How to Build Rolling Nesting Boxes for Chicken's

- As we were planning out our chicken coop we were determined that we needed rolling nesting boxes to prevent egg eating and to help keep eggs clean. I did a little research on the amount of slope they needed. Too much the eggs would crack when rolling, too little and they wouldn't roll at all! I decided a 2inch incline is what I needed. From there I drew and cut a template for walls. Put on a floor and roof. added stop bars in the front and the back, and later an additional inner bar to keep chickens out of the catch area (see very end of video for those pics). it took me a day to build these and we love how they turned out!

Tight work little lady! Glue is over kill though unless you plan to put that think under cover..osb will fall apart long before glue plays a role! Nice to see though!

You are welcome! I couldn't find anything any where either so it was very much guess work for me to design. I think others didn't share because it can vary so much! If I did it again I would make the egg catch area 2x as long as I did, chickens are tricky when they want to eat eggs!!! The box size works for us but it can definitely be smaller if I had limited space. I did a ton of research to come up with what I did in this video. I appreciate the comment and watch, thank you!

Oh my word!! It never even occurred to me to make up plans, that is a great idea! But it will definitely take me a while to figure out how to do that, I am very much an eye it and trial and error type of person lol. Something I would do differently now is make the catch area longer (that the eggs roll into) by maybe 3 inches, even though I put up those bars at the end to help the girls stay out of the eggs some are very persistent! Making it longer along with the stop bar would keep the eggs out of their reach. Sorry to disappoint you when you got to my Etsy store.

Aww thanks! I do my grocery shopping at WinCo mostly. Then local grocery when they have great deals and I stock up. I keep it super simple when doing food storage if I am about to run out of something I keep an eye out for it to go on sale then get more, I look for good deals at case lot sales and ads, sometimes I try to just get 1 thing to add to my food storage. It is never done in just 1 shopping trip that would be too overwhelming even for me, but doing a little at a time is manageable. ☺️ That is a great idea to do a video on my process. Does your angle work? Most say a 13 to 14 degree angle is needed to get the eggs to roll down, do yours roll well?
Yep, we are almost to a year with these boxes and ours roll great. If I did it again I would make the egg catch part deeper to help prevent chickens from reaching in and eating eggs, like 2-3 inches. They are persistent.
@@countrysparkles Wow thanks for the instant reply. Have you tried hanging black cloth at the point where the eggs roll under, a kind a curtain to hide the eggs?
@@countrysparkles Also I notice you have two angle drop measurements, 2" and 3 1/2", which did you use? I ask because I have one 72" long box already built and 3 more to go. I pick up my laying hens mid August and need to be prepared. Thank you much.
Lol yes the girls just stuck their wings and head through. I am going to put up another bar inside further in then the other one I added and see how that does. I did hang black material on the outside too so it was hard to see at all in there and that helped not being able to see the eggs even roll away well. I have a few that just refuse to give up.
And I used the 2" off the back. I haven't had a problem with eggs not rolling back unless one gets wedged just right on a piece of bedding but that doesn't happen often. I think the 3.5 would have been way too steep, (that was just my brain storming sketch) and would have damaged eggs rolling out. But you could do 2.5 and that incline wouldn't be bad either if you want it to be just a bit steeper. My chickens sit on carpet in the nesting boxes that I have stapled down and the eggs can still roll off into the catch area.
How did you mount in your coop?
In my building a chicken coop tour there is a pic of my son and husband behind the boxes we first built that wood frame and attached it to the coop with Craig jig holes. Then we screwed the nesting boxes into that frame and that's it. Here are some videos with the pictures and then a tour of what looks like at the very end all put together. I included times of where the nesting boxes are specifically in the videos for you.

Wouldn't a paint roller tray work? Just line it with astro turf. It would have a short drop for eggs to roll away from hens.
It definitely could work. There are so many different ways to do homesteading stuff! It is so fun to find what works for you.
Nice, but you should make the bottom square and flat. Put your 1x2s at an angle inside.
This will make it way easier for you to build.
Makes it easier to test and adjust the angle. (Not stuck with the pre cut angle)
Also makes it stable while moving around and not teetering over.
It also makes it easier to handle and mount onto the coop.
Option 1, Place and level a board on the bottom where you intend to mount, and set the box on that board. Mount the box.
Option 2, Make a French cleat for the top and/or top & bottom. Install and level the top cleat, bottom half, on the wall. Lift and place boxes on the wall. If cleated on the bottom also, place and mount the bottom half of the lower cleat.
Also, make the top at a steep angle. You don't want the chickens getting on top and pooping all over it. If this is going on the outside this will help the rain roll off of it.
Use synthetic grass mats. Made for easy cleaning and they are open at the bottom. Use 1x2 welded wire in the catch tray. The whole bottom if you can. Any poop or dirt they track in can fall through. At the catch tray, where the mat ends, bend one row of squares (of the 1x1) Up to just below the top of the mat and back downsloping into the catch tray. Start curving the 1x1 up to the board. To slow the eggs down and not slam up against the board. Left this till now, when putting the 1x1 down make sure the wire that is on top (as they cross over each other) is is running perpendicular to the backboard. This creates tracks for the eggs ro roll down. You don't want the top wire to be running parallel to the backboard. You don't want the eggs bouncing, everytime the hit the next wire.
Last. Try and make some push out/excluders in the boxes. Set on a timer 30 or so minute before dark, it will push the hens out so they don't sleep in the boxes. Not all that hard to make.

@@clp6743 How long/wide do you need it. I have so far, planned it for two sets of boxes(48" with 4 nesting boxes, each) , made 90% from 1 sheet of plywood.
