There should be some pressure in the radiator after running the engine a bit. but like you said, there shouldn't be bubbles or instant high pressure after starting. Take along a pressure tester. connect it to a cold radiator (don't pressurize it) and run the engine and see how fast pressure builds on the gauge.

Make sure a diesel truck has matching batteries. If they've been replaced one at a time, use that as a negotiating piece. Bad batteries take out everything around them. Alternator/starter/batteries on a diesel get expensive
@@stuartgergen830 that doesn't make any sense. So you owned the truck, and then "someone" leased it, and THEN "someone" put "car batteries in it"??? Lol, what in the f@wk does that even mean?
You gave some good advice it’s very good for a novice. The worst thing for for these modern diesels is using them as grocery getters short hops stop and go not getting them up to running temperature shutting them down etc. that’s what screws up emissions systems and put a hurt on the engine. Diesels are meant to work and drive deleting them is the only way to go, except now the EPA is on to this and the companies making delete kits are being messed with.
This transcends diesels and applies to ANY vehicle, but basically gauge the overall shape of the rig. See if the interior has many stains, busted trim pieces, or tears in fabric. See if the exterior has many dents, dings, or chips in paint (obviously some dings and chips are inevitable, but A LOT of em means it probably gets romped on)
13:38 There is this one weird trick where you bring a OBD dongle with you and an app on your phone and you look at the pid for last DPF regen mileage and it will give you a HUGE clue whether the DPF is functioning properly which is a symptom of a ton of emissions or engine related issues. If it's sub 100 miles or you track a significant increase on your test drive, walk away. Also read ALL DTCs including archived ones. This will give you a clue of past issues and hidden electrical issues. It will also tell you if a "non-stock ecu calibration is detected". Basically if the truck is emissions intact and it's been tuned, walk away because you'll likely have emissions problems.

It’s interesting back in the day when someone drove a diesel it’s because actually worked with it today every kid has one .. In my opinion you get the best for your money when you buy them two years old or 1 year old with 20,000 miles.. you can get a 2019 for example with 40,000 or less miles for 48k . Or a 2015 with 140k . For 39$ they hold value it’s worth adding $100 to your monthly finance and maintain your truck the way it should be from the beginning Or at least closer to less Mile.. I purchased my 2017 F350 6.7 xlt dully with 18,000 miles . At the time it was about a year and a half old I payed 48k now 2021 I could probably get the same amount back I have 48,000 miles .. it’s worth leading the extra money upfront.. diesels for some reason hold amazing value when they’re 7 to 10 years old Best time to sell and if no mechanical problems Basically cost you 10 - 12 k to use a truck for eight years zero issues. Or ride it till the fucking wheels fall off... when you buy these old trucks there a money pit If a motor or something big goes they’re not worth anything put your money into a newer truck the money is there ... I had a 97 12 valve with 400,000 miles Long story short cost me 20 grand to operate the truck for four years I had it. That’s $500 a month you add another 200 a month and you’re in a brand new truck and the resell value is there ... when my motor blew on the 12 valve it was worth shit with 400k truck

Buying my first diesel tomorrow. Thank you for this. Lots of these videos but they never tell me if what I'm looking at is good or bad. Your video breaks it down great. You should do more like this
Mine is an 04 cummins 5.9 diesel , i made sure i ordered one before i got stuck with having to buy an emissions engine. I was a diesel mechanic and tech from 95 to 14, we were schooled on the first up and comming egr engines and warned by detroit diesel and cummins of the draw backs of the 04 and 10 systems comming up. That was in 2002 , they were telling us that the engines would run dirtier internally and their big issue was the engine oils to handle the increased heat and soot in the crankcase. The engines would loose 20% efficency on the 04 standard and 30 to 35 on the 2010 comming standard. They were correct in their projection , the 04 did get that reduction in fuel economy and the 10 did as well.
Only thing I disagree with is the radiator cap. The cooling system will build pressure fairly quickly and also you wouldn't want to remove the cap on a hot engine.
@bill2526 bill2526 Well thank you for you comment, but all you did was restate my factual account in different words.... you are correct, but that's basically what I said, but reworded. I really have been doing this for 28 years, a 50/50 mixture gets you up to about 230 degree boiling point (don't quote me, it varies) and the pressure allows additional higher temps before boiling, say 240 to 250 (guessing). But the average car NEVER is designed to run over 215 (highest I've ever seen personally). But that's still stupid hot because of what it does to the NO'2 emissions. But cool you chimed in. Peace bro.
So basically if trucks already had EGR delete no worries on EGR. Clifford info was good info I needed. I’ll b sure to get that cold start and check exhaust. Big fan love your videos. I’m looking at a 2011 2500 and I been doing a lot of research and question asking and this answered a lot. Thanks.

