    01 LB7 owner here, wanted to add 2 things:
    1.) You can get a kit for a 6-speed tranmission, if the stock 5-speed bothers you.
    2.) Not all LB7s are created equal. California LB7s(YF5 code) are different than the Federal(FE9) LB7s in that Federal has no CAT/EGR.
    I always recommend a lift pump for LB7s, keep those injectors clean with clean diesel!

      The 6 speed is only for someone that really uses it for long drive but doesn’t pull a trailer because you really won’t use 6th and yeah the Cali trucks have egr and the heads do not flow as well as federal trucks

Has a K&N cold air breather and a tow tuner. Drives and handles like a new truck very tight. Even the windows and doors operate as like new. Very well pleased with it.

    2004 lb7 owner, when replacing injectors if you haven’t already upgrade your banjo bolts on the return lines, the stock ones are not deep enough to get an Allen wrench in without stripping them out so therefore you can’t get them torqued to the right spec and that will also cause fuel to leak into your crank case as well, the injectors were replaced and still got fuel leaking in the crank case and a buddy told me about the banjo bolt issue and that fixed the issue and like someone else said, a lift pump is a must weather you are at stock hp or wanting to create more hp, that will also help the longevity of your cp3 and injectors other than that I absolutely love the truck

    In 2012 while working on a pipeline project in Kentucky I had the pleasure to meet Wade and Adam at Thoroughbred Diesel. I managed to convince them to install new stock Bosh matched injectors an air dog fuel preparator and and an NP271 heavy duty transfer case with custom made drive shafts. The next year I installed Eaton eLockers Front (electric) and rear differential lockers. A PPE tuner set at 90 hp and PPE oil spinner filter round out my 02 Extended Cab GMC Duramax with Allison AT. Like Wade, I really have enjoyed this truck, it exclusivley pulls my 5th wheel with Jeep behind to jobs around the country. It still brings a smile everytime I drive it....trouble free for all these years and miles. It was a fantastic experience workingvm with Wade,, Adam both knowledgeable folks. I do no regret for one second the money I invested into this truck at Thoroughbred Diesel.

    Just picked up a 2004 duramax dually. Was a 2 owner truck. Originally from Vermont, then upstate new york and now its in pa. All very salty states. And this thing has zero body rust. I had to replace the whole steering system and body mounts, but other than that, just some surface rust on the frame I will repaint. No broken plastic, no broken parts anywhere and no ripped seats. The LT model . even all the buttons have all white writing that isnt rubbed off from continuous touching. I found a gem. And didn't pay big jeweler price for it. By far my favorite vehicle of all-time. Ive had 39 vehicles in my life so ive had many others to compare against. Dont be afraid of any LB7 shortcomings.

    Original owner of 2003 HD 2500 Crew with 6.6 duramax. Current mileage at 261,000 and still a stock truck. Have had to address instrument cluster twice, transfer case, lb7 injectors twice plus a few electrical gremlins. With that I still enjoy driving and using this vehicle for towing. Will keep repairing over purchasing a replacement due to new vehicle cost. Got lucky and have a rust free unit but located in central Missouri. You can trust the review by thoroughbred diesel. I've loved the GMT800 platform since they came out, and I've owned 2 of them, but I've never had a Dmax. Every time i ever considered buying one in the past though, the injector issues scared me away from the LB7 specifically. After talking to some experienced techs though, the overall simplicity has drawn me to them despite its downfalls. So I'm picking up an '04 dually tomorrow for a pretty good deal since it has a crank-but-no-start condition. It just shut off while driving, and they can't get it to start. We'll see what I find when I pick it up tomorrow and diagnose it.

      @Diddley-js6lf 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Myles Swann that’s what I say all the time, the HO 5.9 is the very same motor that they use for most Schools Bus’s because of the durability, power, and no maintenance for the most part. I have to say I loved it when all you needed was a 12 volt wire and Some fuel and you were rolling, unlike today when you need five techs to fix one stupid problem. Kudos to Dodge in the Motor department but their 98 truck was the very worst truck I have ever owned, but it was a gas motor that’s when I looked at all three truck manufacturers drove all three and at the time Dodge didn’t offer a very big crew and with my children I had to go with GM at that point and the Duramax has been great but my heart if I am honest has always been with the Cummings motor and the kill proof Shakers. Loll

Dropped tank and replaced the $300 flex lines from the tank to hard lines and fuel cooler. Snap nut on tank broke. Bought new and ripped old clip off frame. Easy in terms of understandability but doing it is awful with rust and the Houdini front section. Had to take off bracket of new lines and the rubber steering shaft diaphragm to get it up in the engine. Also took off oil filter.

    I have been thinking of making a offer on one thats been sitting, 2002 1 ton dually, 170k km, been sitting for 3 maybe 4 years, needs 4 new tires, and the frame is solid but needs cleaned up, and just a little bit of work and tlc, otherwise seems in very good shape, has had injectors already done too, any suggestions? I don’t really have a purpose for one of these but it would be a dream truck i live in the salt belt i wouldnt plan to drive it in the salt, and just overall preserve and enjoy it,

      I think you covered a lot of the things that you look for there. If the price is right, and you know what to look for with these trucks, you will be just fine! Put fresh fuel in it before you try to start it.

    Looking at buying an 04, currently has a white smoke issue. So I should let it warm up, then come back a few hours later and check the radiator hose to check for pressure? The truck is in really good condition overall condition.

    • @thoroughbreddiesel
      @thoroughbreddiesel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      White smoke at idle is usually going to be an injector condition, which is common in Lb7 trucks. Unrelated but yes, drive truck and get to operating temp and check upper radiator hose after it has been shut off for an hour or so. If you have pressure on radiator hose after that time, beware of head gasket or injector cup.

    Hey I just bought one of these its a 2004 and I was just wondering when I've been driving amd then slow down and get down to idle like 5 mph ish or at a red light it starts to smoke a little bit of whiteish blue smoke. Anyone know what it would be?

    • @thoroughbreddiesel
      @thoroughbreddiesel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Start with checking our balance rates, +/- 4 is the spec. If all in balance, then you probably are going to have to use a block off tool to find the injector culprit.

    I have been watching your videos for about a year now...Good job..I see that you have a 2001 LB7. Have you ever had the P0093 code pop up while driving/towing under load? Thanks.

    • @thoroughbreddiesel
      @thoroughbreddiesel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you! P0093 could come from a couple of different areas possibly developing on your truck, high side fuel system related. I suggest driving with some sort of ability to monitor actual vs commanded fuel rail pressure while towing just to see how low it gets. Switching over to a external lift pump, Airdog, FASS, etc. would be a good upgrade to start with. After that, suspect injectors, weak cp3 or cascade valve.
