      @@DesaYogiIyengarYoga Hi teacher Kathy, i have a question in this video, why in shavasana pose exhale breath is little bit longer than inhale breath ?

    • @DesaYogiIyengarYoga
      @DesaYogiIyengarYoga  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@anhbook3964 Hi Anh, in Savasana at the end of our practice, we want to let go everywhere in the body. This also includes the breath. In relaxation, it is important to release and our exhalation helps with this. Focus gently on this rhythm and then finally let go of that and allow the breath to come and go naturally.

    Hello Katy 😊
    With the translation that you do while giving the class, it completely covers the posture and we cannot see well how you execute the asanas and it is important to be able to see well how it is done. One suggestion, perhaps the subtitles should be smaller and appear at the bottom of the screen.

      “we don't have built-in subtitles, the subtitles was what they choose to turn on and automatically generated by youtube”

I've always been struggling with the staff pose. It's just impossible for me to keep my back and legs straight not to mention touch my toes. How do you think I could improve my Dandasana?

    • @DesaYogiIyengarYoga
      @DesaYogiIyengarYoga  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Olga, sounds like your hamstrings are very tight. (the back of your legs. The insertion is at the sitting bone connecting with the back of the knee. First sit up on more height. When sitting pull the top of the back thigh and buttock bone back and spread the buttock to make space to sit so the back can lengthen. If you don’t take enough height your lower back will curve and the spine will not be able to lift up vertically. The only choice you will have is to bend the knees. To avoid that do the above.
      To get the front thing descending, try placing a rolled mat, or folded blanket (lengthwise and just enough enough to fit under the back of the knees) Tighten the knees and press down. That way you can practice getting the front of the thigh and back thigh working to straighten and also lift up through the low back.
      Hope that helps. Let me know. Namaste, ♥️♥️

      Hi Irit, yes it’s individual according to your experience. You can continue to practice as much as you feel you are still getting an understanding. Then go to the second and so on. Or alternate between the first and the second and then move on when you want to add. Knowing you can always return to clarify your understanding is very useful. They can be practiced again and again going through the series and repeat. It takes our body and mind to develop sensitivity and all this takes time. Be curious.

    Thank you for this wonderful class. I have been practicing yoga for about 25 years sporadically. I have been practicing Iyengar for about 3 years now, and study his book and 20 week program. Do to several bad luck injuries the past year, I am very careful about which poses I do, not to aggravate the healing process. Question: I noticed that your front leg is not fully extended, but knee cap is pulled up. So, that would be in trikonasana, etc... similar poses. Can you explain how the front leg should work, to protect knee, not hyperextend...I am a bit confused. Thank you!

    • @DesaYogiIyengarYoga
      @DesaYogiIyengarYoga  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for practicing with me! Definitely important to be sensitive to injuries and adjust where needed to recover fully. Thanks for your questions, they are good ones! Many times after you think your injuries are healed an imbalance can once again appear. You are a good student with keen observation. The front leg should be fully straightened with the knee cap lifting, you are correct. When there is a tendency to hyperextend the knee, one can slightly bend the knee or use a block (at an angle) at the calf muscles to prevent hyperextension and fully straighten the leg. When I did uttita trikonasana I had a slightly bent knee due to an old injury in my ankle. My stride was wide. Once I shorten the stride the weight on the front leg is lessened and my front leg straightens without pressure in that ankle. Where are your injuries? Are you hypermobile in certain areas? 🙏🏻🤩

      @@DesaYogiIyengarYoga Thank you for answering. Glad I am on the correct path. I was a ballet dancer, and so I have a keen eye for technique and body alignment. I am not hyperflexible, but 57 and dealing with aging body parts. I have a L5 cyst for over 1 yr, which is still there but not bothering me much. It irritates the sciatic nerve, but I try block the neurologic path and just move. Also a tiny rip in the right hip meniscus, which occurred at the time the cyst grew, due to a horrible chiropractor. And Christmas 2020 I broke my left ankle, which flared my RSD up again. That is the worst of all, but I manage it well. I concentrate on slow build back and stability. Alternate days doing yoga and stability exercises to protect my limbs. Overall, I am healthy and work around these injuries, which are nearly gone. I enjoy your channel and will continue participating, as there are so few Iyengar practitioners! Thank you so very much!

