    Thank you so much for this video! As a first time mom with a preemie that especially needed tummy time to strengthen her back I felt super overwhelmed. This video gave me a lot of guidance for where to start!

    What a lovely, helpful video! I'm so tired of "baby must-haves!" from girls in their 20s with fake eyelashes and poor grammar. I learned a lot from this video, and I love to learn -- especially regarding how to facilitate my baby's development. Reminding viewers not to wait for the "perfect" time was stellar advice that hit close to home. Thank you for a great video 😊

      Hello Kimberly. I agree about how wonderful that elephant is. I recently tried to but a new one but could not find one! It was by Fisher-Price. The dalmation in the link below looks similar however I"m not sure it will roll independently (or will need you to push it). If you find the one in the video, please pass on where you found it! I'd love to get another one! Please note, we do not receive any funding from amazon, etc to promote their toys. www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Disney-Amazing-Animals-Rolling/dp/B00ADEWN8K/ref=sr_1_56?keywords=rolling&qid=1552391206&s=toys-and-games&sr=1-56

    How old is this baby? My son is 3 1/2 months old and I do this on every alternate days. Is this enough? How much tummy time should I give to my baby on daily basis and when exactly?

  • @melissalykins8895
    @melissalykins8895 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I do tummy time with my daughter, and she usually does great. I use the boppy pillow at times, and also do it on my belly, while I’m reclined and that allows her to raise her head up. What I do worry about, is how she spits up. My baby girl sometimes has trouble with acid reflux, so after feedings I’m always making sure that I hold her upright for around 30 minutes. During the day, this makes tummy time difficult to fit in - mainly because I fear it will cause her spit ups to worsen. If they were small spit ups, I wouldn’t worry. But there’s been times she loses her breath. And I’m afraid that position will make it worse. Are there any tips to help prevent reflux in babies with tummy time? Is it best to do tummy time before feedings, or so long after she feeds?

    • @miradyussembayeva1110
      @miradyussembayeva1110 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Melissa, it's OK, if she spits a lot, as a video says. My baby girl also spits up a lot, mostly during the day. You shouldn't worry whether the tummy time will worsen it. You should do the tummy time before feeding. I read that it's best to do that 20 minutes before feeding and 30 minutes ( i think it's minimum) after feeding. Good luck!

      Sounds like my baby, he has GERD. But his favorite position to sleep is on my chest and I count it as tummy time. After 30 mins of more upright sitting I lay down with him on my chest

    My little brother loved to watch the dogs and eventually he started worming after them soon after eventually he started crawling after them especially when they where sleeping. Poor Rufus old hound wasn’t able to sleep for years.

    • @susanklemm5505
      @susanklemm5505  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Chris. What a sweet story. The love you have for your brother and your old hound dog shines through! Your story also beautifully illustrates the miracle of development. Your brother saw something that he was curious about (using his visual system and his muscles to lift his head to see). The dog's smell and sounds and eye contact and his shiny fur or collar, basically everything about Rufus, probably motivated your brother. Part of what I like about the story is the "payoff" for your brother. Rufus wasn't cheering him on as parents often do. When we cheer and clap sometimes it is just pure joy and sharing. Sometimes though it is used as a motivator. When over used, it creates a baby that does things to get applause and approval and the baby misses out on the pure joy of movement. The baby also misses out on starting to build his "persistence" muscle and the development of curiosity as a driver of our actions. Your brother went from an itty, bitty baby lifting his head off the ground to see Rufus to eventually squirming and then crawling to get to him, creating complex motor plans and satisfying his curiosity! It's a wonderful miracle. As you say, perhaps not so wonderful for Rufus! Thank you so much for sharing!

    it's amazing that all these babies survived for thousands of years without these classes to show them how to lay on their stomachs!

    • @susanklemm5505
      @susanklemm5505  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Ce Ce. I hear you! There are several underlying reasons why what used to be common knowledge and passed down from generation to generation has gone by the wayside and classes and information are needed. A major reason is the advertising, pressure, and marketing aimed at new parents to purchase and heavily use baby containers such as swings, bouncy seats, and other equipment which interrupts typical development and sets the scene for head shape issues. The issue is so widespread that there is now a condition termed "Container Baby Syndrome". There are other reasons, but this is a major one. We have seen this issue steadily increase over the last 15 years and everyday in our clinic we have parents that say "I wish I had known". Videos such as this are an effort to equip those parents who are interested and desire to know. I hope that helps explain why there is a need.

