a good condition all around truck but she blew so much blue smoke so we ended up buying an lly keep up the good work
Great video on Alex. Honest and trustworthy. Id buy a truck from him Any day. Im in market for a diesel. But have to get it shipped. See how that goes.
i have a 2005 duramax 6.6l hd for almost 5 years now. I have replaced the wheel bearings ( could hear the tires wobble on the road at slow speeds) the water pump, power steering pump, injectors, brake booster, and most commonly that damned fuel filter head assembly
I do instrument cluster rebuilds even when they are completely dead. I also can do mileage adjustments for trucks with replacement instrument clusters.
Look under the cap. If you push hard enough, you'll understand that the cap holds the pressure relief valve. That feeds that hose right next to the cap. I guess you could find pressure lower than the limit imposed by the pressure relief valve on the coolant reservoir cap.
There’s a lot to check for! But hey if you get one that was maintained well, it will last forever. Exterior- Check the frame, especially where the spare tire goes. The bed rails and feel up behind the fender wells. If the trucks high enough try to poke your head up under there. The obvious cab/rockers. If it’s a white truck, check for paint flaking, GM did a horrible job. I believe there was a recall back in the day.
I found this video informative even if don't own a diesel truck, I'm pretty sure I was the only gasser at your last truck meet....but I made up for that by being the only red GMC 2500 HD truck there. lol Thanks for sharing, peace out. Al
Keep’em coming and make a series TruckMaster. Not in the market, but I do have a 2015 LML with 150k and it’s nice to have an idea what to check on periodically going forward. Thank you sir for the content.
if that upper hose is compressed most of the time the fill cap to the rad tank needs scrub out with mild soapy water, and maybe a light soak before scrubbing .. thanks
Hi , have been looking to buy a duramax next years and watch your video start helping me understand way better how the engin work and what to look for when buying used .Will continu to watch cause I want to learn hoe to repair myself my futur duramax looking for 2006 to 2009 thankx body hi fallow you from Quebec 🤘🤘👌
Thanks for the heads up! Wish I had seen this prior to buying my 04 Sierra duramax! I will add : Unless you have deep pockets stay away from Diesel trucks:-( their money pits for sure!
Great video it helped a lot when I was looking for one I purchased a 2006 GMC Sierra SLT 2500 HD duramax 6.6 turbo LLY engine no blow-by it has 325.000km. It needs rocker panels on each side I’m getting quotes from $2000.00 to $9,500.00. HopefullyI can find a better price this summer or someone that does the rocker panels on the side.
I watched a few videos on upgrades he appears very honest not feeding you a bunch of bullshit like some videos out there I had a problem with no fuel on startup well I watched a video that cured that problem with a rebuild kit on the primer head on top of your fuel filter I bought the kit basically o rings to replace and problem solved no more bleed back of fuel and that your truck has to spin over way more then it should to build up fuel pressure and start another thing is a simple way to check what glow plugs are bad without removing the plugs first and testing continuity with a multitester etc also test with 12 volt battery to see how long it takes to get red hot careful not to go over board with this test or you will burn out the heating element and you'll need to purchase a new one.
when jacked up you can also use a bigger pry bar under the tire and try to lift up and down on the bar and it should not wiggle or knock if everything is good :)
Side to side it's tie rod up and down its ball joint wheel bearing it's how loose the wheel spins around and by the way it's $120 for two brand new wheel bearings with the Hub and ABS sensor on eBay with 10 years warranty if you buying a used truck be ready for repairs and basically the way I see it it's how clean the truck looks that will tell you story how well the owner kept that particular vehicle
Thank you so much truck master for your service ,I served to 11b 10th Mountian and think you guys for making this vedio, wish that I knew this info a year ago,I have a 2013 Denali 2500 6.6 lml
Love Watching your videos I’ve been a Chevy man my whole life never had a Duramax I’ve always stuck with the gas jobs I got a 6.0 and love it .. maybe a diesel be in my future but it seems like a lot of keep ..
