    Our company only caries parts for the brands we support (LCT, Wuxi, Launtop) but I would be glad to answer any questions over e-mail.
    Note:The reading stated in this video are not necessarily the reading's for your end, for the readings on the generator end that you have call manufacturer of your brand of generator.

    Measuring between R1, R2, L1, L2 to ground or the chassis should never read "zero". It should read infinite (open circuit) to the chassis or frame. The flashing "4" on your meter indicates an open circuit.

      Excuse me, isn't neutral connected to ground in generators? And so, considering that one among L1/L2/R1/R2 should be neutral, why should be open loop between these contacts and ground? Thank you

      @@integr8er66 Correct. I have a larger 8 kW brushless AVR generator and neutral is not bonded to the frame. Typically the panel will say "neutral bonded to frame" and as mentioned in the video, disconnecting the generator head from the control panel will disconnect the neutral from ground for testing.

    Mr. Tyler, it was great to see you in live demonstration. Finally and late to get back to 5500 diesel generator repair. Installed the tank valve. Good information on troubleshooting my low voltage on generator. I will see to it and get back in touch. Hope I won't need any diodes.

    Hello MacleTech, If I understand this right, the rotating field in a brushless gen has 2 sets of
    windings? one set sakes in a.c. sent to a fw rectifier bridge and sends d.c. to the other
    winding? The capacitor is used to hold a charge on the stator windings so rotating field will
    have a voltage induced in it when it starts to spin, that a.c. is turned to d..c to make a stronger
    field for the generator to build up.

    Professionally laid out with the expected test values...very useful for the self repair person. Please comment on the expected life of these 178F diesel engines....? Ours lasted about 4 hours before splitting the case.

      I have seen these engines last for thousands of hours and i have also seen a piston go through the cylinder wall after 30, most common they do last a very long time with proper maintenance, check valves periodically keep on top of the oil changes and never ever try to start them with starting fluid or any thing like , if anything use WD-40.

    I've got a 10k watt unit I picked up on the cheap. One of the 120 legs works just fine, the other blows its breaker anytime a load is placed on it. I fired the parts cannon at it without investigating thinking it's just the breaker. However, a replacement breaker results in the same.
    I guess I gotta start diving a little deeper into the issue. It's a capacitor-excited field coil setup.

    • @raymondgarafano8604
      @raymondgarafano8604 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seems weird to me. and u r sure it is a 120 volt winding? as a brushless job would have 3 stator windings, ur two 120 volt windings, one side of each hookt to a white wire for neutral to get the 120 volts off each leg and an exciter winding which should go to the capacitor.

    You could get a good shock and make u pay more attention, if one's heart is that fragile, they should not be messing with this sort of thing. Is R1 and R2 returns? for L1 and L2 is the neutral floating or bonded? If R is return, to get 240 would it be R1 toL2, getting neutral between R1 and L2 and 240 from L1 to R2? Going by Dan Burch any continuity between l1 R1 L2 R2 to ground would be a bonded neutral?

    I have an 10 year old 3000 watt Chinese clone Generator that has an AVR in it. for some reason it just stop producing power and then will come on again 10 minute later. But I have also got a very old 7.4 watt Honda brush less welder/ generator that I also use I found that once I get it running right it will actually run the whole house. As in fridge freezer Even the Ltd TV washing machine etc. it will also run any electrical appliance that go's though a step down that is that converts 240 v AC current to say 12 DC current. And over the years It has broken down some times But because my Generator not under a great deal of load It wont massively burn out a huge hole in the wiring usually just a single wire the stator have found it so easy to repair as ever now and then I would burn out a a resistor And at one time when I burned out that wire in the stator I just soldered it back up again. and then epoxied the broken wire if you use one of these for the house make sure to use a power surge conector

  • @wxfield
    @wxfield 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Also..if you have a working generator it doesn't hurt to take the cap off and record the ohms of the stator with a sharpie on the generator housing for future reference.

      Nice video except two places. At 6:11 you said resistance should always be zero, a zero reading is a short to ground (the case), which not the case here. At 8:42 you show symbol for a capacitor, not an "ohm" (resistor) symbol. Nice job otherwise.

    • @mactech8975
      @mactech8975  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should stay within the 5% range of your original capacitor rating, but we usually go up or down 2 µF if we do not have the exact cap in stock. ( example: if we need a 26 µF cap we usually replace it with a 28µF cap or a 24 µF) it does not cause a noticeable difference in the output.

    I tried to email you but it wouldn't go through.
    I have a problem I've been trying to figure out with my generator. On the end of the generator I only have 3 of the four nodes being used (R1,R2,L2) and L1 has nothing connected to it at all. Is this normal? I'm wondering why this is the case. With this configuration, how would I test it for problems? It was made to produce 120 and 240 volts. Any help would be appreciated!

    • @mactech8975
      @mactech8975  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have seen that setup b4 on some launtop brand gens, mostly they just use the 1 neutral wire coming from the panel with 2 mains (witch is not good because it causes back feed but still works) . As far as coming out of your end are there still 4 wires with 2 on 1 node? If so the testing should be the same, your hot to the neutral node would still show the 120 and 240 between the 2 main hots.

      Then you will most likely see a low voltage output. You should stay in the 5% range of your original l cap and if you cant only go up or down 2 µF or so.

    Thanks for the video. I bought the engine shown in this video from someone who said the generator he had broke and he had taken the engine off, given the electric start motor to a friend, and sold the engine (to me). I hear it's very common for these generator ends to fail, and knew there wasn't a lot involved with fixing them. Of course, I'm happy I got a reasonably priced engine. :D
    Question -- is this unit really made by the LCT/Liquid Combustion Tech company, or is it just a Chinese knockoff using a well known company name? Reason is, I could not find any mention of this diesel engine on the LCT company website.
    Also - does this engine come with a flywheel-mounted DC charging coil for the electric start battery, or is the engine-mounted voltage regulator powered from the generator end diodes? I can't see any wires coming from where the charge coil is normally installed, and have purchased a new charge coil and permanent magnet rotor to install to allow the engine to keep a starting battery charged since I've re-purposed the engine for use on a wood chipper. The engine has a DC voltage regulator attached to it, but the leads had been clipped and I didn't see the 2 leads coming from where the flywheel rotor is usually installed, so I'm going to have to pull the flywheel anyway, but was just curious if they normally tap off the exciter coil/diodes to avoid the need to install an engine-mounted coil. Thank you for showing how to fix the generator end. I have a gas powered Winco generator which is having trouble starting motors far below the rated power so think I may eventually troubleshoot that unit using the info you presented here. Much appreciated.

    • @mactech8975
      @mactech8975  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as LCT they no longer manufacture or import the diesel because of EPA regulations, the DC voltage regulator gets its power off of the two blue wires(there should be two sets) on the gen end, it should have a connector the same as your DC connection. Most of the units have a extension wire that goes from the gen end to the DC regulator.