You also forgot your mention when starting the truck if the rpm has a fast spot during cranking you got low compression on a cylinder.
FishFind3000 my circle of friends call it a dead skip of death
What do you mean when the rpm “has a fast spot” during cranking? What am I looking/hearing for?
@@hooperboi5849 diesels typically crank like twice slower then gas motors. Thats due to way higher compression rate.
@@marcelo403polo2 so if it crank quicker low compression?
@@derek4real928 it could be. Also depends batteries condition.
Best video ever on diesels brother, thanks
You should make some merch defiantly would buy
Suggestions

PLEASE more of these types of videos!
Buddy awesome video! Thank you so much. I’m currently looking to buy a diesel truck and this is an awesome tool set to have in mind. 👍🏻
My name's Forbuck Gigglybern and i approve this assembly fortitude geographic post restored process. Good job keep up the good work Harkley. Send the paperwork over to my office Tuesday.
Could you please do a video like this on what you looked for when you purchased your corporate jet?
GREAT INFORMATION!!! I don't know everything about a Diesel, but I know more now. Good Job Westen! Yu actually got serious and did something really worth doing. Good For you. RS.
I'm a new subscriber and I'm really enjoying your vids! Keep up the good work 👍
Buying my first diesel tomorrow. Thank you for this. Lots of these videos but they never tell me if what I'm looking at is good or bad. Your video breaks it down great. You should do more like this
Hows the diesel
Thanks Man! Tomorrow imma double check and hopefully I buy my 4th! Excited to upload my video!
Every video that subscriber count jumps. Keep up the great work brother
You were a little goofy in the beginning but you sure do know your Diesel. Great job !
Only thing I disagree with is the radiator cap. The cooling system will build pressure fairly quickly and also you wouldn't want to remove the cap on a hot engine.
I concur, someone’s gonna get scalded!
I’ve even taken off rad caps after sitting for weeks and they had pressure.
I've been a mechanic for 28 years, if the radiator doesn't build "some" pressure that the cooling system has a leak. You guys are correct.
My thoughts also
@bill2526 bill2526 Well thank you for you comment, but all you did was restate my factual account in different words.... you are correct, but that's basically what I said, but reworded. Peace bro.
Bro best Chanel I've visited so far and I'm very picky
Well done Westen!! You are a good teacher. Love the beginnings with the dog, love that part of your videos. Love ya lots. Keep up the good work.
Thanks.
Love the videos. Please keep making videos. the more content the better.
Just the info I needed as I go to check out my 1st Cummins
Cooling systens by design build pressure. So having pressure in the cooling system isnt exactly a bad thing.
DyingCrew it’s when it’s excessive pressure. I was impressed he was able to squeeze the hose after it was running. My D-max pos always has a hard upper rad hose cause of bad Head gaskets
@@wilsonb6508 yeah excessive pressure is never good. But it a hose is hard its not always a bad thing.
It builds pressure when it's hot. It shouldn't build pressure when it's cold.
why was there no splash/pressure release when he removed the cap? was the truck not hot enough yet to build pressure?
my red ram was named Clifford too. Man I miss that truck
Great video!
I could’ve used this information about ten days ago. 2008 Laramie with 218,000 miles. For $15k. Couldn’t figure out why the price was so low. Anyway, Great information! Great video!
👍🏻
It is impressive how much you know about this stuff. 🙌
Winter is coming! GOT and you ROCK my friend! Lol....
Good info sir.
Fummins is cummin....keep up the great vids...
That's a good point about watching the RPMs come back down, when I got my Cummins I didn't know about it it home for a while before it came down real slow and I needed injectors
This is Awesome ! Lots of great info there ! ..... Fummins is Cummin ! LoL
2nd. time I've watched this...Why ?...The easy way you explain the steps in looking for that diesel truck that is ready to go. I don't need diesel, and run a Ram 5.7 which never misses a beat...But, when it does, I'll fix it...it's an engine after all..Thanks Westen, I really enjoy the no BS way you tell it like it is.
Thanks for this. I'm planning on hopefully buying a diesel truck soon.
I think Saturday story time should be a thing for your channel Westen. Tall tales to spit at the stove to so to speak. Fractured fairytales from Oklahoma! Be a sweet bit entertainment wise [thinking of the Porsche dealer stories and all]. Could be any story you want to make up and run off. It'd be a solid thing for sure.
Thanks for filming ~ keepem coming
BEST DYI vids on the tube. Hell yeah keep'em "Cummin" buds!!!
To foster international relations, as a Canadian I feel you should send me a hat for the Canadian joke 😉