    Hi Kathy, Thank you for this class. A qn..when you say "bring the shoulder blades in" and upper arms back towards shoulder girdle do you mean shoulder blades towards each other or shoulder blades into the chest? Either way, when I do the shoulder blades in and upper arms injected into shoulder socket, I feel I cant lift my arms up - it restricts...

    • @DesaYogiIyengarYoga
      @DesaYogiIyengarYoga  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi there, try this, take your arms to the side in line with your shoulders. Rotate the entire arm and shoulder to face upward. Move the shoulder blades downward toward the floor and forward toward the chest, then reach both arms up with palms facing each other ( Urdhva Hastasana) . It’s important to get the rotation to create space. If your shoulders are tight spread the arms more or hold a strap. Straighten the elbows and lift from the lower waist corners. Shoulders are always descending, Hope that makes sense. 🙏🏻

    Thank you for the class. One little problem with this video though - in the beginning you very clearly state: "The only props we'll be using today are the strap and the blanket". The key word here is "only". Then, in the middle of the vid it turns out we need a wall. Some of us have to practice in poky rooms, surrounded with stuff. So one has to pause the vid and rush around moving furniture to get access to the wall and this kind of interruption isn't really helpful. And after that it turns out that two blocks are needed as well. So one has to pause the video the second time and go look for blocks. All that rushing around knocks one clean out of concentration which, as far as I understand, sort of defeats the very purpose of the practice.
    It would be massively helpful if a correct advice about the props needed came in the beginning. Thank you so much.

    • @DesaYogiIyengarYoga
      @DesaYogiIyengarYoga  ปีที่แล้ว

      Dear M.B, oh thank you for your comment. I really appreciate your point and the break in concentration as well as stop n start. My apologies for the incorrect instructions from the beginning.
      Since these classes are free and you may watch over and over to become familiar I suggest you make a note so next time you will have all props gathered to practice without that stop n start. The great think about having these at your disposal is your gained familiarity with the practice and setup.
      All my best, Namaste, Kathy
      Ps in case I have forgotten to mention any props for future classes, best to have gathered around you and a wall is always useful no matter what you practice especially as a beginner. 🤗❤️

      Hi Ruchi, I am not exactly clear what your saying here. I do understand your having some difficulties. Go slowly, watch again and see if things don’t become more clear. If too difficult for you condition, try using the wall and a chair for support. You can also take a video so I can see what is the area of concern. 🙏🏻

    Thank you! A question regarding the knees: When you guide us to lift the kneecap up, does this mean up away from the knee joint or up toward the hip?

    • @DesaYogiIyengarYoga
      @DesaYogiIyengarYoga  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Angela, if standing in tadasana, the lift is up to engage the quadriceps. That is also up toward the hip.
      Try pressing the balls of the toe mounds down while lifting the toes up, as if they could lift to your knees, and see what that action creates.
      Important to engage the muscles around the knee to support the knee itself which is an unstable joint.
      If sitting in dandasana, flex the foot and toes toward the knee to get the lift. 🙏🏻

      Do you also lift the back of knees up? Or is it only the front of the knees? By lifting only the kneecaps up doesnt it lead to an uneven lift? i.e hamstrings dont lift but just the quads?

    After how days practicing part- 1: I can try part - 2 and part - 3 of your yogas video?

    • @DesaYogiIyengarYoga
      @DesaYogiIyengarYoga  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try and see how you feel and be willing to go back and practice what you practice prior even though you may move on to other classes. Try after a few months and see how your body is responding.
      You are always your best teacher. The Iyengar teaching is systematic intelligence, learn the actions and how it feels in the body and build up day by day! Thanks for your question:-)

      Thank you for the feecback. We've been uploading without any subtitles lately. Please let us know if it helps. Also you could turn off any subtitles on the lower right corner that says "cc".

    Would it be possible to go a little slower with the instructions and it would be helpful to tell audience you are not mirroring your viewers. Thanks.

    • @DesaYogiIyengarYoga
      @DesaYogiIyengarYoga  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Elisabeth, thanks for your comment. Soon I have a foundational 6 week course coming that will take each asana slower along with the directions. This will build on each action day by day, so you are able to really learn at your pace.
      Please watch for it! In the meantime, pause the video and rerun to practice bits at a time so you go at a slower pace. This will allow you to take a few notes as well as being willing to do over and over. Our bodies and our minds don’t work at the same pace. Its ok to revisit over and over until you get it in your body. Namaste, K
