  • When you have a baby who hates tummy time or you're not sure how to do tummy time with a newborn, you might start to wonder if tummy time is even needed. This thought isn't that extreme, since our grandparents and parents never did tummy time with their babies and they all turned out completely fine.
    But this isn't correct! Our parents and grandparents did do tummy time with their babies and there are negative consequences of not doing tummy time with a baby.
    In this video I will finally put this tummy time myth to rest! As well as demonstrate fun newborn tummy time positions your can try with your little one to make tummy time more enjoyable for you both.

    My son never liked tummy time, no matter how much I tried to get him even a few mins in. I used to be so stressed watching these videos where mum's emphasized how important it was. I thought my son will be missing out on it and suffer. However as it turned out, he had all his milestones achieved on time, some even before like crawling and walking. Also for protecting from getting a flat head, I had him lie on that pillow which has a divet at the back. There's a lot of different things to be tried out there.

      Same with my daughter. She hated it and was already a high needs baby. She was mildly behind on some milestones, but hit them all within reasonable timeframe. She’s now four, and as it turns out, completely healthy, happy, and fine.

    Started doing tummy time as soon as I found out, I believe he was around 2 mos. He hated it at firs but began liking it so much he didn’t want to go to his back anymore at 5 mos 😂. He’s almost 7 mos now and started crawling on his knees nicely 🥰. My son was born with Macrocephaly and has remained above the 97th percentile. Nearing 5 months he has head lag and cannot support his own head or sit up.
    So far in the last month or so he has had dads accelerated tummy time and he has great improvement. Such a big head is hard to hold up.
    His doctors only view him for 3 minutes and give us dread, I explained that perhaps it's because we're not doing enough tummy time or doing it properly. The doctors all say that's not the case but I say otherwise as I am with my son daily.
    There are no videos, no books on how to help a baby with a large head do tummy time. So far it's patience and consistency on my part

    Thanks for this! Our 7 month old is obsessed with tummy time and spends most of her day happily shrieking and giggling as she rolls around and plays with things on her tummy. She’s pretty close to full on crawling and if you just feel her legs and arms, they may look chubby but the muscles are tight and she is so strong! I’ve seen her do some really incredible strength things I was surprised she could do. Her arms especially are stronger than her legs, so she’s starting scooting backwards :) She’s our first and it’s super exciting to watch her reach milestones! I think around 4 months, she started only wanting to sleep on her tummy, in the cute little butt up position, with her arms tucked under her. Cheers and take care!

    Thai is very informative. I do have a suggestion though: some babies really hate tummy time. Mine did, I barely managed to do 1 minute once in a while. He rolled over late, yes, at 5 months from back to front (that is when he started liking tummy time) and 6 months the other way around. Yet he was sitting at 6 months, crawling at 8, standing at 9 and walking independently at 11. Was he the earliest in walking, no, but he did catch up pretty well. And even if he would have walked at 12-14 months, what is the hurry? Please don't scare parents that for one reason or another cannot do much tummy time.

      *Thank you* for saying this because I've been lax with tummy time for my baby since she was born and have been worrying. She's 3 months now and it's hard for me to get around to doing tummy time as often as I should... She can go for 5 minutes when she's super comfortable and in a good mood, but I catch that time about once a day, and even then she doesn't always keep her head up the entire time. But it's good to know I'm not damaging her by not getting her the recommended amount of time per day.

      My little boy hated tummy time so much that on the first attempt at 21 days old he rolled over. He was absolutely hysterical. Same thing happened the next day and the day after. It felt like I'm torturing him so I gave up on tummy time. He did a lot of "different way" tummy time though: he used to fall asleep on my tummy all the time and we also used to go swimming a lot. He is 12 months old now and have no issues with flat head or reaching his milestones.

    • @balusurisetti
      @balusurisetti 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sjtench89 for tummy time, adult supervision should be there. If your kid feels uncomfortable, change to back and try after sometime.
      Sometimes they will sleep on tummy. As Emma says do not leave like that until your baby knows how to roll back on her own.
      Regarding bumper, explain to your mother in law about SIDS. Tell her that doctors advised not to use pillows, bumpers, soft toys next to her while sleeping.

    I have to admit, I stopped letting my baby sleep on her back 2 weeks after she was born. Swaddling didn’t work either so I just let her sleep on her stomach but I watched her very carefully. When I saw her lift her head up on her own while sleeping I stopped watching her like a hawk and let her sleep on her stomach. I hope nobody judges me but my baby slept longer on her stomach than her back. Every hour she was waking up from sleeping on her back and she did 4 hour stretches when I let her sleep on her tummy.

    I started tummy time since my son was born. He really hated it at first and would cry every time for the first 2 weeks but we’d do 5 minutes every 2-3 hours every single day then gradually started adding more time the more the got used to it. He started rolling over back to belly/belly to back when he was 2 months, fully crawled at 5 months, and then walked/ran at 9 months. I’m super proud of how many milestones he’s hit early, especially since he was a few weeks premature.

