  • As a portrait photographer, it's not unusual to need to remove redness (such as acne, eczema or other rashes) from the skin. There are plenty of techniques - mostly slow and painstaking - but this method is simple, fast and reliable: it requires nothing more than adding a hue/saturation layer and doing some careful adjustments!
If you've enjoyed this video, please head over to masteringportraitphotography.com. If you'd like to download the image I used to try for yourself, it can also be found on our website at masteringportraitphotography....
PS. It has not gone unnoticed that my own skin in the video could do with a little of this technique, haha.
    Enjoy!
Introduction: Have you ever wanted a really simple and reliable method for removing redness from your subject's skin? In this video, I'm going to show you exactly that. It's quick, it's easy, and it's repeatable. 0:00
Identifying the Problem: In this image, you can see that the subject has redness in her skin, particularly across the nose and chin. 0:32
Creating a Hue/Saturation Layer: To fix that, we will create a Hue/Saturation layer and adjust it so that we only affect the reds. 0:41
Selecting the Reds: Here, we're going to select the eyedropper tool to select the red areas more accurately, and then we'll drag the hue slider to the left to identify which bits of the image we will affect. 0:54
Isolating the Reds: We will isolate the reds further by dragging the endpoints on this little slider, narrowing down the types of red that will be affected. 0:79
Adjusting the Hue: We'll move the hue slider back, shifting those reds towards the more yellows and oranges. We'll zoom in and just double-check it. 1:02
Fine-Tuning: There are a few bits here that we want to include, so we're just going to click on those little bits of red. We'll also ensure not to affect the lips and the corners of the eyes. 1:30
Final Result: If we turn this off, you can see what it was before. Turn it back on, and you can see we've moved the redness out of the skin. It's quick, it's simple, it's reliable, and it works pretty much every single time. 1:69

Great video, what I would do is after clicking on the mask 2:25 I would invert it and brush only the area I want to remove redness from. thanks for the idea :)

I agree - normally I would do the same but if you get the red-channel tuning right you shouldn’t need to. Also I was trying to make it as quick as possible (everyone always wants things to be speedy!!!)