Dan Makin On my gas trucks in the past I would always change my oil every 3/4K miles. I let the Duramax go 5/6k miles (deleted) so it's about the same cost really. Everything else is the same on the air frame. It's not that much more to own a Diesel. Cheaper if you tow a lot. My uncle just converted and bought a Cummins to tow his 5th wheel, never seen a 70yr old man so damn happy, made me happy to listen to him tell me all about it hahaha
Thanks for all the info. On a side note, stop buying all our Canadian trucks. I’ve been looking for a lbz truck in Canada for four years now. Anything that is available is typically a high mileage rust bucket. I’ve finally found a rust free lower mileage truck, which i’m looking at tomorrow.
Chevy and GMC trucks don't powder coat their frames. They only put a was substance on them. They need to step it up like Ford and Ram by powder coating them. In 2020 they've stepped up big time by making the cab bigger and bed bigger
Use a good LED flashlight on the exhaust facing the exhaust itself during the daytime it's still kind of hard to tell but at night you can clearly see the white smoke coming out of it equals bad injector
@@lukewatson3524 ya but they get good mpg, and believe it or not they can TOW! they say towing heavy loads will take longevity off your truck. From my research, this diesel engine was a proven marine engine until Chevy got ahold and bastardized it.
@ 8min 30 sec when he mentions the tire baldness issue. I have noticed on my 07 colorado z71 suspension that the previous owner had played with those torsion bars that come on z71 trucks and he essentially had the tires running on the inside toe of the tire so no matter how many alignments I got done, none of them thought to even look at the torsion bars because not all trucks have them. By my 3rd set of tires, I finally saw a video of some guy adding a 2 inch lift to his z71 by playing with those torsion bars and he mentioned the tires will run bald on the inside edge.. Just thought I would mention that in case people didn't know why their z71 truck might be doing that to tires after alignments etc if its a used truck someone might have played with the torsion bars.
My truck has sat over night for 12 hours. Check this morning and my upper radiator hose wasn’t hard as a rock but wasn’t completely soft either. Best way I can say it is that I was able to squeeze the hose about 50% of the way before I could touch my fingers. Normal? Or just get ready for head gaskets?
5:29 oh but i do have a ridiculously expensive Snap On scanner, and an Autel Elite too. Good information all the way around. I dont like working on the modern diesels. Too much crap in the way..
Wonder what my 2005 Dually LLY LT would fetch with 35,000 miles. Bought it new in 05, started working in Iraq in 2007, now in A’stan. Hate letting a diesel sit like this but don’t want to deal with all of the new emissions stuff. Get to drive her again next month. Stoked. Always covered in the shop, can still get a whiff of new leather.
If it dumping to mu h fuel into the system it can also be someone turned the fuel up on it as was done to a duramax I owned . I t was done at the dealer

The VIN is the indication to use on where a truck was actually made. Starts with a "1, 4 or 5", U.S.A. 2 is Canada, and 3 is Mexico.
Also check the hours by pressing odometer button instead of the miles. A lot of these idle in the oil field all day 24/7.

Very helpful
Great video wish all used car dealers were honest about what they are selling you
Excellent video. I picked up my first Duramax an 06 LBZ with 127,000 miles last spring. I paid $21K for it.
Exterior-
Check the frame, especially where the spare tire goes. The bed rails and feel up behind the fender wells. If the trucks high enough try to poke your head up under there. The obvious cab/rockers. If it’s a white truck, check for paint flaking, GM did a horrible job. I believe there was a recall back in the day.
Yes, an LLY will overheat when pulling 15,000 lbs at 75 mph in July, but the pros outweigh the cons.
Great video guys. About to buy an LLY, this is exactly what I was looking for👍
I found this video informative even if don't own a diesel truck, I'm pretty sure I was the only gasser at your last truck meet....but I made up for that by being the only red GMC 2500 HD truck there. lol Thanks for sharing, peace out. Al
+NOLAW47 it was cool having you there
Great info on this. I am in the market for a 2006 duramax one ton dually. Thanks for doing this.
Keep’em coming and make a series TruckMaster. Not in the market, but I do have a 2015 LML with 150k and it’s nice to have an idea what to check on periodically going forward. Thank you sir for the content.
I prefer to use a $20 bill held flat and stiff over the oil fill tube to check for blowby.
Thanks.
Yea wouldn't want to lose the oil cap
Oh, look at mr moneybags over here! Any other man would just use a $1 bill
if that upper hose is compressed most of the time the fill cap to the rad tank needs scrub out with mild soapy water, and maybe a light soak before scrubbing .. thanks
+chris kriewall great point
The Duramax is a trademark I'd check before selling that stuff could cause problems down the road
I’m glad I have a f250 1988 7.3 and a 94 turbo 7.3 and lastly a 97 7.3.