    My mom definitely never did traditional tummy time or laid us on our belly to sleep (we both were born in the 80's). She always thought sleeping this way or laying this way was extremely uncomfortable. My mom used a Swiss ball to help with tummy time. She was a PT and had one at her facility. She would bring it home in the evening and back in the morning. We hit our milestones early. I did the same with my daughter and she hit her milestones on the earlier side. My point is there's hope for babies that hate tummy time.

    I give my 8 month old as much tummy time as possible, she's very strong, but completely unmotivated with movement, she can roll over both ways, I witnessed her do it once. But 99% of the time she just lies there and sucks her fingers, ignoring toys etc. All her peers are rolling and pivoting, even crawling. She doesn't even want to move, not even to push up and look around. But she can already feed herself with a spoon, and clap, and wave, etc. Perhaps she's just doing things her own way.

    My lil one does quite a bit of tummy time and spends time upright on us. I also know she sleeps with head in both directions (but occasionally favours a particular side). She’s 4 months old with great head and neck control (Health nurse was quite impressed), yet out of my 3 kids, she’s the one that does have a bit of a flat spot on her head. Even my first baby who wore a hip brace from 2 weeks old and couldn’t do much tummy time in first few months because of the brace, didn’t really have any flats spots by 4 months.. Starting to wonder if we will need to get her flat spot checked out..

    I never did tummy time with my daughter and she could basically push herself up around 1 month. I started doing it after that; I'd flip her over after a diaper change for a few minutes. My son definitely doesn't have the neck/back muscles she did... I wonder if her being breech had anything to do with it? But anyway, I keep forgetting about tummy time, so I'd best get on that!

      Hi @Zinal Gandhi as your little one gets stronger he will start lifting it straight up. The head turning to the side is pretty normal at this age. You just want to check if your little ones head is turning to the same side all the time. If it is the same side and his head also falls to this side when lying on his back then I would recommend you go to the doctor to make sure your little ones neck muscles are not tight and preventing him from turning his head.

    • @EmmaHubbard
      @EmmaHubbard  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi @Pri USA generally I would aim for 1 - 2 minutes of tummy time when they are a newborn but this could be tummy time when lying on your chest, in your arms or on a boppy pillow. It is recommended you continue with tummy time really until they are crawling or walk. It's important to continue to give little ones tummy time even once they have learnt to sit up, because this will help strengthen the muscles required to crawl and walk.
      Hope that helps!

      Some bubs aren’t a huge fan of tummy time. It’s great he is able to sit propping on his arms. Just continue to provide short bursts of play on his tummy and help him go from his tummy into sitting. We can fall into the habit of stopping tummy time once they learn to sit but it’s important to continue to give them floor time. Rolling is a skill bubs can learn at 7months so still plenty of time to learn this skill.

      Hi @K GM so glad you like the channel.
      It's so hard when they don't like tummy time. I don't know if you have tried it but you could do tummy time with your little one just before or after a nappy change and just make it quick and then roll him back over. I sometimes find that when I do this and sing a song (really quickly) then roll them back over it makes it more tolerable for the bub. Then as they get use to doing it for the one song I start to drag out the song a bit or add another verse. But do it very gradually.

      Once they learn to sit they do prefer to be in this position because it is easier to use their hands to play and see the world. You could try to using a special toy for only tummy time (maybe one that lights up and sings) or just every time you go to put her on the ground to sit, place her on her tummy for a short time and then help her transition from her tummy into sitting. Is Tummy Time safe for premature babies?

    • @EmmaHubbard
      @EmmaHubbard  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi @Sylvia Sein I would recommend you follow the advice of your medical team for your little one.
      When I work with premature babies we do talk about doing tummy time once the little one is discharged home and there are no other medical complications. It's important to remember the goal/expectations for tummy time is based on their corrected aged not birth age.

  • @priusa8113

    We didn’t do much tummy time because my daughter hated it and so did we… certainly regret it now:( Could this be the reason why she is 16 months and not walking yet?! On a different topic, is it ok when toddlers (12 months and up) naturally turn to sleep on their bellies? Until when is the risk of SIDS?! Thanks Emma!!

    • @lilgv4584
      @lilgv4584 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very probably is the reason she is not walking and yes is fine to let them sleep on their back when they turn themselves. I think the risk of SIDS is until 12 months but even if they turn to their tummies before 12 months is ok to let them sleep like that.

    • @EmmaHubbard
      @EmmaHubbard  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi @Pri USA under 12 months the recommendation is you place them in their bed lying on their back for sleep and if they roll over independently onto their tummy then there is no need to roll them onto their back, as long as they are sleeping in a safe sleeping environment (so no pillows, soft toys, cot bumpers, loose blankets, on a separate sleeping surface with a firm mattress). So it's fine if your little one is over 12 months and choosing to sleep on their belly.
      All kids are very different and achieve milestones at different times. Generally children start walking from 12 months of age up to 15 months, but kids can start walking later. What is important is that your little one's standing and cruising skills are progressing and she is getting closer to walking. I have a video on the steps to walking which you might find helpful: th-cam.com/video/zksW3RlFAIo/w-d-xo.html If you are concerned then I would recommend you take your little one to a paediatric physiotherapist.
      Hope that helps!