    • @susanklemm5505
      @susanklemm5505  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello. I assume you meant that in a kidding manner. In a serious vein though, parents are not getting information that previously they may have gotten from grandparents, neighbors, and pediatricians. We hope that when watching this video, a new parent might almost feel as if they've just had a visit from someone who really knows babies and that the parent feels equipped to help their baby develop well and have a normal headshape (for all the medical reasons reasons why this matters). Every single day in our occupational and physical therapy clinic we work with parents who went to many prenatal classes and read many books but were not exposed to this information. Instead they were marketed to and own and heavily use devices such as swings and Snoos and Merlins that we strongly feel disturb normal development (in babies who are vulnearble). We want to help fill the educational gap for parents!

    I don’t know if you still respond but my daughter is 7 weeks rightnow and I barely get time for tummy time because of her sleeping and eating. She’s REALLY big and eats 5 oz and then either sleeps or wants to be entertained but she has bad spit up and I don’t want her spitting up on her stomach. Whenever I do find time though, she immediately starts screaming her head off. She seems to hate tummy time no matter if I use pillows or put her on my chest. Is there any way to calm them? I don’t want to torture her.

    • @susanklemm5505
      @susanklemm5505  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Angeriiwater and congratulations on your baby! I"m glad she is a good eater. I agree about not torturing her! I'm so glad you are trying hard to do tummy time! It is really good for her development. Sometimes sidelying can be a step towards getting to sidelying. Also, when she first wakes up, don't take her out of her crib right away but instead gently and slowly roll her to her side. After a little time there, gently and slowly roll her to her tummy. Vary how you talk to her. If you are very exagerrated and tend to talk alot and give her lots of verbal encouragement, try being very quiet and let her experience her body moving without alot of verbal encouragement around her. I don't know you or your style or your daughter, so you will need to experiment. When you say she wants to be entertained . . . I'm not sure what you provide her during this time. If you fill me in, I"m happy to give my thoughts on ways to make this time engaging for her. That time after a baby first wakes up can be golden in terms of her learning and development (so much development happens during these early months). Remember that you are in charge, so if she is wanting to be entertained by sitting in her swing and looking at a video and you feel this is not good for her (it isn't), then you have the option of changing that routines. (Container Baby Syndrome). Save something she really loves looking at for when she is on her tummy. A mirror or your face is usually really desirable! I hope something in here helps! Keep chipping away at making tummy time enjoyable for her, you are on the right track! A few minutes throughout the day adds up.

    Mine is 11.5 months old, doesn't crawl on her own. Can sit well since 6 months. But never went on tummy. Rarely she slept on my papa's tummy. Now she doesn't cry if put on tummyy but immediately gets straight, but cires if forced or persuaded to stay on tummy. How do I get her to crawl, move? She stands n walks with my support.

    • @susanklemm5505
      @susanklemm5505  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Vidhya. Thank you for watching the video. I am assuming she also doesn't roll alot either. To help your baby to start moving more and crawling, help her go from sitting to side sitting. Put a toy she likes to the side that to get it she has to stretch and move and then you can help her shift her arms and legs around so she is in side sitting. She needs to get comfortable with putting weight on her arms. I also recommend trying to find an occupational or physical therapist to work with her and teach you ways to help her at home. With a therapist helping, I'll bet she'd start to move more within a few weeks! You are a good mrther to care and to be reaching out and asking these questions to help her!

      Hello Sabrina. Make tummy time part of your baby's routines, something like after every diaper change roll your baby onto her or his tummy. Also, incorporate it into burping by lying on your lap. As you walk around your house or apt, carry your baby on his or her tummy. Basically anytime your baby is awake try and incorporate it into what you are doing. I hope this helps! Congratulations on your baby!

However, if you mean something like a boppy pillow that you place under your baby's chest while she or he is doing tummy time and you are right there watching your baby, that is fine. Try tummy time in various positions - on a boppy pillow; in your arms; flat on the floor; in your lap; etc. Again, congratulations!

    • @Carolinakinderdevelopment
      @Carolinakinderdevelopment 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Jana. There are advantages to either before or after feeding, try it both ways and see what works best for your baby. On a full stomach there may be a little more spit up but it might be worth it because your baby will be more content. Then again, some babies just want to go straight to sleep after feeding and so that would not be a good time (baby needs to be awake and supervised during tummy time). Hope this helps!

      Hello Sue, I'm late in responding but you bring up an important part of development. It is quite true that there is no rush to push a baby to do anything. There is however a rush to provide a baby with the just right challenge. There is a big difference between a parent propping an infant in a walker to try to make them walk sooner and a parent who wants to play with their infant in a developmentally supportive manner. A tremendous amount of brain growth and connections still happening, even in the first few weeks after birth. A baby who spends some awake time on her tummy and then rolls around 3-4 months then crawls around 5-8 months will be exploring her environment. That is crucial for development. Thank you for bringing this up. Susan
