  • After having 6 babies 8 years, I have basically become a baby sleep expert, ha! Here are all my best tips and tricks for getting your baby to sleep through the night WITHOUT crying it out!
Try these simple tricks and your baby will be sleeping better in no time. Some of my favorite baby sleep items are linked below!
Note: I will say, I do believe in more aggressive sleep training methods if your baby or toddler needs the help, and Baby Wise (amzn.to/2GFWeIz) is the book I used to do more full-blown sleep training when nothing else works. So if you need help beyond this, check that out!

I didn't do a dang thing the first week after my baby was born so I did sleep when he slept and it was AMAZING! 🎉🎉🎉 Of course it won't work if you and baby literally the only ones home. But I was very lucky that my hubby got paternity leave so he could bring me food or whatever I needed that first week 💜

As a postpartum doula, I think these are great tips! The only thing that concerns me is being strict about feeding every 3 hours while establishing milk supply. It is very normal for babies to cluster feed at times. At the same time, I agree it's important to try to get full feeds in instead of grazing all day long, so learn your baby's cues so you can tell if they're actually hungry or not. And sometimes, babies just want to nurse for comfort and that's ok too.
As a mother of 4 (soon to be 5), including one set of twins, this is just not my parenting style. I exclusively breastfeed, nurse to sleep during the day and night, and bedshare until baby(ies) is about 6 months old. At that point, we start with naps in the crib and work up to full nights in the crib. My oldest STTN at 11.5 months, my twins about 9 months, my youngest about 7 or 8 months. We have not really had any trouble or felt overly sleep deprived doing things this way. Our babies all figured out pretty quickly that night time is for sleeping and day time is for being awake. I would always change diapers right before nursing, instead of in the middle of the feed, during the night. If I could tell they didn't eat enough, I would try to wake them up with a cold wipe, undressing, etc. We would always keep the lights off during night feeds as well. And I never really swaddled, as it didn't seem to help with my own kids. It is definitely worth a try though and I have done it with all of my doula babies! My own babies must be weird. 😆
There is no one-size-fits-all solution. Every baby and family is unique. Like I said, these are great tips! But if you try them and your baby still isn't a good sleeper, it doesn't mean you're doing something wrong. And on the flip side, this isn't the *only* way to get your baby to sleep well.
    Thanks for the video, Jordan!

I love seeing someone talking about sleep without CIO 😍. A routine is definitely a must but a lot of these tips wouldn’t work for breastfed babies. Feeding to sleep is a biological norm and feeding on demand is completely necessary for a boobie baby x

  • @4themotherload
    @4themotherload 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Loved what you said about the noise during the day (even through the evening), we did the same thing with our babies; during the day we didn't stop "life" from happening. I would keep the music going in the background during the day nothing crazy but a "dull roar", the baby would nap and not be startled by doorbells or other noises. I did a lot of your tips and people hated me because I had babies at 4 months sleeping through the night, not every night is perfect but when you can get 4 nights in a 7 day week really good your not sleep deprived and it just gets better as baby gets bigger!
All the best to your family!

Mama if 5 boys here. All tips are true! My now 11 month old got into a routine of falling asleep while nursing. He still 90% nursing for his diet (even though we try to feed him more). Habit started at 8 months when I took him in a 14 hour flight and stayed in that time zone for one week. Had to do what I could to survive that week which involved sleeping with him I my bed and bouncing him to sleep in the day. How do I get back to putting him down awake?! He was doing so great before. I could put him down happy and smiling and walk away. Alseep a few minutes later. It really is all about routine and timing it right.

I guess all of mines were just very good sleepers. Never had to put much effort to put them to sleep unless they weren't feeling well or they had an itch.. Plus one thing to note, don't change your daily routine because of the baby or don't change it too much, that creates some a lot of problems esp when it's time for us to come off maternity leave or waking them up and prepping them for school.

When I had my first baby, I started a nightly routine: food, play, bath, baby massage w/ lavender lotion while talking or singing to him quietly. His body language would indicate he was ready for bed. When he was tiny-tiny I did wrap him up before bed, and he'd sleep sooooo long. When I finally gave in and let him spend a night at Grammy's, she called me, two hours after what should have been his bed time, with him crying and fussing and she was so upset. I had packed the baby lotion, and had discussed in passing our night time routine in the past, but hadn't spelled everything out for her when I left him. I told her if she wanted to get any rest at all, she was going to have to redo bath time, and then walked her through the order I did his baby massage. He didn't stop fussing until he smelled the lotion, and his eyes didn't get heavy until she was finished w/ the massage. :) With my 2nd, I did the same routine for a while, but he eventually stopped responding to it. He wanted to do whatever his brother was doing, at the moment. And he slept so well, too. I think because play time was a little more active with big brother around. Both of my sons were pretty easy, now that I think about it. You just had to know their routines, or it would get difficult. I wrote all this, to express how much I absolutely agree with the idea of routines, based on my own personal experience. Congrats on your new edition!!!

I feel like I feed the baby constantly. He seems to be a slow/lazy feeder. One night, I nursed him over 2 hours. So now, my solution is I always give him a bottle at night instead of nursing him. This helped a lot. He goes back down way more quickly this way and I’m not exhausted.
My question is you said to make sure to give him a full feeding before he goes down... is this the feeding before bedtime? Or the middle of the night feeding? I don’t want to give him a bottle twice since he’s a newborn and I don’t want him to confuse or become disinterested in breastfeeding

Just in case anyone watching this doesn't know about the car seat sleeping. It's okay for baby to sleep in the car seat in the car because the base keeps the correct angle for baby's airway to be clear. DO NOT let baby sleep in a car seat that is not attached to the base it can cause asphyxiation!

Thank you for such a positive video! How long do you recommend using a white noise machine with your babies? Up to what age? Do you keep it on the whole time they are sleeping? My son is now 13 weeks old, sometimes sleeps great, this last week ~~not so much!

In order to completely empty your breasts you must start feeding on the last breast offered. Use a marker clip to help you remember. Most babies will fill a diaper once sucking begins. So there is no point in changing before hand. I usually changed before offering the second breast. It wakes them up, they feed better on the second breast and will then sleep better. Being full also leaves no room for gas.

Do what works for you and your baby. Noise machines weren’t around when I was a baby and I clearly slept, but if it helps your baby use it. We are all better parents when we sleep as well.