Let’s see something about the old fords dodges as well. Good job.
drmachinewerke1 wow that’s an awesome story
Hi , have been looking to buy a duramax next years and watch your video start helping me understand way better how the engin work and what to look for when buying used .Will continu to watch cause I want to learn hoe to repair myself my futur duramax looking for 2006 to 2009 thankx body hi fallow you from Quebec 🤘🤘👌
If upper hose is collapsed..buy a new surge tank cap..or take that one and run hot water on side where the spring is inside
Going to look at a 2002 Silverado with 6.6L Duramax today. This is very helpful!
I am looking to buy a 2007 LBZ GMC 3500 Denali and the information that was shared on this video is very useful info for me
Makes me want to purchase a truck from this guy.
He's a good guy, I know his as a dealer in the business.
The poppens are stand up guys. If youre lookin for a Chevy or dodge you can find one easy.
What Is the name of this lot?
Thanks for the heads up! Wish I had seen this prior to buying my 04 Sierra duramax! I will add : Unless you have deep pockets stay away from Diesel trucks:-( their money pits for sure!
I've learned a lot from your channel. I'm a Ford guy and I've been looking at duramax a lot lately. I'm pretty split on either an LBZ or LMM
I'm so glad I don't do mechanical except light maintenance, on the older, very dependable Honda I drive and don't need a truck!
Picking up an LB7 in a week, very informative video thank you!
Shouldn't had bout the Lb7., they're designed flawed with the injectors, no matter how clean you keep your fuel
Finally, informative, simple tips. Thank you
when jacked up you can also use a bigger pry bar under the tire and try to lift up and down on the bar and it should not wiggle or knock if everything is good :)
Oh it was also completely stock until I got my hands on it ..lol
You get any Chevy Crew cab 1 ton duallys, with Duramax and allison tranny, with about 130-175,000 miles
@@sethh8365 you can go longer intervals with synthetic oil.
I love that black truck behind the truck you guys are talking about!! That’s an AWSOME video 👍🏼 the guy wit bought the hat looks so familiar 🤔 .
If a person isn't sure if it's LB7 or LLY..look at the VIN tag in the windshield..8th digit is a 1 it's LB7..if is 2..LLY
Looks like a bunch of good deals and a bunch of soon to be happy truck owners near you!
Use a good LED flashlight on the exhaust facing the exhaust itself during the daytime it's still kind of hard to tell but at night you can clearly see the white smoke coming out of it equals bad injector
This guys are great advisers. Thank you
Very informative. Thank you. Great video. You can’t trust anybody.
You should do a series for the LMLs! That would be awesome!👍🏼
I’m from flint. Live by bishop airport. I’m buying a 2006 2500 6.6 duramax tomorrow. Video helps me decide if going to put my money down.
How.do you.like your duramax?
Learned a lot about the duramax! Thank you!
+Heath Brockway no problem
I already knew a lot about them. They have no power and they’re overpriced
Luke Watson LMAO
I bought mine $600 with bad injectors.
But if your 4x4 check that front diff people often run those out of gear oil.
Thanks
Just found this; looking at a 2007 LBZ right now w/67k on the odometer
Very informative
Great helps, and like honesty of the dealer in perry.
5:29 oh but i do have a ridiculously expensive Snap On scanner, and an Autel Elite too.
Good information all the way around. I dont like working on the modern diesels. Too much crap in the way..
Little blue smoke on a COLD (below 45f) start is actually common. Nothing wrong with that
Taking notes here. I'm checking out an LMM tomorrow. Great video.
Thanks
Wonder what my 2005 Dually LLY LT would fetch with 35,000 miles. Bought it new in 05, started working in Iraq in 2007, now in A’stan. Hate letting a diesel sit like this but don’t want to deal with all of the new emissions stuff. Get to drive her again next month. Stoked. Always covered in the shop, can still get a whiff of new leather.
If it dumping to mu h fuel into the system it can also be someone turned the fuel up on it as was done to a duramax I owned . I t was done at the dealer
These years of Duramax’s are very reliable and last forever.
Did all the tests to my 6.6 I passed them all thanks 4 the video buddy
